Not only are these two communities of Canton and Massillon known for starting professional football, but the two high schools of Canton McKinley and Massillon Washington are also known for modernizing the game of football for over more than a century after. The first playbook ever constructed was given out here. The first booster club ever was started here. The first live nationally televised high school game was filmed here. And since the 1960's, The Pro Football Hall of Fame is here.
A combined 36 Ohio state titles, 11 national titles, and 1,750 games won between the two makes them not only the two winningest programs in Ohio, but also puts them both in the top 10 for the nation. They have sent more players, coaches, and GM's to the NFL than ANY OTHER HIGH SCHOOL RIVALRY. They are without a doubt, the two most historic football programs in the country... and since 1894, they have produced the Greatest Football Rivalry in America.
Massillon (now 10-0) and McKinley (now 8-2) square-off on a cold and rainy Ohio afternoon as a crowd of nearly 18,000 watch the 129th Game. A back and forth game leads to a somewhat anti-climatic ending, but none the less- another great chapter is in the books.

Played against McKinley in 2002, we came in town from Rochester NY and played at the HoF field.. great memories
I remember seeing that name on past schedules and such. McKinley and Massillon always try to get out of state teams and bring them into the area. Unlike anything ever. You can check out "cantonmckinley.com" for past games and their stats!!!!!

LOL I dont hate Massillon!! Its a rivalry. Any hate comments are (hopefully) old. I try my best to remain unbiased. I "hate" Massillon in the same manner Ohio State hates Michigan or the entire NBA hates Golden State. History is history and McKinley would not be McKinley without Massillon, and vice versa. You have to have an appreciation for the rivalry, because there is no other two school rivalry that compares to this. We (Canton and Massillon) literally started professional football out of the hatred for each other.... and that is often overlooked and forgotten by people from other Stark schools. Outsiders looking in dont understand the feeling you get when both teams take the field. As for the MaxPreps article, I saw it as well. And theyre right. Its fun to give Massillon people sh*t for not winning a playoff title, but you cant deny the greatness of the Paul Brown era and some of the other years.
Im sure I'll be there... and Im sure it'll sting since it will be at Tom Benson.... but I am certainly one who will be rooting for Massillon to win the state title. Some things are just meant to happen.

But Nah 😂#1 rivalry goes to McKinley - Massillon. Not even close. Massillon stadium holds 20k. Canton Hall of Fame holds 24k. Our old one held 25. 😂 Valdosta is #1 in wins. ... But Massillon is at 4th and McKinley at 10th.
No rivalry has sent more players, coaches, and GMs to the NFL than McKinley and Massillon.

Cheers my man! Ignatius Eds has all the talent and coaching in the world. And even giant student sections... But the crowd just doesn't compare to McK-Mass.... But we are LUCKY.

Yes, it is true that Massillon has now won the last 8 of 9, but these kind of runs exist all over the course of the rivalry. Any numbers expert would tell you that McKinley is due for a run of their own. HOWEVER, don't forget... Every year that goes by is just another year that Massillon has failed to win a title. The past two seasons have seen Massillon's greatest teams ever possibly, and you guys have barely squeaked by McKinley.
The McKinley '97 state (and national) title team had no issues beating Massillon and they beat Ignatius twice.

JimTrussell I know man it’s the biggest high rivalry and part of that is messing with the other side I know it’s a great rivalry and I have been a tiger my whole life I play football as a tiger today and playing McKinley is just so exciting and there’s no other rivalry like it. I respect McKinley but if I’m being honest Massillon just wants it more every year. Since us tigers were little we were trained just to beat McKinley and that’s what we do best.

Yup! Im not sure what the second TD youre speaking of, but yes the one where he was called out was undeserved. However, the very next play McK threw a pic and Massillon scored on that drive, so Im glad that that didnt change the game. For such a cold and rainy afternoon, it was a tremendous game to watch.
