Islanders is a charming, minimalist city builder made by three game design students. I bought it for $5 but it has eaten 150 hours of my life, so you decide if that was a good investment or a huge mistake.

I think hyper optimized islands like this really show where the design of the game itself could be better. The game would be the most entertaining if it was accurately able to reward aesthetically pleasing islands. Obviously, it's not possible to do something like that perfectly, but there is definitely some potential left in this game specifically, and a lot more in similar games that might be made in the future.
That's an interesting perspective - I wonder is machine learning could be used in the value algorithm. The problem I foresee is that, if the game scored me on some relatively arbitrary guide to aesthetics, I'd be much more inclined to hover buildings around everywhere, checking their values. I think it would be more challenging to develop an understanding of what scores well.
@@TheConnorRoberson I personally find the aesthetics of high scoring islands to be really interesting on their own! I guess what I mean is, I like seeing what kind of island will grow out of playing optimally for score, and I think they usually end up looking pretty fantastic
I hope this game gets a lot of attention. Even though it's already kinda old, it's a lovely game that more people should buy.

I can't be that weird for taking a look at this haphazard hyperoptimized city and still thinking it looks like a nice place to live. Awesome watching how this turned out. Nice job man. Also got me to rethink my city planning as I never thought to eat negatives with the city centers or shamans before to pump the mansion and house points. It really pays off though, especially with those wall plateaus that let you double dip on that set up.
Yes! I think having a good intuition about taking negative scores is one of the key skills to develop to improve at Islanders. I try to always work on mine.
