John Oliver Shares Why He Could Never Host the Oscars - Late Night with Seth Meyers
• John Oliver Shares Why...
Late Night with Seth Meyers

The "I forgot the muppet wasn't a real person and kept talking to it as if to a real person, ignoring the puppeteer, even when not actively performing" is quite a widespread phenomenon, actually. It's unbelievably fascinating how a brain will just accept felt and googly eyes as an actual entity with agency, and block out the real person from that construct. We're so nuts, it's so great
Helps the puppeteers for the muppets are also really well trained and the Muppets themselves are such easy characters to cling onto.
See also Rubber Hand Illusion.
So shortly after Jim Henson's death, NPR aired an interview done with Kermit. Before they played it, the anchor said "We apologize that the audio on this clip is fuzzy. The audio tech made an understandable mistake--something any of us could have done--he put the mic on the frog".
i cannot see a mascot as a person in a suit. Its frozen expression is real to me.

Crisis fluffer is exactly what John Oliver is. He is uniquely skilled at making horrible news digestible.
This is gold. You win the internet today. 💖
"Crisis fluffer" ----> Doom massager ----> Apocalypse " whisperer " ----> Sarcy bloke complaining about the mess and wreckage left everywhere and complaining about all the VERY old (Christian - like) asshats risen from the dead saying 'See I told you so"- "Guy".
His show frequently makes me so angry in that the things he reports are actually true.
And firm for camera
I'm not sure you know what a "fluffer" is.
As a nation, as a society, we don't talk about John Oliver's dimples enough.
Do girls even like dimples?
@@riverman6462 Is the Pope Catholic?
@@themripley Well he does wear a pointy hat 🤔
@@riverman6462 check the comments on Trevor Noah. Being cute or handsome while having dimples also helps a lot
@@mindymmk Oh. I guess I am not cute or handsome then
Can we please have more of Seth Meyers and John Oliver together?
Like mixing vanilla and french vanilla
These are always the best interviews.
Feeling a bit low, been watching old Oliver Meyers/Colbert/Ruffin interviews 🙂 Helps
I saw John doing the rounds on the other talk shows a little while back, and I was fully so excited, because I knew he would eventually be on Late Night
Yes please!
This entire interview was gold. Seth's ability to banter is beyond impressive. And he doesn't need to follow a set of questions to have a good interview.
Let's be honest here. Even if Seth had a list of questions, it wouldn't make a difference because their conversation would get derailed after 0.7 seconds anyway. That's why it's glorious :D
I need a day drinking segment with both of these!
We all need this
oh hell yes
So agreed! 🍾🍷🍸🍹🍺🥂🥃🧉😅😅
Yes
And the cookie monster
John's utter knee-slapping delight at Seth's "what's it like to work with Cookie Monster?!" line is just charming to behold. These two always bounce off each other so well. More please!
His reply, too, was absolutely delicious. :D
John should always come on Seth’s show after big events just to talk about his feelings about them. His last couple appearances have been gold.
100% agree
Nothing makes me happier than John Oliver being interviewed by Seth. Sooooo happy about it
Not even the love of your parents, siblings or the smile of your children? 😂
@@nedim_guitar It'll be alright mate! It'll work out
What about Steven Colbert?
THIS is what makes you happy. You have a sad existence.
This isn't one of those "This is subpar check this out instead" replies, but you should look up John Oliver and Russell Howard. Russell Howard is another British comedian, and was actually mentored by John when he was still in the UK, so they're genuinely good mates that go way back. There's even one where he lets Russell tickle him!
John Oliver may allegedly be terrible at interviewing others, but he is an absolute joy in the guest seat on every late night program that brings him on.
Agreed! If you missed his interview around Christmastime with Amber Ruffin, I recommend it. So good!
I once saw Kermit and Jim Henson being interviews by Merv Griifin. Even though you could clearly see Mr. Henson, Kermit became the focus of attention. Henson was so good that the interview was immediately like having two live guests. Kermit was looking around and reacting while Henson answered questions. Pure magic.
I'm pretty sure the outtakes with John and Cookie Monster are somewhere on CZcams. It's pretty magical.
@Chris Spicer Here's to magical! Here's the clip czcams.com/video/H916EVndP_A/video.html

Cookie Monster ate his tie, and John could not stop laughing
Yes, it's one of the funniest things ever
I’m a Simple Man- I See John Oliver and I’m Already Entertained
John hosting the Oscars is one of the only things that might get me to watch.
💯
Here I am in a room full of ego-maniacal actors, whom I want absolutely nothing to do with. Goodnight everyone!
Bonus: John hosting the Oscars with Oscar the Grouch
Imagine him doing it with Ricky Gervais 😯
Basically that would be him mocking everyone and everything in the room.
'Congratulations on reaching the pinnacle of your career by pretending to be a blood-soaked maniac for 2.5 hours.'
I love that John Oliver and Seth are two of the funniest people and they genuinely like each other. Or so it seems.
I love how they don't even really acknowledge that the audience is there. They could be having this conversation anywhere and they'd still be laughing at how ridiculous it is.
@@samuelschmitz186 True. I think if they were in a restaurant having dinner together, the conversation would be pretty much the same.
Same when Oliver is with Colbert!!!
@@MsWarriordiva Colbert always has that reserved pastor energy.
He doesn't completely relax and ignore the line like these two nerds do.
@@MsWarriordiva while I like John on any show (even Fallon who isn't normally my thing), I think Seth and John are definitely the best together. Colbert doesn't fully get into it and always reigns John in (at least in the video we see), whereas Seth legitimately let's John say anything (ex: his running mafia praise from a few interviews ago. or the interview literally right after this [same day] when John calls out Seth on Shazam.) I love how uncontrolled and happy John is with Seth
Oliver´s realism is so refreshing. Don´t get me wrong, I think most of the late night hosts are both honest and funny, but you can tell they have limits to what they actually can say. Oliver just says it.
Yes, it was really refreshing hearing him call the people at the Oscars some of the most over-praised people in the world because they really are and as a society we almost never seem to stop to think about it. Don't get me wrong, good directors/actors etc definitely contribute real value to the world but the fanaticism surrounding them is just extremely disproportionate to what they actually do, no matter how good they are at it.
Probably because he is not American. Well, he actually is now, but he hasn't adopted that fake cheerfulness that almost every other host shows.
I love how physically tickled John Oliver gets when he hears something funny.
In part two of this interview he literally bounces off the chair!
@@BarryRijkseLink?
"Most over praised people in the world and we give the trophies like they were dogs" Best description of the Oscars ever 😆😆
Bad take by John. He takes all the awards he gets, so he is kind of a hypocrite. Everyone wants recognition in some form.
@@tonyg76 Well, he is not over-praised. And he is also quite intelligent. I can't imagine him behaving like a spoiled child like Will Smith did
@@tonyg76 Except, did he ever say he was an exception? I doubt that if you told him you thought he was being gifted awards like a showdog that he'd deny you.
@@tonyg76 He calls himself overrated all the time. I don't think it's at all hypocritical to call other people overrated as well.
@@moonshadow1795 He does not have to take the awards, but he does. If awards are so overrated, take a stand and don't take them!
You guys need to do a regular show together. This was pure gold.
If these two did a news show together in the vein of SNL's Weekly Update, it would be absolute gold. Would love to see them on their own podcast. Their natural chemistry is uncanny. Potentially stronger than Colbert and Oliver. Which is even crazier considering how long Oliver and Colbert have known each other.
right?! I watch every interview I can find with John Oliver, and while he and Colbert are still great together, I truly think he's even better with Seth. Seth goes along with his shenanigans more, whereas Colbert will far too often try to reign him in or cut to commercial
I loved John's interview with Cookie Monster. Cookie roasting him on his weather joke was hilarious 😂😂😂
The bloopers and outtakes were awesome as well.
These two are national treasures!
In their “uncoordinated” matching bestie outfits 😂❤😂
The Muppeteers are absolutely amazing at bringing the Muppets to life. Everyone always of every age talks directly to the Muppet because they feel like real beings.
Fun fact: the man Caroll Spinney, who played the very difficult to operate and world famous Big Bird, also was the man behind the trash can of Oscar the Grouch! There's a wonderful documentary about him & the characters over the years.
Wait, so Big Bird and Oscar never talked to each other?
he was also supposed to be on challenger’s final mission, but was saved because the big bird costume didn’t work in the shuttle seats
What?! 🙂 Just added to my Google Watchlist: "I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story" (2014) -- Thank you!
💕
I kinda feel like the only people who didn't already know that are people that don't care about the Muppets.
@@winterwatson6811 Actually, the idea never really made it out of the initial planning stages... it was a very early concept for when NASA was trying to bring the idea and love of space to children. Spinney seems to have elaborated on the story just a bit.
The clips with John and Cookie are cryingly funny. When I'm down I play those clips.
These two are a riot together
That was _violently_ delightful

See Cookie doing the red riding hood story ( Kermit playing interview guy ), it's comedy adults can enjoy.
John would be excellent at hosting the technical awards that usually get buried. His class consciousness would be perfect for the "underclass" of the craft awards that get shifted to some other venue, some other night.
I wonder whether the Sesame Street major puppeteers have received lifetime achievement awards, as t&ey have charmed people of all ages - and making professionals forget they are interacting with puppets shows great skill. I was happy John and Jimmy shared those stories.
John Oliver could improve anything. Every show he goes on is automatically better because of him.
Grand mothers funeral, bad. Grand mothers funeral with John Oliver, hilarious.
Emergency surgery, bad. Emergency surgery with John Oliver, awesome.
Catching your partner cheating, bad. Catching your partner cheating with John Oliver, understandable.
He does fluff it the right ways ...
I lost it at the last line 😆

Maybe if your partner is Adam Driver 🤣
I read it in his voice 🤣
It's kinda precious how giggly and excited Seth gets when he has his in real life buddies on the show. Although in fairness if I got to meet John Oliver even once, I'd likewise be giggly and excited.
During the HBO Max purge, one of the shows lost was The Not So Late Show With Elmo, which is basically a late night show with Elmo hosting and doing adorable Sesame street stuff with that format. And the best part is Oliver isn't just a guest in some segments, he is a reoccurring character, as himself on LWT. The cast and guests of Elmos show would sometimes get lost and go through John's show as he was in the middle of a clear more serious segment, only to be interuppted by Grover walking past his desk because it's a short cut to go through John's set to get to Elmos set. Basically, Elmost late night show was literally the studio next door to Oliver's show, and they shared a backstage together. I think at one point, John interrupted Elmos show to ask him to not have his guys go through his show. His studio has been implied to be ON Sesame Street IN Sesame Street as a show. John Oliver is canonically apart of the Sesame Street cast on a deep level and I love it
oh wow its like the Larry Sanders Show for kids 😅
@@winonafrog kinda yeah, it was honestly adorable and a really good idea that I'm bummed was lost. It had as wide a variety of guests as Sesame Street has
Now if Cookie Monster were hosting the Oscars, I might tune in for once.
"Thiiiis is an Oscar.

@@Tao_Tology He doesn't use "is"
@@treetopjones737 He does for The Oscar Song.
Standards, dahhling.
the whole Muppet bit just reminds me of how Danny Treijo was working on the muppet movie when he got the word his mother died. and he finished out his shooting schedule but that he kinda had shut down emotionally for the rest of the shoot. He wasn't mean or anything but he didn't wanna talk about it so people thought he had some sort of problem. and on the last day of the shoot Kermit walked over to him and said "Danny I'm really sorry to hear about your mother" Danny this big huge dude just looked at Kermit... not the puppeteer... breaks down in tears and hugs Kermit and just weeps. Because its Kermit, and that "Im sorry" coming from Kermit in that moment probably seemed so genuine.
We know they are puppets, but we grew up with them and to a lot of us they are almost realer then people
It makes me happy any time John talks about the Muppets and how much he genuinely loves them
John, THANK YOU for talking about TNAF for 22 minutes counter to the Oscars. The Oscars is a shrine to the rich and what you did was work on the side of the poor. Thank you.
John Oliver's "crisis fluffer" hand gesture is the best moment in this interview.
Meyers and Oliver are the best combination. Oliver is so much funnier and relaxed with Meyers, and you can tell Meyers likes and respects him. They just always look like they are having the best time. I could watch them for hours. Someone should make these possible. They are such a great duo!! These are the super cool friends we all wish we had!! lol.
These two wit ninjas giggling at each others' mastery is just...just... Happiness!
John Oliver hosting the Oscars would be riot😂😂😂
He'll be like Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes, it's going to be a roast fest but calmly done😂
They're both cynical and pessimistic, but Oliver has the british gift of being giddy about it x)
John Oliver isn't a transphobic git
With many long drawn out verbal metaphors...
With A LOT of F bombs.
@@mgg5418 On a Disney owned channel? Not in a million years.
Now I want to see John with Cookie Monster again.
My two favourite hosts together, such a joy :)
mine too, since Trevor Noah resigned
I'm surprised people weren't cheering when John Oliver mentioned his segment* with Cookie Monster, because it's one of the best things the internet ever produced.
*Actually, there are 3 videos: One each for Mashable and for LastWeekTonight, and one outtakes video featured on Mashable. Collectively, the videos have 8 million views, which is a lot less than I expected.
I would a 1000% watch a whole series of Elmo & John Oliver interrogating bankers as a good cop, bad cop routine
Day. Drinking. With. Seth. And. John.
Make it happen Seth. You know it needs to happen. Give us this gift.
On a similar note to the Fozzie Bear story, years ago, I worked with a woman who liked to visit Disney World. She told us that she was always so excited to see Mickey & Minnie Mouse. She said that she knew it was silly, but you forget that there's a person inside the costume & you feel like you're interacting with the actual character.
Disney rule: if they broke character or were not fully in costume as they went out the door, they'd be FIRED.
2 of my favorite people together. This was fantastic.
Every day. Every day John Oliver could be the guest on LNwSM and I would watch with gleeful engagement. Every damn day!
I want to see John and Seth go day drinking
Please, please you two create a podcast or monthly show.
It's also one of my favorite wholesome bits, the ones with the Sesame Street.
I love John Oliver talking in any context
Two of my favorites! This could only be improved if they had Amber with them. I loved Amber's interview of John O on her show!
Only time I watch the interview before the monologue/closer look is when it's John Oliver. ❤
I need a podcast with these two. I could listen to them talk about anything for hours.
The John Oliver - Cookie monster collaboration is on CZcams, and it's glorious. I've watched the outtakes countless times, they're freaking delightful.

You two should get together more often 🤗🤗🤗🍀
Seth's upper register laugh is straight from his dad. So adorb
John Oliver is the reason I’m still here
the Muppets are so fundamentally intertwined into every stage of my development as a person , I do not know who I would be with out them
I admit ive had a crush on john oliver because he looks and speaks exactly like my art history teacher. Is it the glasses? The hardboiled facts packaged as jokes? idk. But i want a john oliver shaped cookie now, so i can bite into it and say "mmm, i love john oliver" without it sounding weird.
I love their banter, so entertaining
John Oliver, living, breathing hilarious madman genius!
Anyone else notice that John gave the most British hug ever? Ass out to create space for no body contact, loose arms and the sense that he’s very uncomfortable. If you told me John had royal blood I would believe it
I love that John loves the Muppets!! And what a compliment to the masterful puppeteers, who can make the person right in front of them be enthralled in such suspension of disbelief!!
I want a 60 min, monthly dialogue between these two until the end of time.
We all need a day drinking with John Oliver
Best Guest ever!!! Love him so much!!!
I love him! He makes my weekend just and right. He's right up there with Outlander series reruns
I loved that look on John's face "do you have to start about the royals AGAIN? You're doing this on purpose to annoy me, aren't you?"
Sparkling wits cracking each other up! 10/10 best medicine, more please!
Buried the lead: muppets! This was so sweet, i love that all these years later we’re all still talking about how incredibly life-like Jim hensons muppets are
Seth and John are always a great conversation/combination.
We need a day drinking episode with them. It would be great 😂
I really want Seth to host the Oscars, with the whole Late Night writing team.
Seth and John day drinking. That would be great
I want a show with Seth, John, and Cookie Monster.
I once worked in a kindergarden that had Santas Helpers living in the loftsroom (as they do in Denmark) and coming down to do a show every day in December, with me hiding behind a cloth, hand puppet on my hand. Some of the older kids were saying straight to that hand puppet's face: "You are just a doll, you are not a real elf ("nisse")"
But straight to the puppet's face, and in the second person ("you" not "it"). It was somehow so cute!
Seth needs to go day drinking with John!!!
John Oliver is my persona-twin. Love him (with contempt.) His down-to-Earth sarcasm and effortless funniness (see also: most Brits) is something I can relate to 111000%

"there's not going to be a run on the banks" *deadpan stare*
Funny that
YAY!!! John is here!!! Immediately clicking to watch!!

I love that they're matching. Coordinate tops!
After years of almost dressing the same, John and Seth are slowly starting to match their outfits
His assessment of the Oscars 😂 I def watched the Oscars and then went straight to watch his show that night
"Crisis Fluffer" is a great band name.
I don't have time to watch millionaires talk to each other. Unless it's John Oliver with Seth Meyers. This always slaps.

The news anchor skit John did with Cookie Monster was comedy gold.
I love John Oliver so much he’s so entertaining to watch interact with Seth. I normally find interviews insufferable (no offence I love u I’m sorry) but there’s such a genuine friendship between them that it makes it so great to watch.
