- m here to share my journey from being a new graduate nurse to leaving my first inpatient/bedside nursing position. I also wanted to share some tips on how I finally left bedside nursing.

I’m so sorry dear you went through all of that dear. I understand what you are saying. As a black nurse, I went through hell at the bedside. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
New grads ! You have more options out of school than just the hospital. You can do Homehealth, Hospice, peds, skilled nursing facility, and even IV therapy. There is so much.
nurses need to be kind to each other cause the job nurses do is not easy team work is important,thank you for sharing your story

Exactly!!! 💯 People need to stop gaslighting the real reasons why places are short staffed. They BEEN leaving and left BEFORE covid! They want so much from you with all of the unrealistic expectations on top of the treatment and lousy pay. Everybody talking about each other, then smiling in their face is crazy. Management is terrible, ans they need to stop thinking they're doing something with buying pizza! Who wants pizza smh?! I cant stand this profession forreal. You spoke ALL FACTS!!!
I can hear the pain and frustration in your voice, almost made me cry because I’m going through the same thing now. Thought something was wrong with me, thought I was stupid, thought I was in over my head. So I left bedside too. I start my dialysis job at fresenus next month. Wish me luck!! Girl, this was my experience as a tech. The nurses were definitely bullies, especially some of the ones who had.a little authority. Our DON acted like he was afraid of the nurses so every time a tech complained, he would call a meeting to call us out for our "whining" when we would most times work with 1 or 2 techs to 25 patients. Our patients were also patients that required a lot of care, most recovering from hip or knee surgeries, trachs, completely bed bound, etc. I'm in nursing school now and that experience is one of the main reasons why I am against bedside nursing for me. I'm also at a school where they advocate and help you get jobs in specialties that you want. No one is pushing med-surg.
Your video was very relatable! 💗 I’ve been a Nurse for almost 7 years and I’m looking to transition into a remote nursing role… possibly Utilization Management. I’m done with the bedside. I’ve given it 6+ years and needless to say it has cost me my mental health.
I haven’t even finished watching your video but this was me as a new grad 6.5 yrs ago on a Neonatal ICU UNIT. In my experience the biggest bullies were the nurses with less than 5yrs experience. I loved the older nurses. I remember my preceptor and her girl gang talk so much shit with me about all the newer nurses and telling me what not to do. It was so uncomfortable, and I’m talking as early as my first week as a nurse. I used to wake up in panic wondering if I did something wrong or missed something and if my preceptor was going to scold me for not stocking enough supplies. I had PTSD for years it wasn’t until my 4th ish year as a nurse/traveler that I stopped caring what others thought of me. You video is spot on!
Omg!!! Everything you said is true!!! I experience this as well. It really hurts to go through all that hard work and finally get to the point where you can carry out your passion and you can’t because of everything you said. I quit my grad nurse position as well the culture was totally messed up and it definitely hinders new nurses that’s just starting out and trying to learn. I just don’t understand it’s like they all forgot when they first came to the floor. Well said!!! Change needs to come!!!
Bullying doesn't happen if management doesn't allow it. Co-workers will bully others because they know they will get away with it. The person being bullied usually the ones to go, and the bully stays to attack the next person. I notice bullies usually are friends with the managers.

I wanted to be a nurse but when I was doing my research, I came across “nurses eat their young” phrase. I asked nurses and everyone would say “that’s so true!!!” I was like oh hell no! I’m not going into a stressful career to be bullied.
OMG, everything you said I’m experiencing now! 2 months in and ready to go, I’m actually speaking with my unit manager on tomorrow about seeking other opportunities! I would love to speak with the charge nurse, however they’re all friends…. And honestly even if I did have another preceptor I’m over the whole vibe of the floor and can’t imagine working there full time. Everything you said is so spot on. It goes beyond my new grad learning deficits it so much more going on. I find my self unusually nervous, anxious about the next shifts that’s a few days away 😢it’s just a feeling that’s not healthy and not right! I know it will not be easy as a new grad BUT this is just not it !!! Thank you for this it lets me know I’m not crazy ❤😊
Wow..this is my exact experience..6 months in and I know this shouldn't be..this could never be right..I already put in my application for another role..I just can't anymore.
I am not a new nurse by any means I’ve been a nurse for almost 9 years but this spoke to me so hard. I recently went from being a charge nurse in long term care to the hospital bedside for the experience and girl when I say catty doesn’t begin to describe what I’ve been going through. The bedside is killing me I think I’m going to put in two apps when I get off tonight because this video was my sign. Thank you❤
Well done! It's hard being in an environment where your values, whether it be surrounding health care or life in general, are not shared. That was my experience, and so I've made the leap myself. 10 more shifts to go then outpatient here I come. Never been happier even with the loss of stipend and differential pay 😊
Same here when I was a pct I didn’t see the toxicity and the cattiness but now I’m a nurse I see it all.
I’m an old nurse, 45 years. I am very sorry. Some of what you explain has been there forever unfortunately. Some of us older nurses have been through it too. Some of us remember and try not to pass the nastiness we can control on.
You know what I’ve noticed there is a lot of “Gaslighting & Gatekeeping “ in the nursing field which then leads to nurses just kind of figuring things out for themselves only to be corrected and proven to be wrong in the future when a new nurse comes around to question how something is done and that now experienced nurse can’t actually tell them how to do it because they’ve been gaslit & gate-kept so then they repeat the cycle …..and so on and so forth …
Creating toxic work environments which just gets more toxic with time because there will always be additional “DUTIES/TASKS” thrown upon nurse on a regular bases to add to the already overwhelming job duties

I got you thats what happened to me the preceptor was so mean she didnt want to help me as a graduate nurse and the management left me alone for the first tine i didnt know the ward and patients which was the knew that thats my first duty in the ward that gave so stressed and anxiety every day thats i know i made the right decision to quit last week and now i can smile even i dont have job now il mental health is so important
Bedside nursing is no joke , the bullying is on point . New grad nurses are always being picked on . I’m thinking about dialysis or wound care . Still not sure yet but I definitely don’t want to do bedside forever.
I agree 💯. Im a new nurse, 9 months now, I switched to pediatric private duty nursing and I absolutely love it 🙏💖🤗. I went from 55 patients bedside to 1 patient. Amen. Also you have great and kind energy, please post more videos! God bless
You hit it on the head with all your points. I am 1.5 year out of school and at the bedside and you said it all. Patient safety only matters when convenient yet the nurse is still liable for the total care of too many acute patients. I too am leaving bedside nursing cause I am not able to be the nurse I know I am supposed to be. I have conviction about that and that's enough.
I resonate with this video sis like I’m literally going through similar situation and just going back and forth with the decision although I keep telling myself to just do it and maybe it’ll get better with time but I know it won’t.

Im from Canada and i can tell you from my experience as s new nurse, to every unit i go to as an NRT nurse, everyone was very welcoming, super nice, always willing to help and to teach. Every unit has an educator nurse, amazing team work, amazing managers. Everyone wants you to succeed. I love nursing, i do most medicine units sometimes ED and mental health.
I think it really depends on the environment as you mentioned and it sounds like you got PTSD from bedside nursing. I jad that kind of experience when i used to work at Walmart back in the day....

I’m so sorry that this happened in your experience! I too went through something similar and was bullied when I first started working as a new grad RN and this was when COVID first started. I had no support from my manager at that time but I was able to get in with another preceptor. I made it out of training got my first year done and quit after that. I’ve now been a nurse for four years and become a Charge Nurse. I ended up leaving bedside just because of the toxicity, management pretty much everything you discussed in your video and now I work Dialysis outpatient as a Nurse. It’s definitely a better work life balance.

Everything u have been saying to you self on if you should leave or not is what I’m doing now. I’m on orientation and I hate it some days are better than other but I can’t. I keep saying maybe after orientation it’ll get better or let me wait another month. I’m looking at videos, articles and all the above about leaving. I’m almost two months in and I feel like crying every time I’m here because I don’t like.
I have 2 weeks left of orientation and contacted HR today about resigning. The environment is too toxic and I refused to let anyone belittle me etc. Great thing about nursing is that it is so many avenues
I’m in the same boat, 1 and 1/2 month into orientation and I really don’t like it. I’m just praying and trusting God for this next steps

Yes!!! Pushed you need atleast 1 year of medsurg. Graduate in May as a bridger but I’m positive I’m not starting out there unless I go through a residency program.

I love having these types of conversations. I had to leave my nursing job in North Carolina due to bullying and discrimination, which took a toll on my mental health.
I don’t have the flexibility to switch jobs like that. I’m a teacher and I want to be a pediatric nurse or even a school nurse. My intro to anatomy and physiology class had me stressed out and I felt like I wasn’t smart enough. As a teacher I don’t have the flexibility to work from home or working in a clinic. I’m barely making it as a teacher and I am in debt I am barely making enough. Getting into nursing school isn’t easy. I’m not in nursing school. I’m really trying to create a better life for myself. Any job is stressful. Even teaching is stressful. I want to be a nurse though. Sorry that happen to you. Glad you’re at a job that brings you peace.
Yes Ashley, I agree with everything you said. I experienced the bullying and anxiety that came with the high stress; 12 hour shifts were awful; and felt little to no support from management. I was actually medical forced to leave my RN job due to pregnancy complications... 20 years out of nursing and I am considering going back, I would need to take a RN refresher course. You asked "If We left bedside Nursing what did we do?". I stayed home and raised 2 kiddos. I was fortunate, some would say, I had a spouse who provided while I stayed at home with the kids. Well, one kiddo successfully launched into college and one just about to. Now, I'm really wanted to go back to work, it's time. I sometimes wish I would have at least stayed in Nursing part time, because I've heard no one will hire a RN after 5 years of leave. However, in all honesty, I had so much anxiety just like you described that kept me NOT running back. I'm wondering what advice people might have in my case? Do I spend the Money, effort and time to do a RN refresher course in hopes someone will hire me? or ???? I'm open to suggestions...

Hey Nurse Ashley, I like your video and agree with alot of the points you made. However, I do disagree with one point. The conduct of bedside nursing is beyond toxic at this point which has now turned healthcare into nothing but systemic capitalism. I remember when I was on nursing clinicals when I would be somewhat excited to learn. Then started working as a nurse while having students. Those poor students would come up and think they are going to be the best nurse. Just sad, but kuddos to them.
I would also say the miscommunication between the physicians and the physicians not showing up to see their patients for sometimes days was also a major hassle.
The good thing though about bedside nursing (medsurg) is that you do learn alot about medicine, different disease processes, NG tubes, blood draws, blood transfusions, heparin drips, labs, multi -electrolyte drips, jackson-pratt drains, insulin drips, all the types of dressings, central line removals, Picc lines, dialysis permacaths, fistulas, port access, sepsis protocols, lactulose enemas, foley catheters, etc etc lol.
Alot of the time, the physicians (especially hospitalists) would ask us medsurge nurses what do we feel is an appropriate treatment recommendation for a patient or if we agree with a certain treatment plan. I would say medsurge gives you a good foundation of medical knowledge before switching to a certain specialty.
Nurse colleagues of mine would say medsurge for nurses is very similar to how internal medicine is for physicians before and if they wanted to specialize. It will suck but your knowledge level is very high compared to many other nurses who have never worked a medsurge floor.
Not one lie told. I'm already back in school and I've only been a nurse for a year. I'm giving it one more year and then I'm going PRN until I graduate with my PMHNP.

I’m glad you were able escape the toxicity sis! You made all great points, I had the same experience and anxiety. I left bedside about 2 years ago after doing med surg night shift for 5 years for these exact reasons.I too am BSN, RN and it’s sad that you don’t know the behind the scenes issues you may endure as a new grad until you’re in the midst of it. I switched to outpatient office nursing and has been great for me, so many options available. Thank you for sharing! 🤎

I couldn’t agree with you more about the fact that it’s a checklist. We aren’t even able to educate adequately.
This is why they should not have taken Lvn 's out of the hospital. this was bound to happen. Now they have LVNs in SNF and got 20-30pts to 1 nurse.
I could relate to everything you said and unfortunately wether people want to admit it being a minority you get treated differently and if your not part of the clicks you might as well be a minority. And I agree with every point you had on that damn paper lol 😂

Nah eff med surg. EVERY SINGLE NURSE I’ve shadowed in clinicals/at my internship HATES it! Every single one! Told me all I needed to know. I’m looking to specialize asap! Either postpartum or the OR… I felt at ease there and so did the nurses who worked there.
Can you please make a video of what you do now, and how you got it? What are the experiences you need for the job? I’m new coming coming into nursing from bank management. I left it because of the anxiety attacks I was getting. I am coming into the health field because it’s more diverse but I don’t want to do bedside nursing. Do you have any suggestions for me? I’m told that I have to have my RN first then specialize into something.
Thanks for watching the video. ❤️❤️Yes, I got you, girl, I can definitely do a video on what I do now. There is so much you can do with your nursing degree, so don’t let anyone try to put you into a box. What you are being told is correct that you do need your RN (associate in nursing), LPN ( licensed practical nurse), or BSN (bachelor's in nursing) to work as a nurse. Many nursing specialties hire nurses without much experience and not bedside like behavior health, some clinics, dialysis, home health, home hospice, certain case management positions, corrections nursing, etc. If you don't know what specialty you are interested in (I was in the same boat), my advice is during your clinical rotations in nursing school, soak up all that hands-on experience and pay attention to what patient population you enjoy working with and what type of environment you like. You may be surprised by what specialty you end up liking the most. You can also see if you can find a part-time or pool position in a certain specialty to see if you like it now. For example, if you know you want to work in behavioral health, you can try to find a job as a behavioral health technician or behavioral health clinic receptionist to see if you like the environment and patient population while gaining experience. You would also have your foot in the door and make connections to have a job after graduation. CZcams, nursing vlogs, Instagram, TikTok, and just talking with other nurses also helped me. So you are off to a great start, by just researching and watching CZcams videos. Don't let it overwhelm you though. What is meant for you will be for you.❤️Let me know if I answered your question. What would be a perfect specialty for an introvert? I'm a pct on medsurg and lost all compassion for finishing nursing school. Everything you said is true. It's not the job that bothers me but it's the ppl. Toxic coworkers, crazy families, rude doctors. Ive seen many of my nurses have breakdowns mid shift. I'm seriously considering becoming a sleep tech, lab tech or anything where I don't have to juggle so many personalities at once. I feel guilty because I've already completed my prereqs for lpn and now I'm ready to back out. Looking forward to more content from you❤

5 miles during a shift easy. If I didn't work in healthcare and someone told me they walk 5 mile's during a work shift idk if I would believe them ha.

I work 3 12 hours shifts from 3-3 . Sometimes I hit the 5 miles mark before 12. It's no joke!

What’s sad about your testimony is that the nurse you experienced KNOWS you didn’t have the knowledge or experience for the blood transfusion. Your whole preceptorship was ‘101 bullying’. It was all a tactic to set you up for failure so that you quite. Even listening to you talk about this, made me anxious. Your voice was shaky. I hope your doing better. Thanks for sharing.
