Great video sir. Well done. +1
welcome @TalladegaTom !
Bro what a great well thought out video!! Impressive🤙🤙
Well I'm actually hoping Rinus van Kalmthout starting at 4th (VeeKay as you guys call him) will do well in the race. Half of his helmet is painted in his design, the other half in Arie van Luijendijk's design from pretty long ago. But I'm Dutch too so don't blame me for rooting for him 😜
i'm from the future. no
Big shout for mentioning Mansell as the only person who has been F1 and Indycar world champion at the same time.
This may never be repeated again
@@DidierPeroni I agree with that D.. 👍
This right here! One of the few underrated achievements in Motorsport history to champion and master the two most difficult forms of open wheel racing. I hope and pray with Indycars 100 plus year history and frankly the same for Grand Prix Racing (F1) These crossover and masters of open wheel racing are more recognized.
While a great achievment. Mansell had the fortune of having the best car in both series
@@erikgreen9769 Hey Erik, i absolutely agree with you. They may look similar, but F1 and Indycar are very different disciplines. To be world camp in both at the same time (if only briefly) is an incredible achievement...peace to ya.
My question is though, why doesn’t Montoya go to Toyota and ask for a Le Man drive??? He’s got 2 out of 3 triple crown races.🤷♂️
dude.. i don't get it. He could probably get a drive, too. He's been in the seat. I would LOVE to see his go at 24 again
He’s also probably got 2 of 3 most difficult to get. Whereas Le Man got to be in Toyota seat or before that a Porsche seat to have a chance to win.
@@CYMotorsport For some reason he doesn't seem to care about the triple crown. He's had the 2 hardest ones for 17 years. He could've probably get a seat with the best Lemans team if he would've tried. We won 24 of Daytona several times, but only went to Lemans once and didn't race the premier class. He's 45 now so, maybe Toyota would put him in a seat as a third driver, but doubtful.
He might give it a shot when acura can join when imsa and lemas rules are the same
Difficult cuz as right now he's a factory Honda(Acura) until the end of tjus year
I find what Mario did to be more impressive then the triple crown. Daytona, Indy, F1 Championship, Pikes Peak win.
Two ovals and 3 domestic races. Objectively that can’t be more globally impressive but it’s absolutely an incredible feat
Aj foyt... Daytona. Indy, 24 gour of Daytona and lemas.... and he could beat all thier ases 🤣
Fernando Alonso- Tries to win the triple crown
*Laughs in Chevy*
You felon! don't jinx it haha hopefully this comment ages well
“I love your sense of humor”
Kinda hilarious considering what took him out two years ago was having a Honda.
Skasaha Haha I didn’t even think about that
@Aussie Cockatoo No, no it isn't. Because of it was so, nobody would have won the Triple Crown. Hill won Indy 500 in 1966 and Le Mans in 1972, and won Monaco multiple times over differnt years.
So get your facts straigt, hit thanks for incorrecting us.
I want Kimi, Hamilton and Verstappen to try for it aswell... some day! ;)
Kimi always had a shot at tripling in my book I wish he pursued it more. I mean he still may, Emmerson nearly did!
I think Hamilton has passed. Something about it bring dangerous, but I can’t remember his precise words.
kimi seems like a good candidate
@@michaelx4810 I also distinctly remember Hamilton saying something about the level of competition being lower in IndyCar after Alonso went in 2017.
I doubt Kimi would do it although I never expected him to try NASCAR. Lando Norris I think is the best chance of another F1 driver coming to Indy after Alonso
Alonso is an ATTRACTION for the Indy 500, not a distraction. Same for drivers that did "The Double".
I mean the only reason I've watched it in years was because Alonso was racing
@@tipsyMJT I hope you stay dude. Indy definitely had a massive slump in the 00’ and early teens but it’s coming back up.
Mario Andretti is an American legend. And I'm not even American.
@Chris A That's very cool. And very rightly.
I think on most lists he’s ranked as the greatest American race car driver. And I absolutely agree.
There are a lot of old drivers that have said that his twin brother Aldo was faster.
And neither is Mario really... He was born in Croatia(well, it was Italy when he was born. Croatia now)
@Lord Mahaveer Maldonado Yes and he started racing here in the States.
“There’s always a chance”Shows lloyds face from dumb and dumber. That was a deep cut lol. That was a good one
😂glad someone noticed haha
Should have waited a day to make this to talk about Sato getting that double victory
Most people don’t even know him haha. It was worth the risk on being right plus it can double as being less about Indy and more non - traditional routes to F1. I didn’t mean to be so thorough but it’s how it normally goes haha
Thanks for mentioning Peter Revson. He was my favorite driver at the time. I quit watching F1 in 1974 because of his death at Kyalami. Starting with Jim Clark (the GOAT), most of my favorite drivers, and others, had been killed. Stewart and Fittipaldi made it out alive, at least. I started watching F1 again the year after they switched to those god-awful "power units." Bring back the V-10's, or even the V-8's. Thanks for the great video and GO Fernando!
I don't think it'll ever happen but I'd love to see Lewis Hamilton take on the Indy 500 someday.
not a snowballs chance in hell but I agree haha
I think he would commit to the entire season rather than a one off. Maximum preparation. But only after f1. Also, he would be bloody expensive (though sponsorship will follow him)
@@TheTororist He would struggle alot. I think Kimi would do better in Indycar than Lewis would. Lewis is too soft for indycar. He would need to bulk up and start really working out just to be able to last the race. But his biggest issue would be the competition. Coming from having a car that's a full .7 tenths faster than the next closest team in F1 for 5 years to going to an equal playing field would really mess with his confidence.
I'm continually surprised and pleased by how well researched and neutrally reported your videos are. Keep up the good work.
the long game! much more coming
Again, another great video Cranky Yankee.
Your ability to summarize practically the entire history of the Indy 500
so eloquently and grasp for spoken word is masterful.
I appreciate that! just doing what I love - thanks for the support it means a lot
I think a better way of saying it is, "Formula 1 Drivers do not do well in IndyCar, until they become IndyCar drivers."
Maybe some Indy 500, and IndyCar Champions, came through the ladder of F1. Or maybe they were accomplished in some respect in F1, Champion or also-ran. But it's not until they dedicate to IndyCar that, in the modern era, they can mount a legitimate shot at winning.
It would depend on your interpretation of what a successful career is. The data would suggest their earlier years after the transition were best. There’s a high density of f1 drivers with multi win seasons as a percent of total. But the whole video has sub narratives as to why it’s never been why F1 drivers are this or that. Bc what the hell is “an F1 driver” ? As we’ve seen, it’s literally just a mix of luck , exposure, sponsors, and skill. Many drivers went through the ladder. And if they did, they were fairly good at any level. F1 has a massive power hierarchy of course in car performance but they weren’t steamrolled for the most part. Minus Andretti and Sullivan haha
Looks like "GP2 engine" killed Alonso's triple crown hopes.
damn they really did. what an omen to enter the grid back on
If he had lived longer I'm sure JIm Clark would have set many more records and be considered the greatest racing driver of all time, However I'm giving that honor to Mario who's won in just about every category of 4 wheel racing and has managed to survive
If wins is your measure, mate have a look at fangios record haha it’s absurd. F1 only came about in his 40s. He had been destroying everyone for years prior. Across multiple regulations and formula, too
@@CYMotorsport Well Fangio must be the toughest driver of all time - when you read about what he did in those multi-day South American races in the 40s - amazing.
Here's Graham Hill discussing three of the greats in Sports Illustrated after Jimmy's death 'Comparing him with champions of other eras is terribly difficult, but surely this is true: in their respective times Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss and Jim Clark were the greatest drivers. Fangio was just that fraction of a second quicker in a Grand Prix car than Moss. Moss was a better all-rounder for any type of racing. Then we look at Jimmy's record. He has won more Grand Prix races than any other driver; you just can't refute that. He did it all with the same car-with Lotus-and this combination of Colin Chapman the constructor and Jim Clark the driver was very strong. You've just got to take the two together, because Chapman designed the cars, and it was a parallel success story.'
Lol fangio> andretti....
Yiss. The crossover I wanna see, Cranky and Slap.
He’s a beast! It’s gotta be the right story, but when I find it, he’ll be the first from another open wheel channel I seriously work with
Definitely staying subscribed. Best motorsport content that I have seen on CZcams
trying to keep you guessing! thanks for the support
The cool thing about indy is that you get lot of background of racing in the same day, guys from Indycar itself former f1 endurance, Nascar.
The same race
Great vid
man, I always love when I see your vids pop up
I've never actually watched an indy 500 hundred race before. if I can find out where to stream it tomorrow Ill be joining in to cheer the man on! thanks for the inspiration and for another great video!
I tried building a little data screen to stream last second... yeah def didn't work haha enjoy the race!
As always outstanding work nick
Outstanding presentation!!! Nick you attract many knowledgeable commenters with this post congratulations.
I don’t have anything of value to add. Great job once again- love seeing this well researched long-form stuff from you man.
Thanks! It’s a slow grind and sometimes I wonder if it’s worth it but staying firm the course!
USAC is usually pronounced like “you-sack” so I was very confused when you simply said the letters haha
yeah I went back and forth but ultimately figured I'd get more shit if I went you sack haha I have to weigh my choices in the amount of hate email and comments I get sadly haha
@Andrew Steward you're the kid who left the other comment saying there's tons of incorrect information but didn't have the balls to time stamp. stop whining and move on or put your money where your mouth is and cite the specific examples. please leave it on your original comment I can't keep track of your manic commenting all over my video.

Your content is fantastic and timely! Thanks!!
wanted to post pretty close to the race this time. we'll see if it pays off haha risky gamble but I hope the video has legs beyond the Indy 500 - I wrote it to last anyway
I love all of these videos with the music, the drama, the truths and, of course the storys that are unfolding right here and right now
Also HUGE fan of how all the motor sport guys are doing these link ups and asking for opinions. Weather it be you, josh or, tomo. Strongest community on CZcams
I'm so glad to hear! I'm lucky to be connected with those lads. it's a good time meandering through this together. we all kind of bring out the best in eachother for the benefit of F1 fans
I know this isn't the main point of the video but I hold firm in believing that Jim Clark is the greatest racing driver ever, from any motorsport, of any era.
Not named AJ Foyt or Mario Andretti, absolutely
CrankyYankee leading the F1 charge in the US. Love that you’re here and run an F1 channel, the sport seems like it is flourishing in the US right now, thanks to the Netflix series and COVID hurting MLB and NBA seasons (imo). More of my friends are watching and I’m seeing F1 on TV here in NYC ...amazing!
got your back david!
Liberty have done a great job of making the sport accessible to new fans...
Awesome video. Well done!
SOO MUCH INFORMATION.... wow! What a video. Loved it!! :D
very hard to wrangle it all into a clean story but it came together! glad you enjoyed Stijn!
Thank you for making this content. I’m not a huge fan of watching races but I love the engineering, people and personalities that make great cars/teams. The stories you tell have kept me entertained for hours and have given me even more reverence for the sport. Goddamn legend.
Mate I've always wanted a video about this and now I get one from you. Brilliant.
it was painful haha but a fun little turnaround. it doesn't have legs unfortunately but I wanted to research it so win win
You know what I want to see? Someone who wins all 3 Memorial Day races. That seems so much more impossible. Considering it requires a Super License with winning at a track where passing is impossible, qualifying for the Indycar race with the most likely not to make it, and winning the most Greuling NASCAR race of them all. Do all that, and you are a motorsports legend undisputedly in my book.
In theory it'd be easiest for an IndyCar driver since they are experienced in street racing and ovals.
Plus quite a few IndyCar drivers have a super license while ko Nascar driver does except I think Harvick and Busch.
Thank you for the excellent video. Stay safe.
Always very informative. Thank you!!
no probs JT!
Nice! I wake up on a Saturday morning and have a coffee and a new Cranky Yankee video! 👍
Nick man your videos keep getting better and better every upload, keep up the hard work dude 👍
thanks Aylín :) I'm excited to keep pushing
Something new content!!! I actually had this doubt from long long time!!
Loved your channel for this type of contents really great job keep doing this😍
I really struggled to put it into words why it's not such a simple question so it ended up being 24/7 writing for nearly a week haha got a 50 minute down to this as best as I could. but essentially it boils down to Indy fans forgetting the drivers coming over are either criminally underrated in F1 (Rossi, Revell, Fabi, Sato, etc) or champions already. Conversely, F1 fans egregiously misunderstand oval racing - especially the danger involved with the Indy 500.
@@CYMotorsport I can actually see the hard work because content is flawless! As you already said I never ever understood the danger in oval racing and also underestimate that till today!!
Incredible video. Fantastic research and production.
Still one of my favorite videos by far. Just not terribly popular haha
Another awesome video
Excellent video, really informative
Well Done as always this video connects with one of your first video's do Americans have what it takes to be in Formula 1 well done keep up the good work.
Thanks Paul! This was def more of a nod to that video. Kinda crazy when you go back and listen to how cringe that is - the set up, the pace, the objective, the narrative - just how much I've found ways to make them better. I would go back and redo that one but I want to leave it up there for the sake of benchmarking improvements haha
It's sad what happened to Indy car in the 90's. I am from North America so it was always easier to watch their races than F1 (although a die hard F1 fan) . Indy was as good for a while but when the split happened I kind of just stopped watching and only watched F1. Although not the triple crown there are still only a few who have won the 500 and both championships -no small accomplishment!!
Losing mansell and Jacques were gutting for sure
Colin Chapman and thus Jimmy Clark came to America and the Indy 500 for the reason that it paid a ton of money to win. F1 in those days was not the billion dollar industry it is today.
jackie admitted as much as well
Learned something new today 👍🏾
Mansell is the only driver which stands out for me, he is the definition of true grit, when he gets behind the wheel, there is only one position he is interested in at any price. As for the 500 I have never understood its significance.....but I appreciate its popularity.
Super super super old. Rally and the Indy 500 are the oldest. Indy is crazy bc it’s 200 laps. Getting any set up to make it that long is highly impressive
Best F1 documentary channel.
Glad you enjoy them Jake :)
Alonso's Indy Car career proves to me one thing. No matter how great the driver, he is nothing without an equally good racecar. If Alonso gets a good car, he has more than enough talent to win.
That's the same for literally every form of motor racing..
Great video 👍🏼
Love the vids keep it up
you got it!
22:39 oof such an unfortunate jinx - joke aside, well done video. I always find videos like that fascinating. More so that it's an original racing subject that hasn't been touched in greater detail.
damn damn damn I didn't even think about that jinx haha. balanced it out with a sato anti jinx haha. Sorry alex!
I didn’t plan to watch the Indy 500 this year but this video had convinced me otherwise, cheers!
I am a simple man, I see Clark I click like
I need to talk about him more. He’s got one of the more interesting careers in my book
@@CYMotorsport yeah, I saw a documentary about him called "the quiet champion". Beautiful stuff.
He was rumored to have been considering retirement when he died though I doubt it. He would surely have raced Le Mans and won a few more F1 titles . I don’t talk about my all time best drivers but working on that for my 100k special. Jimmy as of now is my undisputed number 1. Gonna be a pain the ass to finish this beast of a video but I’m stoked for it
@@CYMotorsport He is my absolute GOAT too.
So excited for Indy 500 👍
This video put a smile on my face, I love seeing IndyCar and Formula 1 cross over
Doesn’t happen much. I’d do more if people care but they don’t. Indyfanatics and I have some stuff planned but we gotta find more interest first. I hope we do JPMs and that era crossover
@@CYMotorsport indycar is hopefully still growing since the fateful split. Keep up the incredible content man, you are truly a professional
Kurt Busch did amazing along with Tony Stewart. No F1 ties but both have done plenty of racing in different series.
I'm surprised Stewart & Gordon actually never took a test more seriously. I guess at that point, no need but for sure they could have
@@CYMotorsport Actually Gordon was about to race in open wheel cars, he got inspired by Mario Andretti and Aj Foyt footsteps what they were doing at the time with their achievements but Gordon took a deal at stock car racing that made him forgotten it but If Gordon choose open wheel race It would be another story to tell.
Oval racing is a completely different beast
yeah man it really is
Daniel Cook . . . I recall several decades ago when Roger Penske was considering a F1 driver for a part-time drive for the Indy Cars, mainly for the Indy 500, that one particular driver of prominence was given a test on a road course and not on an oval; mainly out of concerns Penske had of that driver, being unfamiliar with ovals, with crashing the car.
With the monies that can be made in F1 nowadays, I can understand why F1 drivers would not consider racing at Indy . . . the high speeds and the lack of run-off areas towards the race course barriers would be high on the list.
10:53 that turbo..lol...so cool
Indy car is 20 times more interesting than F1 right now.
I don’t know about 20 but I def could see how it’s more unexpected. The 500 was good to me despite ppl complaining
@@CYMotorsport 100% agree and ok haha it's about 2.5x better at the moment.
I buy that. Maybe more haha I saw the controversy and how pissed Rossi is now after his unsafe release penalty
I'm not a big fan of ovals outside Indianapolis but Road America double header was great racing. So was Indianapolis road course.
I'm a sucker for the street and road courses but fully appreciate the high difficulty of the oval.
@Chetster Callahan . . . was makes open-wheel racing nowadays seemingly mundane is the lack of suspense when it comes to the race car's reliability. Nowadays the cars are nearly bulletproof; whereas in earlier decades, races were decided upon how well the car & drivetrain would hold up. Materials used for engines and cars didn't hold up well in earlier eras of racing, where factors of blown engines, missed shifts, failed clutches, malfunctioning transmissions, ignition failures, electrical problems, flat-tires, collapsed suspensions, and a host of additional items, prone to breakage, really made for suspenseful racing; as the driver/car leading the race, in the late stages, had no assurances of winning the race until the checkered flag.
Nowadays, race cars are so utterly reliable that it has taken a portion of suspense out of the race for the spectators; making it for me, fairly mundane to watch on TV.
Some drivers never succeeded in F1 but succeeded in Indycar. Some never had a chance to race in F1. Takuma Sato was only a midfield driver when he was in F1, now he has won 2 Indy 500s
As always great video. For real, sorry I don't know more people that are into this stuff to share it with lol
That’s alright mate I’m glad you find it interesting
JPM is gonna win the triple crown before Fernando.
He took care of the 2 hardest ones first.
Of course, he's probably never even gonna get a ride at Le Mans.
Also, it doesn't seem like JPM even cares about it. He's just happy to race.
yeah weirdly enough I would say le mans is the easiest haha sounds so weird typing. factory plus good teammates plus a bit of luck
@@CYMotorsport I've seen him racing at 12hrs of Sebring, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility for him to get a LeMans ride.
Hey loved the video just like always well informed and entertaining... unless you’ve aldready made a video on it, why don’t you cover the different technical regulation changes over the years and how they may have started and ended a team’s domination.
Been on the list a while now ! def a good one. just really, REALLY REALLY hard haha good suggestion though!
CrankyYankeeF1 ye I understand it’s hard I can only imagine the time and effort that goes into these videos, just know whatever vids you make I’ll watch them
Love it keep it up:). now i have a question do you think f1 can return to Watkins glen and do you like indycar as a f1 fan (and if you do can you do indycar drivers in f1)
There have been a lot of indycar driver's that do well in F1 as well
I came here after Romain Grosjean announced he's driving for Indycar.
i f*cking love your vids dude
Outstanding trip through time yet again (and sorry for the mini essay again, but you get my mind running fast about all the possibilities!) You could read the phone book and make it interesting :D I thoroughly enjoyed that perspective of the history of the Indy 500. I don't know if you're interested in doing it, a history of that race from its beginning, just from the standpoint of the race rather than where the drivers come from would be of interest to me too. (Don't mistake that to mean I'd have preferred that over this video, this is an additional one - a complementary one, as it were.)
Do you know if the 500 is going to be shown online at all? Indy used to show them on their channel about 2 weeks later (which is fine by me), but unless you fork out for Sky Sports (or maybe BT Sport), there's no chance of watching it on tv in the UK. So, thanks to a sort of tech often found sponsoring YT channels, if it's online, I might actually get a chance to watch it this time! It'll be on my tablet (haven't found a free, reliable vpn for my lappy yet), but I'll take that over nothing!
I may be an F1 fan first and foremost when it comes to it, but I absolutely enjoy and truly get the sheer difficulty of oval track racing. It's a special skill and one I appreciate. I'll always prefer road racing (as in tracks like Road America - Liberty, forget Miami, go there! Or Watkins Glen, or...) as opposed to street racing which can be a major yawn, depending on where, who's driving, the weather etc - though some can be edge of the seat stuff, especially in the junior categories. Max Verstappen's wins at the Norisring (IIRC) in the wet, sticking to the concrete road like he was on rails whilst the safety car and everyone else was all over the place and demanding an outboard motor (in Max' first year of *any* car racing), were the stuff of legend (and they landed him with the RB job). Also, Billy Monger's win at Pau in the wet, from the back, with his adapted car were some races I'll never forget!
But I do appreciate the skills required and the sheer danger of oval circuits. Another race I'll never forget was Greg Moore's last one. I'd been a Cart fan and while Eurosport was continuing to show the 'merged' groups in the first few years, I got a great chance to learn to understand oval racing. Then bloody Sky took over :[
Anyway, I'd grown up a Graham Hill fan - initially too young to really understand what was going on, I think it was his DIck Dastardly moustache which drew me to him lol - so I've often wondered if anyone from today's drivers could manage to repeat the achievement of the triple crown^ of each of the most prestigious races in the world, and Alonso is the only one at the moment who is capable of doing that, unless Nico Hülkenberg has an amazing change in fortune - and wouldn't we all love that!
^There is also the possibility of adding to the triple crown: the grand slam: the 3 races plus either F1 World champ, the Indycar championship or the WEC. If all 3 of both races and championships could be won [the double triple crown?], then that would underline that racer to be probably one of the greatest *all-round* racers of all time, though not necessarily the best in any one category. Alonso could, theoretically, do that, or could have if he'd decided to go full time in Indy after retiring from F1 first time around, because he's already got the F1 and WEC championships and the Monaco & Le Mans wins. There would be great arguments against him being the best in any of the 3 series: we already have Tom Kristensen (Le Mans/WEC); either Michael Schumacher or Lewis Hamilton - depending on Lewis' record when he retires; and whomever is the best in Indycar history. My knowledge of that isn't that great, though Scott Dixon must be up there?)
What do you think? Should there be that interest in gaining all of those championships and the race wins? Or do you think that it's better for drivers to concentrate on one series? Had Mansell gone to sports car racing seriously after winning the Indycar championship, he could have become the second triple crown (or even the first double triple crown) holder. I know he tried later at Le Mans with his boys, but that car didn't get very far (not his fault). Maybe someone from today's grid could do it?
Sky sports have exclusive rights in the UK, just buy a nowtv pass for Sky sports for a day
it was very much a pay situation for clark hill and stewart. now that that's no longer a problem, as well as the triple being ceremonious at best, I really think JPM is now the last shot. it really makes no sense to pursue it with any real intensity anymore unfortunately
F1 guys tend to come into IndyCar and excel at ovals...
... And struggle on street/road circuits.
That just shows how different F1 and Indy cars really are.
I wish I could be this good lmao. Awesome stuff
Next year for the Indiaopolis 500. McLaren would have to revive Jensen Button or bring Daniel Riccardo.
I think the next one to try will be Ricciardo. He want to remain in the history of the sport and already won Monaco GP.
When he will realise that he will not become F1 world champion,... he gotta find new objective.
Really good point honestly. Totally agree he’s the next to try
Opinions on Grosjean racing in Indycar cause I’ve noticed that he’s doing better than most expected
I hope Alonso goes for it again in 2023 , since he is going to stay in F1 until at least the end of 2022
Piastri can take over his seat in Alpine , so its killing two birds with one stone
Hahaha how many times was Clark photographed flipping off the camera like that
honestly? I would say like.... zero haha
I think it’s amazing that Graham Hill the only person to get the triple crown and Jim clark (probably the closest to the triple crown of anyone else due to his podiums at leMans) ended up at the same f1 team at the same time and if The triple crown had the same allure back then as it does now they would surely be both triple crown holders
There’s no question jim would have been a triple crown holder. He was killed in an F2 crash as it was rumored airing on the side of bonafide truth he was retiring that next season from F1. I would wager he was going to be racing in other series still
Sato is now a 2x Indy 500 winner
Its very much possible that we wont see another triple crown winner ever again. With f1 getting harder and harder to get into many drivers could win le mans and indy 500 but miss the monaco gp.
A whole video could be made about whether Monaco or the F1 Championship should be part of the triple crown.
Probably haha Monaco has never made sense to me given it’s so Saturday dependent and low aero focused. I suppose by optics. Makes me wonder how often does the champion win in Monte Carlo?
Mainly watch F1, in the Louwman museum in The Hague I have seen Arie Luyendyks winning car.
The rear engine switch is what really killed the ladder for American drivers. When the cars went rear engine, then it really favored the Eruo style. The fact that road racing is not that big in the US, and now you have to bring more money then talent to a team to get a ride has also killed off a lot of the American drivers chances.
It’s a chicken and the egg sort of deal ya know. The rear engine didn’t necessarily kill it, it just was significantly better on road races. Which required increased rigor and better skills for road racing over the years. And the more advanced the racing line got, the better equipped drivers were in the lower Formula career ladder were who race at SPA & Monza as early as 6-8 years old years old. So it was a vicious cycle. Hence why Formula 1 drivers do so Wel on ovals. Adherence to racing line comes natural. Those drivers like Rossi and Sato have a very long history of high performance on all Indy road courses as well statistically. Ovals are just so damn hard with bias and adjustment . Most Formula 1 can’t really appreciate it bc formula 1 from a throttle perspective is quite simple
Nowadays if you're not a full time IndyCar driver, the chances of winning the Indy 500 are very slim. It's too hard to get a good ride. We're seeing that with Alonso's results. He was competitive in an Andretti car and not at all competitive with mid tier teams. You need a fast car or a whole bunch of luck.
This is very true
still hard to believe you have 210 subs less than a year ago...
*I'm still waiting for Fernando's F1 wars video...*
stay patient friend :) I got your back don't worry. Need to ease into digital massacre I'm going to get about the upcoming sainz video haha
CrankyYankee: Makes a 25 minute video over who ate the quickest drivers in the world.
Me: Laughs in NHRA
Drive a jet engine potato for 1/4 mile is laughable haha
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha bottle rocket cars good for 1/4 mile. Weak. Try 500 miles at 230 mph
I think having F1 drivers, especially former F1 World Champions compete at Indy can only be a good thing, and brings the whole event to a whole new level for those of us who aren't American. I have been to Indy, albeit to watch the F1 racing when that was there and never for the Indy 500, but it is an amazing venue and the atmosphere was great back then. I can understand why some are torn over not wanting former F1 drivers who aren't fully committed, but it does spotlight IRL/CART or whatever it is called now, and give it more exposure worldwide. Oval racing is very different to the road course circuits that are the staple of F1, but I think as was shown by Alonso on his first shot at the Indy 500 it is possible to adapt, and have the skills to thrive. The Indy 500 is more of an endurance race than a pure out and out sprint that most races are and so takes more than just fast driving. It takes concentration, fast driving skills, and of course an engine that can go the distance, which probably means a bit of luck as well. It is a spectacle and I'd like to see more crossover between F1 and the Indy Series of racing. I'd love to have seen how the likes of Franchitti, Power, Dixon, Castroneves, Wheldon, Paul Tracy and many others would have fared given the chance. I do wonder why some weren't. I know many will name Michael Andretti as the reason, but for every one like him there are others that did better, like Jacques Villeneuve. I guess money is the main reason, and the kind of opportunity that would be offered. Going from winning races at top teams to making up the numbers at the back of the grid probably wouldn't have been appealing, but nonetheless I would be interested to see whether it could still work and I'm confused as to why it hasn't happened a little more than it has, even if only on a handful of occasions.
Chilton won 1 race here in the states. Chilton spent his first season here in the MRTI/Indy Lights series; the F2 equivalent, and has become a back marker in Indycar ever since! And his 1 win was on an Oval in the deep corn fields of Iowa! RIP Iowa Motor speedway! In 2015 that was our first race ever as proper Media hard card credential holders for Indycar and MRTI which is it’s 3 Ladder Series into Indycar with names like Pato Oward, Oliver Askew, Hinch, lol Marco Andretti lol omg so many stories! Anyways, oh yeah, Chilton. He umm well hes not at all a fan favorite nor a heel like say Santino Furruchi! Cant stand that smirk
can you do the 2008 season. I love the season walkthroughs
You got it! That and 2003 are being written
@@CYMotorsport 2003? why o3?
@@Dr.Doomsday19 2008? Why 2008, lewis borington won if i remember well
@@recipoldinasty but he won t the final corner.
Guess we can add a second victory for Sato to this
I know right haha atleast he got some air play
CrankyYankeeF1 that means he made history right?
I mean winning is history . He doesn’t have a triple no
I do love your videos but only a passing thought about Hill in a video about the triple crown is a bit of a disappointment.
Have you looked into that race? Hill doesn't even think he should have won. I respect your opinion of course but I usually have a reason for why I write the way I do. it just wasn't the objective of this video even if his win wasn't controversial. this isn't a video about the triple. It's to lay the ground work to bridge the gap of the two sports. That's why at times it might appear I ramble about drivers who didn't have well known careers in F1. Do look into that 66 indy 500 before being disappointed with me haha I feel I've earned that.
Yes Slap!
He's a cool dude - hoping to cook something up here soon with him if others are interested considering we go about content in a similar way.
speaking about S1ap makes me hoping for a video about the time two Nascar racers race at '74 Le Mans 24.
Only the best win both 🏆🏆
Jim clark is the greatest ever
If it wasn't clear already, I def showed my hand this video that I fully agree haha
AWS disagrees. He isn't even in the top 20 Haha!
@@Bahamuttiamat The drivers in that stupid list are only from 1983 onwards
@@Buttermilk0 I know. I'm just poking fun at the idiotic list. Dumbest shit I've read in decades, possibly ever.
Zack E; you hit the nail squarely on the head, Please check out my comment about Nigel Mansel and the notation regarding "The Great Jimmy Clark" aka; "The Flying Scot."
When will you Release your Scott Speed video?
well, maybe another time will come for Alonso when he can fare better. P21 was farther back than most expected. personally, I predicted something like p12
What about a rally driver that takes to single seater car, I mean while nissany senior did and the result were left to be desired. What about sebastien loeb take a red bull car back in 2009 instead of vettel, will he do well or not?
don't get me started on rally haha aside from how misunderstood oval racing is among global motorsports fans, rally driving is right up there with the most criminally underrated. personally I think that and moto produce the most raw skill and translatable performance to a single seater. Vettel taking that seat though was the right move but I think rally drivers in particular see no need to go to a single seater. weight limits on the car couldn't hold their balls anyway
JPM, Vettel, hulk to drive for SCG le mons hypercar and win the 24
Dream timeline
mate honestly... hulk would be pretty good with endurance racing. Nakajima is the same way
@@CYMotorsport he did win le mons in 2016
I would like to see Lando Norris come over to IndyCar. Perhaps in a few more years if the victories in F1 don’t come.
