Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. So, literally a hundred years ago, America got a huge facelift. I’m talking about new water systems, roads, the whole fabric of the country basically. And, SHOCKER, it has not been updated since!!! That’s a long time without a little revamping, and today, I’m shedding some light on the nasty consequences of all that neglect.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

I'm your host -- Bailey Sarian - Zábava
im a recent civil engineer and hearing these kind of conversations makes my brain ache. the short cuts taken these days to quickly produce infrastructure is sickening. as fast as they are getting built, another is crumbling. thank you for bringing awareness to this national issue !
US needs help from the dutch 🇳🇱
@cece-gc6gl we could certainly learn alot of many countries around the would when it comes to infrastructure. The biggest issue is applying it to such a large area. We have different infrastructure run by local, state and national governments.
Tatie bailey j'aime vraiment vos vidéos et je vous aime aussi ma question est comment s'appelle il le squelette le nouveau décor à l'air plus lumineux et spacieux 😊
As a civil engineer myself, this is really interesting lol it's like my two worlds colliding- Bailey Sarian and this topic 😆
I dont live in the US but searched up the train derailment and US has so many derailments its scary
My dad just died 5 days ago and binging your videos seem to help burry away my horribly sad thoughts. Thank you for being here. ❤️❤️❤️
I'm so sorry for your loss.
@@maryeckel9682 thank you so much ❤️

Ask a Mortician on CZcams did a deep dive on the St. Francis Dam Disaster. It was so heartbreaking. It's also one of my biggest fears. I love Dark History Bailey.❤❤❤
I like Ask a Mortician’s channel too! I have a few of her books as well.
Ooh. I have to check that out. Thanks.
Love ask a mortician, she's another one doing great work out there
I live in Austintown, Ohio (just over 25 miles outside of East Palestine. After the train derailment in febuary, anyone within a 30 mile radius of East Palestine was told to avoid their water due to the spill caused by the accident. Even from all the way out here, many people, including my mom, experienced adverse health affects in the following days (headaches, nausea, etc.) and the people we know in East Palestine and close to the train tracks were told it was better to evacuate their homes after the derailment for the coming days/weeks. To this day, the community is still dealing with the aftermath of what happened. It didn’t get nearly enough media coverage, and caused a lot of issues within the community. Thank you for sharing the story!!
It's really frustrating that things like this are going on in America in 2023!!! It's such a shame. I'm sorry that you and your community has had to deal with this disaster. The news reporting has been very bad at best. What has the local or federal government done to fix this? Anything?
Well, TFG thought that things like train regulations were too expensive and hurting the economy so he got rid of them to make the rail owners more money.
I live in East Palestine. I used to drink tap water all the time and I have not touched tap water since the train derailed.
I live in austintown too. What a scary time for east Palestine and everyone around
My friend lives 10 min away from the derailment site, the police were being very weird about the people trying to prove the local water was still polluted after it was deemed safe :(
a group of his friends went to take pictures/document the dead fish in the river and were followed by the police most of the time. He went on the news when it first happened to talk about his animals getting sick from the chemicals.
Honestly I could listen to Bailey talk all day and not get tired of her. She is always educating me on something! It’s awesome.
This 🫶🏼
I think she talks to much.
@@supermichaelssecondchannel4342 yeah… she should try shadow puppetry to communicate… or interpretive dance instead of speaking… go on somewhere. 🤌🏽

I’m a plumber for the union and I can say from personal experience a lot of us are over worked and under paid so people don’t always care as much as they should. But the contractors are also inlove with cutting as many corners as possible! I see things daily that should be done differently! I recently finished an apartment complex that was already bowing on the first floor, before drywall even went up, because the weight wasn’t properly supported. Just too many people running these companies who don’t care because “I don’t have to live here.” Also Bailey I love you!! You make my break at work enjoyable and I’ve learned so much!
So sick of that I don't have to live here attitude. . Miss the let us make it last mentality!
I hope Building Integrity doesn't end up covering its collapse
Speaking of infrastructure failures, I think it would be interesting to hear a dark history episode about the failing water delivery system specifically. For example, it's been over a decade, and Flint, MI is still suffering from their poisoned water crisis
Another thing they don't talk about, the medication in the water, the rust and the failing tunnels. It's terrible. I check in on the flint situation every so often and it seriously can't believe it's still going on
She already did this
I'm surprised the us government and state of Michigan governor's haven't sued nestle for the flint water scandal.
@@cliveharman7762Nestle took advantage of the situation, but they didn’t cause it. The city government did. They took too many shortcuts trying to save money. They’d be suing themselves.
It would be cool to hear about the corporate greed involved in the funeral industry and how mom and pop funeral homes are gobbled up by big entities like SCI and the Loewen group. They prey on people in their time of grief in the worst possible way.
Ask a Mortician just did a video on this and some proposed legislation! Should def be talked about more.
Great job Bailey. Just one little correction. The train in East Palestine did not explode upon derailment. It was set ablaze on purpose because the government officials thought that was a better way to dispose of the deadly chemicals rather than risk moving them. If that sounds like it doesn't make sense, that's because it doesn't. Look into the government's ability to steal land once it's been poisoned, then look into 15 minute or Smart cities. Then it will make sense.
Ah yeah, sounds logical, a bunch of poison is on the ground? Catch it on fire! Greeaattt 😒
Yup
Same reason with Hawaii.
I live 10 miles from the derailment. My cousin has been making tiktok updates of the contaminated water that is supposably safe. There is still major evidence of contamination in the water almost 6 months later.
@@stephanieboettcher41 I'm so sorry to hear that! Although I will say I'm not surprised after Flint, Michigan. They did this on purpose to y'all and my heart goes out to everyone suffering from this!
Jeez, this just happened in Libya, 2 dams broke 1 after another, and around 30,000 are dead n 40,000 misplaced! They were asleep as well! N it was estimated to be 12 stories high! A lot of the bodies flowed into the ocean! That's crazy!

I work in infrastructure IT doing various things for a lot of different clients, I can’t say much about because I love my
Job and don’t want to get fired, but I just want to say, thank you for doing this Bailey. This is 100% an issue that needs to be addressed heavily to get fixed. Maybe someone in charge will see this and realize it’s a huge issue. The state where I live had a sinkhole open up on or extremely close to the interstate which obviously needed emergency repairs causing both of the interstate lanes going that direction to be shut down. The DOT had to reroute people through a different road and from what I understand it was super unsafe causing a multi vehicle crash in which people died. People lost their lives because someone didn’t intervene before it got that bad. No one should lose their life because they were traveling. My condolences to the families and people affected by these problems in our nation’s infrastructure.
The 35w bridge collapse in Minneapolis still haunts me to this day
working, eating a breakfast sandwich & listening to my favorite history teacher what a life ❤
Friends. I got my days so mixed up this week. I thought Bailey missed a Thursday upload and I almost called LAPD for a wellness check 😅

Same! I was like, where's Dark History? It was Wednesday.
The story about the dam hits close to home as Libya was just hit with storm Daniel which broke the dam and has wiped an entire city. It’s estimated that it’s killed around 20,000. Most of them lost in the sea.
Bailey literally makes me laugh about dark stuff when I’ve been sobbing and in the middle of a depressive episode. THANK YOU BAILEY. 💕
South African here and this is so crazy to hear cause in South Africa we have potholes in all our roads, where I stay everybody buys bottled or filtered water cause the water isn't safe to drink 😂😂 And we get frequent power cuts. Everybody thinks it's better in Europe or America and I'm starting to learn each place has its own problem no matter where you are in the world
I'm english, yeah we have fresh tap water but several of our water companies are currently being sued for dumping raw sewerage into our rivers and canals. Our Motorways are fine but our roads, streets and lanes are full of potholes ...for starters
I don't know how government and taxes work over there, but here in the states we pay taxes to keep all this stuff up and safely running but instead our government buys themselves expensive furniture they don't need, takes expensive trips, sends money to other countries before helping our own, and the list just keeps going but what they don't do is what they're supposed to do with our tax money.
Like another comment said big companies dump toxic stuff where it shouldn't be dumped and it gets into our soil and water. What happens to them???? Usually nothing more than a slap and the wrist and a little fine.
It's disgusting but of course our government loves looking the other way when people hand them "free money"
Absolutely adore you Bailey. If I had one person in the world I could meet (and possibly indulge in the devils lettuce), you'd be it gal! Sending so much love from New Zealand.
We want a makeup and mystery video 😭😭

I live in Southwestern Wisconsin. We had a train derailment in April of this year, and there was also one in 2016. Everything deemed "safe" from these derailments flows south down the Mississippi River. I wonder how many other small towns have things like this happening with more frequency that national news shares. We knew weeks in advance of the most recent derailment that the area was flooded. The railroad makes choices to keep running trains when it's not safe. The cost is our health, the environment, and excessive clean up expenses.
I'm in SE Idaho, earlier the year we had 3 derailments in less than 6 months. They never told us what was spilled but the tracks,of course, run next to a river. Happens too often, everywhere
Bailey brought up Philly and the I-95!!! RIP to the driver! And I want to say, local government and road workers worked incredibly fast to fix I-95, and it was fixed in 2 weeks!! Absolutely incredible work from the crew who rebuilt this interstate. 🎉
Love Paul's costume for today's theme. Bailey, you rock!🎉
Joan's looking very Crows at Work, too!
How do you manage to make things that would usually be considered boring actually interesting!? Magic! Love this series so much! 🖤

My husband is a civil engineer for the department of transportation, I’m not going to name the state. You hit the nail on the head. He complains about this all the time!!!!
I get nervous driving on bridges. And hate when I have to sit on a bridge because of traffic or lights. It's worse when going over water. I'm terrified of them collapsing from all the traffic weight.
Literally same!!
I absolutely love your Dark History series. I always hated history in school, but now as an adult, I can't get enough of it. It fascinates me.
i’m from point pleasant wv, yes the home of the mothman but in the year 1967 the ohio bridge fell. it connected point pleasant and gallipolis ohio. during rush hour the bridge collapsed and 46 people died due to an eyebar flaw that was an issue from the start of construction. it is still considered one of the worst bridge disasters in modern history in the united states.
That’s just awful! We must make bridges a priority in this country and quit making excuses. Provide temporary free terry rides if need be but it has to be done.
I'm in Belpre and I was a kid where the bridge fell.. I remember seeing it on the news.. Christmas presents floating in the water got to me really bad.. bridges have scared me since then
What a wierd coïncidence bailey does an infrastructure episode same week of Morocco's earthquake and Lybia's stormour hearts goes to the victims and their families🖤 😢 infrastructure is everything****
Bailey will always tell the truth! I love learning things from her ❤
The hard part for anybody is finding the truth! It's really difficult. Even Google flat out lies now!
Love learning new things every week!! One dark history I would love to see would be about roller coasters or amusement parks!! I’m sure there has been a lot of death and cover ups there!!
Queen of Mondays 👸🏻
You're definitely one of my favorite youtuber! My man who hates jusy about everything i watch will sit and listen while he plays his game and tells me to be quiet if I'm talking.
I live in southern indiana and the chemical spill in ohio was so bad we had boil water advisories even in my town hours away from the derailment
Brilliant episode! You mentioned the ancient water pipe issues and I saw a documentary a while ago (can’t remember where in the USA) where they discovered local water pipes were made of asbestos and have not been replaced 😬
Bailey is too adorable.
(you too Joan)
🐦❤
I lived in North Carolina during Hurricane Floyd. The Dam in Tarboro broke because the mechanism that helped keep the flow of water maintained broke, causing another town to be completely underwater...I mean there were caskets floating above the water, literally. My dad worked for a major soda company in Rocky Mount NC and he lost his job because the flood destroyed the plant. It was horrible!!
I'm in NC too and the twon I grew up in has a major used railway. I can't remember for sure but it had to have been 2011 or 2012 we had a derailment. The older side of the mill town had to evacuate due to toxic chemical spills.
They left the fallen cars there for over a year. It looked post apocalyptic. Legit one of the scariest things I've seen.
The train ran on a hill and I lived 3 streets in front. The sound was horrifying
@@ichimarutetsuboth of these events are awful! and i’ve never even heard of them before. I live in Ohio, luckily quite the distance away from where the train derailed, but it was still a very scary experience
Please cover the mass forced sterilization on Alaskan native and Native American women in dark history!!
💯💯
Love Monday and Thursday uploads, even my very country husband looks forward to your videos 😂
Same 😂🤣
I miss mm&mm 😭 but thank you for blessing us with a weekly dose of Bailey and Joan…oh and Paul I sometimes forget he exists 😅
This flashed me back to the sunshine skyway disaster! Think that was the 80s. A barge hit the bridge an bunched of vehicles went into tampa bay...the bridge has been rebuilt, but whats left of the old bridge is now just piers.
Pointing out all this stuff about infrastructure is such important work. It also got me thinking, it would be really cool to see an episode about the Paradise Camp Fire (2018), or just wildfires in general. The reasons they start, the way natural disasters are handled, the aftermath. I know a lot of Paradisians would really appreciate your take on it, myself included. Butte County is heavy in Bailey stans lol ❤
I just love learning new things i thought i could never care about. What you do is truly an art and so inspirational! ❤
Loving the new set.
Oh I love the new setup, Bailey. I feel like I'm sitting opposite a friend having a conversation over cocktails.
Would love to see the cheerleading episode! There are a couple of companies that sell the equipment, run the competitions, etc and it would be interesting to know just how much they've completely taken it over (or began it?).
Morning Bailey 🌹🌻🍃 A Dam Broke here in OZ Australia whole towns devastated 😢 The Dam was designed to hold 60% it was filled to 100% plots got lost ✌️💚😎🌊🌺🌴🌈☀️
“The next time your driving over a bridge! Just think, it might collapse!” Thanks Bailey 😂
The new set is giving ✨spooky time✨
We literally just had a chunk of a parking garage collapse here in Jacksonville THIS WEEK! Thankfully no one was hurt as far as I know.
Thinking heavy on the train derailment that happened in my village in like, the 1850s called The Angola Horror. John Rockefeller was supposed to be on that train but missed it. Wild how things happen 😭
Bailey please do a video about Carlos Robledo Puch! Love your videos ❤
Aloha sis! I’m from Maui and this totally hits the mark on what happened to our beautiful Lahaina town. So many of my friends and family lost their homes and my classmate was lost to the fires. I would love for you to make a video about how terrible our officials handled (or more so ignored) the fire hazards over the years. I love the way you report and break things down in your story telling. You truly are blessed with talent. I’ve been watching your videos for a long time but have never commented. But felt like you would be an amazing partner to Maui in bringing help and awareness to our community. Hope you’ll be able to shed some light on the dark history of Lahaina which was once the capital of hawaii and a wetland full of streams before the whaling industry and overthrow of the kingdom. There’s also a place called moku’ula where the kings and queens lived that you can look up that will help you in your research. Let me know if I can help direct you to more info ❤️
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the new intro ?!? Literally in love 💜
Thank-you for making work tolerable! I swear I've listened to every video like 6 times!!❤❤❤
Same lol and now with the 24-7 live my day is set
I know, sometimes I can't remember if I listened to or watched a story, so I'll start it.
I'll realize I've heard it.
If I know that I've seen or listened to it many times I'll move onto a new one. But if I've only heard it once or maybe 3 times, I'll listen again.
I pick up things I missed the first few times.
Hey Bailey! We're all happy to see another video. ❤ Hope you're having a wonderful day.
