Great review! I was on the fence, but have only heard positive things. This is the review that sold me on it, particular,y the Switch portable/sleep functionality.Also, FINALLY, a CZcams reviewer who actually talks normally, and not like some kind of infomercial host with ADHD and a halfway lethal dose of caffeine. I realize you are new to the series and may not be aware of the carnage maps. It's basically a second much harder half of the game. Complete with its own story line. Well it's story light but a ton of new challenges to help prepare you for the big boss fight with Baal.

@@nobeastlikeme12 I loved P5 to death but Disgaea has more replayability because of the deep tactics. But yeah, I was actually down when I finished P5 - it was leaving friends that you loved hanging out with during an amazing vacation. Story-wise P5 is king, D5's story is tolerable but the characters do have a lot of personality. They're both amazing games.
Been into the series (casually) for a while now, and it's nice to hear feedback from an experienced gamer who's new to series. Glad you enjoyed it.

In terms of gameplay, this is definitely the best in the series. Story wise, I'd say it's second to the first game, which has a really fun story and cast of characters. Being the first game, it's pretty tough to get into by modern standards, especially if you started with this one which has the most quality of life improvements. But it's still a great game by its own rights.
2 is kind of an evolution of 1 and also has a decent story and cast. It introduced a much larger post game and had elements that would carry over into future games, such as the Carnage Dimension levels.
Three and four are probably a couple of the weaker points in the series for me. You say that five had a lot of dialogue, three and four REALLY drag on for longer than they should in between missions. It really feels like they got a proper editor or something for this one.
Overall, I love the series in general. Nice to see someone new to the series giving these games a chance.
My Disgaea familia! Just the review I was hoping to see. I'm getting it anyway as Disgaea is one of my all time favorite games, but after 4 I didn't know just how high I should be getting my hopes.

100+ hours for postgame alone. Hitting lv9999 easily just the beginning for veteran players.
Also adding the DLC is pretty much an afterthought if you just buy the game & it's season pass. Immediately got it on launch.
This is my first Disgaea game too! liking it a lot so far.

I've been playing Disgaea since the PSP. Though I've never played the first Disgaea game, I have played 2, 3, and 4. Great humor, strategy, customization, and more. This and Persona are two of my favorite JRPG series'. Definitely can't wait to pick this up!
i played the demo for 5 on switch, enjoyed it a lot and bought disgaea 1 and 2 on pc, beat both of those and now im working on 5 while i also wait for them to port 3 and 4 to pc

I was addicted to disgaea games from psp to psvita. Great series.
I've played every Disgaea game and even watched the anime, in a good way, nothing has changed as far as gameplay/soundtrack/menu, it's always been this way aside from the dialogue, one of my favourite series.

I'd been debating this game for a while, just finished playing octopath traveler and to my boy this had gone on sale in the switch store. This review was most certainly a massive help, I did play the demo as well. Here's to another 100+ hours in a game

I agree with you Disgaea is along the lines of a tactical RPG which are awesome and with how funny Disgaea is it is awesome! With all of the stuff you can do on the side it is for a good reason and it will improve your character or weapon or something else. Thanks for doing the review!

Though going off topic a bit here, the Ps2 game (made by the same devs) called Soul Nomad and the World Eaters was an amazing game with funny dialogue, great character designs, awsome animation sequences, a flashy battle system and a pretty good plot.
Shame it didn't catch any large attention unfortunately.
Never heard of those games but if they're as charismatic as Disgaea, I will check them out for sure!

If you ever play any of the older games in the series, I recommend starting with Disgaea 2. It has the same GeoPanel mechanic as Disgaea 5's, but isn't as balls-bustingly difficult as Disgaea 1 or a direct sequel like Disgaea D2.
The GeoPanel mechanic is somewhat different in Disgaea 3 and 4, and but if you decide to pick up one of those I highly suggest going with Disgaea 4 over 3, if only because the mechanics that were added/changed in 3 are much more refined and overall better implemented in 4.
You sold me on this game, I’m gonna download it once I’m off work. Until then, back to breath of the wild.
Disgaea is essentially .. Final Fantasy Tactics if everyone involved in creating it was crazy. And it just blows all conventions out of the window. For instance, leveling gets easier the higher you get, you probably have an easier time going from 100 - 9999 than you had from 1-100. You literally level up multiple levels per kill later in the game, especially in the special level maps you can unlock.

You can have the other Disgaea games on the psvita! So you can still have that on the go feel and advantage to pause do some turns and etc.

DOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... i hated these types of games before... until i played disgaea5, i only tried the demo But it was digital Opium for me.. im getting the game in a few days...and because of the disgaea addiction i developed im now hooked on octopath traveler as well.. not the same or as deep but soo nice. months ago i would have luaghed at you for recomending games like these for me hehehehe

I haven't played 5 yet but it's always best on handhelds so switch might be the best option. also you should definitely try at least 1 and 4, they're on different playstation devices and some are ported to pc

I'd have to save you're misleading people with calling this a 100+ hour adventure. The stories in Disgaea games typically takes 20-30 hours to complete. There are also alternate endings that you can achieve simply by losing a battle to a certain boss that could "end" the game in under 10 hours.
The **1,000+ hours of gamplay comes from OPTIONAL content.
Item World - Optional
Min/Maxing - Optional
Maxing out Dark Console - Optional
You can finish the game doing the bare minimum of all these things. Now, if you just beat the "primary" ending and call yourself finished you'll be missing out. As there is a ton of post game content and there is a ton of stuff that greatly opens up the game. Some people could grind all of their main cast to 9999 with maxed stats and all spells from desired pupils. It's all optional fun.
I'd definitely suggest going back and playing Disgaea afternoon of Darkness (Remake of Original) and work your way from there. You can really just finish the story to get a feel for how things develop and how a lot of the side content works.

Disgaea has to be my second favorite game of all time mainly cause of the story it's very interesting to me my favorite disgaea has to be the 4th one love the characters especially fuka kasamatsuri who voiced Sakura from naruto the English voice actor

Yea Disgea seems to be in my top 3 choice aside from Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together.

I really love tactics ogre LUCT, so this has the same feeling like TO LUCT right?
Disgaea 5 is awesome. No point going back as five is easily the best. However FF tactics is different lets cling together and tactics ogre all play differently to Disgaea and are worth a play. Emulators for PC make these really easy to play these days, also you can get them cheap for PS Vita from the PS store.

disgaea 1 is the next best then i think it is 3 and 2 if you want to keep playing them and if you have a ds and a friend just as crazy for games like this, you can get disgaea ds and even battle each other and sell items to each other in close contact connection
can you move left and right or up and down in a grid movement? when I played the demo I was using the left joystick and it doesn't lock to the grid so it was often hard to select the square I wanted.
In the settings, there is an option to make it easier to move around the grid. I always used the "d-pad" to move around the grid.

Did you get to the Asagi map? How's the performance for Switch on that map?
I haven't had any performance drops with one oddball exception... I was in an item world and EVERYTHING went into slow-motion-lag for about 10 seconds. It only happened once, was probably some sort of glitch.
Cool, I have this for PS4 and one of the selling points for Disgaea 5 is loading massive numbers of enemies on the map at once (Asagi map has 100 enemies) it's also your main map for farming shards and extracts. Good to know that there are no frequent performance drops. Thanks for the reply Taco!

so am I right in asuming that this game has a lot of Fire Emblem vibes? recently finished Fire Emblem Echoes and need some more games to hold me over until big switch releases like Splatoon and Pokken (on the fence about Arms)
It's the same "genre" as FE, but it's not very similar in terms of game-feel. It cranks the crazy factor and humor up to 11, I'd recommend taking a look at the demo on the eshop.

Game Taco so essentially this game is the heart and soul of what JRPGs are lol, might give it a look, the combat looks familiar enough with me enjoying FE as well as being something fresh

Just beating the main story is only the beginning, and that alone will take you 100 hours. Yeah, this game is deep as fuck, and you can basically play it forever. PS: the final story boss ISN'T the true main boss of the game. Like I said, beating the story is only scratching the surface of this game.

if only disgaea 4 was on there :/ i am gonna buy this one for sure since i complete disgaea 1 2 cursed memeories 2 dark hero days (in axel mode) and about half way trough 3 or mayby even further, i just dont feel like completing 3 anymore ebcause of the god damm annoying vita back touch pad thingy majic thta keeps messign whit my camera. Either way ill prob buy 3 and 4 again if they come out on the pc just like 1 and 2 did. but the sizes are new for me pretty intresting, i assume magichange is still a thing (ever since 2 dark hero days) so if anything ill capture a lv 9999 demon turn it into a weapon and get free kills that way depending how good/bad this capture system is either way thangs for showign some gameplay

Thats false, amazon is suppose to get it to you the day of release. Not the day before.
The whole reason why I was getting mine from Amazon is the Prime discount. If I'm not getting that, I might as well just go digital (which I did).
Never been late for me, not once. Amazon has been consistent every single time.
Philip stafford umm a lot of people like the shaft. don't be judging others for their preferences. a major benefit of digital is that there is no waiting to get it nor shortages. another is that you don't have to carry around dozens to hundreds of cartridges or disks around with you. just because you don't like something doesn't mean you have to shit on it.
Rather interesting choice to have a Disgaea game on a Nintendo console, since those games get released on Sony consoles most of the time.
electricmastro the first game got a DS port some odd years ago, so its not the first time the series has been on a Nintendo handheld. granted the Ds version is greatly downscaled due to hardware limitations (not much voice acting, skills have a black BG instead of showing the field) its still not bad by any means
disgaea games should add difficulty options. it gets hard later on and requires too much grinding. i can never get the jury or whatever inside a item to agree with me so that i can lv up the item all the way.

RaikaSTi you want a difficulty option? play the game enough to unlock the cheat shop. from there you can put give yourself more exp to make grinding easier and by default the rest of the game easier from then on, or set the battle rank higher to make it harder.

Game Taco. Did you have any issues with the game crashing? I've had about 5 game crashed in 40 hours of play.
I had one crash with the latest update. It was after I published this review.
OK. I also had a review code and it crashed several times on me in the last two weeks. I updated yesterday and had one crash so far. I re-downloaded and it seemed to help, that is until the last crash after the update. Thanks for the response.

I got mine from the Japanese eShop in March and after 100+ hours into the game and I still haven't had a crash. maybe it is only happening on the US release?

So i got some tips dunno if you want them but here goes : For height problems you can jump jump making a charecter jump higher it can be done with a ítem and in Chara world it max at 99 and also you can go to Chara world with a Mage or Metallia to get skill scrolls to teach Magic to other charecter Magic can be used by Anyone last thing you can equip buy in shop it was with square in PS4 dunno switch

Try stella deus. Not a great mark in history, but a nice play if you're bored and looking for a "tactic" kind of rpg. Final fantasy Tactics Advance 1 and 2 still remain king. You' won't find another that good.

I think it's worth the $60 tag since you can literally play it anywhere anytime. it also comes with ALL of the dlc baked in and a game that can give you hundreds of hours of play and enjoyment is worth the full price. just my opinion though 🙂
Go for it. I've played every disgaea except Disgaea 3. Also played the other NIS Strategy RPG's. Makai Kingdom, La pucelle tactics, Makai Kingdom. For me, It's been my go to for SRPG's. I've never liked Fire Emblem. I always thought this series was so much deeper in terms of gameplay and mechanics.
Uh.. The try on feature in the store will save you -plenty- of time buying and equipping gear..
I know there is a try on button, but I don't see a way to easily switch innocents to new gear.

It could just be the Disgaea series. I've played other rpg tactical games and got into them rather quickly like Fire Emblem Conquest and Awakening, and also Devil Survivor Overclocked; but for some reason I can't seem to get into Disgaea 5. Maybe it's the tutorials or just the vast amount of content I'm not sure. Into the Breach is a cool small tactical game too, but isn't really rpg-ish. I'm just saying this because even though I like this genre, for some reason I'm finding it hard to get into this game; so maybe give other games of this genre a try :)

"I've never played a Disgaea game before" fucking casual. This series is NOTHING like FF Tactics. The big difference is that Disgaea is actually a good game.

These games just look too weird for me. The art style looks horrible & combat uninteresting. I always hear good things. I go to check it out 1 more time & think oh hell no.
Now Dragon Quest has cute enemies but it's fun & amazing design. This doesn't look appealing like Dragon Quest
I tried the demo. For me its just way too wacky and weird and also there is way, way too much dialogue. I just wanted to play and not look at text that seemingly was hiding important game mechanic explanations between pointless blahblahblah lines of a stupid giggly boob-girl. If there is a great game hiding behind all this, it is hiding too well from me. I can´t stand this sort of bollocks that the game starts with.
