Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Today we are diving in to a topic personal to me - my mom was a 911 dispatcher when I was growing up. And this experience always made me wonder… what happened before 911 existed? I did some digging, and it turns it involves the Titanic sinking, a woman named Kitty in Queens, and the modern-day Karen.

Fun fact: In Argentina, the emergency number used to be 101 but in 2006 they had to change it to 911 because people watched so many movies and series from the US that they'd automatically dial 911 instead.
I've always been curious about how such things would leak into other cultures.
I'm a part time medical 911 call taker and I've never felt so seen in my life 🙌🏾 I'm hoping the dark history of social work is next 😂

As a former dispatcher, you hit the nail on the head. PAY THEM A LIVEABLE WAGE! I loved dispatching more than any other job I've ever had, but I had to leave because I couldn't support my family. Athletes make millions of dollars, but first responders can't even afford to keep a roof over their heads or food on the table. We need better priorities here. Thank you for acknowledging such a difficult, thankless job. ❤

As an NYPD officer i am so glad you did this story-we refer to our 911 dispatchers as central and they are our number one life line! We LOVE our centrals and i try to thank them every chance i get. As part of our training we go to the dispatch center and get to see them at work. I have such respect for them and wish they were paid way more for what they do!

@@kelsmariedon’t know where you are but here in Ontario, Canada they have college courses for it !
@@malalalalala91 it depends on where you live. You should look up your state or city or country. But in the United States, for any state you do have to have a high school diploma or GED. And there is courses that are required for you to take. Some places require you to do clerical duties for a year before you can start working as a dispatcher. Depending on where you live, they require different things. And some require much more than this. You just have to look up where you personally live.

My mom was also a 911 dispatcher! I loved “take your daughter to work day”! I’ll never forget going on a daytime talk show with her (I wasn’t on the show, she was obv 😅) for helping a man deliver his wife’s baby in their home over the phone… it takes a certain kind of person that can detach from their personal emotions to do that job.

As a former dispatcher, thank you for this video and appreciation. I got paid $14 an hour in Colorado in 2018 and it’s insane how much is done by and expected out of dispatchers. I have mad respect for other dispatchers and for law enforcement/first responders for taking such low pay with little to no support for the trauma they experience.
When I had my second baby I had to call 999, the dispatcher was so incredibly helpful to me, he kept telling me I’m doing amazing and when I was having a contraction he was breathing with me to keep me calm and focused. When I said I’m pushing I heard a slight panic in his voice but then he instantly calmed down and said okay let’s do this together. Il never forget him, luckily the ambulance came before I delivered, but they told the dispatcher after I’d given birth and thanked him for me. To all you emergency dispatchers, thank you for everything you do daily.
Why did this make me teary? Glad that the Dispatcher was able to be with you during the contractions.
My bff is a dispatcher and she told me that whenever someone gets to help deliver a baby, the other dispatchers all put money together to get them a special plaque and buy them food and they all celebrate. She also said that helping to deliver babies over the call is one of their favorite parts of the job. 💖

Kitty’s story is also the example of the bystander effect that is used in a lot of my CJ and psychology classes back in college
You should watch Trials of the Century with Rob(Law and Lumber) , Scott Cardinal, and Runkle of the Bailey. They go into great detail about this case.
I had always been told that story went pretty differently. I’m going to have to do some more research. That case always fascinated me.
@@leighannenails8755 yeah its been disproven that there were that many witnesses with NONE calling. Some tried., but its still used in books and teachings as the example 🤷🏽♀️

My best friend is a 911 dispatcher. Thank you so much for recognizing how they truly are the first of the first responders. She’s the one who hears people at their most vulnerable and desperate. She has on several occasions been the one to hear someone’s last words. She’s helped deliver babies and has talked a man off a roof. She’s an absolute hero and I am so so proud of her and her dedication to helping our community.
As a dispatcher with a sticker on her car of a gold hearse that says “last responder” as a pun for lack of recognition, this episode actually got me teary eyed for a quick second (rare for us when we bounce from a call for someone’s baby not breathing right to someone needing responders because their keys are locked inside their vehicle - little to no time to experience the correct emotions) 🖤 I appreciate the recognition & history! Was a 911 dispatcher for 5 years. Most fulfilling career I've ever had, but also one I'll probably never return to. Thank you to all of our dispatchers that have the strength to stay in it and answer the call ❤❤❤

Predominantly burnout.
Being constantly short-staffed.
Having issues coping with the trauma of some calls.
Having a horrible direct supervisor that added to the stress of an already stressful job.

My mom was a dispatcher almost my whole life and she still has nightmares to this day about calls from the beginning of her career. I think it’s great you chose to do this video and put so much focus on the dispatchers!! It’s so important we recognize the importance they have and that they truly are the FIRST responders. I will ALWAYS have massive respect for all the men and women who take on this job🩷
My mum was a 999 dispatcher for a few years, she had some really tough calls that haunt her 10 years later. Unfortunately the long shifts & switching between days and nights took a toll on her health so she had to leave. Its such an important job and deserves so much more pay

With my anxiety I could NEVER do what you all do. My nerves would be shot by the end of my shift. I feel for you all and appreciate you all.
I really get what you mean. I used to bring dinner to my husband at the dispatch center. He would have to be using the phone, the radio, and the computer pretty much constantly, then there would be some slow times. My stomach would just knot up when I’d go in there.
I was a firefighter and a 911 dispatcher for 8 years. I feel as though the latter doesn’t get as much recognition as they should. It’s an insanely stressful career. Thank you so much for this!!

My partner is a fire fighter & hardly ever gets closure. I’m always like “then what happened?” And he’s like “I don’t know?”.
@@LizzisLoxHair that’s one of the hardest parts honestly. I responded to a 30 year old who was having a massive heart attack one day and he came back like a week later to thank me and my work partner for saving his life. He told us that he had an underlying heart condition he wasn’t aware of and he was now receiving medication for it. It was so amazing to have that closure because the heart attack was so severe that I didn’t know if he survived after arriving to the hospital and I thought about it for days until he came to the station. He was coding in the ambulance so often that I didn’t think he’d make it.
Girl you should do a research on who’s head that was and give us all a video on that one incident ❤

I would love to see you do an episode on the Stolen Generation of Indigenous Australians. I never see it covered or mentioned outside of my country. The movie Rabbit Proof Fence is part of our education curriculum and I think it’s important people know Australia has a dark history other than just being settled by convicts!
As an Australian myself who studied this as part of my degree, I happen to agree with you that the Stolen Generation was a very dark period of our history in addition to the massacres. This needs to be covered especially with National Reconciliation week coming up in late May and Sorry day on May 26th.
That would be a waste of time as the "do-gooders" have rewritten history such as "Dark Emu" by Bruce Pascoe who claimed to be "indigenous" but ancestors were from Cornwall UK... Sadly, for some insane or more likely, money making scheme, the real truth is buried.... Aboriginal kids were willingly given to the missions for better care and education and only one child has been proven to have been removed... The white fella is now too scared to remove abused kids because of the "do-gooders" and the kids suffer...

The Australian indigenous tribes own more of the country than white fellas combined due to "treaty's" the government granted... You are right, it is definitely time to move on but there is too much money to be made by dividing the population into two and the white fella - all immigrants - will be the ones to pay...

As a former 911 dispatcher, this was great. And like you said, we often get yelled at & have to listen to the worst moment of someone's life, without any closure as to how the situation ended or a thank you. We are truly the 1st responder that most people deal with.

My dad was a volunteer firefighter for most of my life. I've now been a dispatcher for 10 years.
As a (now disabled) paramedic of 21yrs, thank you for bringing attention to our coworkers on the other end of the radio! They are the least recognized part of the emergency services chain. My Girl Scout troop decided to make thank you cards for our county EMDs after we roleplayed making 911 calls as part of their First Aid badge. I was pretending to be the 911 calltaker and they each took an turn "calling 911". After the each had a turn one girl asked to be the calltaker. After her turn was over, she noted that even though she knew it was pretend it was still kinda nerve-wracking.
I can’t imagine not having 911 available. That’s scary to imagine in this day in age.
Scary to imagine but a very real issue. At least here We’re so short staffed that 911 calls just keep ringing until we’re able to answer them which could be a couple mins to up to 30. Most times people just hang up which just makes it an even longer wait

As a child in Sweden in the 80's our emergency number was 900000 😱 I still remember how to dial that on a rotary phone in the dark. Now we have 112 wich is a lot faster to dial. This was a very interesting episode. You got me completely hooked on your Dark History. LOVE this show and I love your MMM as well. Take care and stay safe too

My mom was a dispatcher too!!! She used to let me sit overnight with her too and what you described was a core memory as well. She was a dispatcher for over 20 years, but had one call that was so traumatic that she ended up leaving the job 🥺
9:27 Huh, I remember the horrible attack that happened to Kitty a little differently. While she was screaming out for help, everyone in the apartment complex heard her. In fact, one of the Neighbors went over to another Neighbors place (via the roof entrance) to ask what they should do. I believe it was called the Bystander Effect. Everyone thought that someone else was going to belp her that no one did. Let me know what you all think.
Yes, when I was in highschool psychology we had a whole lesson on Kitty's story and the bystander effect!
exactly right! some people even called out from their windows like “hey stop attacking her!!” but went back inside and ultimately no one did anything that could’ve helped her.
She only briefly discussed the attack. What are you so confused about? Nothing she said was inaccurate.
And the man who went to neighbors apartment through the roof didn't go to his neighbor to ask what to do, he went there to use the phone to call the police.
I have listened to dispatch calls on youtube a while back and relized pretty quickly, I probably couldnt handle this job. So thankful for all of you who can! ❤ much respect!

I’m a HUGE fan and i’m an 18 year old dispatcher for my county in central florida. i was very excited when in the last video i watched you acknowledged your appreciation for dispatchers and your stories about your mom. i love you so much!
I did dispatch for 3 years. And to get hired it took about 6 months of various tests, evaluations, and multiple interviews. The hours were insane, it was very stressful and had terrible work life balance. But they are heroes. The first first responders. ❤so much love for the thin gold line 💛 not everyone can do that.

Thank you! As a retired career 911 Dispatcher (police, fire and medical) this was an excellent explanation of the job. My daughter was often at the station with me while I was working as well! Thankfully when she got a little older, she changed her mind and said no thanks to that job lol... Our consoles being literally in the middle of the our station, not in a call center, we did get closure on all of our calls. We also were the jailers. 20 years was enough for me, physically, emotionally and mentally. It definitely took a toll. On a brighter note, not even knowing the name of the town the first 911 call was made, my daughter’s name is Haley 😂😂

i am a 911 dispatcher for over 37,000 people in ohio! thank you for making an episode about what we do. our job can be so hard some days but dispatchers are some of the toughest people i know!! also, i think the eviction law is crazy, but maybe they are just talking about nuisance (aka - shouldn’t be calling 911) callers? like neighbor trouble, “is my power gonna come back on”, barking dog complaints, etc)

I laughed when she pointed out the ‘9’ was the last digit on a rotary phone because where I live our emergency number is 000 😂 our phone broke when I was a kid and my mum used an old rotary phone we had, all I could think was “dialling triple 0 is going to take like 4 years”

I was a 911 dispatcher and absolutely loved my job!! I also took my daughter to work with me like your mom did. My daughter was in 4th grade and felt just as special. Thank you for highlighting the work that we do and letting people know that we ARE the first responders!!
I remember hearing about this poor girl, Kitty. Everyone in her building heard, but did nothing.
As a current dispatcher, it is hard work and the national salary is so low because in spite of all of the effort and training we are required to go through, we are classified as administrative assistants. At my center, we are required to go through the state certification process, plus specific training for telephone CPR, emergency medical dispatch, fire dispatch, skills for taking calls from people who are deaf/mute, and all of the other specifics that are associated within the local. Thank you very much for acknowledging the work we do, the struggles we face, and the general lack of appreciation! As always Bailey, it was a dynamite episode! 🥰💜

Okay this is reeeeeaaallly wild because I was literally JUST thinking “I wonder if Bailey will ever do a DH on 911 calls?” 😱Because I knew of her mom being a dispatcher, but I didn’t know if there was really a “dark history” behind it. I can’t wait to listen to this one!!

Love the recognition Bailey. In the UK, my mom works for the A&E dept (ER) at reception and she usually doesn't find out either what happens to patients she has to register. She sees them go in, registers the injuries, then the nurses take over, so there's too many to follow up on. She wonders too. On the other side, did anyone else start singing the ghostbusters theme to themselves 10 secs after Bailey said it? 😂

As a 911 dispatcher thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to let the rest of the world know how stressful this job can truly be, but most of us love what we do for others!
I found my mom unconscious one afternoon when I came home from work. I knew it was an emergency, ordered my next door neighbor to wait for first responders at the locked gate to let them in and guide them to me (wanted to save vital time), while I was already dialing 9-1-1. The 9-1-1 dispatcher was great. I was as calm as I could be, but hearing the confirmation that CPR was needed… it was tough. She kept me calm, guided me through the steps even though I was CPR certified. I kept focused on her voice and did CPR until first responders arrived. My mom lived.

I learned about Kitty and 911 in my Social Psychology class about the bystander effect. It's such a sad story. Thanks for covering this history and I did a day with the 911 center for my CJ class and I have so much for appreciation for them. I also used to work as a deaf and hard if hearing relay operator. Loved the job but way underpaid.

This was so awesome and thorough! I saw something on tv about the death of a woman calling 911 that they couldn't go help her until she said "she needed assistance. After that a law was passed that they didn't have to get that verbal okay to go help. Unfortunately it didn't help her but helped others.

This is so appreciated! It varies by employer and state, but most public safety employees have access to EAP for counseling that’s 100% free! It doesn’t matter if you’re part time or full time or if you have medical insurance through your employer!
The EAP can be used for anyone living in the household!

I always wanted to be a 911 operator and applied several times but never heard back 😂 I’m too emotional and it wouldn’t have worked out anyways!
We need to recognize how amazing these dispatchers are. Also I think they should definitely all have therapy for free for all they deal with. Plus A LOT more money!!

That BBQ Becky incident happened here in Oakland, California. She said she was mad because they were using charcoal instead of gas. You should have seen how many BBQs people put together at the lake after that 😂
I’m a 911 dispatcher and my mom sent me this video to watch. You taught me some history of 911 that I hadn’t already learned about, but mostly, you explained so well what it is we really deal with day in and day out.
