- We take a look at a couple of gorgeous .308 rifles. The 7.62X51 is a wonderful round, and there are some really special rifles chambered for it.

Of course! My wife comes home and catches me running around the house, jumping from kitchen sink to the dining room table with the fully loaded SCAR17. I've accidentally broken most of her fine China doing this. What she hates the most is when I shoot my AK47 in the shower, just testing how it functions under adverse conditions. :-)
Cool
Legendary
Freakishd really is
U been drinking and drugging?:) Clearly been smoking too much pot on video.
Lol
This guy needs his own television show.
+alphabetsoup342 We HAVE our own show. You might hate it if we were slaves to whatever the networks wanted us to do or to advertise or to shoot, or to say, etc. :-)
+hickok45 what state are you in sir
+alphabetsoup342 YOUR WATCHING IT,,,NOW
Yeah... I know.
he has one it's called hickock45
I was in a grocery store one time getting ready for a barbecue when I heard a rumble from the next isle..
I went to find the noise and found myself in the coke isle and the two liters were shaking uncontrollably..
Moments later Hickok45 walks past the isle and then I understood..
It seems the two liters were shaking out of fear.
Hickok45 for President
He would have to change his name to hickok46 lol
pl
Hell yea!!
3:30 "the Garand, the sort of grandfather to this gun" Guess he could say it was the Garandfather...hehehe
Good one!
hickok45 thanks :) Your videos are awesome btw, you look like you're having a great time just makin videos both entertaining and informative for your subscribers! keep up the good work, good sir!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You are like the Bob Ross of the gun world:)
We're going to shoot some happy little trees.
LMAO
Lol
100nitrog win
“A man can be an artist in anything, food, whatever. It depends on how good he is at it. Hickock's art is smoking pots. He's about to paint his masterpiece.”
I purchased the Socom 16. I have no regrets. One heck of a battle rifle!! 308 is a real threat neutralizing cartridge! Great video!! Thank you.
If I was gifted one of these rifles, but I could choose, I would pick the Springfield Socom 16 for sure!
The advantage of the M-1 style safety is that you can put a lock through it.
Ah what it must be like to live in a free country, (from the UK)
It rocks
Luke McInerny We need to enjoy it while we can. There's a lot of young, starbucks-type diphits here trying hard to elect a socialist.
+Jess Johnson Yeah, the balance is uneven and leaning towards liberal/democrat. There should always be an even balance, but people don't listen :/
***** we'll always have it. The only way we lose it when we allow it to be lost. Never forget
+Jess Johnson
California liberal here who loves his guns. Believe it or not, there are some of us liberals who don't think black polymer guns are scary implements of mass murder. That said, I don't want to live in a GOP country, nor a Democrat one either, necessarily. There aren't any politicians sitting in the middle ground that support civil rights and gun rights. Sanders is about as good as it gets, but trust me, a few of his votes are things I really, really hate.
That SOCOM16 is sweet.
As an old M-14 lover, I find that SOCOM fascinating. On Social Security I'll never be able to afford one, but it would sure be fun to shoot!
Maybe you can rent one from a gun range just to shoot. Or borrow from a friend.
If you’re in Idaho get ahold of me and I’ll let you shoot one bud.
The recoil test was actually very clear in my mind. The SCAR stayed planted in the shooting position whereas the SOCOM slide all over the place. I saw a BIG difference!
Picked up a SOCOM 16 a couple weeks ago. Had a choice between this and a standard M1A and I just loved the shorter overall length of the SOCOM. People online who bash this gun's accuracy are clearly not very good shots themselves. Obviously it's not going to be sub-MOA, but that's not the point of this rifle. It was designed as a combat rifle, not a rifle to be fired from a bench to try to make tiny groups on a piece of paper.
could not have said it better myself.
I have an M1A with a Krieger HBAR, it shoots sub MOA, but that's with the full length barrel. The only problem I have with it is trying to find an affordable and reliable scope mount.
I've had good performance from my Sadlak mount so far. But I haven't put more than a few hundred rounds through it so far.
Agreed 100% but the M1A was also designed as a combat rifle and is still issued in the military
@Chris Indermuehle That couldn't be further from the truth bud. The USMC and Army DM's use the KAC SR-25/M110; the Army is now switching from the M110 to the Heckler and Koch M110A1 CSASS (which I'll hopefully be issued later this year, hopefully); basically an H&K G28 without the G28 rail. You also have the EBR which isn't as widely used as it was in the early 2000s but still used. So that's three rifles right there, chambered in .308, that are used by conventional troops.
In the Army in the 1960's they trained us to take the safety off of the M14 by using your thumb. Never stick your finger inside of the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot. After a while it becomes automatic to do it that way
Interesting that the technique isn't in the FM 23-8 for the M14 Rifle & Marksmanship.
I'll be trying it out on my M1A.
Yes sir that is exactly how I trained on the M14. 1st Cav Scout 11D20R8.
Man, after watching a lot of Hickok videos you can really hear how much faster and harder that .308 hits the targets compared to other calibers.
Stig's Italian Cousin I could be wrong but I believe 556 and 308 travel around the same speed, just 308 is a much bigger bullet size so more total energy.
cornelius blanchard depending on grain size but typically with your average grain size 556 is 150 to 500 fps faster, but both calibers have the capibility to go way faster then your average grain size.
Typically from what I've read and seen. 5.56 is the faster of the two.
556 on average is around 300 fps faster than 308 at the muzzle, but 556 loses speed a lot faster than 308 does
Yeah. .308 on average depending on powder and bullet weight is going about 2700-2800 FPS. .223 can go up to 3100 and faster. The trade off being .308 is able to hit farther due to the weight of the bullet being twice that of a .22 caliber bullet. .308 has a better ballistic coefficient overall then .223. But both are great calibers.
Thank you California, for narrowing my choices.
Fight the laws that are wrong or take it
James Smit that’s what we’re trying to do, or at least the more reasonable ones
Paul Ryan Castillo or move and let their economy go to crap
Thanks Governor Reagan...
I live in England. The mere thought of owning a gun is forbidden.
Thanks! One thing to do before going out in the field, or battle, is to check and tighten up all screws and other parts that may have come loose from use. One time, while in the Army '64-'68, I found my M-14 front sight had become loose and was wandering every shot. I knew exactly where it had been and had to BE but there were no armorers around and nobody had an Allen wrench, of course. A mess kit fork did the job. Moral, carry a full set of Armorer's tools or keep your fork!Just a little humor, there Hickock.... Bill
UncaBill1 With "jokes" like that it's a shame you made it back from the army.
Were you killing babies in the 3rd world with the US army?
Shirley Bertrand how many war orphans did you adopt Shirley?
Kyle Bradley None, the world shouldn't have to clean up Americas mess everytime the pentagon wants to try the next generation of weapons or a republican wants a second term. I alreaddy donate 30$ a month to help the war orphans in Syria thanks to Obamas and Bushs mess.
Shirley Bertrand So when America intervenes in a conflict, wouldn't that be cleaning up someone else's mess? But you donate 30 dollars so that will make up for everything and set the world straight :) I'm glad you have the opportunity to make yourself feel like you're better than other people who sacrificed part or all of their lives to try to make the world a better place. Some of us weren't content with sitting around complaining.
Kyle Bradley Bullshit, the countries that Americas "intervening" in don't even want Americas help! They know that both the American gov and the American soldier are not there to help or for 'MUH FREEDOM' like Americans say everytime they commit warcrimes are try to bully the world its for "freedom" NOBODY believes you. Even the common American soldier only joined srmy because your country is OBSESSED with guns, death, and violence. That's why America has a homicide rate 10× higher than almost all other western nations. What a joke when u say that taking away guns from people that they couldn't possibly need just for home defence wouldn't change murder rates. England got rid of guns and they're much much lower homicide rate than America! You all watch way too much Hollywood bs thats propaganda for the pentagon to get you dummies to join the army, sad most Americans don't even know that FACT that Hollywood gets huge breaks if they make a film with army equipment thats flattering to the army
Wow, I didn't think I'd find a lot of comments of people thinking the M14 is such a beautiful rifle like I do. Glad I was wrong
"im not gonna get into the gas system"
>immediately tears apart the gas system
Brandon Maguire 😂
Ikr? 😁
It IS supposed to be an effective muzzle break; however, I'm going to replace it when I get some time and find one I like. I hate the blast from this one. I'll sacrifice a little muzzle rise with a more "sane" muzzle break. :-)
I was on a ship that contained 40 M14's and now I own a SOCOM 16 and I have to say that I just LOVE this weapon. While the SCAR has some features, you can't argue against the reliability of the M1A family.
The black SCAR is the most gorgeous modern rifle I've ever seen beats the standard desert camo by miles
The 18" Scout Squad M1A with the walnut stock is one of my favorite rifles of all time. Definitely my favorite M1A model.
I like the socom 16 walnut stock, that’s my favorite rifle. Rather have that than the scar
The M1 is a beautiful gun. I understand the SCAR is a good one but some guns I fall in love with immediately. I fell in love with the M16 I was issued also, an arranged affair I suppose. You never forget your first love.
The M14 will always be the most beautiful gun in the world.
Yep Im a fan too.
I concur
Well said sir.👌
Yess finaly a smart guy
Yep
This is by far the BEST video description of weapons. Great detail, good history of each guns great video!
I think I've watched all your videos, I learned a lot from them. Thank you Sir Hickok45.
"i won't get into the gas system" *gets into gas system* hahaha
thug lyfe
actually it was " now I gotta get into the gas system I guess"
no he says the 'i won't get into the gas system' earlier then later he says he will get into it he guesses haha
+Nick 'Dutchie' sorry Nick replay ot a fww more times and if your honest you will Hear What I Hear
actually he says "im not going to get into the gas system" sounds like he said he would but he was going to say something else then interrupted himself to say "im not going to get into he gas system here" sorry mate maybe slow it down or keep replaying it.
That SOCOM would make a great hog gun. Unfortunately in Australia one has about as much chance of owning one of those as owning a real flying saucer. Gun laws restricting law abiding gun owners keeping us safe down here, don't you know....
bet you guys have some pretty incredible sling shots lol
would love to go on a hog hunt
***** got plenty of hogs here, but we can't have semi auto firearms
mudbutton2 Hah, sounds like Canada
meanwhile in the UK the law for air rifles is stricter than for actual rifles in the us. Kinda sad tbh, good job I get to go to the US plenty to shoot.
I show my Nephew all your videos. Reason being you show superb gun safety! Thank you for a great program.
Two of my favorite firearms right there! Had me smiling the entire show. Keep up the good work sir. Absolutely enjoy your channel.
From a crusty old Army guy. M14 was my first issued rifle. It became very easy to strip down after you did it day after day. So the scar 17 would be a challenge for me at first.
What great rifles. To my eyes the M1A is a better looking gun, but if someone dropped the SCAR on my porch I wouldn't complain!
I think I enjoyed hearing about the small brass rod almost as much as I did about the rifles. felt like I was there with you. Thanks for the video. Also I would like to add John is really Great at what he does. I have tried it and it is not as easy as he makes it look.
I'm glad you did this comparison, I love the socom 16, and I'm also interested in the scar 17. Thanks hickok45.
Hickock45 Thanks again for making great videos. I sold hundreds of both rifles for a large gun retailer. They are both great. I picked up a Socom 16 that came in in trade. I could almost buy 2 Socom 16 for the price of the SCAR17. If the US Treasury was paying for mine I would take the SCAR17 to the badlands.
hickok45 I want to say that your sir, are the MAN!
As a Brit I am amazed how free you are, just talk so casual about this subject. You guys are so free.
Trying to keep it that way :)
That was a smooth breakdown on both of those babies. Not compete but pretty good stuff. Thank you so much for everything you do. Be blessed.
I guess you could say the Garand was the M1A's "Garand-father". Lol
+Ethridge Gave me a chuckle
knee slap*
As someone who trained on am M1A I did have a good laugh at this.
Ethridge that was a good one man!
Although the M1 was really the father of the M1A, the original M1As were essentially M1 Garands with magazines and fire selectors added.
They mother of the M14 might be the M1/M2 Carbine, as it was basically the same core concept, take an M1 receiver and give it the ability to load magazines, later adding the capacity for Automatic fire, except while the M1 Carbine was a different rifle in every way except the bolt, the M14 was literally a direct modernization of the M1 Garand.
Deff need your own show Hickok.
+Dakota Mendoza Silly me; I thought that's what we have? :-)
+hickok45 love your show
+hickok45 how do I get my wife to let me buy a socom ? I'm thinking a socom for me and a diamond for her. what do you think Mr.45?
ditch the wife and you won't have to ask about the socom nor buy the diamond. problems solved.
That's what I did Nick X and I got the Socom
Literally got my first Socom 2 days ago and haven't learned to take it apart yet. Thanks for showing the breakdown! I'm oiling up the gun now
Thank you Mr Hickok and Mr Hickok
Always my pleasure to watch your stuff. May the God above bless you for your great videos
I just wanna hang out with this guy for a day. What a legend.
hick45... a 2 liters worst nightmare. haha
I went to college at Norwich University and we used to have a bunch of old decommissioned M14s as our drill rifles. I remember passing the time freshmen year disassembling and reassembling my rifle down to the bolt, I think my best time was just around 45 seconds total. Always loved that rifle just for its shear weight and power of the 7.62 although I've never shot an M14, more well versed firing my M4. Love your videos Hickok!
Mr.Hickok, Thank You for posting such great videos. When you review a firearm, I feel like I'm right there with you. Whoever does your camera work does a great job, IMHO. They always choose great camera angles that gives a better view of the firearm. Better than most gun reviews. I always learn something from your videos and they are entertaining as well. Keep up the Great work sir
It's been awhile but this Old Salt Marine can see it in My Dreams a beautiful rifle you take care of it it takes care of you
That scar 17 hit that red plate with some authority
I think the m1 hit harder
BurnedSpace there both good guns.. I jus think the SCAR 17 has a Lil head start
+James grant yes, I would take them both in a heartbeat if I had the chance, but I think that m1a has a little more kick in her
Chris In Minneapolis it jus seems the SCAR has more velocity
lol they both are 16in barrels firing the same round. That’s like saying a Glock 19 hits harder than a sig p229 both in 9mm
One of my favorite videos. Thanks!
I always love how down to earth he is.
I love these guns I love this guy this is the coolest video I've seen in 2021
The SOCOM 16 is surely much better, not only it has a gene of classic design of its family, but the sound, man it's like a roar from a dragon! Classic!
Another great video Hickok45. Thanks
I enjoy every minute of your videos!!! Keep up the good work. Now I need to go work some overtime to buy one of these awesome rifles. Thanks hickok.45.
well we in Lithuania military just recently replaced m14 with scar-h for special forces and land forces recon teams and most soldiers are happy about that.
Two sweet rifles to live by.
i gotta say,i love watching ur videos. not only are they entertaining, but they r educational as well,u give alot of history on the gun u r shooting..makes me wanna expand my gun collection lol.keep up the great vids!
Sir, please keep making those tutorials and reviews ! I learned differences on how guns work. Thank you for fulfill my desire on firearms :D
"If I had to go to battle" I'd pick the 75 year old War-horse
I'd pick Hickok , too. That 75 year old warhorse. Hahaha.
There's a reason elite units choose the scar and the common soldier the M14
Shirley Bertrand Yeah and one of the biggest reasons is that those elite soldiers will already have thousands upon thousands of hours training with the AR platform which the Scar mirrors. There is no unit that widely uses the M14 where the SCAR is readily available.
You can have the 75-year-old horse. I'll ride in on a fresh one.
Shirley bertrand usually socom units get huge deals from weapons manufacturers because every manufacturer wants to say or best use their rifle. Special operations forces have no spending limit so they can get things that are to expensive to outfit every soldier with. This should mean that they can buy the best but often times what is advertised as the best is quickly disputed in the hands of a special forces operator and the harsh conditions they work in. The scar 17 is a good rifle, but a lot of spec ops dudes don't like the reciprocating charging handle. The action can become obstructed and fail to cycle. It can injure the user and it makes shooting against a wall or laying down sideways more difficult. Yes the m1a has the same issue. An ar10 doesn't have this issue but gets fouled up more quickly then an m4 (which is already bad enough as it is) do to it's di gas system. I have the sig mcx for these reasons, gas piston, folding stock, free float barrel, attachable rail mount system that takes the weight of the quad rail off, a non reciprocating charging handle with ambidextrous controls and sub moa accuracy and easily serviceable. If they did this to a 308 it would be a win
Having spent 16 years in the British Military, is it just me , or does the SCAR look remarkeably similar to the SLR(FN FAL) Loved that rifle, hard hitting 7.62 round, much better than the 5.56 that they've adopted now. In my opinion. :-)
I like your vids hickok. Not only because of the great guns presentation but I also learn english from your shows
Thanks.
Mr. hickock you are great, I really enjoy your gun reviews. I watch you all the time.
M1A is beautiful
14:30 Hickok 45 got some serious hitch hikers thumb o.0
Love the sound of the action on Socom over the Scar.
What I love about the SCAR design is that there is no piston rod to break. The short piston pushes the massive bolt carrier group directly!
I want those two firearms so bad 😍
That SCAR seems to have a lot more loose parts when disassembled than I like. With the M-1/14 variants the only little part is the extractor but I don't take them out that often. Loose parts, pins, keepers, etc can disable a rifle fast when cleaning them in the field if you drop one in the grass or something. And you can only carry so many spares.
Great point
The difference in muzzle rise is visibly noticable. Well done, Hick.
I thought I've seen it all…this guy is the MAN! awesome
I love the M14/M1A, and have been into it since the mid-60's. I would GLADLY carry one. Even the "non-Match Grade" versions are scary-accurate, even through good ol' iron sights. That said, anyone who has run FN's with the geometry of the rig helping to keep-down the recoil and muzzle-rise, would tell you that a lighter-framed guy could run the FN all day long, with less wear-and-tear, than the M1. I'm 5'-10", and 200 pounds, solid, but I still find the FN to be much gentler to run, especially mag-after-mag, even from what is a relatively lighter rifle. I'd happily run EITHER weapon, but, for someone who is not wanting to be hammered, as much, by recoil, and who wants to avoid as much muzzle-rise, the FN is easier to use, in that respect. To be blunt, despite the fact that the M14 had been issued as a selective-fire weapon, and even had a special stocked version, with a vertical pistol grip, for use as an early SAW (Sqaud Automative Weapon), the military had to come to grips with the reality that, at full-auto, the M14 was not as controllable as one would want it to be. I don't mean insofar as hosing-through a door, right before a dynamic entry, but more insofar as being able to use it in the way something more like an M60 or an M540B, or, more appropriately, an M249, just for suppressing the "bad guys." But, since your reviewer, here, is talking about semi-auto ONLY, then it's fair to say that BOTH the M1A and the FN SCAR are outstanding systems. I've never had any issues with the M1A's safety. One could allow as how this front-of-the-trigger-guard system was one of the original, old-school, "AMBIDEXTROUS" safeties! Now, you DO have to rock-in the mags, like on an AK, or a Mini-14, or an old FN-FAL (L1 A1), on an M1A, if THAT bothers you, but, frankly, that's not too hard to get used-to, at all, but obviously, for an AR-user, the straight-in mag insertion and the similar thumb safety, and the magazine-release would be SUPER-similar to that to which you'd already be accustomed, as an AR-user. BOTH are excellent rifles.
I like the Scout version better than the SOCOM version, though it's a tiny bit longer. By the way, Magpul makes elongated ambi safety replacement modules for the SCAR, if the issue versions seem too stubby for folks with larger hands, etc.
Looks like 2 great weapons but I would take the M1A because of its proven record. I don't know how tight the tollerences are on the SCAR but most of the newer weapons seem to error on the aside of ttyo close of tollerences which doesn't end end wel for troops in dirty/ sandy environments. You could drop an M1 Garand in the mud and most likely it would still fire. I know that is not true for the M16. Thanks for the posting Hickok 45 You rock
josephl. Carson having shot both, and an owner of an M1A, the M1A definitely has tighter tolerances when comparing the two. the scar 17 almost feels like a toy when handling and manipulating it, and I will never be able to figure out how something so loosely put together is so accurate.
I know both those guns are great but my god that SOCOM16 is gorgeous.
I've been wanting one of these two for so long, love em both. I think it's gonna come down to my patience as to saving money. Great vid Hickok!
It makes sense the SCAR has less recoil, if you look at the way the bore lines up with the stock it's a straight line directly into your shoulder, on the M14 with a more traditional stock, the line of the bore is above the stock, that results in more kick and muzzle rise. Like that silly Rhino revolver they made where it fires from the bottom of the cylinder.
Compensators help with muzzle rise, which could help on terms of perceived recoil. Muzzle brakes are designed to use the gasses of the gun to help reduce recoil. If it's just a case of the muzzle rise causing the recoil to be unpleasant then porting or compensation should work in theory.
You're exactly right Connor, that's why competition handgun shooters run them. But if the recoil isn't causing muzzle rise it really wouldn't help. That's where knowing why the recoil is worse makes a difference in how you can combat it.
Scar-17=$3700 , SOCOM16 = $2200 , Hmmm ? O.K. I will go with the SOCOM 16 and purchase $1500 in ammo ,Thank You !
no substitute for experience. this man is a sage
He made this video 11 years ago but I’m still watching him in 2023. He’s kinda like the Bob Ross of guns.
I've always considered the .308 a refined 30.06. Not better per se. I love them both. Buddy has a socom 16 and it is a sweet shooter.
7.62 NATO is a refined 30.06. It was designed to perform like the original 30.06 did.
Thank you for sustaining my point. I agree.
Wolfe. 30.06 is a beast. Bruised my shoulder first couple times shooting. (Rem. 700)
I have a 1974 Sears Stevens made by Savage 30-06 tooled into a beautiful long range rifle but alas I prefer my Howa 1500 HCR 308. The cost of ammo is incredibly cheaper yet getting basically the same effect.
Scar is such a dream gun... :D
fal for evah🙋
Sad your dream gun is about as attractive as you are
Great video. Makes you really appreciate your new camera!
ive always loved the m1a and now i really want that socom16, very informative video thx.
M1A is just the simpler of the two weapons, and no polymer is a big plus.
That said, SCAR's are great battle rifles, but if I had to be left alone with 1000 rounds and one rifle, I'd choose the M1A/M14.
The M1A has a polymer stock just like the SCAR...
@@kevinmarrett9532 depends on your model. Mine is wood. Also the trigger guard on the scar is polymer. The M1A is metal.
Hickok is like a kid in a candy store when he sees this 2 liters. "ooo how about a 2 liter" lol
It's because they mock him. You can't let the enemy mock you. ;
I just enjoyed your video. Thanks for clearing my thinking on these amazing firearms......00TG from Illinois.....
ALWAYS AWESOME REVIEWS. THANK YOU.
I had a H&K 91 wish I would have never sold it
Scar is more practical but the socom definitely has a cool factor
Not to be negative Nancy, but nothings practical about a 4k gun. That's not even w/ an optic. But I do want one 😵💫
I reward myself after Homework by watching Hickok45 videos!
Always enjoy your vids especially when you do a strip down of the guns , not many gun channels do this . Keep up the exellent work of joy ...life is good..!
I'll take the Scout Squad any day thank you very much! Call me old school but with wood please, yeah I know. ;
Springfield all the way, yes the FN Scar is a nice piece, but in the end with the money saved buying the so com I can also buy ammo!
Excellent review! Thanks!
The system works. I have used a few times. I preferred it over the erb setup. Weight means nothing if you train with it.
I like them both - but without a doubt I would grab that Socom16.
The FN, it's not even a competition.
Like my old shop teacher Vernon Day! Thank you Sir!
The background forest sounds are terribly soothing while this man shoots those guns.
