Sailing Alone Across an Ocean on a 30ft Sailboat and Losing the Rudder 1000 Miles from Hawaii

  • Hello Friends,
This is the long format episode that chronicles my 32 day, 2300 nm passage from Los Angeles to Honolulu onboard my 1965 Alberg 30 sailboat SV TRITEIA.
1000 miles from Hawaii my rudder failed due to striking a submerged object (that was painted red). After failed attempts to secure the control lines to the rudder due to large seas and high winds I was forced to steer with a small "Sea Squid" drogue for 18 days.
Triteia is equipped with a vintage Sailomat Aux Rudder wind vane which helped a great deal but was far undersized compared to the large rudder attached to Triteia’s full keel. The Windvane started to fail internally soon after the rudder failure. I was able to make a makeshift tiller handle that allowed me to turn the boat to get it back on course but the self steering started popping out of gear and stopped working completely while I crossed the channel between Molokai and Oahu forcing me to sit on the transom and hand steer for the last 6 hours of this intense passage.
If you would like to read the twice + daily blog posts I made during the crossing you can find those here: forecast.predictwind.com/trac...
(update: Rudder Repaired May 2022 - • Oahu Haul Out - Rudder... )
    MY SHORE TEAM!
A much needed shout out to my amazing Shore Team for this passage!
Some of you signed up by accidentally being related to me and the rest of you accidentally signed up because I love you, value your opinion and had your phone numbers.
David Frederick: My big brother and Executive Director of US Cyber Command for the NSA. David kept me safe with twice daily ship reports, checking on my mental health and used his army training to advise me about operating under fatigue and high stress.
Colby Thorp: My baby brother, a US marine and a padi certified search and rescue diver. Colby managed all of my accounts while I was away including the SOS email and secured a trailer for Triteia’s return trip. Thanks to his girlfriend Ashley for her help as well!
Sarah Koenig: A singer / Songwriter and One of my closet friends for the last 18 years. Sarah was only a message away with any questions I had, Google searches daily and kept my spirits up sharing all of the nice comments on Instagram and CZcams. She also looked into general delivery to Hawaii and called ahead to the Harbor Master in Oahu to confirm details for me.
Captain David Stovall: 200-Ton Masters Near Costal License Holder, Screen writer and a Texan so we are likely kinfolk. Stovall keep me updated with ships if I had questions while my brother was at work. He helped me work out the drogue steering and called BoatUS trying to get me a tow into port.
Captain Noah Peffer: 50-Ton Masters Near Costal License Holder, Professor of Nautical Sciences, Artist and dear friend. I hold Noah’s opinion as gospel and he has saved my ass on the last two passages. He is the one I bug when I am terrified.
I also want to thank my little brother Scott for checking on me, My oldest friend (since 3rd grade) Chance everything and My Buddy Dane for always being there.
I can never repay you guys and I don’t know what I would have done without you all!
    Forever in your debt !

This is my first time watching any of your videos. It really hit close when you talked about your relationship. My wife left me at the beginning of 2021, so I understand how this feels. My wife also did the no phone calls, no text, just went dark, and honestly it took me a while to put my finger on it, but it felt like she died. I'm 50, so this was my first break up in the cell phone era, and when your the one imposing the silence its fine, your getting your way, dealing with your emotions in your own way. When your the person who isn't making the choice, it feels like your wife died. Anyway I don't know if it helps to know your not alone, I don't know why I just wanted to comment, maybe this post was for me IDK.

12:06 the start of your TRUE happiness has just begun my friend. Trust me!!!
I just turned 50 and I just started my journey alone almost 2years ago.
I haven’t been this happy, truly happy inside ever in my life Bc now like you I’ve had many loves that have come and gone and come back and gone again lol! Once I realized that I get to be selfish enough to take care of me it was only then I was able to grow and show true kindness to others.
I wish you all the worlds luck and many smooth nights of sailing!!
Just know that you are here for you, now that you have this opportunity to grow❤️🙏🏻💪🏼

Holy shit, I started this interested in your sailing adventure but couldn't be more sorry to hear about you and your wife. That's a devastating blow and I imagine this voyage was difficult to make alone. I'm glad to hear your optimism, but can't help but relate to the pain in your voice.

Man…I commented way to early, that was epic! Dealing with losing your rudder and having to get in the water was super sketchy! 😳
I had a similar experience with my ex wife.. 12 years together and one day literally she said we’re done.. didn’t even see it coming. Turns out there was another guy and she had been sneakily using dating sites.. to say I was heartbroken was an understatement. I lost my house, seeing my 2 young children, and who I thought was my life partner.. She got everything in the divorce, except £5k which I used to buy a caravan. I lived in that van for a year until I financially got myself stable.. Anyway, it definitely sucks man but you are clearly made of the right stuff.. time does heal the majority of the pain, but it takes time. Just keep thinking of yourself, your journey in life.. there’s so much more to it than just relationships. Plus, things never stay the same.. life can change course for the better in an instant. Sending positive vibes bro 👍🏼

Mate - what a fecked up world. How can you lose all that when someone just walks out on you, on a whim!? That you sending out positive vibes from behind such a story is a testament to your character. I really hope you have been able to find a way to spend time with your kids again. Peace, Love , Out.

@@martynjones2684 Thank you mate, yes I have a great relationship with my 2 kids.. theyre quite grown up now, and I got married again 2 years ago to a wonderful girl.. More than happy now. I think sending out positive vibes is exactly what the world needs right now. No matter how bad your life someone always has it tougher. Appreciate the comment mate 👍

How did she get the house and everything if she was the one cheating?

    • @waynester71
      @waynester71 Před 2 lety +2

@@smashergrilla954 She was simply more ruthless than me.. she had a solicitor really early on when I was still reeling and dealing with the break up. She said a fair few things that were not true.. & claimed she deserved everything as she had the children to look after... I just rolled over. She was married before so knew so much more about how these things go.. I was nieve and devastated at the loss of everything that I almost gave up. Tough time.
