I wonder if he says the same sentiment about prescriptions he writes for his patients. So many medicine that they don’t understand how they fully work and still hand those out. Why wouldn’t you risk taking a pro vs taking anti?
My Doc told me to take a probiotic with antibiotics to prevent C-diff. I ignored the advice, thought “whatever”, I ended up w/ C-diff! Now I take probiotics every time I take antibiotics without fail.
Imagine Antibiotics nuking the bacteria population in your guts , the moment the good bacteria that kept C-diff in check are gone , it becomes the Wild West for C-diff .
I have hepatorenal syndrome and I am on anti biotics daily. My GI is all screwed up due to the end stage liver/kidney disease and had the worse GERD. No medicine was working. My gut flora was probably wiped out for the last year since i kept nesrly dying due to SBP and had C Diff a few times so would get loaded up on strong antibiotics. About 10 weeks ago i tried yogurt for calories and protein but settled on a yorgurt drink... About 10 days later my acid became non existent. I still have issues eating and gut issues but it has helped overall tremendously. Now I drink 8oz of full fat Kefir. It is delicious and it helped when other things did nothing. REMEMBER people find the right probiotics too! I need to try prebiotics as well.
@@dianapennepacker6854 I’m sorry to hear that about your health. I’m glad that the yogurt helped some. I hope that you have more good days than not. Take care
I started taking probiotics everyday in the form of yogurt and already was trying to be consistent with a high fiber diet (it’s really hard in this modern world sometimes) and was taking benefiber everyday already. Putting benefiber in yogurt helps me stir the two good fruit yogurt I get and makes yogurt taste more enjoyable because I stir it throughly to try to mix in the benefiber. It also makes me feel better than when I just eat the yogurt without it (maybe this doctor can explain why that happens). I have tried probably 10 different types and brands of probiotics total and the only one that has actually worked for me is benefiber advanced that has a bacillus coagulans probiotic and guar gum for fiber. I don’t know why it works for me. (I have IBS+C and I can’t take psyllium husk because it dehydrates me even when I think I drink enough water.) I take the benefiber advanced every morning and evening and each half day I feel increasingly better. The Culturelle box that was next to the Benefiber Advanced (before I purchased it) said to take probiotics during antibiotic used and 10 days after. I trust that brand because it’s helped me before, so I tried using the advice. I stopped feeling like I was going to die after 4 days of using it (including 2 days after I finished the antibiotic). Today I’m halfway through the 10 days of using benefiber advanced post finishing the antibiotic. I breathing a bit better and since yesterday I’ve been feeling like I can hold onto stamina again. Better is that the powder makes plain water taste like almond flavored milk. There are so many get better fast scams out there but what’s helping me most is soups, plenty of water, a bit of spice (energy and sinus relief maybe though its been in Mexican style soups with lots of vegetables and a bit of meat), produce (both dried and fresh), occasional meat, yogurt, candied ginger (I personally consume a lot but everyone has a different tolerance), whole grains, miso soup (fermented) mixed with matcha, rest, and daily walks. It’s really super simple that eating healthy and moving around helps with getting better.
That's an exception if you take antibiotics. But if you don't take nasty antibiotics in the first place, a probiotic wouldn't be needed. Strengthen and build your immune system so you won't get infections. And won't have to take an antibiotic. That's fixing the root of the issue.
Sorry it’s really hard for me to believe anyone whether a professional or not when it comes to things like this. I say that because I see such a big difference in my body and how I feel when on pro and pre biotics. I understand if everyone doesn’t need them if they have a really well balanced diet but the truth is most of the population doesn’t, look at the ingredients in all the food in the store (preservatives and sugar all work against the good bacteria) than most people are on medications whether it’s antibiotics or other meds they have to take daily that can effect their vowels movements and cause. Instigation or effect gut health. If I don’t take a pre or pro biotic in severely constipated and the only other thing that works is miralax so I would rather do the probiotics than miralax every other day. This isn’t a placebo effect, I can’t trick my body to be constipated or cramp up and why would I want to spend money on something that I don’t need. I’m on a very limited income but make sure I have the money for them to be comfortable. I have since been changing my diet too, I am a naturally thin person, very thin but not healthy, I’m genetically thin, don’t work out and ate junk for so many years because high metabolism I guess but now realize eating healthy isn’t just for those who want to lose weight but it’s important for everyone if you want to feel your best and stay illness free. I started to drink plain kefir, fermented things like kombucha and so on.
Well, I agree. It isn’t one size fits all, everyone’s biome is different! And any reputable shops will tell you that, and any doctor will tell you that- don’t know what’s it’s like in other countries- but doctors where I am certainly aren’t benefiting from recommending probiotics to patients. We’ve come a long way. There are now probiotics available that come from human source and not cow or pig which has even more promising claims. We have now tried fecal transplant- all in the name of helping to regulate a damaged biome- and positive clinical results coming forth each day. I agree proceed with caution- don’t look at it as a one size fits all, don’t put all your hope into a simple pill hoping that it will change your life, absolutely rule out ALL possible other issues before going a holistic route. I don’t see probiotics becoming strictly regulated by the fda any time soon, and that SHOULD be taken into consideration. But at what point does millions of anecdotes/personal experience about the same thing start to signify something positive that we should really be looking into more? It’s too many people- receiving no financial benefit from sharing their experiences too try to scare people away from it.
Hard disagree here. Probiotics have drastically improved my stomach issues and even helped my mood. There’s well documented research here. Sounds like he doesn’t know what he’s talking about here.

Then, what once was expert information is now deemed as foolish and misinformation. And we forget that the knowledge we once knew is actually the stilts we use to understand what we know now.
Probiotics can be very important for your health and was even recommended by my gastro-enterologist doctor. Reason being that inflamed intestines have a low variety or good gut and intestinal bacteria. Probiotics are basically exactly what counters this issue.
Cristhian where do you think the bacteria in the capsules comes from? Its not from thin air, i can tell you. This doctor knows fuck-all if he thinks probiotics dont have any place.
Always consult your personal physician...after a blood work panel your Dr will inform you of your vitamin count...social media drs are not your personal Dr..
I'm gonna keep taking my pre and probiotics...OTC, if I don't, I'm not pooping regularly. I drink plenty of water and eat pretty well, prebiotics help me, and I take one's geared towards women health as well.
I actually did feel like taking probiotic supplements helped me recover from digestive issues that I had been having for several weeks after having antibiotics. I wasn't really trying anything else at that moment so I don't think it could have been something else instead. It didn't take long after I started taking them for it to get better. Is there any logic to that or was that still just a coincidence/placebo?
No, it did actually work. Once these new probiotics enter the intestines they can start to multiply if you take them with fibre. You don't know which probiotic is deficient so you have to try multiple strains. You can take a fecal test but that is a thousand dollars.
Well after antibiotics everything has been wiped out. So a probiotic is better than nothing. But consider using food next time like yogurt ( even nondairy yogurts have probiotics) and fermented food like kimchi etc. to replace those probiotics and the food is nourishing. Additionally it’s cheaper than buying expensive powder counterparts.
Kefir is the one you should be getting and drinking, that is the best. It cured most of my stomach trouble not caused by horrible anxiety and even helped some of the anxiety go away
That's because your existing biome in your 'ocean' gets wiped out when you take antibiotics and when you take prebiotic supplements after wards you are restarting mircobiome desert. Someone who already have a gut teaming with an existing microbial population, taking a pill will only get whatever in that pill be competed out by the existing biome
No, i expect the suit to look differently when i put it on as opposed to someone else wearing it. I expect my microbiome to react differently to the probiotic as well. Water's a very good example of this: we all grow and live different even though we consume the same building block every single day.
The benefits of probiotic is within the strain it contains. Each bacterial strain in a probiotic product has a specific effect (e.g initiate anti-inflammatory response by lining the intestinal cells or whichever effect it may be). The strain must be extensively studied too and have strong evidence base. You can't just market a probiotic with 15 strains in it and expect it to work. Some effects of each strain can antagonize other strains.
@@komalagrawal2842get the probiotic with the most amount of strains. Not the cheap ones that only have 1 or 2 strains. You want to get as many strains as possible, like 20+. Take lots of pills. It works.
Introduction of necessary strains can make a huge difference. Stronger varietals as well might be needed. Remember, it’s a numbers game amongst many species.
you don't have to fill out the hundred questions about your medical history before you get seen? maybe you should find a different doctor... just a suggestion.
Well, having basic health history information is a good start for diagnosis and treatments. That's why you *also* speak with your doctor after filling out the paperwork.
Micro biome is a growing field of biology that’s super interesting, a great book is “I contain multitudes” by Ed Young, I’m not a biologist but this book makes it easy to read and understand. Would highly recommend if anyone is interested in learning more about the micro biome.
I am just wondering how you re-populate your gut after needing vancomycin for severe c diff infection? Or, for that matter, how do you treat any acute diarrhea resulting from antibiotic use? Is there a prescription probiotic? Or do you think everyone should have a transplant from a human source. This is a very serious question
I saw your comment, it might help if I tell you that fecal transplant cures microbiom, talk to your GI doctor and see if you qualify for transplant. It is free and works faster than probiotics. So technically they do enema on you to empty the entire bowel then they put a small amount of poo from healthy donors into you. Recovery period is 3 days without pain.
It's not like walking into a shop and getting a suit. It's like walking into a shop and finding the right cloth. Depending on you certain colonies form more than the others in your gut. So don't be afraid to use them.
I think this short missed the part where he said probiotics are good in specific cases. After having colin surgery because of peritonitis after a break in my intestines and needing emergency surgery to survive, I need probiotics in order for my body to process food. It’s very simple based on what happens when I run out and don’t get to the store for replacements….and my board certified dr’s agree.
I think kimchi, Sauerkraut (& other fermented food) are called prebiotic not probiotic. Probiotics are healthy bacteria & the prebiotic is their food. So you supply your gut bacteria with good food for them to thrive & multiply
I was on IV vancomycin for a necrotic infection and then I went on another more targeted antibiotic after that and when I got out of hospital I was constantly getting sick, I even ended up with a group G strep infection that reoccured twice. My surgical team recommended I take a course of probiotics and after about 4 daily doses, I stopped getting sick all the time.
Bacteria double every 20 minutes. It's not like you are adding sugar to the ocean, it's like you are adding fish to the ocean. Over time it establishes and thrives.
It can work for a select group of people with specific conditions. If you feel it works for you, great. Anecdotal evidence is not often translated to wide population
@@DrKaran That’s entirely the point. Specific strains are documented to support specific conditions. Using the “teaspoon of sugar in an ocean” doesn’t work in this scenario.
Actually my doctor tells me to take them, I'm on methotrexate and biological injection medication and these are important to help my gut, a long with folic acid. I had a doctor before, old school who didn't even believe in probiotic folic acid, he said its a drop in the ocean too but he cost me a bone in my wrist, nearly my teeth and thinning hair, once on the supplement it seriously helped me and have much improved health since. Just be careful, there was even a doctor against triple vaccines for babies before, only he fake the science and sold the single doses to parents instead and made a lot of money. He can't practise here now but still does in the states.
As someone with crohns disease I can say probiotic supplements have helped me. I get less of a reaction when I eat foods that don't agree with me and just helps with overall digestion
I have been suffering from severe ibs and related gi issues. I never took Probiotics for over 3 years. I started taking them and my gi issues are better now.
Medications works this way. So do magica gloves. One size pill fits all sizes, genders and ages. Just don't take a one size fits all probiotic because now it's a problem. Pills are fine...
This is why we shouldnt listen to any doctor,in the end,its opinion based advice based on how they learn those things. Probiotics did help a lot of people including me
Bacteria grows exponentially, so yes the amount you add is small, leave it 5 hours and It will be that amount ^ 10 Plus bacteria can take your DNA on that simbiosis, they are open to that
That same logic can be applied to regulated antibiotics. An antibiotic is prescribed for any and everyone that has an infection, but everybody's body is different. To answer the question, yes, people do go into a shop (Doctors' office) and take whatever is prescribed to them believing that they will work, although it's not specifically tailored to their DNA, microbiome, gender, or any other characteristic that needs to be considered.
I suffer from constipation even when I eat my 25 grams of fiber. I stopped taking it for a few days and seems like the constipation is back. I’ll do what works for me.
I have extremely bad ibs, last few years(20 year old, extremely fit male). Buscopan seems to be the only thing to stop spasms but probiotics seem to help but 100% don’t fix the problem. I have very bad pains sporadically in the mornings and if I don’t eat regularly my stomach fills with gas. No doctors have been able to help and I am wondering what your advice is ?
I hope you are feeling better. I had IBS and what helped was practiing fasting. Look up autophagy for gut repair. There is science to back this up. It increases cell turn over so it promotes healing. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try. I wish you the best and hope this helps.
I had severe IBS but thankfully my gastroenterologist treated it with diet. It’s been 25 years since I stopped eating beef and pork and deep fried foods, and I also eat more fiber. I very rarely have a flare up. But keep in mind IBS is stress induced so sleep is very important, also prayer & meditation. As it pertains to this video, one thing I cannot tolerate is probiotics. It’s a mystery, I have tried several kinds over the years until my doctor finally told me to stop taking them since I eliminate regularly.
as a dr i can say clearly his ocean analogy is BS. There are some very good meta analyses you can search up. Probiotics arent a panacea however they definitely do seem to do something - the degree of their benefit isnt conclusive but theyre cheap and broadly not harmful, he is correct though in stating that theyre unregulated so often whats advertised isnt what you get. A better analogy is if you place a few new hundred cod in the ocean can you expect to come back in 100 years and find more cod and less salmon - maybe.
I have SUCH a difficult time explaining this when people come in to my store and ask for probiotics. I manage a CVS and they always seem to think that taking probiotics will suddenly solve all their issues and I'm like speak with your doctor man...

I usually use probiotics when I have heartburn or feel nauseous, it almost always helps.

Sounds like he doesn’t know what he’s talking about here.
then please explain that as soon as I started taking it. my body feels better and I've stopped puking EVERY MORNING which was happening EVERY DAY FOR YEARS . please explain that
That's because you have a medical condition. He's talking about people who take them for no reason. Most people don't need them.

Experts are just relaying information to the best of their understanding. Sometimes, we gain a better understanding of the situation when new knowledge becomes available. Then, what once was expert information is now deemed as foolish and misinformation. And we forget that the knowledge we once knew is actually the stilts we use to understand what we know now.

Someone who already have a gut teaming with an existing microbial population, taking a pill will only get whatever in that pill be competed out by the existing biome
you might have been the one that it actually fit, but his point is that it's not going to work for everybody, because not everybody else is like you.
Yakult helped my bloating! Can see my 6 pack now.

I think kimchi, Sauerkraut (& other fermented food) are called prebiotic not probiotic. Probiotics are healthy bacteria & the prebiotic is their food. So you supply your gut bacteria with good food for them to thrive & multiply
