- A Steelhead Quest: Portrait of a Rivered Life
Terry Myers, a steelhead advocate and long-time angler, spent 2015 trying to catch a wild steelhead on a different river each month of the year. After successfully hooking a wild steelhead in all but two of the months, she set her sight on finding the last two fish to complete her quest.
The film explores the experience of an unassuming but determined woman on this two-year quest. Watch as she tries to unlock the mysteries of catching wild steelhead through the changing seasons. With her husband Jerry in tow, we see the challenges they face with depleting runs, while still enjoying every aspect of being on the river together-rain or shine, fish or no fish.

Could watch Terry cast all day, what a great video. 10/10
This is a sweet meditation on rivers, fish and love.
Love you guys, for sharing your journey. I grew up fishing on the Siletz. Presently, I'm in La Grande. Troy is my new home... Steelhead Paradise. Godspeed 🙏❤️
Terrific film and even better people.
I recommend the video to ALL I mean ALL Outdoor lovers...I listen to this video over and over again...and still catch gold nuggets of life everytime I look at it. Thank you soooo much!
Almost bringing tears to my eyes. His admirations for his wife is just beautiful to see.
Thank you, this was amazing.
Just beautiful- thank you
Jerry and Terry, what a treasure. Thank you.
This is the most inspirational movie I’ve ever seen that captures fishing, family, and love. Your relationship with family and the river........it’s amazing! The laughter and joy is infectious! I’ve been fly fishing for 6 years now and though my wife does not go with me she sees my passion for this sport. It’s beautiful to be in a sport that will take you to the most breathtaking places. Thank you for sharing.
lol @ 8:20 You are fishing my all-time favorite spot at the end of a Forest Service road on an Olympic Peninsula river that I will not name. Wow...what a special treat to see that spot memorialized in this video. It is something special and I have made so many special memories there. Thank you for sharing the Quest!
When I watch movies like this it really makes me want to just sell up and go! This is what life is all about. I'll start by trying to get over there and catching a steelhead on holiday first!
I'm so glad REI presented this amazing adventure story with its incredible cast of real-life characters. Too often REI only presents young people discovering their abilities outdoors and testing their endurance levels. Those are great stories, to be sure. But the wisdom, contribution and legacy of the older generation to outdoor adventures have made an indelible impression for all to enjoy. I hope REI will feature more stories like this one that celebrate this group of older, often overlooked explorers. It serves as proof that the indomitable spirit of adventure lives in all ages. No particular generation has a monopoly on it.

I could literally watch this amazing woman cast all day. What a truly epic video!
What an awesome story, and marriage.
THE ART OF FLY FLY FISHING IS AN ART & YOU BOTH HAVE BREATHTAKING FORM , YOU'LL ARE LIKE ARTISTS WITH A VERY LONG PAINT BRUSH ! ENJOYED !
Setting aside time every month to go steelhead fishing is so impractical and an unnecessary extravagance...which is more reason that I LOVE THAT THEY DO IT! This warms my heart so much that they do this just because it gives them joy. How many people can say the same? I couldn’t have found this video at a better time. Both the story and the scenery are magnificent.
Beautiful and a great example of how people SHOULD support each other in this life
I’m Taiwanese. I’m really envious of your pastoral life when I saw your videos. Fishing is also what I like. I wish you a happy life and good health.
Any outdoorsman would love to have a wife like Terry. Such a beautiful video. Their casting was so majestic too, wow.
This is my favorite video on the internet.
i dont understand how someone can press thumbs down on this movie ..!!!? such a good carmas
I started playing this thinking I was watching a fly fishing video and soon discovered it was far more than that. We live in New Zealand and have no shortage of fish all year round but so many people don’t realise what we have (might be a good thing) My wife is the adventure taker (currently in South Sudan) and I could relate so much to what you shared. Beautifully put together and what an amazing and inspiring story.... loved it and have sent her the link for when she is back in the land of good internet. Can’t wait for out next adventure (together - just take me with you)
I want this in life
Never made a comment before but feel this time I have to. Quite simply a beautiful film, lovely couple with a great outlook on life.
Lol
Agreed!!!
Well said
Yep! Such incredible camera work and narrative.
What a gem...... They are wise, in love, having fun, and doing this all together. My beautiful guy sent this to me to watch. What a gift. Teared up with joy for them. Just lovely. We live in the lower Florida Keys with just amazing fishing, and this makes me wish for the west. Thank you.
This should be part of a curriculum in schools for so many reasons.
I've watched this every year since it came out and it's more amazing each time. Just when a guy tries to get some other stuff done besides dreaming of fishing I watch this again.
I have made life decisions in the last few years because of this movie😂
I'm not one to typically comment, but this film has earned it. I have been swinging flies for steelhead for a while, and have fallen in love with the sport and the species. I saw this film for the first time when it came out, but watching it again, after even more years of steelhead fishing, I have an even greater appreciation for the message. In my opinion, this film captures the essence and love for these fish that so many have; with a great story and seemingly great people. WELL DONE!
Thanks for taking us along. I really respect your choice to protect stressed fish in warm water. Love your spirits, and the way you compliment each other. This is about much more than fishing. The best to you both!
This was a truly exceptional film. I grew up in Western Colorado and although we weren't chasing Steelhead we were always exploring the rivers and lakes hunting fish. Now I live in Oregon and I'm on the hunt for Steelhead. The comments regarding our responsibility to conserve these beautiful fisheries and places really resonates with me. We are fortunate to experience them and we must protect them. Cheers and thank you!
To have a passion like that as a couple is truly very special and a great film.
I don't get very emotional about videos , but this one was special to me , thanks for all the time and effort to make it and sharing your journey .
one of the most beautiful and inspiring videos i’ve ever watched
I hope there will be a REI Presents: A steelhead Quest 2.
Or i will just have to watch this magical video again and again and again.......
As an 18 year old getting ready to get out and really experience life, this video gives me a lot of hope. Between this couple's love for one another to their never ending seek for adventure. Lovely video. They have worked hard and built an amazing life. Thanks for the gorgeous video with life lessons, and amazing movie making behind it. That's not even mentioning the fish they caught!!
That is for sharing :)
How can you not love these guys!
I truly loved this film and really enjoyed "meeting" this couple. I have started this quest myself a few times but always let myself get dissuaded. Seeing their enjoy in not just the accomplishment but in the pursuit is truly inspirational.
Amazing!! I have a hard time getting through 10 or 15 minute videos and I watched this from befinning to end without a stop. Incredible story about life, love and fishing! As others have said, I would love to fish with this couple!! Thank you for filming it and thank you to Terry and Jerry for sharing yourselves with us!!
A wonderful film to come across on a lazy winter morning..thanks, this was a joy to watch!
What a lovely couple, beautiful film. You are living the dream :) 🎣
What a joy watching you two amazing folks! ❤
Thanks for watching Christopher!
Truly beautiful. This is the way relationships should be--warm, supportive and wonderfully gratifying.
this is so beautiful, i cried watching this. thanks for making this film.
Amazing story and adventure! Whether or not you got lucky that night, you sir are one lucky man to have a partner that is dragging you along to go fishing.
This is the most beautiful and inspiring video that I have ever watched
This may be the best love story I have seen in a long time! I can learn a lot from Jerry.
Whisky and fishing go hang in hand! Beautiful
The two of you are essesene of what "living life to the fullest" means! Great cinematography but even greater people!
He is a lucky man. The energy his beautiful wife emits is incredible. Cheers to lovely people.
Thank you for taking me to places I've never been, doing things I've never done and showing me the kind of love and love for life we all should have.
What an odyssey. I too am on a vision quest. I'm in my mid to late sixties. I've been training to hike into the backcountry of the Pioneer Mountains in Montana to fish high alpine lakes. I was up to hiking an hour and a half with my loaded backpack. Took a break from training to fish with a buddy on the Big Hole River when I fell off the river bank and broke my ankle. Quite a setback. I'm hopeful to re-start my training in June. A vision quest such as these can make life more meaningful. I have accomplished almost all of my life's goals. This should keep me going into the future. Besides, I'd rather be eaten by a grizzly bear than die watching daytime TV.
This is such a powerful film. Very inspirational. Great couple. I'd love for my wife and I to be this couple one day.
What an awesome love story intertwined in fly fishing, great video!
What a great company: to sponsor a film like this and have the courage to send an artful and beautiful message about family, conservation, and love of the outdoors without plugging their products and tooting their own horn
How could anyone give this a thumbs down. This film is wonderful on so many levels.
Seeing a fun couple doing what they love, fishing pristine river locations is what life is all about. Honestly, it doesn't get any better than this. Thanks for making and sharing this great video.
What a wonderful film. Inspiring people. One of my favorite fishing videos ever.
THIS is what fly fishing is all about. Wonderful story; lovely people. Thanks for sharing.
Great story! I'm not even a fisherman and I loved it!! I especially loved how He supported Her in her quest❤️
AMAZING FILM.BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN.THANK YOU!
Loved this documentary - beautifully filmed and inspirational.
I live here in Ireland and spend a considerable amount of time (and money) travelling to the USA and Canada in persuit of not only those magnificient steelheads, but also the magnificient scenery and lifestyle the west coast has to offer.
That video captivated me because it epitomizes the planning, travel, enthusiasm and dedication that goes into each trip.
I was up on the Skeena river in western Canada in August fishing for steelhead and loved every second of it, we are currently planning a return visit there next Sept. And have only just returned from another fishing trip in south west Florida where I had another awesome time.
Keep up the good work and perhaps we may even cross paths (or) fly lines some day, who knows!!
PS Loved the surgeon generals advice about pork sausages and beer!!!! :-)
Beautiful, simply beautiful.
I don’t understand the dislikes! These are a married couple who have a passion for steelheading. And the greatest thing is that neither of them are ego driven. Ego is something that is more prevalent in steelhead fishing. Especially if your a Steelhead guide. Most people think you need that over confidence for these fish. But these two prove you don’t!
What an amazing couple, enjoyed every minute.
It’s all about the experience as much as the fish. Congratulations on creating a movie that portrays this in such an elegant and loving way ❤️
What a great film. Thank you for sharing. I hope you finally caught your July steelhead
I watch this over and over again. I am inspired by this story in a myriad of ways. I love that these humble and unassuming folks are out quietly being living legends.
this is an amazing passion for steelheading in all the right ways!
What couple. Thanks for sharing!
Mighty fine indeed. Many thanks... for this wonderful video.
Its awesome to see you both enjoying yourself together, traveling to fish for steelhead. Get as much as you can
I adored this film. Thank you so much for sharing your quest with us; how wondrous!!!
What an awesome film. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I know that smile so well, I wear it every time I see new water 💙💙💜💜
Great story and videography. Terry's casting is pure art! This is what I picture when I think of a picture of a fly cast.
Absolutely Wonderful film!!!!
What a beautiful film on so many levels! Thank you!
Great video. I'm glad to share a last name with these two. I love the example of their marriage characterized by business, fun, and giving of self.
Direct representation of what LIFE IS ALL ABOUT! Thank you for this! loved it.
The respect and love shown in this film are inspiring.
Life’s goals. They are adorable and fishing in that water with the ice floating past, well that’s just incredible.
The privilege of a beautiful life ! God Bless you two!
What a phenomenal vid!!!! This shows a true appreciation for chrome & great insight into a couple that love each other as much as they love the sport! Well done on the documentary... WELL DONE!!! 👏🏽*Standing Ovation*👏🏽
Awesome. Amazing people and filmed really nicely. Thanks folks. Hope you have many more adventures together
Loved it! What a great film.
One of the best steelhead videos ever
One can sense there's a glow in the lady's eyes just by seeing that subtle smile as she makes the final cast, laying the fly gently into the water you could see that eagerness in her face to hook into that chromie, like a kid catching their first fish .
This couple and the quest they took us on, wow. Just wow!
this is just beautiful, for everyone that loves fly fishing and shearing it with family and friends this is a good representation of what that means, excelent film!!
What a wonderful film. A quest for the soul
Amazing.. 3rd time watching.. Even though i do not have fishing like this.. it inspires you.. inspires you to work hard, relax but do things that you for sure are passionate about. Both of them are passionate about nature, fishing.. such gentle souls.. wish there were more of these "Quests" to watch
I hope this couple make more films I could watch them again and again.
Awesome vid REI. Appreciate this story
This is awesome! I felt like I was actually there experiencing this journey with you.
I admire, Envy you guys. Living the dream rock on 🤘
Thank you for sharing. I just love this. I am also a fisherman. This really touched my heart that she is out there living the dream. What an amazing place to live, play and manage. Terry live it for all it is worth. I actually cried it touched me so. I love the two of you. Keep it up. Thank you. Also thanks for some of the tips I noticed in the video. I am self taught on fly fishing and it is going a bit slow but, having a ball.
Watched this about a year ago n again now. Awesome then n even better now. Simply wonderful film!
Everyone said it over and over but my position in the department of redundancy department requires that I repeat it. Well not all, but it was a beautiful wonderful story of an obvious loving couple who is living the live that all of us want.
Thank you. Nice to see.
You guys made me very happy watching you fish, live, love and promote our great sport! Awesome!
Really amazing film...
Thoroughly enjoyed the film and feel like I have some new friends!!
