    LYRICS
I hope that our few remaining friends
Give up on trying to save us
I hope we come out with a fail-safe plot
To piss off the dumb few that forgave us
I hope the fences we mended
Fall down beneath their own weight
And I hope we hang on past the last exit
I hope it's already too late
And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
    Someday burns down
And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away
And I never come back to this town again
In my life, I hope I lie
And tell everyone you were a good wife
    And I hope you die
    I hope we both die
I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow
I hope it bleeds all day long
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises
We're pretty sure they're all wrong
I hope it stays dark forever
I hope the worst isn't over
And I hope you blink before I do
And I hope I never get sober
And I hope when you think of me years down the line
You can't find one good thing to say
And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out
You'd stay the hell out of my way
    I am drowning
There is no sign of land
You are coming down with me
    Hand in unlovable hand
    And I hope you die
    I hope we both die

I like how I listen to this and my ears go "Yeah this is No Children." And then you say "1 2 3 and" and my brain goes "Oh oh no THIS is No Children"

I showed this to my dad, who's been married for 40 or so years, and he had some interesting insight to the song. "I get that he's talking about divorce, but I think it's more about the loss of friendship" he said. In his mind, the separating yourself from a spouse is less traumatic, so to speak, because after a while, you've pretty much gotten used to your other half's shit. And barring any active attempts to harm the other or themselves, you stop registering the shitness, as it's just part of the commitment you've made to the other person. Some things just don't get better, or even worked on. And that's just life. However, he went on to tell me, the amount of pain you get from this tells you it's not about that. It's the confrontation with the concept that there's something unsalvageable about you and the other person, and there's nothing to do but separate. And this could apply to any relationship, not just a married couple.

So true, my ex ended up with my best friend at the time, ive seen him like 5 times since then and seen her about the same amount and i only miss mine as his friendship, an ex is just that but a lost friend will always be that as well.
Your dad seems like a wise man

When I was a young teen, a girl I was in adoration of at summer church camp took me under a tree alone and sang this to me. The moment I got home from that week of camp I ran to steal it from the internet and dive into your worlds.
It will forever be one of my favorite memories.
I'm 32 now and will always be a huge fan.

I think the instrumental is much more jazzy, but I agree, I thought it was gonna be like the intro, which would have been even wilder.

I once felt sad and confused listening to this as it played on Adult Swim's Moral Orel... then later I shouted along with it at the top of my lungs racing alone down the interstate highway from the city my wife and I Iived in to the town where I grew up... and then later I shouted along with it at the top of my lungs with a view of the stage from the front row of a raised seating area in a tiny split level venue.

This seriously has been my all-time favourite song ever since I first heard it. I was never 'divorced' in a legal way. Split with women in all kind of ways. But just the well-brought, easy-to-buy, overwhelmingly honest emotion of the song I definitely can relate to regarding many other parts of life

As a teenager with divorced parents this song hits so hard. I recently walked out of my fathers house and I'm never going back and I've definitely been listening much more recently especially since the time my father called me a cunt. This song is so good.

all the live intros since he started doing this song as "jazz no children" before playing the song proper are SO funny. the times he talks about the sorry couples who ask him to play this at their wedding and he's like "no, thank you, but i'll play it for your divorce attorney"... i will never do his intro jazz no children banter justice know that he mixes up the banter every time and its even better every time. you'll just have to see them live for yourself :-)
