From what I understand, the song is about Lucid Dreaming and the song is aimed at a child who has recurring nightmares. By learning to take control of the dream, it no longer has power over you.

Given how the song starts "Your mind tricked you to feel the pain, of someone close to you leaving the game, of life". I've always understood this song to be a GHOST of a father singing a lullaby to their grieving child in their dreams, trying to console them from beyond.

That is so sad. Queensryche has a lot of awesome songs, but NO two songs are ever alike and it's up to the band itself to decide what they compose/write. Silent Lucidity is among my favorite songs, and being 64 yrs old I've heard a LOT of music in my life. To make it onto my favorites' List is no small accomplishment.... Stay Safe and Well, Helene. Not creepy at all "I will be watching over you." Think of him singing to his child and it all makes sense. It's a bit like a lullaby to his little one. An attempt to calm him after the bad dream and tell him how he can take control and not have bad dreams again. :)
Edit: Yes it's about lucid dreaming. I've done it a couple times by accident and it was incredible. But I can't do it when I want. Some people know how to initiate it at will though :). As for the mixture of voices, well, it's dreaming. the child doesn't know how to control his dreams, so the sounds are confused and scattered...You know, dream-like :)

One of the last songs he did with QR is "If I Were King", which I think is a criminally underrated song. It's lyrics are pretty straight-forward, but the message is one that so many veterans can identify with....losing someone who has become like a brother to you while serving in the military. I'd love for you to check that one out even if you don't do a reaction/analysis video for it. You just continually blow me away with your deep, intelligent understanding of music lyrics, Daniel. Geoff Tate has one of the best voices you'll ever hear. This song really doesn't bring that out.
Queen of the Reich and The Lady Wore Black from the Queensryche EP, Warning and En Force from The Warning, and Gonna Get Close To You and Walk In The Shadows from the Rage For Order album are all good choices. When you listen to Operation: Mindcrime, you MUST do the whole album. It is arguably the best concept album ever produced (and this from a big Jethro Tull fan).

  • @matthewhoag2609

Geoff Tate is right up there vocally with the likes of Boston's Brad Delp. His voice was deep on this one, but he has an incredible range, as you will see. This song is beautiful, but won't really give you a feel for their style - they are solidly metal - at least that's what we called them back in the 80's as many of the subgenres were being defined.
Operation Mindcrime is definitely a conceptual masterpiece, and you really would enjoy reacting to the whole album. The song I Don't Believe in Love could be sampled form the album if you wanted without spoiling the story (similar to Us and Them). The album is more of an action movie than deeply philosophical like Dark Side of the Moon or Thick as a Brick. I got to see them perform this masterpiece from start to finish twice - just as good live!
Some other good singles to react to are Jet City Woman and Emipre. Also, Take Hold of the Flame will showcase Tate's vocal range. My choice, however, would be to go all the way back to their eponymous debeut EP and check out Queen of the Reich. Tate's wailing vocals are reminiscent of Iron Maiden's Dickenson, and Chris DeGarmo and Mike Witney shred on guitar. The lyrics aren't as deep as Silent Lucidity, but they came out of the gate on fire.

  • @thegorn68

I would classify them as Power Metal for their earlier stuff but their album "Operation Mind Crime" could be considered Progressive Metal. A good live performance video that just about every reaction video channel reacts to is "Take Hold Of The Flame" from a 1984 performance. When he was in his prime, NO ONE could sing like Geoff Tate.

It's pretty freaky to be aware you are dreaming! It happened a lot to me as a child. I'd dream of being under water but could feel myself breathing or flying like superman but the realization of these things not being possible would always come flooding in and I'd wake up. I was also interested in this and tried to stay when it happened but never could. I think if this were possible you would have to be a pretty stable person because the human mind is capable of such monstrosities it would be hard to control!

An interesting tidbit regarding this song - not long after the song came out DeGarmo was asked in a Kerrang! magazine interview to explain the song's origins. Here's a brief excerpt: "It’s about what they call ‘lucid dreaming’. Or ‘dream-control’. Basically, just opening up the doors to your subconscious mind, and learning how to master your dreams. Actually be able to steer and control them. It's probably one of the most genuinely out there things we’ve ever done."

I have had lucid dreams before and they were awesome. I am so glad you found Queensryche, one of the most underrated bands. Having grown up in the 50s and 60s, I was heavily influenced by great rock music and was spoiled. Up until this year since 1980, only Queensryche joined that exclusive club. Thanks to reactions, I was exposed to Nightwish and became an instant fan (has to be Floor and/or Marco singing....they spoiled me to their earlier singers). I feel that since you liked Nightwish , you'll like Queensryche. Recently while I was listening to Queensryche, I realized that both bands had alot in common. Geoff Tate and Floor Jansen, IMO the best lead singers in rock , definitely the most versatile ( see Waken Ghost Love Score and Take Hold of the Flame live) . killer lyrics but Tuomas more poetic. Awesome harmonizing. Wide range from heavy rock to sweet ballads and all points in between. Concept/theme albums.....Nightwish kills it with Imaginaerum and Nature and Queensryche has the best concept album Mindcrime. Talented musicians. Enjoy Queensryche, they have so many great songs.

A decent tune, a little on the slow/mellow side for me. Thus, never really paid much attention to the lyrics so this should be interesting! A song about dreaming, whole new meaning now! Epiphany says to check out a book titled The Bridge Across Forever: A True Love Story by Richard Bach. In the story they learn how to astral travel and meet each other out on the astral plane. Apparently this is a true story of a husband and wife. Do not let this song lull you into a false sense of security, for Queensryche WILL rock your ass off!! Great reaction!! BTW, Geoff = Jeff

There's a belief among those that lucid dream that if you sync your dreams with someone you emotionally connect with, you can enter their dreams and meet with them. This song always came off to me as a man trying to protect someone he loved during their "nightmare" times. Almost as if he was playing her "knight in shining armor" in her dreams. It's definitely done in a more romantic loving way than a creepy one. My take was always husband and wife or gf and bf.

I've seen your reactions before Deathlok and out of all the reactions I have seen to Silent Lucidity you are the first person to actually correlate Dream Control in the song. Yes, Inception focuses on a specific kind of Dream Control so good on you for picking that element of the song up. It should be interpreted at least by the official video that a parent is helping a child to overcome nightmares, by using Dream control. The middle part of the song is the parent's instruction of how to attain control of the dream, to visualize it, record it in the present tense, put it in permanent form, and persisting those efforts the child will achieve dream control, the other voices are what the subconscious is experiencing while in sleep, struggling to control the dream and the typical dream noise that accompanies a dream usually, with the subconscious asking for help. There are no darker connotations than that if you interpret it the way the video visual presentation.

Classic "power ballad" from what they called "arena rock". All the heavy metal/hard rock bands back then would write something like this as a means of crossing over from AOR to Top 40 and Adult Contemporary radio formats...solely to draw in a larger audience. Styx did it with "Babe". Journey did it with "Open Arms". Journey was opening up for the Rolling Stones in stadiums like JFK in Philadelphia to 100,000 people. 2 years later, Journey was the headliner, off the back of "Open Arms". Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

It wasn't until recently, that I actually paid attention to it and realized what a masterpiece it truly is, and I don't say that lightly. It's only when every aspect of something aligns perfectly together will I give it such praise. The music, lyrics, voice, and original video have done just that. Truly powerful. I always felt there was an allusion to astral projection in addition to the obvious lucid dreaming aspect. The presence of a "guide" in the dream led me to believe that people are able to, for lack of a better term, "link up" subconsciously and live in a dream world together.

I think you missed the early lyrics about "some one close to you leaving the game of life". Much of this song is about being in touch with dead loved ones. "We'll be watching over you"

This is an amazing show, and I really want to see your reaction to the crowd singing along to the INSTRUMENTAL. Yes, they sing a song that has no words. All while the band is doing their laundry on stage (watch the right side of the stage for Washer and Dryer). This live version is 1000 times better than the studio version.

This is a song about suicide and being the survivor that wished they could have done something to help and vowing to the universe that they will be there next time for the next person should it ever happen in their realm again. It's a beautiful song and inspiring. but it comes from a truly tragic place. Edit: Lyrics: When someone close to you leaving the game...of life."

People are probably mentioning listening to Operation Mindcrime since it is considered a concept album and a rock opera. Some people believe it deserves to stand alongside the likes of The Who’s Quadrophenia and Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon for its conceptual brilliance. If you want hear another deep voice singer that is similar try Crash Test Dummies with "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm"

I'm going off of memory, which is not necessarily the best thing for me to do. I cannot find Your reaction to bohemian rhapsody official video. But I'm pretty sure You said that the video Give so much more detail And Is so much fun An helps to explain why the song transitions so much.
You need to listen to silent lucidity with the official video. Aside from been a gorgeous You need to listen to silent lucidity with the official video. Aside from been a gorgeous production The video helps to explain the lyrics. There is nothing in there about horror or Scaring somebody. You are correct in that it is about lucid dreams. If I'm not mistaken the guitarist Chris DeGarmo (spelling unsure) wrote the song because he practices lucid dreaming.
The album people want you to react to is probably operation mindcrime which is a concept album Much like The moody blues. What the album is about still applies today. Eyes of a stranger Is a really good song to react to Since you can pull it out of the album and it's stands Alone. When queens right 1st started they wore a heavy metal hair band. Queen of the ryche is a good song to react to. Off of the next album Is I dream in infrared. Each album they gets a bit more mellower But are still rock. There is jet city woman. It's Hard to pick Just a few songs and my mind is totally blanking.
With many bands it's best to do the official video not the live video But that's not true in all cases. Keep doing what you do I really enjoy your videos.
