Thank you for watching!
Sheryl and Paul
What a great channel. So classy. Which is rare these days.
That chain has gone thru hell and back. And then back again. LOL
Enjoyed the Chesapeake boat show episode. The Cape Hatteras experience of running out of fuel coming out of a narrow channel is enough to shock any experienced sailor. If you ever have enough time to do a special episode, I would recommend, you do a series on the Chesapeake Bay and it’s tributaries. You could hit all the sailing gunk holes, towns and waterside restaurants River by river. It would be a popular video series. With your draft, you could do the Bohemia, Sasafras, Baltimore, Chester River the largest Manta Ray breeding ground, Sait Michaels, the Wye River, the Choptank, Piankitank, Rapahanick and the Nauticus Maritime Museum in Norfolk Va. like I said, a series. Now that’s a lot of rivers. I know I missed a few. Can’t wait for the Pacific. Are you guys Shellbacks and Bluenose Qualified?
Exciting! Don’t go too fast...if you stay in the east of French Polynesia , you can actually take two seasons without much risk...
Will be watching your Coppercoat future...we just applied it too. Rebecca on SV Brick House
Jimmy Cantler's! One of our favorites! Love watching your adventures. Gotta try the Maryland crabs with apple cider vinegar next time.
Love the videos! Happy New Year! Can’t wait to watch this year.
I love watching and learning from you.
Thank you for making these videos
Great video!!! On the edge of my seat for the next episode!
Happy New Year Paul and Sheryl. So great to see what you guys are up to when you are away. Hope to see you again soon!
Hi Paul & Sheryl, thanks for sharing another adventure - always inspirational. Cheers, Gavin & Amanda
Can't wait for next episode... :-)
Good luck on your journey to the Pacific!!!
Happy New Year Paul & Sheryl! Thanks for the video lots of great content. Crazy to see a stock chain on that lovely boat be so bad after a year :( Take care and fair winds!
Awesome video😍
Thanks for letting us all enjoy your adventure.... Well done
More adventures to come! So glad you are enjoying the videos, Jim.
As far as I am concerned, you guys are the originals and the best. Hope you make it all the way down under in the year or two ahead. Fair winds.
I like it when you show the problems that you have, sailings not all fun and games and makes it look real.
Happy New Year Paul and Cheryl. You’ve come a long way since your C&C days. Beautiful Southerly! My wife and I went to a talk/session you did at the Bedford Institute (in Halifax) some 25 years ago. I was impressed then, and still am. Your book sits on our bookshelf. :)
Another fantastic episode guys 👍🏽 your the sailor version of Bob Ross haha 😂😎
Hey! I had the pleasure of meeting you when you were finishing up your refit of your Southerly at Port Annapolis Marina. After our conversation, I followed you and am thoroughly enjoying your videos. I still got a lot of binge-watching to do!
As a kid in early 60s I lived in Reedville. The smell could knock you over. I always wondered it still stunk as bad. But after living there a few months....didnt smell it at all. Nice hardworking town.
Great video and look forward to seeing you guys at the Toronto Boat Show. Already booked our tickets for your seminar 🤓
I haven't had blue crabs in ages. Mmmm. Old Bay, Beer, Crabs. Nothing like it. Smooth sailing
Right you are, Tom! Blue crabs with a nice cold beer is such a treat.
I remember that gale. I was anchored all the way in the back of Spa Creek and grabbed a mooring for the night because it was way too tight to drop enough chain for the wind.
Enjoyed your work in sailing, technique, and the Videos. The sailing show in Annapolis you mentioned in another video as piqued my interest in making it up there this October.
Man thanks for mentioning/demonstrating the Grog Knots App.....I downloaded it...and I couldn't be more satisfied....
You two are inspirational, love your videos, 👍from a fellow Canadian
Thanks for your kind words, S/V Lusca. Always great to hear from a fellow Canadian 🇨🇦❤️
Ultimate lifestyle as long as your health is ok. And money coming in.
Nice video
Thanks for sharing the grog knot's app. I downloaded it!
Driving a semi through and acrossed the chesapeke bay bridge is very much like driving a boat on water ^.^
Great video and look forward to seeing the next year of videos. I sailed my new boat(new to me but not new) back from Haverstraw , NY to Fort Myers last fall and had to tuck in at the Hampton Marina downtown to let hurricane Micheal pass, it went right over us with winds up to 65 mph. Thanks again for a great video, Best, Capt. Ron!
Yikes! Strong winds. Glad you found a safe haven and had a successful voyage south. Hope to see you on the water.
@@DistantShoresTV Yeah, I was surprised how much with it still had after crossing the country. But it was not bad downtown there as there is a 4 story parking garage just in front of our slip.
Ahhhh, the smell of Reedville. You took me back. Lived there in the early 90's. The locals said it "smelled like money" Hahahahaha - I had a different definition.
Nothing like the smell of a pressure kettle full of cooked Pogy to choke a fella awake. 😂😂😂 😲🤢
Wonderful video. As a relatively new subscriber, I appreciate your inclusion of the technical, scenic, as well as social aspects of cruising - informative as well as enjoyable.
Your comment made our day, Ron! We work hard to create a blend of technical, inspirational, beautiful and travelogue so are so glad you enjoy this in our videos. We appreciate your comment, Thanks!
Nice video folks. I found my brand new bait cutting scissors were pressed into service dealing with king crab legs. They were so good at avoiding mess and getting maximum meat that I now need another 2 pairs.
Great idea, Phil! Thanks for this tip.
A cheap pair of small Channel Lock pliers works well also.
I had to buy the wife her own pair. She kept smacking her finger with the mallet. 😂
Been there done that in my 88 C&C 30mk2. Fun area and good food.
Right you are, Lorne!
Hi Paul and Sheryl. Great video as always .....Darryl
Hey, Darryl. Great to hear from you. Happy New Year!
What kind of anchor chain went bad in a year? What kind/brand of chain did you replace it with? What a bummer to have it go bad in a year!!! Good demo on using the fid. -Rebecca on SV Brick House
Hello, big fan from France. The quality of your videos is awesome. Could you share what type of camera you usually use ? Can’t wait for next episode !
What about wind indicator inspection? It will be great to see chart plotter in your anchoring position. Good luck!
🙂👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Recently discovered you. Great vids, have you ever thought about numbering them? Keep safe!
Wouldn't exactly say the antenna scraping the bridge would be classified at "HITTING A BRIDGE", but yeah, you made me watch to see... That chain was ridiculous!
If it was a power line I'd definitely call it a hit. In baseball a touch is a hit and no amount of arguing is going to get you out of it.
I did the same in port vila with the antenna touching the power lines (Rubber coated, thank god) shit myself , Extra hot day so the lines sagged 2 meters lower then the chart had said.
9:08 Bummer....at "Wet Willy's" 'ya get a Willy Whacker for 'yer Crabs😂
Happy New Year P & S ! How close to " real speed " was the swing keel lift when filmed ? Always a pleasure watching....
Its about 2 minutes to raise the keel @Peter Torrey... glad you enjoyed it :-)
Nice video. As asked below, the chain looks pretty poor for only one years use. Any ideas or comments as to why this happened?
At the very end of the video, you showed a short peak of the gale. What I noticed was that your downwind lower shroud was very loose, is this normal on your boat?
Cheers and Happy New Year.
Not quite hitting the bridge as described in title little miss leading but how ever interesting film and pleased the boat was not damaged in any way
Thanks for your comment 2 C Waves. Glad you enjoyed the video.
No mention of whether there was ANY damage from tickling the bridge?
Hey Guys. Just wanted to wish you a great New year filled with a abundance of happiness and safe sailing. Im off to the Sundance film festival 20 yrs Going. cheers. xx
Thanks Andy - that would be great to see Sundance! Enjoy
@@DistantShoresTV Will do all the best.
that chain isnt wasted just yet. only surface rust. it can be chemically treated to remove the rust and put a type of anodized finish on it to protect it but if you dont do that yourself it may just be cheaper to buy 400lbs of new chain.
id say that was the tide of the century for that town.
2:00: What make of chain is that? Looks like 10mm. 2:44: Another method if you have all chain is to tie a length of sized Dyneema as the bitter end and hang an SS breadknife beside it. Two passes and you're done, hopefully remembering the anchor float for retrieval later. 7:42: Looks like half the GTA clubs in 2017, 2019 and (alas, probably) 2020.
Great job... do you do your own editing?
Thanks yes we do all our editing - roughly 30-40 hours to edit this one... longer if there are animations in it like the next one I'm working on :-)
If you answered the question about your chain, I couldn't find it. You bought it in England and may have been furnished by the builder. In Europe, U;ve heard that a brand of Italian chain is good. Of course, North American made chain is going to be good. Mine is over 20 years old (I know, ridiculous) and the galvanization is still fine. With Discovery Yachts' excellent reputation, I'm sure that they made good on the chain and have stopped buying from that source.
Your use of the lifting keel and furling main could use more visibility in your regular videos. :)
Thanks for your comment G11713. We love to hear what viewers would like to see more of. Very helpful!
Just curious, with a boat that expensive, wouldn't you want to spend the money and buy stainless steel rope? Also, as an alternative, why wouldn't you want to have about 50-100ft of stainless steel chain and a high end anchor rope spliced to that? Would the windless not be able to wind up the rope?
Good vid ya'll.
Is the copper paint the kind that is not harmful to reefs and corals?
Its one of the best since the copper is bonded to the boat and doesn't "ablate" or fall off the hull at all :-)
:)
Where was the chain from and what brand, I’m doing my homework on anchor chain.
Simon Hantler , great Question
Probably China
From what I have learnt the best bet for chain is Maggi from Italy. Be interested to know what brand discovery use.
Great video. Apologies, what is the app that you use for splicing and knots?
Its Called "Animated Knots by Grog" - by www.animatedknots.com available on Android and iOS Enjoy!
@@DistantShoresTV Oops, it was in your extended description, thank you! I had missed it!
@@DistantShoresTV Great web site!!!
Great idea, David! Thanks for this suggestion.
@@davidbrayshaw3529 great ideas, I'll definitely use it!
I think I’d return the chain to Discovery, via airmail, with postage to be paid by the recipient.....
I like your thinking! ;-)
The old Chinese chain trick , be careful of the old Chinese zinc anode trick , thats a bugger
I would think that the anchor chain on a sailboat would be either stainless or galvanized. The galvanized coating should last more than one year.
Most people recommend galvanized as its much cheaper and doesn't have crevice corrosion, but there seems to be a great variety in galvanizing quality. Our was galvanized but the coating didn't last nearly as well as others have in the past with our cruising style.
@@DistantShoresTV Thanks for the quick reply. That chain is very corroded for only one year of saltwater use. I would have expected a galvanized chain to exhibited better anti-corrosion properties in that time span.
Just give those crabs to that bulldog wife and she can crack the shells for you
The old joke is that one could lose weight picking and eating blue crabs. A lot of work for not a lot of meat.
That chain was seriously bad. Did you claim against it?
Not the best way to pick crabs...oh well
Can't believe the state of your chain after one year. Southerly/Discovery should be ashamed given the price of their vessels. These are suppose to be top end cruisers and I would be spitting feathers and demand full replacement with the right quality of chain. Not a great advertisement for the brand.
Also.... to put it in perspective I have 2013 46 foot boat with 12mm galvanised chain and anchor everywhere and it looks as good as the day we bought the boat and it's a Beneteau!
Hey Paul and Sheryl.. We have been long time followers and we were wondering if you are going to hit any spots down in Florida so we can meet up. Paul please PM me on Cruisers Forum. mholtzberg Thanks... Looking forward to it.
I see "We hit a bridge!"... Wait WHO hit a bridge? Distant Shores? Nope, if anyone didn't hit a bridge, they didn't. Click bait. Maybe an antenna rubbed. But even that would have been calculated. Click bait. Naughty naughty.
Hit a bridge??? 2020 and already reverting to clickbait.
How the F would you ever attempt to go under a bridge with inches to spare on a high tide?!?! Bad seamanship and pi## poor planning.
clickbait!
hmmm perhaps but we did actually hit a bridge... :-)
Too many ads on your channel. Real shame. Ruins the video.
