I see Infinite as a reflection of our character, both were weak in the beginning but became strong through different means.
Our character relied on their friends and became more confident in themselves as a result, while Infinite was tempted by the Phantom Ruby's power and eventually became more machine than man after going through so much pain and trauma.
What annoys me though is how the writers didn't go into enough depth with him and ultimately made Infinite out to be more of a tryhard edgelord than a character we should actually be invested in, they couldn't even be bothered to write an actual conclusion for his story in Forces.
I'd love more than anything for Infinite to come back in another game so he can be further expanded upon, but I don't think that's going to be happening at all...

10:34 During the final Boss fight, Sonic and the gang actually comment on how Infinite is hiding his fear and loneliness behind his mask and bravado, actually.
21:01 B4 he became infinite, his deepest desire was to see the world fall to ruin. not EXACTLY suicide, but there's' crossover there
21:34 Heterochromia is often shorthand in media for characters with mental trauma. The GUN Commander also had heterochromia for similar reasons.
A thing Infinite does throughout the game is constantly adjust his mask. Its interesting because there is no real reason the animators would need to have him do that unless it was an intentional detail about his insecurity.
Also, he constantly spares people in the same way he was spared by Shadow.

I suffer from PTSD and this character resonated with me for some reason. There's no doubt he's a twisted individual (Iizuka described him as such, so it's canon he was a ruthless mercenary before the trauma), but there were so many things that clearly told us there was something more. The way he keeps adjusting his mask, his fingers doing that little twitch when he's threatening the avatar and many other things, this character is obsessed with proving the world that he isn't weak, to the point of delusion. I'm glad I found this video.

“But I think SEGA couldn’t really say anything about Infinite destroying the world over his teammates. It would’ve been a bit too intense.”
To be fair though, the game (in the English script) also had mentions and implications of torture when Sonic was captured in the Death Egg for 6 months, so they should’ve really gone the whole 9 yards, especially taking into consideration the previous games stories, for instances when Robotnik summoned a god embodying chaos to flood Station Square (and possibly the rest of the world after that) to build Robotnikland upon it’s ruins, and also when Robotnik’s grandfather planned to destroy the world by crashing the Space Colony ARK into the Earth out of vengeance for his granddaughter’s death.

I know someone with PTSD, he could have the personality disorder though, although, Infinite could have a small portion of PTSD. Shadow seems more of a character has PTSD. Because of the whole arc incident and is SA2 and parts of Heroes he has quite a bit of flashback and that the whole reason he wanted revenge on the planet and such. Shadow also has shown throughout the series that he does indeed have stress moments when he stares off and hallucinates or he freezes up as he thinks about the past

It does seem possible from my own experiences Infinite has PTSD it's very similar to how I reacted and do react.....
I've dealt with a lot of crap, seen family and friends in danger and I did nearly die for a moment a few years ago. I won't go into detail about it cuz I get worked up badly thinking about it.
I can say with confidence though that Shadow has/had it. (He seems happier these days and not weighed down by his past).
People are saying the mask is symbolic. It’s not. It’s confirmed Shadow fucked up his face in that scene where shadow kicks him in the face and he also whacked his face into a wall. He kept touching his face like he had damaged it badly. Logically speaking why would he cover one eye for symbolism. He’d have a better time fighting people and such with both eyes not covered. (They can’t show it cuz you know under 8 year olds play this game).

Something I️ think about is a similarity between SA2 shadow and infinite, both once had friends who were killed and they put heavy blame on the person who did it (for shadow the world and for infinite shadow) both despise the world and worked with eggman seemingly only for themself, infinite wanted power and shadow wanted to destroy the world, they both seem to have a recollection of the events that led them to become the person they became, infinite interacts with the mystic jungle but most specifically usually ends up back where he first became who he was, it’s possible he could of been going through mystic jungle to pay respects to his squad, shadow heavily associated himself with the arc and mainly rooms where he was with Maria, example being the room where him and Maria stared down at earth, and they both have some association with eggman other than working with him, shadow was created by eggmans grandfather and infinite worked with eggman, it’s very flawed and most likely means nothing but it is something to think about

hi someone with ptsd here, honestly i think shadow is more of a better representation of someone who suffers with ptsd, bad memory (not remembering taking down the jackal squad, not fully remembering the events with maria), flash backs to the traumatic events that get triggered by something (shadow remembering maria at the sound of sirens in sa2), irritability (too many examples to name), difficulty experiencing positive emotion (like, hello? i could probably count the number of times shadow genuinely smiles on one hand), guilt (do i even need to explain), theres just too many connections with shadow's behavior not to at least consider shadow having ptsd, at least to me as someone with ptsd i can really see my experiences reflected in shadow.

I think I can relate to Infinite. I'm not known for being a very rational thinker in tough situations and always expect something really bad to happen in a not so serious situation.
Mainly cause I lived and currently am living in a very abusive family environment. I was beaten with belts, tossed, pushed or punched with great amounts of force. These punishments never taught me to be better.
They only taught me that mistakes should only be met with punishment and pain. I still kind of believe that is the cause to this day. I know it's wrong but I don't know any other way or just find it impossible to change.
I was suicidal at one point but I cared about my friends too much to actually pull through with it. That and since I'm religious I was/still am scared eternal damnation.
When Infinite theme was first uploaded to youtube I had been in an argument with someone I was close with. I don't remember who. I just listened to the theme over and over and over again.
Listening to the lyrics and understand the message behind them. The message was clear to me. All Infinite feels is anger and the need to cause pain for entertainment. Scars only remained of who he was.
I felt the same way. I had been tortured by my family for years until I broke. I started having major hallucinations around mid 2016. Shadow figures and all. Reality felt as if it was breaking
I could say 2016 was the worst year of my life and I get annoyed easily when I see or even utter that number.
Being trapped in my small room for 3 months straight without contact from the outside world besides school can damage someone badly. Since I'm part of the Furry Fandom I had my own fursona.
He was super joyful with Brightly colored fur. The Kind of person who you would see at every party in town But, after my months of suffering. My sona changed. To be a dark and mentally twisted individual.
I felt I was him. I felt he was taking over my mind. At times I would have dreams where the world was falling into chaos. I am constantly reminded of the terrible events from the past.
I don't avoid places cause I can't. I never had a choice. I felt no mercy for anyone. I felt humans were my problem.
I saw animals being tortured in food processing facilities like I was. Trapped in a room and lead to their death. while I didn't physically die. I died in a different way. I don't feel happiness anymore.
I don't feel joy and the only hope I have in getting it back is dying. That I will ascend into heaven and be who I really am. no destruction. No Pain. just peace and eternal love. But, until then
I will always feel destructive and in need of control.

As someone who's had PTSD, I think you may be right in suggesting that Infinite may be afflicted with it, despite not displaying all the popular symptoms. The person may very sane and say 'I don't have PTSD, I've never been in trauma', when in fact they do have it because of something 'traumatic'. It's important to realize that a thing that's traumatic for one person may be a walk in the park for someone else, or even anyone else. I'm currently writing a fanfic where my OC was attacked by Metal Sonic, and thereafter has PTSD regarding robots. It's possible that in the jackal's case, the traumatic event was 'being deemed too little of a threat to bother with, and therefore left alive to live on in fear and inadequacy'. That being said, it makes more sense now why Infinite "spared" the avatar instead of finishing them off like we saw him do to the others not ten seconds prior. It's possible that his 'reliving' of the traumatic event is the act of himself causing it to others in this manner, almost as if he were trying to tell Shadow, "I can traumatize better than you", or otherwise trying to take Shadow's place in the moment of trauma. I disagree that loosing his squad was traumatic because it possibly has happened before, though probably not all of them at the same time. He did call himself 'The Ultimate Mercenary', a title with a similar ring to the one we associate with the unstoppable black and red hedgehog.
All that aside, I'm surprised Sega got away with Sonic's very brief moment of anticipated suicide near the end of Sonic Lost World. I personally consider that a little closer to crossing the line than PTSD.

Myself, Autism, been hospitalised - lost friends emotionally physically, had my world torn down, hobby taken from me and I face someone every day right now.
They look me in the eye, and tell me I don’t have PTSD, because I didn’t directly have their dad, point a gun at my head and pull the trigger. Trying to drown me, living on the streets from the age of 6-7,
PTSD, comes in many guises, and Infinite is an interesting character.
As someone who *does* in fact suffer with PTSD, that I directly told my last boss. Last year was HELL, for me, and the end result is of course best case for myself (without being specific) - I was let go, I still felt emotion and anger towards individuals who put me there.
Individuals who, intentionally did horrible things to myself and everything I lived for. Because ‘it was their job’ - was their response, to me telling them bluntly. They were lucky they got the chance to speak to me, and that I am still alive wandering the world.
These people are, quite frankly meant to be protecting the innocent, they deliberately ruined me.
So, 1. From my perspective, I know I have PTSD. I played episode shadow a very long time ago, the moment I saw Infinite did not have his mask on, and that was the change between episode shadow and the main game?
I wouldn’t have said, PTSD. However, the fact he is distant to everyone, and became a new person, implies to me more along the lines of a ‘personality’ disorder, there is a condition called a ‘fugue state’ which, one night you wake up and your someone else, I’m bob, I grill burgers! I have a wife, Miranda!
That can happen, sort of, your mind creates a version it could see itself within, allowing you to live your life in free conscious of anything you may have seen/experienced before.
I for example, managed to get 2-3 years before I started piecing things together, like a nagging sensation that something wasn’t right. Especially considering I ended up in hospital having full scans, for no real reason. What does that tell you? - they obviously think something is wrong, but won’t tell you what that is.
Infinite, doesn’t have that. Or maybe he does, maybe he had, I came around to one point and realised I had changed my name, I was this person, in full acknowledgement, but I rejected it, in my mind, I rejected reverting to who I was, and made myself take the new name/personality. Which was probably for the better,
I just have to deal with my mind telling me one thing, I then have to work out what I’m gonna go and do, then do the correct thing. For both emotionally and physically to be a ‘good person’.
Infinite, might not have had that.
Make no mistake, infinite does have something in the mental health department. It’s not PTSD, directly, but it definitively was a choice he made, I’d say.
And to confirm for myself, I had to leave my job for my mental health. I then, have had to have arguments with the government over why I can’t use certain transport and certain times of day, in certain times for me to be leaving my house.
PTSD, is no joke, and I 100% back any writers who try adding a bit of complexity into characters by adding these kinds of issues, especially given the story has to be understood by. 1. Adults. 2. Children,
The adults want it to be fleshed out more, but the children want the gameplay and seeing the hero win. Infinite, was a cool character. I’m a bit surprised he was not given a bit more of a ‘I’m the final boss’ guy, tbh, he’s a bit too fore- front, which is fine but we fight him like 4-5 times?
Just my two cents. (Although. Boss fights were ‘pretty good’ in the game)

While Infinite surely does have PTSD, I think that he already was very desillusioned with the world before. And if anything, his defeat by Shadow only made it worse. He must have seen a lot of hardships to acquire this mentality of "the strong prey upon the weak", and PTSD just made him go over the edge.
I definitly understand (and relate to) the self-loathing "I am not that person anymore" thinking myself, but I think Infinite already had these problems and insecurities before. He just had his squad and his position as leader to balance them out.

During the Rise of Infinite comic, we see Infinite leading his troops on a raid of one of Eggman's bases for tech to loot and sell. Then Infinite touches the Phantom Ruby, turns on a dime, we're all familiar BUT- an important detail is left almost completely to the background. The rest of Jackal Squad tells Infinite that joining Eggman is a bad idea, but they clearly decide to go with the decision of their leader anyways, because during the Mystic Jungle level of Episode Shadow and the cutscene that follows, Eggman talks about Jackal Squad, and it's implied through dialogue that Shadow killed them. Of course, during the stage, only badniks are fought, and the badniks in Forces are all fully mechanical, no roboticization, so this means they must have been taken out just before the start of the stage itself. More dogshit writing. Anyways, once Shadow reaches the Mystic Jungle Eggman base, Infinite attacks Shadow head-on with no regard for his own safety, because all his friends were just killed and he's obviously in shock. He fails, but then he really loses it, BECAUSE he failed his team. It was his own weakness that caused his failure, so this leads him to, very likely, beg Eggman for another chance. Eggman sees an opportunity to test his copies of the Phantom Ruby on a living organism, so he somehow fuses it with Infinite, likely through surgery. This is why the Infinite within the main story of Forces is so cold and edgy, he's traumatized, and blames himself for the deaths of his squad, his friends and family. He refuses to get close to others even with the means to protect them, because he refuses to ever feel that heavy a loss again.

I don't think he's partially blind. Blind eyes are generally displayed as white and foggy iris or non-existent in animation. The scar is just there to make him look tough. I think the reasoning behind blocking out that eye with his mask is because it's a clear indication he was the jackal formerly known as 'Zero'. There's also no indication that he's suffers from poor depth perception as one would with only one eye.

    • @soulbound2
      @soulbound2 Před 2 lety

Well.... I mean in episode shadow we see shadow attack infinites face and we don't actually look at his face and I'm just saying maybe shadow gouded out infinites eye or hurt him to where it became blind?
But that's just my thought he probably is fine maybe but I mean who's to say

  • @colinehasaki
    @colinehasaki Před 8 měsíci +1

I love this idea, and as much as for the mask, the dialogues etc, those random canon attacks during the battle against him with OC are so off putting.
The way that it changes the whole ambiance all the sudden. The music stops, there's a terrifying BOOM like "This is happening to you right now" with the red distortions and all,
That feeling is completely different from when the fight started, kind of like it didn't happen at the same time and place. Like it didn't even belong here.
Also during this attack, the vibe reaks of "fear", like Infinite himself was recreating what he felt at that moment.
I am a veeeery late new Sonic fan and I only discovered about Infinite today.
I heard his name one to many times in a single video and wanted to check out who he was.
In my research, the first video title/thumbnail that struck me the most was yours, but I hadn't yet seen his story or even Sonic Forces story.
So I watched the whole cutscenes movie (really good btw I love it, I didn't play the game so I could focus only on the story, visuals, dialogues etc) , just so I could finally watch this video.
But I kept in mind the idea of him having ptsd during the whole thing and it simply works, I actually really like the guy now.
That's why some scene stuck to me more than others ahah.
It looks so cool in my head.
In other words, you might have saved my experience of Sonic Forces xD

I personally think he'll come back somehow, I mean what happened to Infinite on the Phantom Ruby's doing remains unclear and the Phantom Ruby is still wandering around these dimensions if you follow Sonic Mania Plus, I think personally he may be trapped in Null Space or Something, I mean think about Eggman, Do you have any idea how many times he got stuck to some unescapable places and Always managed to come back like it was all Nothing? Take an example on Sonic Generations, his defeat with his past self made them trapped in the void where there's absolutely nothing and somehow they managed to come back once again.
Unless of course they died until the restart of the big bang in creating multiverses with the restart of pre-history brought them back to life. But on the IDW comic it wasn't fully clear what happened to Eggman until he was back with his memory erased and continuing it's sequel

With the idea of Infinite's mask being knocked off, I think he would slightly panic because he didn't realize what was happening because his mask would have a link to the Phantom Ruby which would've had him in a controlled mind state. An Illusion, if you will, in where he would see himself as an all-powerful deity of destruction. But when he comes back to his senses, he would realize all of the destruction he caused. Turning on Eggman, and working with the heroes to destroy the evil within.

I sort of created a backstory to explain Infinite's obsession with strength.
His father WAS the Ultimate Mercenary. He was essentially the Jango Fett of the Sonic universe.
And he expected his son to be Boba.
Infinite's father was incredibly harsh on him, the ideology of strong vs. weak came from Infinite's father, whose parenting went accordingly.
So, when Infinite's father disappeared, the boy was left wih a whole cocktail of issues as he formed Jackal Squad to try and live up to the expectations his father placed on him.
Cue Shadow beating the shit out of him.

Jackals are like wolves in a way; family members stick together to form small/loose packs. They also mate for life.
MEANING: when Shadow kills off The Jackal Squad…chances are, he MASSACRED INFINITE’S ENTIRE FAMILY.
Yes, there is no guarantee that it was his entire family, but most likely; those jackals are the people he grew up with, his litter, his brothers and sisters, people he knew since the start of his life. Loosing everyone he has ever known and loved all in the span of a night would definitely leave some damage to mental health.
