Funny story about the weight issue. When the M16 first replaced the M14 and the BAR during the Vietnam era, some soldiers really hated the light weight because they couldn't think of them as real guns. I felt the same way when I first picked up a Glock on pistol range after years of firing 1911s. "What is this thing?"

Imagine dragging that 20 lb hunk of metal around a hill in Korea in -20 temps with a wind-chill of -40 to -70. No thanks. Although it's not like they really worked that well in those extreme temps anyhow. Most BAR guys went and found a Garand as they mostly continued to work. Everyone ditched their carbines early as they stopped working and wouldn't penetrate the thick insulation the Chinese had. The Chinese were using whale oil in their BARs and that kept theirs going. Although I think they just got lucky and that is what they always used in all climates.

For the same weight, you can carry the scar 17 along with a buncha extra mags, food, or batteries. The BAR's extra 12 pounds really adds up (feels worse) the longer you stay in the field. I think the FN scar is such a great innovative design in so many ways, I just wish they would have addressed a few more issues with the manual of arms such as: the bolt catch/release not being ambidextrous (would be nice if they had something similar to the ACR's bolt catch), the short fore-end/handguard (would prefer something longer, possibly in keymod), maybe an adjustable gas system, make it compatible with plentiful magazines(like the dpms AR10 mags), and a non-reciprocating charging handle.
If the rifle had those options I may actually consider owning a rifle in the less than affordable 7.62x51mm caliber.

Well, it's in some ways apples-to-oranges: the FN Mk17 was designed as a heavy assault rifle, while the BAR is an Infantry Automatic Rifle: a hybrid combat rifle/light machine gun. As a result, it's built to sustain high volumes of Fire for gunnery work, while retaining some semblance of precision. The Mk17, isn't quite built-up for heavy, prolonged stress.

      Son of a Zombie
Well then you could have said, "Compare the last 100 years of advancement to the 100 years previous to that." There might not have been as much development in the ammunition cartridge field, and the actions of firearms might be relatively the same, but the technology involved in manufacturing, recoil compensation, modularity, ergonomics, etc. has come quite far, and we owe these advancements to having such stable actions and designs from 100 years ago. It wasn't broken, so they didn't have to fix it, allowing the modern designers to focus on other aspects of shooting.

Don't get me wrong, I like video games and it's good that they're getting more people interested in firearms. A new gun owner and a supporter of gun rights is always good, irrespective of how they came to be firearms fans.

I love my SCAR 17s. Best battle rifle I have ever handled, and I have handled a lot! The BAR was a great weapon in its time, and it is a pretty good war club if you run out of ammo and are strong enough to swing it... LOL If you hate the SCAR, its probably because you have never fired a SCAR... They are light, accurate, have an OK trigger, good sights and surprisingly low recoil for a 7.62 NATO round. I can fire my SCAR at a 6" plate at 300+ yards at a rate of 3 to 4 rounds a second and hit the plate every time. Almost no muzzle rise. The muzzle break makes the weapon loud, you can feel the thump if you are standing next to someone firing it. Yes, it kind of looks like a pregnant guppy, but if the SHTF, that is the rifle I will have in my hands. You can really reach out and touch someone, in the next zip code if necessary, with the SCAR. I just don't know what else you could want in a combat rifle...

The book helmet for a pillow by Robert Lackie - an amazing book about the marines in the pacific. Describes how the marines modified the BAR for combat "if it could be taken off it was". Packs were used for shooting or logs in more static times. It was more DMR then people think because of the sights and trigger the book talks about being able to burst 2 or 3 rounds with it accurate.
