The Volvo BZL Electric is the first fully-electric bus chassis offered by Volvo, with two different component layouts designed for either single-deck or double-deck bus construction. It was officially unveiled in September 2021 and expanded on Volvo’s prior electric bus offering - the Volvo 7900e range - which was only available as an integral bus.
For the driveline, single-deck buses can be configured with a single or dual motor unit, with each motor rated at 200 kW (268 hp). The double-deck configuration is only available with the single-motor option. The electric motor(s) is coupled to a two-stage automated manual transmission, which according to Volvo, increases wheel torque at low speed and evens out current peaks, thus reducing energy usage and driveline wear.
In Singapore, local coachbuilder SC Auto Industries partnered with Volvo Buses to develop the Volvo BZL-SC Neustar City, Singapore’s first indigenously-built range of bus bodies and buses. The bus was first unveiled on 17 November 2022 at a launch ceremony held at SC Auto’s premises in Senoko.
SC Auto and Volvo designed the bus from scratch over a 12-month period, with a focus on safety and quality. On the manufacturing front, SC Auto is well-equipped to produce this new vehicle type, having had decades of experience in coachbuilding, and has dedicated one production line to the building of bus bodies on the Volvo BZL. In addition to high-tech production facilities, the company can manufacture fibre-reinforced plastic mouldings in-house, giving it self-sufficiency over importing moulded parts from third parties.
The traction batteries of the Volvo BZL-SC Neustar City are solely roof-mounted, which reduces cabin space occupied at floor level and frees up space in the passenger cabin. Furthermore, the bus incorporates design choices that facilitate easy component replacement in the field. SC Auto says the bodywork can also be supplied in both CKD and SKD forms.
Finally, the ‘SC Neustar City’ name builds on SC Auto’s success with the SC Neustar, an integral coach fully built in Singapore that launched in 2018.
As for the broader electric bus market in Singapore, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is aiming to rapidly electrify the public bus fleet. Half of all public buses will be electric by 2030, which is about 3,000 buses. In the aftersales segment, a Volvo Buses press release in June 2022 describes the efforts of its local distributor (ComfortDelGro Engineering) in preparing its technicians to service these new vehicles.

Does anyone think this sounds nice? Or one step further.. anyone prefer this sound over a diesel bus? 🤔🤔
sounds nice for electric barse but will never beat diesel barse
louzy finite resource authority rejected this barse cos not cheap enough 3 door
i honestly prefer this sound, i think its definitely one of the most melodic buses in sg's bus industry!
I personally like the sound but for me at least, it can't come close to being as nice as a diesel. Each to their own though!
Compared to other electric barses, dis one got that clear engine sound, its perfect but can never beat a diesel barse
this sounds nice... what a pity i never got the chance to ride on it...
hopefully lta will consider procuring these buses in future
Mm, who knows
This is the best electric sound imo
Tru
Ngl, the acceleration sound kinda reminds me of the old Volvo B6BLE/Wright Crusaders we had here in the Black Country a few years ago
Wonder what it'd be like to have a 4 or 6 speed transmission mounted to an electric motor, lol (hopefully it'd fully replicate the sound of a 90's diesel midibus)
I suppose only time will tell, it'll certainly be exciting to find out though
Pushing volvo bzl to limit with speed and rev. Weird that scania kub door closing chime is used in volvo bzl when closing
Haha yeah it's certainly quite a fast bus.
I preferred this than the Linkker... Add on, this has more forward facing seats plus the seats are not that tight like those on the Linkker where there's barely any legroom for an average height guy...
I too prefer this to the linkker hahha
I honestly have never heard of electric buses shifting until now.
Same before I heard about this one
@@glitchFan2428 Imagine if they put a ZF on it
Do they have these in the UK (not the 7900E)? There's quite a number running in Perth, and Volvo is trying up to drum up orders in Australia.
I'm not sure, I seem to always miss BZLs in the UK. Missed the Bournemouth one by a single day, Warrington one as well, and most annoying of all, the Manchester was trialed during the month I was in Singapore 😵💫
@@glitchFan2428 I can't get any new demos in Singapore these days so don't worry, it's just our generation 😂😂 But at least I managed to see a BZL chassis at an Aussie trade fair.
@@sgbuses haha same I don't even know when my next visit to Singapore will be.
@@glitchFan2428I'm too broke to fly😂
@@sgbuses same, such a mood!
Wait, did it fail its trial? If it actually failed I'm mad
Not sure
fail cos louzy lta deputy director of bus assets don't want 2 door bus, and 3 door SD european bus they think too expensive
volvo scania MAN all rightfully got very pissed off at them lmao
insider
got king long demo coming btw
Moral of the story: don't judge a book by its cover. In this case e buses are known to produce no transmission sound but in this case there is
Indeed! Something different is always welcome
VOLVO SUPREMACY 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥🚌🚌🚌🚌
But sure they abit differences
Slight differences here and there among electric buses but this one is quite a big difference because of the gearbox
If LTA really wants to insist that 'electric is the way forward', then at least get these type of buses instead of the MIC cheap trash that won't even last half the lifespan of the buses they replaced
even yutong got rejected cos hurr hurr not 3 door
louzy authority
Yeah I would much prefer these, especially with the two step gearbox
@@glitchFan2428 get volvo 7900 electric brendy barse !!!!!
I think all are same they all electric
*electric voith transmission.*
Sus
@@glitchFan2428 but no KUB kickdowns :(
Seems sluggish/limited
The speed is limited to 60kmh but acceleration I'm not exactly sure how the gearing ratio works
Its in no way slow electrics are alot quicker than diesels
@@LJ07EBP yes i know they are, but you can set the bus up to perform slowly like a tortoise mode.
This bus looks like to have that setting applied.
I have no doubt the bus can speed off very fast but when the bus companys mechanics are told to restrict the power and speed sometimes
@@psmith77271 I don't think this is done deliberately. I know of limp mode but companies don't just restrict the bus power like that.
Limp mode happens on vehicles with engines only when the computer detects a fault with parts around the engine and to prevent further damage it reduces the amount of fuel squirted into engine every second
@@LJ07EBP i know companys that have done it.
Loacal bus depot to me had a batch of electric buses from new and they were very powerfull and fast.
Few weeks later they were like as in limp mode as you say.
I asked the driver why they were like that now, he told me they have restricted the power/pull away speed due to some drivers abusing the bus.
So they can do it and they do it with diesel buses too.
Example london buses are restricted left right and centre.
We have a few ex london volvos in our depot and when they arrived they were awfull, low power and speed limited to 47mph.
Once the mechanics opened them up a bit they were far far better for take off speed and maximum.limited speed was increased to 62mph.
