@@WhiteSploitationFavs It just silly to think the way you described flat Earth model. Of course it's not 2D, it has mountains and sea depth, and atmosphere above us. Doesn't it? Flat means it's not sphere. And it's most retarded argument is "it must have an edge if it's flat". Why does it? Why it cannot stretch to the infinity sideways, down and upwards(atmosphere/space). Why we do not go down? It's lava, too hot. Why we do not travel sideways? Maybe someone did? Lets say it's surrounded by ice(as they tell in this clip). It's at least under -50C degrees and maybe more further away. How long you'll survive in these temperatures with no vegetation and only ice? What if there are "other more advance governing powers who control these territories and they do not allow us to explore? GPS keeps us in circles. Why not? It's controlled by US Government and it's for free so every Joe can use it and do not worry about navigating himself.
I have different theory. Its spherical, but it is much larger than they tell us. Way larger. And many things I wrote above apply, like different governing powers, Ice surrounding us. And our governing powers are not aloud to disclose this to us for some reasons. What if these neighboring powers are them aliens we thought come from space, but actually they live side by us on same planet?
Funny thing how masses believe in everything governments or educational system (controlled by same government) say. It goes through history. The best example is religions. Most of today's educated people know how indoctrination works. You are told by elders in your childhood that you must believe in something and you do until you dead. Without questioning because it's a sin. I see same model in today's religion - Science. They tell us to believe craziest thing and we do. For example an atom. So many time they changed description and model of it. Why? because they do not know what it is. It's not possible to see it. What they "see" is magnetic field picked up by electromagnetic microscope. The rest is pure fantasy and guesses. And we must believe them. Sure. People use your heads, use your own judgement, seek for answers.

The harm I see in believing in a flat earth is the slippery slope. Generally, it's found that if you're willing to listen to and even accept some of the most far-reaching conspiracies, that you'll be open to more of those theories, ones that I believe are *significantly* more harmful than some people who think the earth is flat.

    • @chillingongreens
      @chillingongreens Před 2 lety +49

The conspiracy theories are not the problem.
It's people that are the problem.
If people are willing to delude themselves into some sort of fantasy of an authoritarian fantasy, what would be the motivation?
They want to feel self important.
Their ego is so weak that it is willing to latch onto something bigger that offers some kind of control over their reality.
And, like a drug, the inflated sense of self importance can be reached by more extreme conspiracy theories.
Conspiracy theories are not about logic, morals, or even the conspiracy itself.
It is a circus of idiots dancing around their altar of a god.
It makes them *feel* good. Logic, morals, and conspiracies are just the tools they use to achieve and justify that end state.
And, another person here already said, it's hard to win an argument with a genius, but it is impossible to win one with an idiot.
Let them believe in a flat earth or anti vaxx. It's whatever. They aren't changing for us or any time soon.

      @@chillingongreens Close, but not quite.
A significant number of conspiracies nowadays rely on broad statements from minimal observations. A mental leap, of sorts.
The people who buy into them are more likely from certain groups (i.e. Republicans, Conservatives) because those groups are known for jumps in logic themselves, albeit ones not quite as drastic.
As we use leaps in logic, we grow used to them, which allows us to make broader jumps without becoming suspicious.
As such, you leap more and more over time, which allows you to make the mental long jump that many conspiracies require.
This, in addition to a culture of automatically doubting those who disagree, creates a near absolute sense of truth. This nigh-unshakable truth is, to my knowledge, not on a person or group, but to an idea.
They can be convinced, you just need to prove trustworthy. Avoid shittalking, make well-cited claims, and act like you're on their side or at least neutral, and you can help them see the truth. Don't let them jump even further down the rabbit hole.
