This video seeks to understand the meaning behind the humour presented in Macdonald's jokes, and why it does or does not hold up today.
Macdonald's version of "Weekend Update" often included references to prison rape, crack whores, and the Germans' love of Baywatch star David Hasselhoff. He would occasionally deliver a piece of news, then take out his personal compact tape recorder and leave a "note to self" relevant to what he just discussed. He commonly used Frank Stallone as a non-sequitur punchline.
Macdonald repeatedly ridiculed public figures such as Marion Barry, Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson, and O. J. Simpson. Throughout Simpson's murder trial, Macdonald constantly pilloried the former football star, often heavily implying Simpson was guilty of the brutal slaying of his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman. In the broadcast following Simpson's acquittal, Macdonald opened "Weekend Update" by saying: "Well, it is finally official: murder is legal in the state of California."

I had been binging on Norm the last couple of weeks, not because I knew he
was going to die, because I go there whenever I get tired of the World
Same thing, the segments on the Lettermen show tend to give me a a good positive feeling, as do his segments with Conan O'brian. They never fail to make things better. Cheers!
Yeah he was a force of nature. I'll miss him forever. Glad we have videos like these!

The Whole Damn Thing ?!!
Its a pleasure to subscribe to a scholar and a gentleman like yourself.
A scholar would say "damned," not "damn," and wouldn't use a reflexive pronoun unnecessarily. Might even put an apostrophe in "it's!"
Edit: Golly, you even used "like" when you should have used "such as." Four mistakes in one sentence, fellow scholar!
Let me be a good scholar and fix that:
"The whole damned thing!?
It's a pleasure to subscribe to a gentleman and a scholar such as you."
Yes, my life is meaningless.
too true
Comedian Norm Macdonald died this week after a private battle with cancer.
Or so thr Germans would have us beleive.
I think I know who the real culprit was. You guessed it, Frank Stallone.
I suspect David Hasselhoff had a hand in this....you know WHY? Because Germans LOVE him!
Watching this I can’t help but be surprised Norm’s ventriloquist career never quite took off

Rest In Peace
What made Norm great was he didn't spare anyone. It didn't matter where they were from, who they are, which "side" they were on. They all were the butt of his jokes because he realized it's funny to laugh at the absurd and dumb.
Why I liked his syle was he always created jokes for himself and I think he got a kick out of the few who really get the humor he saw in his observation, not pandering to get cheap reactions. His jokes were pretty funny if you get the point he is making... and at times he would make stuff up to just see how far he could go before he was ready to just pancake them... he would then just end the now 5 min long yarn with a really funny oneliner that makes no sense at all or just hangs without no payoff... which I mean is the joke... I just took 6 min of your time to get you all in ready to hear the payoff, without a payoff or resolution. This is pretty savage.
Well said. I remember laughing out loud at that bloated clown face look he had going after all those Rosie O'Donnell fat jokes, then found out it was mostly a side effect of the cancer medicine. Imagine the irony even he and his fans could grasp. I was so happy for him when he slimmed back down at the end after the cancer ate away that stupid bloated look. At least he didn't have to apologise to his betters for being such a fatfaced backwards class pasty

The greatest mind of comedy ever
No one compares!!!
I am going to take what you say as literal cuz its only right to. I think Mort Sahl, George Carlin, Steven Wright, Jerry Lewis (movies), Buster Keaton, Mel Brooks, and Frank Fay (brand new way of entertaining for his time) can be runner ups if we are talking greatest mind in comedy. Jim Downey helped make his Weekend Update jokes, and that's not to diminish Norm's talent because he's great too. The more ppl work together, the better.

Omg I wondered if this exists and you nailed it!
It’s crazy that he opens up saying now the fake news. A few decades later, it’s all there is. Pioneer right here!
There are some fascinating docs on the lady who had coffee spilled on her.
Anyone too young to remember, or didn't catch it the first time around, she ordered coffee at McDs, it spilled as she left, and she sued them....
The jokes were... How do you spill coffee on yourself and take the coffee makers to court???
The coffee use to be some crazy degrees hot back in the day, the lid was semi loose and the burns the coffee causes was siiiiiiick. Please don't look up the pics, but it caused second and third degree burns. I can still vividly see the image in my head please, dont look up but.... Yeah after that Doc my mind completely changed on the issue and I felt bad for her and her family. I don't believe the payout even covered the skin graphs and hospital stays.
I don't eat at McDs - but I grabbed coffee there for the 1st time in ages - from the drive thru - it was INSANELY hot - took a while before I could sip it - had to pull over and take lid off for a while.
It comes out the temperature of lava today so I can only imagine.
@@randyj420 from the research I could find, they never changed the actual temp of their coffees. It's actually tested at being hotter than other spots like burger King or Dunkin.
it fused her labia together from spilling on her lap. she definitely deserved the money

Wow! Excellent of you to put this together and make it available to all of us! Subbed. 🇨🇦
Rip Norm. Most humbly under-rated comedian. Thanks for being yourself.
Under rated ?
Hard to believe hes gone....
Charles Rocket was underrated.
My favorite
Norm: Hey you want to hear a great joke?
Me: Ohhh this is going to be great to see where he goes.
Unsuspecting: Leans in to hear the joke.
Norm: Then goes into a really long tale that he just ends without a payoff leaving most of the audience totally confused and no resoloution. Which is savage AF since the payoff is expected. Leaving someone unresolved has a real effect on some. This makes me so happy since I just love the way he keeps the audience from figuring out that his joke has no other point than to leave them totally wondering why they did not get the joke...
At times I think other than some jokes he wrote himself that he says live that are not expected but since his actual jokes get the best reaction it was hard to fire him.
I think he would just go to writers meetings... and just accept the jokes pitched that he actually knew were really just crap... but it made the meetings really fast... hard to fire him when he did his job... and then writes several better jokes... he just found a way to rig the SNL system...
NM was really just a guy who loved walking everyone he could down a one way dead end street to teach you a very good lesson...
A sucker is born every minute.
What made Norm unique among comics.... he ACTUALLY LIKED bombing with jokes!! He said as much in at least one interview!! Dude was FEARLESS!!
A talentless comedian is a thing everyone should fear.

All strikes should take place in baseball.
46:45 - Norm -"I'm afraid to know what you're applauding at there"
- Me - yea that's fucked up!
This video makes me very disappointed i did not bother to research into Norm Macdonald until after he passed. He seems to be one of the first comedians on prime cable television who truly had an impenetrable personality. His jokes were always jokes, they either evolved or crashed and burned with a torn crowd, but he truly tested society's ability to recognize comedy from reality, and you really had to question some of what he was saying. Norm was truly a genius, and his firing from NBC over OJ jokes seems truly petty; I side with letterman on this, Norm was wrongfully terminated, and Ohlmeyer deserves public reprimand for making prime time comedy stick to PG jokes and banter, or at least contributing to that set of rules.
All I can say is, rest in peace, Norm Macdonald. You taught us all how to be free and far thinkers, and I owe you an apology for writing you off until now.
Also: God himself told me that OJ is guilty.
Is this chronological?
yes, especially when he talks about the San Francisco 49's continuous Super Bowl point spread that landed them with the win, again and again. As well as the O.J. Simpson trial
Baskins & Johnson called me
Perfect ASMR sleep inducer, although funny as f#ck.
The world wasn't (and still isn't) quite ready for Norm's humor. Laughing through his WU but the audience wasn't.
If he had been funny it would have helped. The longevity of his career is a testament to his toadying and the nepotism it earned him.
@vangroover Tell me you're an Anthony jeselnik fan without telling me you're an Anthony jeselnik fan
It's interesting how he starts out doing Kevin Nelens tone and timing but he finds his own style.
My absolute favorite joke was the one when Norm announced the end of the Grateful Dead as a touring band, and that their fans - once known as “deadheads” - would then be called “homeless people.” Damn dirty hippies! Anyways, enjoy what you can of Earth Hour.
