- I finally Finished my pseudo-review of the Savage1's by Phil Calvert. These trucks are Phenomenal!
I mention the details in the video captions, but for anyone wanting to know more that didn't bother to read the captions, here are the specifics relayed from Phil himself:
"The hanger is machined form one solid block of aluminum. Normal TKP’s are usually made in a 2 piece construction.(Surfrodz).
You can purchase the trucks separate from the motor mounts, if you have gear drives.
One can adjust the mounts ever 2.36 degrees, and even forward mount the motors tucked under the board using the optional stabilizer bar.
And the obvious: extremely stabile at high speeds, but still carve like double king pins. (If your bushing setup is correct)"
Before adding anything further I need to mention that this was not sponsored. I did not receive any financial incentives and these trucks were paid for with my own money and the video was made without collaboration with any eskate or eskate component manufacturers other than to provide the truck manufacturer's description of the truck's physical features.
I can personally attest that Phil's description of the carving and stability are completely accurate. The trucks look and feel like something you'd find on a tank except when it comes to handling and performance where they feel more like a Formula 1 component. I believe the trucks are still in somewhat of a development stage and he is actively working to resolve any suggestions for improvement that he may have received previously though they are still available for purchase from Phil. From my own experience, the only issues i had run into were regarding belt and wheel/hub compatibility and Phil was quick to provide answers to any questions I had. Being a DIY minded component, these weren't originally designed with mass production board OEM wheels/hubs in mind. However, Phil has worked to increase the range of wheels that are compatible wtih the trucks, so future units will likely work with your Cloudwheels or stock Hurricane, Titan, or other AT pneumatics. The hubs and tires featured in this video were a set of Newbees MI hubs and Meepo cyclone racing wheel tires and tubes.
For more information you can find Phil on Instagram under the name "savagebuilder11" or on the forum.esk8.news/ forums under the name "Savage1." - Hry
The beginning of this video was absolute art
Thank you!
I just got these and am in the process of installing them! Great video man.
Hee Dan, quest32 here. You really did a good job here . The quality is 👌 and I like how you integrated the text in there.
Our journey has just begun brother and so our modifications.
Thanks man! I wasn't sure what direction I was going to go with the commentary/narration. I originally planned to add voice narration, but it's hard to find time and quiet to record with three kids 😂😂😂😂. Appreciate the comment and can't wait to see what you have in store!
Man. Excellent production, bro.
Much appreciated!
Great video Dan, Thanks! Happy riding!
Thanks for engineering these things! They're an absolute blast!
When do they go on sale?
Excellent introduction to the trucks! I have a set too. One thing, the DKPs that come stock on the Meepo Hurricane are super stiff. With The appropriate Riptide bushings, DKPs
are still more carvy. The Savage trucks have about 80% of the carviness of DKPs with way more stability.
I never tried riptides, but from what i've read, the reports are pretty much unanimously in line with what you're saying
Incredible video.
Thank you!
the intro was GORGEOUS
That board is so sick🔥🔥🔥🔥
Much appreciated!
Interesting. Greetings from Düsseldorf.
BEAUTIFUL
Subscribed for beauty. Well done.
Thanks for subbing!
Great video, loved the shooting style. Looking to pick up either this board (hurricane) or the voyager x. Just looking to mainly hit roads, no off-roading.
This is definitely a great board for street cruising. I personally am not a fan of doing much AT riding with it, since it lacks bindings and uneven terrain just wants to buck you off the board the entire time if you're not careful.
Nice! I'm always looking for what people are doing to these Meepo boards, they are certainly trick looking trucks. I wasn't keen on the DKP setup either, so changed them out for the riptide ones. I am a speed demon, I flog the crap out of this board everywhere it's now my main means of transport.
Yeah, they're super nice units for the cost for sure! After the truck swap, i was cruising at like 28-34mph average with relatively deep carving for that speed. I haven't used the hurricane in quite some time since a recent board upgrade happened and then the midwest winter struck. I've been meaning to put out an update on the gear. Hard to keep putting out content with three kids LOL
great job on 30 subs, dad noddle!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 who knows, maybe I'll be up to 32 subs by the end of the year!
wow you got 20 comments too!
@@BroadButtts well now you have 37 subs you are growing like a noodle
@@zedaphszedvancements6855 🤣🤣🤣 I beat my own guess! 2B subs, here I come!
@@BroadButtts 40 subs now !

Hi, you say in the video you had a couple issues. Definitely curious of what you ran into. Definitely gonna pick up a set.
Thanks
The two issues I had were belt and hub compatibility. Somehow or another it seems a lot of hurricane owners in particular are picking these up, which is awesome, but Phil had more DIY setups in mind when he had originally designed these. However, Phil was able to resolve all the issues I had after another hurricane owner sent him like, 6 sets of drive wheels and gears that were designed to work with stock hurricane truck systems. The belts were a pretty easy problem to solve. There are a number of people that have just about everything sized out in the forums, but just about every pulley requires a belt around 15-20mm longer than stuck. I ended up buying a completely different set of wheels altogether that worked with the original tkp truck design and i haven't even tried to swap out to the other wheels because the current mix of components i have has been spectacular. As far as future mods, I'm not entirely sure yet because I got sidetracked with a completely new and full DIY build, which is going to be absolutely ridiculous. Nothing necessarily out of the ordinary, but premium components all around. One thing i want to resolve before it becomes an issue is replacing the motors as another user (Joepro in the forums and FB groups) has discovered that the stock motors are not fully battle hardened and had pretty much full brake failure after one of the magnet retention rings broke in what appeared to be multiple locations causing the magnets to shift enough to cause failure.
Can you tell me what belts you ended up using? Thanks man!
i'm currently using 385 5M belts on a 66t wheel pulley. I can't remember the other sizes :(
Ive been thinking of slapping en axtra battery on my boneboard titan, it uses 13s-4p and has 930 wh, if i do a paralell then the range would be insane, next mod is gonna be wider trucks and larger engines that don't overheat in turbomode, it will be great. Saw somebody on CZcams already did this for the hurricane.
Yeah, battery mods are dope and i'd love to be able to claim legitimate 40+mile range even though i don't typically ride for more than 10 miles at a time. I definitely plan to do a full blown DIY in the future and i'd be happy with 25mph top speed and ridiculous AT range.
Also wanted to know what's next possibly a foxboc Unity and some new motors???
Great vid! Can you speak a bit about how the Savage trucks compared to the Meepo DKP in terms of carving?
Absolutely! The DKP's, although great for carving at lower speeds have an obvious lack of stability at higher speeds due to multiple points of articulation stacked on top of one another. Between the two, i can honestly say these TKP's are more stable at higher speeds, AND have smoother carving than the stock DKP's. Obviously bushing stiffness and tuning play a big roll in overall performance and handling, but from my time with both sets i can say that the TKP's provided me with a better turning radius than the dkp's at slow speeds and the much smoother and confident carving in the 25mph range.
@@BroadButtts Thanks for sharing your perspective!
So about the belts, did your stock Meepo belts work with the new trucks? If not, what did you replace them with? Also will the stock Meepo hubs now fit on the new trucks?
Thanks, Dave
longer belts are definitely necessary. I can't say specifically off the top of my head what the difference in lengths are, but it's something like, 15mm longer i think for each belt. WHen i released this vid, i had to purchase different hubs in order to get my hurricane back on the road. However, Phil is constantly making improvements on these in order to make sure they are compatible with as many wheel sets as possible. I was sent a new set of motor mount sleeves that should resolve the compatibility issues i ran into with the stock drive wheels. i haven't tried them out yet, but plan to soon and I'll report back to you if i can remember.
Hey Dan sorry had one more question. Does the stock baseplate get removed and if yes is it difficult to remove them. I haven't taken the board apart but I can see that the baseplates for the trucks are sunk into the board. Trying to get as much info on the install as I can.
Thanks
No prob! So the stock DKP's are obviously top mounted through the deck, but I found the TKP's would not fit in the hole the stock decks mount through, which is fine. Basically you just bottom mount the TKP's. I didn't notice any significant rise from Mounting the trucks on the bottom because the lack of a second king pin makes it about the same height with the lower mount. I was able to preserve the stock anti-sink plates which are back on the board, but I had to get some 1/4" longer stainless mounting bolts in order to get everything I needed back on the board in nice order. Aside from all that, the main thing I thing you want to know is how to get the stock top plate off, which just consists of pulling the lower king pin off and then removing the bolts to pull the top plate.
Hey board looks great, do you have a video for light installation?
Thanks
I may do a little something on that in a future vid. It's pretty basic, so I didn't think it was anything anyone would need a tutorial on, but I did a folding technique on the corners of the led strip that really cleans up the look, so that could be something to highlight.
Hey thanks for getting back to about the Hurricane base plate, the 1/4 longer bolts you mentioned you to pick up, those are the ones that drop through the board right?? I saw you were able to retain your stock top plate's anyway thanks.
Correct. I don't think i had the decorative plates that cover the mounting holes installed when i made this video, but i was able to reinstall them after in a pretty dope way. Maybe i had them on here later in the video?
What under board lighting system are you using?
NOICE :)
How did you keep the front arrow on the base plate secure?
I'm not sure if i had the baseplate installed in this vid, but i did reinstall it later. in order to retain the arrow and use the shredlights without it looking gross, i had to buy some longer bolts. I put the shred lights down first then the top plates so the shredlights mount between the deck and plate. Then and i used an adhesive velcro strip on the back of the arrow to give it some packing and prevent it from rattling. Also, the mounts that shredlights recommends for the hurricane will not work in this configuration. i had to get the angled mounts front and back.
If you don't mind me asking, how much did the trucks and motor mounts cost? I'm currently on the edge about upgrading to Trampa IR trucks/mounts, but I'd also love to support a local peep out. Also, any idea if they're compatible with the stock Hurricane all terrain wheel? And great vid, by the by :) I've seen the Hurricane getting so much hate, but for it's price, you can spend that extra on aftermarket VESCs and trucks to turn it into a real beast.
Hey! So I want to say the whole system runs about $530ish dollars with handle. Phil recently updated the design to allow for greater compatibility with stock wheels, so it SHOULD be compatible with the stock AT'S now. He sent me the new adapted sleeves that allow for the stock wheels to be used, but I have not given them a try yet since the ones I have on it now are just so nice lolol.
@@BroadButtts Thanks for the info! I reached out to Phil and he said that he had made some new mounts that worked with the stock Hurricane all terrain tires, which is awesome!
Sweet! are you picking up a set?
@@BroadButtts Currently, no, because I'm spending most of my time tailriding, and I have no idea how they'd perform in that situation. Could they handle well? Absolutely, but at the current price it's not something that I feel confident enough about to buy without testing first. I'll probably get an aftermarket VESC and motors before moving on to the trucks (too many horror stories of Meepo components freezing up and throwing their riders), and then I'll have to decide between Trampa trucks or Savage1's.
I’m in Grand Rapids mi. I just got a hurricane and plan on acquiring a set of these trucks myself! Have you used bigger wheels? I’m thinking about 190mm tire kit from meepo.
Oh that's awesome! If you ever end up in Manistee, hmu! I have a set of 200mm wheels that I'm pretty sure can work, but haven't tried them yet, so I would pretty confident that 190's are 100% g2g. Let me know what you think of the trucks!!
@@BroadButtts I went with the meepo cyclone racing wheels. I’d like to get 20 miles or so. I’ll see what kind of mileage I get with these and go from there. Have you played with different bushings yet? I have a bunch of riptide 96a that I used for the stock trucks. I weigh about 150lbs so they might be too stiff with the new trucks. I’ll let you know when I’m all set up!
@@Captain_Barrels I haven't tried different bushings yet. The set that Phil installed on these have been really nice for my weight so far. I know everyone seems to say riptide bushings on the stock trucks make a significant difference all around. I never bothered to find out.
I haven’t tried the stock bushings on the pneumatic tires but on street tires they made all the difference in the world. I used 110mm torque boards and 120mm clouds both the ride improved drastically. Small pebbles and gravel would cause a lot of instability on the stock bushings and they should but with the riptides I don’t have to worry as much.
Where did you get those carry handle things?
DIY. I made them out of Paracord with a standard cobra knot. There are a ton of guides on YT on how to make lanyards and stuff with the cord and that style of knot along with other variations.
⚡🤙🏼🤙🏼⚡
Do you know what size bearings and belts I would need to make this work with stock wheels?
the axles on the Savages are 10mm. the stock axle diameter on the meepo is 8mm. Most of the wheels you will find are going to be 22mm ID for bearings. For this setup, you'd need 10x22x7mm bearings. They will be a 1 for 1 replacement the stock 8x22x7mm bearings. As for belt size, i want to say every belt you currently use for your stock wheels will need to be about 15mm longer. I can't remember the sizes exactly, so i apologize for not having a more specific answer for the belts.
Where can I get those CNC handle/bumper guards?!
There's a guy by the name of Phil on the eskate forums who makes them. I reached him through his instagram account Savagebuilder11. I'm not entirely sure if he's still making them, but you can definitely reach out to him to find out. He's been dabbling in some other awesome machine work for eskate. He has a prototype spare tire mount anti-sink plate he's working on right now that i think is going to be really dope.
I’m struggling to find where I can buy these. Is there a store or do I have to contact the owner directly on esk8 forums?
he can be contacted on the forums or through IG @savagebuilder11.
Can you add a link to where I can purchase these
SO, the guy that makes them does not have a website yet. You can contact him through the esk8news forums or find him on IG or FB where he goes by Savage1 or Phil Calvert. Hope this helps.
How do I order?
Hi could you send me the link for this truck please
Hey Joffrey, Phil(The guy that makes these) Does not have a storefront at the moment, but if you contact him through IG(instagram.com/savagebuilder11/) he'll hook you up. I know he's working on building a website, but I don't know how long until it's finished.
Could we get an update to his IG? This link no longer works
