I watch Merdeka PNB 118 everyday on the way to work. Never failed to amaze me even for a single second. It was located right next to the Stadium Merdeka, where our first PM made official declaration of independence.

The PNB 118 MERDEKA TOWER is the most under-reported and least talked about new buildings...it is massive and soo different with its striking angles of 100% sheer glass. Plus it will overtake the Shanghai Tower as second tallest is a huge achievement..and to all the workers in that major suck humidity and heat..I give a huge shout out to these Laboring construction workers...and when its done , along side the twin Petronas towers, and the newly finished TRK tower which is the highest in KL now until the Merdeka is done. GO MALAYSIA.!!
It’s a spire, the spire will overtake it. Too many proud Malaysians here. Cool design, but not the second tallest.

When it comes to KL's Merdeka 118, I understand the sentiment regarding the over 100 meters spire. Here are the explanation...
Actually "Merdeka" means independent.
Back in 1957, at historical Merdeka Stadium next to the tower, Malaysia's first prime minister, "Tunku Abdul Rahman" chanting "Merdeka" 7 times. He raised his right arm almost 180 degree during independent declaration from the British empire.
This image is sentimental to Malaysian history.
Thus the Merdeka tower simply replicate the famous Tunku's standing posture, and the spire replicate his hand raise up to the air while chanting "Merdeka"
Still, even though it's a reasonable justification. I humbly believe that it's also benefit the tower in term of the height. Thus the owner, PNB probably intent that the spire will somehow help the tower to a good ranking when it comes to height.

The one in Malaysia looks beautiful! I thought the one in Dubai (Dubai creek tower) is the tallest one under construction in Asia (Surpassing burj khalifa) but at the same time many people said that it isn’t considered a skyscraper... But never the less great content keep it up !
It sure is. The design was transpired by the shape of our former first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, announcing 'Merdeka' in 1957 at the stadium right next door of PNB 118 with his right hand straight up (Merdeka means Independence in English).

The Australia 108 wont be tallest for long, as the “Green Spine” project has been approved for construction which will be tallest in Australia.
… assuming it really gets built. But thanks, I didn't know about that one-it would be another attractive addition to the Melbourne skyline. Whatever you think of the increase in Melbourne's density, it seems to have a higher ornamental standard for its skyscrapers than most cities.

@@Forlfir yes we do. While it might depend on how old you want to call historical, we still have buildings from Victorian and pre-victorian times.
Kieran Morris yeah its subjective i guess, in my country we have a bunch of historical buildings but they are mostly no older than 150 years, like most were built in the 1900s and following years. But we don’t really have that many colonial buildings, mostly churches and not more than 10 colonial houses (10 is a high guess tbh) but well the economic and population boom here was in the beginning of the 20th century you cant spect much from a country with not even a million people (its a quite big country, and most people lived in rural areas)

There are a bunch of proposed towers... Kuwait also has one over 1000m slated to start construction at the same time as Tower M is - but I am highly doubtful either of them will happen

I've lived in a small town my whole life where the tallest building is two stories (three if you count the basement). And not traveling to large cities hardly at all, seeing the height of these buildings is extraordinary.

There is actually another tower still under construction in Malaysia beside PNB 118, its The Exchange 106 Tower. Well, the height is the same as Twin Tower Petronas.

the 106 is done and tenants are ready to move in :) the whole parcel/neighbourhood is still being developed though.

I visit Dublin in March. Man oh man was I impressed. I believe I counted ~70 construction cranes from the bar on top of the Guinness storehouse. Dublin is among the few metropolitan areas outside of the US that I'd seriously consider living & working. Plus, the Irish people are just great. I noticed virtually zero honking from traffic, something literally unheard of in NYC/Chicago.
