    No one's ever going to say, "I remember when these guys used to be..." Darnielle and his co-conspirators just continually make fantastic, folky, heart-felt music, and his fans are some of the nicest people I've ever met.

      @@DerBieso1I had a similar experience. I went to a tMG concert in 1994 and at first was thinking WTF is this? Afterwards I could not get the rhythms out of my head, which started a quest to try to find their music at record shops, something that was impossibly difficult back then ❤

    I am by far no singing professional but I remember in grade school, somewhere between grade 1-5 my choir teacher would say when your singing to end the s's really quick because otherwise it makes a "sss" sound that whistles and I love how John Darnielle just embraces the s haha. I love this song

      If you try to sing along it's really hard because the emphasis is on the first 1/2 beat not on the first beat, so the "s"s give you a good rythmic crutch

    when it comes to music, it's always what people WANT it to mean. You want to judge, you say it's about something dumb. if you want it to be stupid, then it has no meaning. But for this song I feel like its about what people needed to be. When I first heard it it was a warm song about complete strangers in a bar, alone, wary, and troubled. But They're just together, not worrying about whats going on in their lives, if only for a few hours. to me it's the ballad of rag tag misfits.

  • @mushikamouse
    @mushikamouse Před 12 lety +1

    @Hl212345 this sounds OK playing along with John:
    Verses:
    C#m G# A B / E G# A B
    Chorus:
    A B E A / E A E A B
    (Except for the first and last A's, all of the chorus chords are on the 7th fret. The E's are like x799xxx - he's mostly just hitting the bass strings - and the A's that follow them are like x7799x, keep the barre but move the other fingers up one string.)
    Bridge:
    C#m G# A B (3x) / E B
    The end is the bridge followed by E (1 bar) E (1 strum).

    'Drugs addicts' say the song about drugs because it is about drugs. Why people who believe it is not about drugs think that their belief somehow makes that true - an obvious, flawed tautology - is a bit harder to understand.
    One 'drugs addict' in particular, the writer of the song, says that the song is about drugs. But it's about other things too - the real world is never that simple - like meeting new people & offering them hospitality, friendship, & front-row seats to all of your problems.

      Its all barre chords
      It goes C#m (same position as u would do for Bm but two frets up), G# (same as F#, but two frets up), A major (played like G# but one fret up), B major (Two frets above A), then E major Played like a B major barre chord would NORMALLY be played, but with the barre on the 7th fret. And then i think it goes back to G# then A, then B and the chorus is just A, E and B at the end. Most tabs out there have the right chords, but you have to find the version of the chord that is a barre chord
