  • Discover the the story of a Singapore bus that was scrapped after just 6 months of revenue service on the roads.. SG4002G, the original 3 Door rigid demonstrator bus. From SITCE 2016 all the way to that fateful day in 2023 when the bus was sent to the scrapyard, this is the full story of the journey of one of Singapore's most remembered demonstrator buses.
Special thanks to ‪@TransportCinematic‬ and ‪@SGZStudios‬ for providing the footage in the scrapyard for this video.

    3:47 Disclaimer
The 12-metre long concept bus was built on a MAN NL323F chassis. Although configured as a low-floor chassis, SG4002G was built as a low-entry bus to allow for the relocation of powertrain components to accommodate the rear staircase. Fitted with a modified Lion’s City Hybrid bodywork (also referred to as a MAN Lion’s City SD 3Dr), it also features seats with headrests, USB charging ports, Passenger Information Display Systems, and low-height windows to give seating passengers a better view of the surroundings. More information can be found at ‪@LandTransportGuru‬ 's website: landtransportguru.net/man-lio...
But why was the bus scrapped? Due to there being no public information available from any agency regarding the decision or consultation to scrap the bus, there will understandably be no mention of that in the video.

From a commuter point of view, I'm glad this bus didn't get introduced to more bus services - I don't think a third door would have had such a significant impact on boarding/alighting times that would justify the seats that it takes away.

I dont think it was mentioned in the video, but since 2017 it has already been deemed "wasted" when its engine was taken off the bus for conversion to the concept bus. Honestly 4002 might not be useful in the long run considering that it is merely a low-entry small capacity bus (unlike the electric low-floors of today), but i do feel it could be sold off for preservation, for the future to admire. Scrapping it might be worthwhile from an economic perspective but the heritage of SIngapore does too.

The lasting legacy of the SG4002G is the 3-door MAN DDs, which is really bad legacy looking at its overall utility (or lack thereof). If we looked at this bus in this perspective then it does deserve its fate because this third-door proposal is just very poor thought out. It's an awful waste of taxpayer money. It could be argued that it's impractical to keep a one-of-a-kind bus, but at the same time, it could still be converted to a training bus or like in the case of SG4003D, sold to a private bus company. Heck, even keep the bus as a testbed for new technology.
