- I guess it's not a barn find if it happened in a trailer. The Grape Ape sat next to my 1981 TXL in an enclosed trailer all Summer. Absolutely nothing was wrong with the TXL, but the Grape Ape on the other hand...

I had to pull the steering column on my 94 xlt, all the carriage bolts fell out and I was dreading pulling the track. As a Hail Mary I lifted up the rear end with an overhead crane and there was just enough room to put the bolts back in. Definantly a 2 person job but it beats pulling the track. Love your xlt!
It happens 😂 to the best of us
Love the builds you and your buds do, hope the Ape gets back to ripping soon. The long vids are great also.
Thanks!
Just so happens I’m having a grain belt light while watching this. 😆
Awesome! I see you in the comments on Todd's videos too, so I have to ask if it's a standard or a pounder? Todd told me where to get the pounders but it's pretty far out of my way.
Pounders. My brother lives in Minnetonka and brings me up some loot 😛
I need a guy like you in my life... Thanks for all the content!
Wow, thanks
Nice work John. I had a 1974 custom 2 530 that did that bog. It turned out the muffler baffle broke. As for your stuck steering rusted post. I'm going with mouse pee. I actually take a large piece of aluminum foil and fold it a few times, and fold it around my air box openings. Mice don't like biting that stuff. I also wrap it around my exhaust pipe outlets to keep them out. Oh, I'm a WIX guy too.
That aluminum foil is a good idea!
I've about had it with CZcams. Once again I had to re subscribe. But I'll definitely keep on doing that because it's cheaper than paying someone to clean the carbs 🤣 another great video.
Thanks for re-subbing every time! It is appreciated!
Nutter. Just started restoring one that sat since 2018. Did everything you did last week. Soaked the steering in diesel and used a drill to spin it in the vise till the rust was gone. Pain in the …,,,,,
#OldSledLife
there is an easier way to clean the tank, pull the pickup line up through the fuel fill, tip the sled slightly to on side and towards the front, insert a 3/4" flat end hose into the front down corner of the tank, along with the hose inset the end of a air hose blow gun, wrap the bundle with a rag around the fuel fill and the bundle of hosen pickup hose, and 3/4" hose which should be long enough to go into a five gallon container, apply air pressure, repeat until tank is empty and clean. you may have to relocate the 3/4" hose end to get the tank completely clean and dry.
I think i clean the carbs to may times today !! need a nap!! lol
Cheers
Hey John, enjoying your channel. Mick
Hi Mick! Good to hear from you!
My 92' 440 liquid used to get a steering issue like that. Lucky for me it was always just moisture in the spindles. Good fix on yours Nutter.
Thanks
I had a 93 XLT Special in my primarily Polaris stable. Fun when it run. I'm a big believer in moth balls for varmint control. I take the airbox top foam or collar into the house off season and cover the airbox top with duct tape with a mothball sitting right of top.
You appeared unfamilar with the steer shaft zerk. That definitely needs grease annually.
Grease zerks pressed in thin wall are all over, spindles and skid tubes. I welded nuts over the zerk holes in the tubes and replaced the pressin zerks with threaded. Later Po's started coming that way.
Tank: I have used a garden hose to wash down and a wet vac to empty.. With that much crud. I would replace the pickup and intank line as well
Thanks
I hate mice too. I feel your pain. And those air box clips are ridiculously priced
Convert that bad boy to 2 internal drivers, no need for 4 on a sub 100 HP trailer sled, makes servicing so much better. Always had best luck with the blue fuel line, think it came from DKirk or K&L back in the day, seemed to resist the crap fuel the feds force on us way better than anything else. Fresh clutch springs always help, clean helix as well as usual belt deflection. Also, we always did the choke adjustment from back side of the carbs, seemed to help those triples a ton. You've been around the block, so I'm sure you'll cover all bases and plenty of carb clean along the way!
I had the 93 XLT Special with the 4 drivers and replaced the track with out pulling the chaincase. Think I cut off the speedo side bearing and maybe left the new left bearing loose on the axle and slid in place after the axle install?
Clean the carbs!
If you need to get the gas out, a vacuum oil extracting system works awesome. I use one to suck the oil out of the chaincase, suck out gas, coolant, etc. pretty handy. They come pneumatically driven as well so you don’t even have to pump it.
I've been meaning to pick up one of those extractors. Great idea. .
curious to see how you solve the xlt bog. it’s been my opinion of them for years and it’s really the only reason i wouldn’t own one now in 23’ otherwise i love them! i subscribed!
I'm not concerned about whether or not I can fix the bog. It's fixable. We have fixed several XLT bogs on the channel already. Go back and look at the older videos. There was a no snow that day and it was warm so that was not the time to work on a bog. I'll work on it when we have some snow to test on and hopefully no warmer than 20 or 25 degrees F.
Hey Nutter! Lots to do on the Grape Ape! Crazy how much can happen in one season eh 🤷🏻♂️
Cheers buddy 🍻
Lots to do on all of the sleds Rob. Storage is the enemy of the snowmobile.
Lol 1 thing leads to another...been there more than a time or 2...shes lookin nice though and nice 2002 XC shirt at the end
Thanks
Don`t be surprised on the availability of those Wix filters. We sell mainly Wix and have been having a very hard time getting our hands on the 33001, 33002 and the 3/8ths 33003. Try and explain it to a customer!
Interesting. Last Season it was NGK spark plug caps. It's always something. Gotta keep an inventory on hand.
hopefully snow and ice build up, doesn't push plate away from tunnel. Then begin hitting the track.
Pretty sure it won't.
Love the videos! I've been working for Polaris for 3 years now and have recently gotten into the wedge sled life. I have I picked up a 96 XLT last year and got it running pretty darn well, but am now experiencing issues with wiring, voltage regulator ect. Burnt all my dash bulbs and headlight last year. Checked connection on the regulator and replaced it twice. Just a bit shy to dig much further without help. Any suggestions?
Thanks I think I will do a video on some more in-depth trouble shooting for this problem. For now I'll just say that if you are using the old style black plastic voltage regulators try switching to the heavy duty model with the aluminum case. The Polaris number is 4010301. There's aftermarket regulators that are similar if you want to save a buck. Just google that number. Make sure you grounds are good. Make sure the brown wire with the eyelet is grounded and make sure the connection on the yellow wire to the voltage regulator is good.
Same deal happened to me last winter on my XLT. It wouldn’t pull past 7k rpm. New fuel filter was plugged. The in tank screen fell off, so that didn’t help. Threw new lines, filter and put the in tank screen back on and was good to go.
We went through that with Both Dennis and Lonnie last Winter also.
John have you ever used gross jets before, there great if you can find them, there a glass ball style jey that replaces those viton tip needles
Hi Larry, I used one in the Tillotson HD I rebuilt for the Ski Daddler. Didn't know you could get them for Mikuni VM series carbs. I will look around for some. Keep up the great comments Larry! I always look forward to hearing from you.
I don't even use the air box in mine o run pod filters in mine because I had a bog and it cleared
Whatever works for you. I run K&N on 2 of my 3 TXLs. Just need to make sure it's jetted right for whatever restriction you put on the carb. Sounds like yours is probably fine. Polaris are usually pretty rich from the factory.
@@nuttersspeedshop yeah mine was pretty restricted evidently and when it cleared up like that it really helped
🍻🍻
what are your carbs tuned to? and do you have stock jets
We had a 94 xlt broke bottom half of piston. Drove fine just bogged a lot more than normal
Interesting. I've had broken skirts but I always noticed. It only take a few seconds to pull the carbs and look though, so I will.
Hey nutter. Do you have or know where to get cylinders for an 80 tx 440
Used is all that is available. Ebay and swap meets.
Could that "stuff" have come from a fuel can that was used to fill your tank?
I keep my gas cans clean. It's probably from some small town gas station. We filled up at a lot of those last year.
@@nuttersspeedshop yup, it had to come from external source.
How many sleds have fallen into parallel due to mice? I rebuilt a 99 ski doo formula Z 670 about 10 years ago. The guy I bought it from said he gave up after rebuilding it twice and blowing the engine up. What he didn't realize was exactly what you just found in your air box. Only three inches of mouse nest was in the bottom of the air box which I'm sure caused the engine failures. I never had another issue with that sled.
I hate mice.
What new fuel line brand/company would you recommend when replacing old ones.
🍻🍻
I use Honda oem fuel lines made in Japan on all my jetskis. Kind of expensive but they last. I need to try some on one of my sleds
Any good quality polyurethane line. Marshall Distributing was making really good line a few years ago. The clear polyurethane from your Polaris dealer with the actual Polaris part number on it is also good, but $.
In 2000 i went to a artic cat. Dealer close up auction. Brought a 1998 ZRT 600 that was in for repair that was fixed had 200 miles on it. Was sitting for 2 yrs. Someone never picked it up. 1000$ then brought. A new 600ZRT still in crate never put together. For 3 grand. Lol still in shipping crate. That one that was repaired had clutch work done per paper work. She is fast at 65 i dont ride anymore. My ? Is what do you think they are worth one has 1500 miles on it other 0. Won alot of beers with the one hang on. Idk. Ill post em both on facebook.
That's cool. I really don't know the values.i pay as little as possible 😅
Broken skirt?
Interesting idea, but it would be the first time I broke a skirt and didn't know immediately from the sound or power loss. It only takes seconds to pull the carbs out and look, so I will.
