I paused this video right as Mr. Frampton starts talking about the Winterland Theatre, San Francisco. My late older brother, who was also a singer/songwriter/guitarist, played there several times; opening for, among others, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead. And who showed up at his deathbed the day before he died was Jon 'JD' Dworkow: He's on page 2 of Mr. Frampton's memoirs. I remember asking him if he ever met Paul McCartney; he said-'yes'. I remember where I was, and who I was, when I first heard-'Maybe, I'm Amazed'. I was with Judy Collins' kid sister.

At around 11:00 minutes, Pete says what I always thought about his approach. And, that is what makes him special, it is not having a bunch of technical knowledge about music, it is about playing from the soul. I could hear and see this in him from the beginning. Having said that, knowing more about music and learning more will expand your playing, but you still have to play from the gut.

That was a GREAT interview Andy and thanks for doing it! Peter Frampton has been my favorite guitarist for more than 50 years. I purchased Humble Pie's "Humble Pie Performance Rockin' The Fillmore" when it was released in 1971. It was Mr. Frampton's playing on that album, along with the pictures of him with that most beautiful of all Les Pauls (now known as the "Phenix") on the album, that made me want to play guitar in the first place. His style was then and still is, unlike any of his contemporaries and it spoke to me all those years ago. His comments about the Blues, particularly around the 44 min mark, are exactly how I feel (even though I've always been stuck playing pentatonics). I love hearing great Blues players, but I don't want to play like that, even though I do. I truly hope that you do another interview with him and get further into the proverbial weeds with him about what he hears. I know that I'm still trying to figure-it-out! Cheers! MB

Fantastic interview as ever Andy G Jones. Really great to hear the jazz connections and influences discussed. It’s the sort of things that players are often aware of but never get chance to dissect with the originator.

This really was an informative interview, as others here commented, and it's fitting to have this done with a musician this great. Fascinating to hear his approach in detail.
One of the greatest compliments I ever got on my guitar playing was years ago, when listening back to a recording in the studio, and my bandmate said I had played a "Peter Frampton solo." I was very happy to have PF mentioned in any connection to my playing but it took me a while to understand why they'd said that. Basically, I'd improvised some arpeggios, which I then realized PF always did so beautifully, as opposed to simply running pentatonic licks as many of his contemporaries did (and as I often did on my own solos).
FCA was one of the first records I heard as a kid when I was realizing I wanted to play the guitar. Even though it took me forever to learn to play, those gorgeous guitar sounds I heard at the start must have sank in a bit. Looking back it's amazing how special his playing is, especially compared to most other players of that era. I didn't realize that then, I just thought it sounded great. I was very fortunate to have been exposed to such wonderful playing early on.

It's interesting Frampton mentioning Clapton. The other day I was listening to Joe Bonamassa's solo on the song Sloe Gin (studio version). When I noticed that Bonamassa had Frampton's tone and playing characteristics, but playing Clapton like phrasing! I enjoy so many guitar players from A to Z. But I was asked once that if I could only listen to one guitar tone and style, what and who would it be?
    My answer .... Peter Frampton!

One more interview that comes to show how humble of a human being and great as an all round musician Peter Frampton is. I could listen to him talking for DAYS, and I'm serious. What a gifted man. And what a great interview. There's tones of respect, admiration, love, caring and wisdom in here. Congrats to the interviewer (you've just got one more suscriber here) and to Peter Frampton himself. Aging so gracefully (human and musically) is such a treat for someone who's been at the very top and then, to the very realms of despair. (in his own words, I mean). In the end, Frampton keeps being an extraordinary musician and a better person. My whole admiration here. Thanks for this.

This is fantastic, I could listen to Peter talking all day about his career and so on. He seems such a humble , nice guy who is just 'himself'. I read his book a little while ago and wow, what an adventure. I don't think careers' in music would happen like that any more, but his story is definitely well worth a read. The only other musician I can think of who had a similar path from a young age would be Guy Pratt. The way he was 'discovered' at a young age and was snapped up by many big names for sessions and live tours is quite parallel to Peter. Maybe Guy is one for the future :) ...Great work and happy to subscribe.
