Also good luck calling *British comedian* a nobody or irrelevant. One major skit of theirs is to be self depricating, since British humor also in general is dry and self-depricating at times.

To be fair, not even Johnny Carson could hide his distaste for guests that he wasn't crazy about having on his show.
There were times when he was forced to have guests just because the network was promoting a TV show or a movie.
In those cases, Carson would just ask a few questions and let the guest talk and talk until his or her time on the air was over.
One such guest was Bob Hope. Who had a lot more power and influence than Carson did at NBC. So whenever Hope had something to promote, he would ask to be on Carson's show. Almost unannounced. Much to the frustration of Johnny. Who had to tell their other guests to reschedule their appearance for another time.
Carson admitted to close friends that he didn't like Bob Hope for that reason. And if you watch his appearances on Carson's show, you can tell that there is some friction between them.

John Oliver does portray a very particular viewpoint, I'll give you that. More importantly though, he doesn't fail to back it up with realistic arguments, compelling ideas, and most importantly, actual facts. What separates him and so many others is that John Oliver is so much less reliant on fearmongering and scapegoating to prove a point, and rather than rely on the status of a network like Fox or CNN, his show succeeds because it is skillfully crafted and well-oiled, and people actually take time out of their day to seek it out because of that.

John Oliver is often called the king of late night, but I think Seth Meyers doesn't get enough credit -- I genuinely think he may be the funniest late night talk show host out there, and possibly the best of all time. John Oliver is VERY close, however, so seeing the two of them together, ripping on each other so perfectly, is just amazing. What a power duo of comedy!

I've never heard Oliver called that.
It makes muuuch more sense for someone who has a nightly show and for most weeks in the year than the 'whever-we-let-john-out-of-his-void' schedule he's on.

Oliver does something different than late night.
I agree on Meyers, mostly because when he clicks with a guest, they just go down rabid holes of fun and jokes that clearly have nothing to do with a plan or script and they often make the reason for being there (promo of something) a side note. It comes across as so casual and improvised, which I like.
