- We've been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to CZcams!
Watch The Mountain Goat’s Tiny Desk concert from 2010: www.npr.org/2010/01/03/122106...
Stephen Thompson | January 3, 2010
The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle keeps getting quieter, as his raw early bedroom recordings and bare-knuckle anthems continue to make way for polished ballads that whisper, seethe and mourn. The recent The Life of the World to Come at first feels strangely timid, but as its crushingly sad words sink in ("I am a flightless bird / There'll be no more after me," and so on), it hits slowly but deeply - less a punch than a gnawing ache.
In person, Darnielle's twitchy, nervous energy serves his fearless songwriting well: He exudes gentility and good humor in conversation, but his performances are utterly committed, with intensity that infuses his screams and whispers alike. In this solo Tiny Desk Concert, his four songs fit nearly into distinct categories: new and quiet ("Hebrews 11:40"), new and loud ("Psalms 40:2"), old and quiet ("Color in Your Cheeks," from All Hail West Texas), and old and loud ("Going to Georgia," from Zopilote Machine). It's no surprise that all four approaches serve him well.
Also, it should be noted that Darnielle drew a large and admiring crowd for this show, even though it appears in the video that it was attended exclusively by a photographer and the giant blond head of Lars Gotrich. Trust me: We wouldn't have missed this one for anything.
Set List
"Color in Your Cheeks"
"Hebrews 11:40"
"Psalms 40:2"
"Going to Georgia"

all mountain goats songs are also in 240p
I swear this use to be up already, and not in 240p.

@@natesimp42 Definitely was, you're right
@@natesimp42 but would it be "From the Archives" if it wasn't
_some musicians prefer lower sound quality rather than hi fi. Slamming power chords as loud as you can fits the bill_
oh to be an npr employee in 2010 ane have john darnielle belting 'HE HAS FIXED HIS SIIIGN IN THE SKYYY' in your face from 6 feet away
Sign me up lol
God tell me about it.
T O K E E P T H E B E A C O N F L A S H I N G
Bring the Mountain Goats back to Tiny Desk, please please please!
🤞
Do it! Please
give em a four way
More Mountain Goats!
Imagine John directly asking you what song you wanted to hear, I think my head would explode
The 240p feels nostalgic too. I thought my eyes were going bad...
It feels appropriate given the fidelity of All Hail West Texas.
Their song "This Year" has gotten me through every year since 2013, no joke.
same but like, 2007
2015 here, you're not alone. Although I doubt I have one more in me right now.
Keep ur head up. There are places for us to hide. We will make it@@masansr
Hey, same. It's one of the ones I always go back to like a mantra when I go through depression and dark times.
Is right.
It brings me comfort to see that Going To Georgia is played at the top of the neck. Like, oh he played the same, boring chords when he was my age too. What a relief.
A LOT of his older work is like that. Even jabs at it in You Were Cool.
It has been twelve years and I still consistently come here to find comfort.
That's why I'm here, now!
Howdy partner
Lol I’d love to see him back on here now but cramming the whole band in there. This series was basically made for John though, he always kills solo. The man is just an eternal vibe
Cue Peter Peter Hughes knocking someone out with his bass or throwing one of the bookshelves over
Why do I love the internet so much? One reason. I get rabbit-holed to the Mountain Goats everyday is a new day of Goat... thx for this upload.
another wonderful show from Midwestern emo john oliver
after a lockdown induced family argument and kitchen accidents this is saving my sunday evening
John is just the best person in the whole world. Who else could make a mistake on tiny desk and still be absolutely perfect
John Darnielle is a real troubadour--it's all about the words but his musicality is brilliant as well. What a combination of humility and intensity in this guy. If you have not seen their video of This Year, do it right now. It's my anthem for 2021. Maybe it's yours too.
I see but ONE mountain goat
🌜maya🌛 You must first believe in the Mountain Goats before you can SEE the Mountain Goats.
We are ALL mountain goats on this blessed day
I believe that he once said that he started by himself but wanted it so that if and when he got a band it wouldn’t be ‘John Darnielle and.....’
I guess its a reverse Panic! At the disco situation lol
Awesome to finally see this on the official youtube! You should definitely bring the Mountain Goats back for a full band session with some of their new songs
They had a better version a few years back but took it down for some reason
this video put color in my cheeks
Joris van Dijk me too! (Nice pink moon avatar!)
This man literally has my heartstrings in his hands everything he picks up that guitar and continues singing with all the passion those little lungs can muster. That's the music of a man that knows pain and how it feels to be excluded and downtrodden. Keep On Brother. Keep on. And don't let anyone tell you that you aren't making a difference.
i've been watching this tiny desk performance on another youtube channel since last year, and i always went back to watch. glad to see it's finally on npr's channel :)
YES
I totally understand John Darnielle's decision to more or less disown 'Going to Georgia'. But, man, if it isn't a gorgeous song.
Graham B Amen.
What's the reason behind that?
@@masansr I believe he's said he doesn't like the themes of threatening self-harm based on the actions of another person. The image of a hopeless romantic at rock bottom with a 'colt 45 with a broken safety catch' isn't something John want's to romanticize, and I think he felt this song leaned a little too far into that territory
Also I think as soon as Laura Jane Grace covered it it belonged to her
@@feandwine also the implied themes of domestic violence
I'm gonna make it through this year if it kills meeeee
Gotta love Darnielle and the Mountain Goats. They had a show once in Stockholm. As a Finn I don´t go to Sweden unless I really have to. That time I really had to.
there couldn't have been a better time to bring this back
0:20 - *_Color in Your Cheeks_* (2:52)
3:13 - *_Hebrews _**_11:40_* (5:49)
5:55 - *_Psalms 40:2_* (8:54)
9:57 - *_Going to Georgia_* (12:35)
NOTE: The second song played here is _'Hebrews __11:40__'_ .
'11:40' is part of the title, _not_ the intended timestamp, though CZcams doesn't know the difference.
Awesome
thanks fam
This takes you back to being young and naive, and you reconnect with all the wonderful things about that time of life. Thinking I knew what life had in store even though I knew I had no idea how it would unfold. It was a long time ago, but still feels like yesterday.
IVE BEEN LISTENING TO THIS VIDEO FOR 10 YEARS!!!??? so glad you guys chose this to reupload!!!
Just waiting for vlogbrothers to show up in the comments
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY
I wonder if they know how big of a fan John is. And how many new fans he has created for them haha.
Being a Nerdfighter made me a mountain goats fan
Anne Harper npr or The Mountain Goats?
Ditto
I love how there's someone just on her computer mid-email in the front haha... those were the days to be an npr employee
also, I remember taking heed to the time that John messes up in the song. I was waiting for that. If I remember correctly, he also had to re-start on the second song, but that may have been cut out. It's actually really inspiring to see someone make mistakes.
John so badass he just casually forgets the best line he ever wrote.
I keep coming back . "I have two big hands and a heart pumping blood and a 1967 colt 45 with a busted safety catch" very cool.
"going to Georgia" was beautiful
John playing live is what made tmg get so big he just brings something extra live
It’s the shouting about 7 lines of the song in one chord that sells me on it
absolutely without a doubt THE definitive version of Color in Your Cheeks
TMG have been carrying me through the quarantine so this has incredible timing
The speed he can play the guitar at the end of psalms 40:2 has me perplexed as to why he’s so underrated to this day
Good God, this gentleman is feeling it
love love the mountain goats !
This was the first tiny desk concert I ever saw (someone else has released it), and it got me both into the mountain goats and tiny desk. Glad this is finally being properly released!
Did you become a nerdfighter before or after seeing it?
I first heard of the Mountain Goats through John Green - that trope is true I guess - but this was one of the first times that I really started to love them in their own right. This band’s crazy important to me - they’re the reason I picked up guitar a few years, and one of my very first goals was to learn every song in this set :)
If you're up for some rap, Noname and Tank and the Bangas did 2 of the best tiny desks I've ever seen if you still haven't checked those out
i gotta say i REALLY appreciate those hand shots
Sweet Baby Jesus, Psalms 40:2 gave me goosebumps.
And the sound quality is great like always 👍. Thank You NPR team 🙏
I should be at a Mountain Goats show right now, but instead there's a pandemic so I'm in bed watching this video.
I always forget we used to use potatoes to film things in the ‘00s
historic moment
I always thought it was Macon County, GA... definitely NC
the Songwriter of the century
I've been waiting so long for this one, thank you so much!

Loving it!
I love his voice so much... whoa

This was definately on youtube a few years ago, this concert was what introduced me to the mountain goats.
I appreciate the archives so much
Get the Mountain Goats back in there!!
hebrews 11:40 in this format is so good
Geez I really needed this.
I'm a consistent person. Not reliable, but consistent.
This had always been my favorite tiny desk. Esp 10 years ago
I NEEDED THIS
Wow.. ten years and John is still putting together some really incredible stuff. This man just refuses to run out of steam, huh?
Like a time capsule 🙏😊
i am so happy this exists
A little Sunday isolation music. Gracias👍✌️😊🙏🏼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶🎵🎶🎵
The content I signed up for
This was right before I saw him for the first time! That's crazy.
Legendary.
Bring the whole band back
Love you John
Thank you for posting this! Love so much.
Probably my favourite human of all time. The intro before colour in your cheeks made me laugh out loud
FINALLY I LOVE YOU NPR
GOATED
AS I CROSS THE MACON COUNTY LINE GOING TO GEORGIAAAAAA
Doing my guy John right. Love the TDC.
What a travesty that the Mountain Goats have not played a tiny desk concert in the last 12+ years
The best!
still so good and worth revisiting, you should have tmg back on when you can
Yay
He needs to do it again! Please make a new one!
I like how John doesn't skip a beat when the NPR employee requested Going to Georgia
this version of psalm 40:2 is the most unhinged I have seen, 10/10
It’s so good
👌👌👌👌👌amazing

I have the HD download of this performance...why don't you guys?
I suppose it's the thought that counts...
so it was out in HD, but they dont have it lol. sad.
Yeah we had 1080p back in 2010 lol. What gives?
Upload it yourself
I know it's a video.. but the audio is fine. So the "p" don't matter. Just sit back and relax chief. Enjoy.
