- 3-18-2021: We start off our 5 day adventure up the Vermillion cliffs and into White Pocket. We were blessed with damp, hard packed sand! This made the drive quite easy, but how did the exit drive turn out? Watch this video to find out!

I love the variety of vehicles in your group, it’s a fantastic way to see side by side comparisons. Thanks for sharing.
I love the diverse group as well! I’m so excited to share the Alstrom point and Moab episodes. This video didn’t have too much to offer to be honest. I made my best effort, but I lacked a lot of content because my Go Pro didn’t transfer the files correctly 😭. It’s been 2 weeks since my last episode, and I have to make the CZcams Algorithm Gods happy by releasing on a consistent basis.
Man, Utah is so beautiful...iam constantly at awe at how many places to see and explore in that state. Great video Jon!
Utah is absolutely, my favorite state to visit! Next two episodes featuring Alstrom point and Moab are in the great state of Utah. Such an incredibly beautiful place! The Alpine lakes off highway 395 are pretty amazing too! That’s where Cali has Utah beat. More beautiful water.
Awesome video man...Can't wait to see more!
Thanks Lee! I’m excited to show you all Alstrom point and Moab Utah
That campsite was so rad! Also loved the little projector setup, super fun.
I love the vehicle comparisons here. What a great trip!!
Props to that fully stock subi tho out on an adventure being fully stock wow
I’m so far down the rabbit hole, I forgot how much of a difference even taller all-terrain tires make. More sidewall = the ability to air down safely. That would have made a difference. Man, I sure don’t miss the CVT tho 🤣
Lmao. Rip cvt.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770
It still made it is all I’m saying I wouldn’t take my fully stock vehicle out like that tho
@@pnw_element9822 the Stock Subaru was friends with the guy with the built Lexus GX. I’m sure he talked him into it 🤣. He was there to help him when times got rough.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring
Hahah i totally understand I have a friend with a Land Rover disco 2 when ever i go in the element I just lifted her 3 inches on all terrain tires too love ya video and I learn a lot from u when u always say need momentum to get going that’s how my element is I still made it to the top of browns camps here in Oregon
Great adventures, destinations and company!
Yes it was Moodz!!!!
Stayed there a few years back, what an awesome campsite!
Great vid Jon! That sand can take anyone down, looked super loose and fun!
It’s a noob killer! Haha! Just kidding @daklakfoto 🤣
Thank you for sharing, just cancelled my trip to white pocket. My Murano will definitely stuck, haha!!! cool video!!!
🔥🔥🔥 as always! super 🔥 content! great job jon! 🤙
Thank you 🙏
Another great off-road video.
Thank you Spaceentity!
Sweet Trip! We’ve taken inspiration and will recreate that heated movie theater on the lost coast this weekend.
Ah! I’ve always wanted to visit the lost coast! That’s on my bucket list! Any details? Do I need a permit? I’ll try to look into it, but it would be great to hear how your experience was after your trip. Have fun out there! Don’t get swallowed by the ocean 🌊 I heard about what the high tides can do 😱
So adorable to see Toyotas, subies, and Hondas over their head.
Yet such a breath of fresh air. So boring seeing nothing but jeeps everywhere. It's more fun to play on hard mode and build your driver skills, than to let a machine any steering-wheel-holder can drive, do all the work.
Very beautiful area. I wish I had my burb there. I feel my burb would be good. Great video again jon.
Your Suburban would have no issues. There was a guy with a newer Tahoe with BFG KO2s. He was concerned about entering the sandy section, but I told him he was more than capable. Which was the truth 😃
Very true. I think the chevys have rhe good balance of clearance, weight and the right kind of power. You rig did so good. Not a prob. You really built yours up right
Great video! I have been wanting to plan a trip to White Pocket for some but did not have a vehicle that could probably make it and not quite sure on road conditions so your video helped a lot. I just recently bought a 2018 Subaru Forester XT. I have stock tires and was wondering if you can recommend an all terrain tire that that would fit without lifting it for light off-road and sand close to stock size. Thanks
Do not do it is a Subie
We just did this trip a couple of days ago in an Outback Onyx XT. There had been a lot of rain, (enough to trip people in slot canyons and require rescue). House Rock road had multiple sloppy mud pits and miles of muddy ruts. That was the main challenge. The road to White Pocket itself was a piece of cake. We did have our Falken Wildpeaks aired down to 20. Great trip though! A local BLM guy thought this is likely to go to a permit/lottery system like the Wave, so if you have a chance to go, you might not want to wait too long
Thanks for the heads up Mark 🙏
@@JonDZ_Adventuring I think it was more a prediction than him knowing about something in the works, but I wouldn't be surprised.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring There are a LOT more areas to the NE of White Pocket, but few with rock structures to cut the wind for camping.
Just ran across your channel, good stuff!
The passport was great in the Utah soft sand. It felt like skiing on new powder. Floating, but with good control.
Yeah, I’m surprised how well the passport does in soft sand. I drove through deeper sand in Anza Borrego at 42 PSI, no issues. In my 2015 FXT, If I wasn’t at 15 PSI, I was getting stuck
Good Video. I have one question. Is it possible to drive the GMC YUKON 4x4 on the sand road to White Pocket?
Thanks! Yes, but use caution and air down your tires to Atleast 20 PSI. Be careful of the rocks that can be lurking underneath the sand. If it’s too muddy, things can be impassable for anything. A 4WD GMC Yukon with the right tires and air down should be very capable of traversing this terrain.
Okay question I have a brand new Subaru cross trek sport would this be fine on the trail ?
Definitely not.
Bugs Bug at White Pocket! 😛
The only good bug, is a dead bug!
Question, if aired down to say 20 psi did anyone have any problems with the sand? I never drive on sand at street pressure.
Everyone was aired down here
Just got back from here. The wet year must have made for a much easier sand. We were aired down to 20 and sauntered up that hill. I even stopped at that first tree to take some video and got going again. I got a ton of sand driving confidence this trip. I don't do a ton of it.
is your passport lifted a lil? i got a pilot elite awd 23. seems a lil lower than the previous gen. but i also have factory 20s so this spot might be a nogo. especially solo with the wife and kid. noob to 4 wheel off road but i do dirtbike so i get the concept of momentum and stopping once your spinning so you don't dig up more obstacles for yourself after you reset.
Yes, in this video I have the Traxda 3.5" lift kit and 18" wheels and All Terrain tires. The iVTM4 Hondas are on a willing platform. I'd stay away from mud though.
Thank you for the video! Do you think a high clearance 2 wheel drive SUV can handle the sand road over there?
You’re very welcome! The sand get quite deep in some places. I don’t think it’s a matter of high clearance, it’s just a matter of traction. If you have a rear locker, you’d be fine in 2WD. A LSD would be a maybe, but I would really be concerned about regular 2WD. The problem with this trail is that it’s remote and lightly traveled.
Rent a 4WD in Kanab if you don't have 4WD or AWD
Took my wrx here and it was a dumb decision. However, the whole way to where I got stuck all winter night was stunningly gorgeous. Plus this was the place where I propose my wife, so no regret at all
You got stuck so had to get married? Great story!
So it looks like the main trail is pretty easy? Its just the off-shoot trail y'all took to camp was hard?
I think we just got lucky with damp sand. It will probably be more challenging with dry soft sand.
Yes, the end part was definitely deeper, but at the time, still a little damp. There’s a sign warning of deep sand.
How did you get your rear hatch to be manual like that and not pop back open when you set up your awning?
After it fully opens, you can manually pull it down.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Mine still tries to pop back up. Is there a setting in the Infotainment for that, maybe?
@@seandenney5780 there’s no setting that I know of. Maybe mines just dirty and worn out 🤣
Would a dually 4x4 pickup have more or less problem in the deep sand??
More tire, I’d imagine less issues. Always a good idea to air down for soft sand.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Thanks! and easier with less load in the truck bed than with heavier??
"Godzilla's Ballsack". Hahaha
5:24 Where did you go?
The mask worked! But now on Amazon!
Airing down your tires is not as helpful when they are located on huge bling rims and are relatively low volume low profile. Crossovers that advertise softroadyness need to offer smaller wheels and more air down AT capability. It's no accident that despite the platform it is usually the people driving on low profile tires that seem to get stuck or not make it up without a lot of speed. Unfortunately lots of the newer crossovers, from many brands, do not allow fitment of smaller wheels. A huge mistake. Subaru is one of them. Some of the older Subaru's and various models can be fitted with 15's for instance. But even their new WILDERNESS edition cannot go smaller than the 17 inch wheels it comes with. The only way you can get a taller sidewall is to go larger tire, and the wheel wells limit you there. Then again the Wilderness has JUST ENOUGH on 17's vs 18's on many other models where there is at least enough volume for an air down to make a difference. It could just be a much larger game changing difference on much smaller wheels. Not picking on Subarus, just using them as an example I am more familiar with. The newer models seem to have bigger brake systems, that are not easily covered by smaller wheel choices. Just some random thoughts about my pet peeve.. Databyter
Great video! What's wrong with that GX? The engine sounds a little rough...
I’ve been telling people he got an LS engine swap, as a joke 🤣. But it really has an issue with the catalytic converter.
Great LS swap that is all. :) with the cracked cat converter :)
Oh ok! I was a little worried cause I recently got a GX 460. Worried I made a mistake 😵😵
@@deepseafisher34 that’s a good vehicle. Has the Aisin 6 speed (one more gear than the older 470). You also have beefed up brakes and a 4 pinion 8.2” rear differential. It’s tougher than the 470 😃
Would that camo work well for alligators? Great vid and congrats on the Honda podcast!
That’s exactly why I wrapped my Honda that color, to blend in with the gators 🐊, haha!
Oh! The face camo! Welp, I can send you one and you can tell me if it works 😃
@@JonDZ_Adventuring lol thanks for the offer, but you don’t need to do that :)
I lifted our Jeep Liberty do deal with 2-track sand driving.
ive lost hope on the wave and this is probably the best alternative how hard was the drive? i heard its loose sand
U think an 09 Jeep Patriot could do this??
When we did the trail, the sand was moist, which made getting through easier. I have heard of vehicles becoming stuck here, so I can’t say if a Jeep patriot would make it or not. Airing down the tires to 15 psi would be helpful, and going with a 2nd vehicle with recovery gear would be wise.
Great episode! WTG Sandra...that SH is a beast!
One hell of a driver behind the wheel too!
Haha thanks guys.
Do you think a 2021 Rav4 will do good?
Whats the distance of loose sand Thank you
For sand, you should air down to avoid getting stuck, but at the same time, you don’t want to get a “pinch flat”. This is when you hit a hard surface so hard that the bottom of your tire makes contact with your wheel and it rips open your sidewall. I did a quick search on the Rav4 and I show that they come with 17, 18 and 19 inch wheels. The smaller the wheel and taller the tire the better. You want more tire sidewall. I DO NOT recommend you air down if your Rav4 has a 19 inch wheel, and if you can’t properly air down I don’t recommend you go through deep sand by yourself.
I saw that one of the crossover cars couldn’t make it op the hill, and then it got stock again is that the worse spot of loose sand? I really appreciate the feedback
@@nunezarnie yes, there was a warning sign that said “very deep sand”. If you are going there alone it would be a good idea to avoid that spot. It just leads to the place we camped and that cave. It wouldn’t be a very long hike.
NO! RAV4 is the wrong car for this, you will break it or get stuck unless your skill level can compensate
nice
Too bad i wasn't able to come man!
Hope to see you for the Mojave road!
You do not need to air down for sand, is my experience in my Jeep Liberty w/ 2.5" lift.
More Passport, please...
More Xterras please
The blue forester kept using their brakes. 15:00
He hit the brake after he wasn’t making any progress. Then seconds later he hits the brakes after a longer try. Curious, what do you think Would have happened if he didn’t hit the brake?
The narrator keeps calling this "wheeling" which is quite a stretch
How could this even be a struggle? 🤣
Toyotas, Subies and Hondas, oh my!
Exactly, true 4WD with non CVT, 4WD low, high hp, high profile all terrain tires, aired down to 20 psi is the right equipment for this type of road.
Like the Lexus GX 😉 that had to take multiple attempts? In deep sand, knowing how much momentum to use makes a big difference.
Hope you are ok after the accident!
Oh, I feel terrible about the April Fools joke. I'm a goof ball so I couldn't resist. Thanks for stopping by to leave a comment.
Dick... 😂 🤣. First got me with your friends broken rear diff... Now this.
Low range stops excessive wheel spin (digging holes)
Blue Forester needs lessons
It's the skinny pedal on the right. 🙄 ..and turn OFF the traction control.
You don’t really need the music when you talk at the start, really distracting
Thanks for the feedback. I thought it was a good idea at the time, but I can see how the percussions could be distracting.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring cool no worries we enjoy the show Tnx we just want to hear your lovely voice better
@@dimitristsagdis7340 haha! Thanks!
The Subaru driver was excruciatingly angering to watch. They shouldn’t be on a trail with zero experience or ability to learn. Repeated the same mistakes over and over. That’s how people get hurt.
He definitely shouldn’t be on a trail with zero experience while “ALONE”, but he was here with us that could help him out if he got into trouble. The best environment to struggle and learn is with friends around. We all have to start somewhere.
Also to be be fair, he might have been trying to reduce speed to avoid accidental undercarriage damage due to inexperience, not sure
The vehicle was capable of doing it better and slower. Unfortunately he had stock wheels and tires. I believe that year would allow for 15's or 16's and taller profile tires that are fantastic on light vehicles like that aired down. But if you have low profile tires and no air volume, you are ice skating. Starting slow is never angering to watch. Reckless would be starting too fast when it's not necessary.. It's easy to judge from behind the keyboard. databyter
