  • We teamed up with our good friends at Due South Outfitters to put this video together. We spent a day wading and floating on the South Holston River in Tennessee while sharing some guide intel on how to be more successful fishing the tailwaters. We highlight a wide range of tactics so we hope there is something you can take away from the video. A lot of the information is geared towards our technical fisheries in the southeast but can be carried over to any type of water. Enjoy!

    I can’t speak for every angler but we fish pretty much the same here in the West. I fish streamers and hoppers a lot in the bigger water where the resident fish are tucked close to the banks as well as swinging streamers downstream. Also fish dry/dropper on smaller streams targeting pocket water, bubble lines and in front and behind rocks in mid-current. Very informative video guys. Good job.

    • @WildFlyProductions
      @WildFlyProductions  Před 3 lety +1

      No doubt, biggest difference for us is we just use lighter tippet and smaller bugs most of the time.

    • @farmerbob4554
      @farmerbob4554 Před 3 lety

      WildFlyProductions I don’t know if that’s true in all cases. We don’t have Hexagenia mayflies here in the West for instance and we do have a lot of midge activity. Largest conventional dry fly is #16 but usually #18-20 and Subsurface nymphs typically #20-24. You’re right trout seem to be less leader shy from what I remember fishing Eastern waters although there are a lot of very clear tail waters in the West. If it fits through the eye of the hook that’s what I use.

  • @barrettbailey4381

    Question, so about your indicator trick, you’re saying if you put indicator on the thick part of your leader the thick line below the indicator is not good presentation, so in return you add tipper and put your indicator at the very end of your tapered leader, before the knot where you connected your tippet to leader? So you have about how long of an actual set up? You’re normal 9 foot leader and then how many extra feet of tippet do you add? Sorry I’m a little confused but think I understand and really want to utilize this trick, so it goes
    9ft 5X leader, add a couple feet of tippet, then put your indicator on your normal leader right before the connection knot where your tippet and leader connect ? Above the knot I mean ? Thanks

  • @User-es2yz
    @User-es2yz Před 3 lety

    Not really my own invention as I’m sure many people are doing this, but here’s how I do my leaders:
    7.5’ or 9’ 3x leader, with a foot or two of tippet cut off and a trout sized tippet ring added
    4x tippet to first fly
    5x tippet to dropper
    This allows me to break off the rig in stages as the 5x will Break before the 4, and the 4 before the 3, so the leader doesn’t get super gnarled up after one snagged fly.
    In spring if I’m fishing with stonefly nymphs like size 10 I do use 2x then 3x and 4x but when the water gets lower I like the smaller tippet.
    The 3,4,5 allows me to efficiently fish something like a size 12/14 anchor and a 16/18 dropper. A size 10 anchor is possible on it for sure but you may as well fish 3x on the 2x leader if you can and the fish aren’t as spooky.
    A 7.5 3x with a tippet ring on it is a super versatile leader as you could easily snip the nymphs off, put more 3x and fish a hopper/dropper, or put 4x and fish a dry. A fun thing about tippet rings is you can go from 3x to 5x since it’s not an actual knot between the two. I basically use a 7.5 3x for everything other than high water nymphing.
    Hopefully this helps someone!

    • @WildFlyProductions
      @WildFlyProductions  Před 3 lety

      Yeah but, it’s really all relative to where you’re fishing. 5x & 6x work for us but it may be different where you’re fishing. Also, this isn’t the end all be all way to do it BUT it’s been very effective for us.
