Episode 51 of Love At First Scent
This was a CZcams Live broadcast streamed on Friday 6 December 2019. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
In this episode, I talked about my definitive guide to the best oud perfumes, over on my blog. Here's a link: persolaise.com...
I also took a sniff of L'Artisan Parfumeur Al Oudh (composed by Bertrand Duchaufour) and Montale Aoud Cuir D'Arabie.

I was rewatching this video after having tried some FdB scents. I find them to be in the camp you described as saying, “contains natural Oud but who knows the amount”. To my nose they smell as if they only waved an Oud chip above the blend. At most, a small part per thousands. Love your videos. Can’t wait for the year end Love at First Scent.

You’re very kind, Brooks, thank you. And yes... the quantity of natural oud is an exceedingly mystical number 😉

I bought a decant of Cuir d’Arabie several years ago. I had never experienced anything like this before and on one occasion of testing, I actually retched!
After watching this video, I dug it out and although the smell remains the same, it seems to have become more acceptable as my nose has developed. My wife absolutely hates this type of stuff and I’m not sure if I’ll be wearing it out, but I inexplicably became a compelled to purchase a bottle! I’ve also bought a bottle of Bulgari Eau Parfumée Au Thé Noir Eau de Cologne (intense) although I’ve searched, I can’t now find the video where you recommended it (although I’ve seen the blog). It’s always good to re-validate the reason for a blind-buy purchase during the wait for its arrival!

Being obsessed with "oriental" (can you still say that?) scents and now living in Doha, Middle East, wherever I go - be it shopping malls, be it Souq Waqif - I stumble over Oud. And for the first time, I really think I can tell a real Oud scent from the ones that only have the name in it because the ingredient became so popular. Anyways, fascinating material! Can smell a bit nasty at times though. ;-)

Al Oudh - Have it and like it quite a bit; I find it slightly subdued on my skin, but still noticeable presence. I just don't wear it that much for some reason. Cuminophile here. :)
Thirty-Three - Have it and love it. One of my most-worn perfumes. My favourite 'rose-oud'.
MFK Oud EdP - Found it underwhelming, more of a dull, watery patchouli accord.
L'Oudh - I liked it, found a 'plastic-petrol' note initially that's great. Need to revisit my sample.
    Haven't tried the others.
As for my favourites, I love Oud Palao. I prefer it over Oud Ispahan. Leather Oud is a favourite. Of course those Amouages are nice (the ones I have tried), but they are so much more than oud that I don't think of any of them as just 'oud' perfumes. I explored the MFK edps, and liked Velvet and Satin (more of an oud-amber), though Silk was nice as well. I think I am getting into an oud phase, maybe because it's the winter. I have Ottoman Empire II, but don't get what the hype is all about. Malle's The Night is great, I'm very keen to try The Moon. Nicolai has done a couple of nice ouds, but I haven't tried Oud Sublime. Mancera and Montale have just too many. Will Chanel have an oud in 2020?
Question for you: What are the best budget 'western' ouds in your view?
    Cheers from Toronto! :)

Elie Saab Essence N.4 Oud is a fragrance to die for, composed by none other than Francis Kurdjian. It was on major sale recently (less than $60) so I stocked up on it. Now, you can not find it anywhere. A true Laotian Oud scent complemented with a gentle bouquet of florals (minimal to no Rose), animalic but soooooo sensual. LOVE all the way, Please consider reviewing if you get your hands on it.

Cracking video my friend! I'm getting in to Aouds at the mo and my favs hands down are Black Afgano, L'oudh by Tauer and my No1 is The Night, albeit, the first 30 mins or so smell like horse poop! woah, I am glad I came by this channel .. I really am a fan of Oud note, since I live in Egypt and I am an Arab .. its a nature thing ..
my most favorite oud perfume though, I don't have a name for it, and it was a small bottle like a 6 ml decant bottle, and it had thick dark rose notes aside the Oud, and there seemed to be a hint of some bitter resins .. it started my hobby of collecting although I already had a thing for perfumes before I smelled that one .. but after I did I could no longer control that passion lol
I really hope to find something similar to it through out that never ending journey ..

I heard that the smell of oud oil also depends on whether or not the distiller soaked the logs in water prior to distilling. I think they do that to get a larger yield but apparently it gives the oil a very cheese-y facet

Great review. I really do love Oud scents. well not my girlfriend, she is not fond of it, to be honest, no one cares much about Oud at least the people I know, but as I said I love Oud a lot. there is a Danish brand Zarkoperfumes which make oud scents(real oud as they say) , matching Scandivanian weather and ppl I guess.have you check it, cool scents, do have some of them:) Montale has some great Oud scents as well and to be honest this one it is my absolute fave , bought even one extra as a back up,10 out 10 for me :)thx for the take on this*****.
