Ep77 | Everything you wanted to know about the Annapolis boat show (and more!)

  • The Annapolis sailboat show has more boats in the water than any other. It cleverly splits the motorboat show (happens the week before) with the sailboat show so the vendors stay but the boats all change over. It means there's plenty to see and actually there are also many other boats on docks nearby that you can be taken to see. For example Blue Water Yachts didn't have a boat there but they could take you to see a Hylas nearby which the new yachts are based on.
    But of course the Annapolis sailboat show isn't just about the boats! It's full on party time for the whole 5 days with events running every night. We even went to a party in a chandlers!
    So in this episode we have a look around a Garcia and hop aboard one of our patrons boats, a lovely passport 456. We will have a special extra video showing the whole tour and also looking at the amazing Passport 615 at the show.
    There will be lots of extra videos showing what we've seen at the show, including a tour of an Outbound, an Oyster and our favourite the Hylas (would love to see a new Blue Water Yacht)
    We also look around quite a few catamarans at the show with our friends Heidi and Franny who are looking to buy something in the 45-50 foot range. There will also be a special video showing more of the boats they looked at and the full tour of the amazing HH racing cat.
    We get a few tech bits in too as we look at re-rigging Fair Isle and of course we spend time catching up with friends and meeting the other CZcams channels that went along ( there were more than 50 channels, quite a party!)
    It was lovely to meet our Patrons there, we had a special meet up at the Quirk n Bach Pottery, a big thank you to Jeff & Cameron for hosting us there, Jeff organises all the YT channels at the show and did an incredible job.

    What a great surprise seeing this terrific overview. Annapolis is a super town with so much history so quaint. I've been coming to the show for many years both power and boat. I like seeing the Bacon Sails evening which I never even heard about and so good to see Rhiley and Eleyna hosting the cruisers event. I took a walk through La Vagabonde,, a highlight for me! what a beautiful boat great to see where all the magic happens.

    I was delighted to see the CZcams notification come through that you'd uploaded a new video and that it was from the Annapolis boat show! I crewed for a couple of years on a Saga 43 whose skipper learned to sail there. BTW, I love the Garcia yachts. Where I live in southeast Alaska, to get in close to the glaciers in some of the fjords, or in places like the amazing Glacier Bay, you need either a steel or aluminum hull. Plus, Garcia yachts have several 'expedition' features built in. The slanted windows on the cabin top are designed to reduce the glare of the sun when it's low on the horizon and to deflect any green water coming over the bow in a downward direction. There's also a lip at the top of the window to keep the water from going over the cabin top and into the cockpit. Good design features.
    Yes, $500 for a lightweight, waterproof jacket is just too much, but since you got it at the boat show price, you paid about the right amount. Juneau, Alaska is a temperate rain forest so I go thru a lot of rain gear every few years while sailing here.
    I agree with the rigger about the Stay-Loc terminal fittings being as strong as the wire shroud. They've certainly proven themselves on boats I've helped re-rig and are so much easier to change than a swage fitting.
    Oh, and congrats on the awards nomination. Your production value on your videos is top notch and I couldn't help but notice you got a big round of applause!
    Cheers to you both!

    I recently bought that jacket in black! Certainly more than I ever planned to spend on a single piece of clothing but there aren't many options if you want thin, light, made in the latest Gore-tex material and made to last. It should last for many years if cared for and you can see the thought that's gone into the design and construction. Part of the price premium is no doubt that it's brand new design as most of their gear drops by over third after it's been out for a year or two. For someone who doesn't spend much on clothes, my major worry is losing it!

    • @chrisyarnold6205
      @chrisyarnold6205 Před rokem

      I have often wondered if Goretex would be a suitable material for sailing gear, for sure it is great for hiking, but I always thought that the salt that would inevitably collect on the jacket would disable the breathability, and would require constant treatment to remove. Seems as though a good Goretex hiking jacket might save a few dollars!

    The guy from Selden used the word "passivation". Sailors who like to keep their stainless steel from bleeding rust should get familiar with that word. Stainless steel doesn't rust. However, when stainless steel fabrications like the bow anchor support or stanchions are fabricated in metal shops that also fabricate ferrous steel items, particles of steel, some as small as molecular size, settles on and in the grain of the stainless steel nearby and will eventually cause bleeding rust. Passivation is the process of soaking the stainless steel assy in a mild acid solution made from orange peels. The acid dissolves the ferrous particles and is washed off with water. It's marina safe and very cheap. Also, when you buy stainless steel bolts, be sure that they are spec'd as passivated. McMaster-Carr carries a line of passivated stainless steel bolts. One more note about marine corrosion. Most people are familiar with separating dissimilar metals to prevent galvanic corrosion. When I worked on pumping stations in the brackish waters of S. Louisiana, the specs for the jobs had us isolating type 304 stainless pipe flanges from type 316 stainless bolts.

    The US does seem to be the last bastion of the traditional style sailing cruiser, they do look attractive, but I personally wouldn't get too hung up in twin rudders Steve. In the latest saga of the Gibraltar Orcas, the only boat to have sunk as a result of an interaction was one with a skeg hung rudder. It seems force on the skeg compromised the integrity of the hull whereas in all other cases the stock was bent but no hull damage occurred.

    I'd be interested to hear why you don't like twin rudders when they seem to have so many advantages?

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  Před rokem +1

      Well the only advantage I know of is they do a good job steering the yacht, nice and responsive. But actually that’s only because designers have compromised the rear section hull shape on many yachts to give a large cockpit and maybe double rear cabins. In other words they have messed up the hull and the twin rudders are a fix for the steerage, a good hull shape steers really nicely without them. The down sides are many. More drag, if your worried about that sort of thing, more complexity, but MUCH more importantly for cruisers is they are in incredibly vulnerable to damage. Out of line with the keel they get no protection, they have no skeg and they stuck out the side just waiting for a little touch on a grounding which you WILL get if you are cruising in unfamiliar waters all the time. People think twin rudders gives you redundancy, if you bash one you have a spare! Well that’s the biggest lie of all spouted by salesmen. One tried to do it to me at the boat show… it didn’t go down well!

    That was a pretty horribly designed boat. Aramid rigging? I guess that's fantastic if you want to replace them every 5 years and pay through the nose. Hydraulic jacks under the mast? That won't be a pain when it inevitably breaks, will it.
    I prefer a boat as simple as possible and as reliable as possible.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  Před rokem +1

      I wouldn't want the complexity either, but I think it's been well done. They are using the best components (aramid rigging will probably last longer than steel and is certainly stronger) but as a cruising boat it makes no sense, there's no way to repair things in out of the way places.

      Yes I know what you mean, modern production boats may make an excellent weekend boat or place to entertain, but are lacking as a boat to liv on and often the ability to go off shore too, We were surprised though as we did find some good new boats, check out the hylas walk through video we have coming up, or even the Outbound if you want a good sporty sailing cruiser.
