- How to surf; the top 7 beginner surfing mistakes that I see are most easily fixed with a few technique adjustments. These small adjustments will lead to you catching more waves, progressing faster &, most importantly, having more fun in the surf!
I pull from different lessons I've been coaching over the past two weeks up here in Sydney to give you an insight into the surfing mistakes you might be making!
An intermediate-focused video can be expected next week!

Thanks for tuning in team! More advanced video coming next week... or I could do a workout follow along for those stuck indoors ... thoughts?
I personally would like both but if I had to have one, a more advanced version
i would like advanced video if possible
I used to surf (small FL waves) when I was a teenager but I'm now 48. I have two issues now, one is my shoulder damage and the second is I have asthma attacks. I don't have the swimming confidence anymore.
Is wearing some type of life vest an option? Have you met any other people who wear a vest for surfing?
@BrandonComedicSoup Best to hire different boards and find out which suit you imho
I was wondering, where do you serf? 😅
'when u think u should popup, then paddle a little more'...best advice that improved my surfin
Man I wish they had You Tube in 1979 when I was 11 and my cousins were "teaching" me to surf. They would just laugh at me and call me a kook when I made all these mistakes.
😂🙌🏽
Can't wait to put these to some actual surfing after the lockdown.
It is real, but they make it look like it’s a “pandemic” and it’s killing off people likes flys. Overdoing it

Did uuu?
I started surfing a week ago and practiced by myself without lessons. I watched this video before going to ocean and many times during the week. Definitely helped me a lot! Baby steps were passed shortly. Thank you Kale 🏄
🙏🏽🙏🏽
Great surfing tutorial video.
I recently took my first surf lesson and I am, of course, making all of these mistakes. Thank you so much for breaking everything down and making it easy to understand. I'm excited to start working on these corrections!!! :D
Man, I live in the middle of a desert. It’s definitely on my dream bucket list to surf and see the Ocean one day
Just wanted to share something I learned yesterday in the surf. Looking where you are going has had a surprising effect. I’ve been positioning well close to the peak but bottling it when in the right spot, either by stopping paddling or pulling off because the drop looked too steep or the wave too critical as I look back to the peak. But by looking in the direction of the breaking wave and not forward or up to the peak, it looks way less steep and more makeable and I have the confidence to go for it. Having broken my neck on a MTB and having my confidence broken, this was a game changer. My banana is also very very active now.
Nice
Just rediscovered my love of surfing after years off. Loving the videos, awesome content, although I feel like I could definitely be "the guy doing it wrong here" in most of these videos 😬😂 Cheers! 👍
Oh uau. Yes. I see my mistakes clearly. I’m bad at reading the waves and I don’t paddle enough. I’m scared without real need..
Love this - binging your vids, can't wait to get out and put it all into practice
Man I love watching these vids! Even though I’m not a beginner it’s awesome to see other people’s break downs of the basics and learn from the ground up how to have a solid foundation
Awesome!! Good perspective!!
mee too!
thank u so much for making these vids! They really help. Once im up on the board im great but for me its just the transiton from my belly to my feet and then picking which waves are best cause i seem to go for every wave good or bad.
hey Kale! re-watching this for the 3rd time across a few months...
now that I'm comfortable catching lots of waves, what I struggle the most with now is posture and the different style. Whether I try a more flowy-longboard style, or to perform more turns, I inevitably end up doing the "poopman". A new video dedicated to postures and styles would be SO helpful!!
Awesome tips! Your videos are SO helpful. Thank you :)
Thanks for taking the time to explain all that, super helpful!
Thank you Kale, your tutorials really help.
Love this channel - very informative in a practical way. Popping up more slowly and controlled has helped me tremendously. Before I was catching about 25% of the waves, now I am starting to catch about 75% and this gives me more opportunity to work on improving other parts. Awesome job, Kale!
🙌🏽
Great video. Those were pretty cool tips coach 🏄♂️🏄♂️🔥🔥
The only thing you missed was the how to surf without the wetsuit tutorial 😎
So helpful! This helped me improve my surfing significantly! Thanks!
Great video KB. I wanted to make one comment though in relation to the “pop up”. I don’t think you should use this term as it’s not a “pop up” but rather a transition to your feet. In slow motion there is four stages. 1. Push up through the arms, raising to chest above the board. 2. Plant the back foot by slightly bending the knee and rolling the same side hip upwards forming a tripod platform. 3. Slide the front foot up and place it in the middle of the board behind the hands. 4. Slowly rise and transition to your feet, pointing with your leading hand to where you want to go.
If you watch yourself or Kelly (in your vid), in slow motion, you will clearly see each phase. I’m not a coach but I had a lesson 20yrs ago when I was learning and this was what I was taught. I have taught my boys and friends kids this method and they all pick it up straight away. Cheers. Rowdy. 👍😃
Thanks for another great video! So informative & fun to watch.
Great insights n tutorials. As beginner, I repeatly rewatch this videos over n over again to remind myself.
Yew! Great vid. Your videos are getting better and better. This was very helpful for where my surfing is at right now. Cheers!
Thank you, Kales Broccoli. This tutorial helped me a lot.
🙌🏽
This video really helped me, i have been surfing for about a year now in and out but have struggled to get past this whole pooping up stage and this video made me realise the mistakes and fixed them thanks :)
Thanks for the advice
You are my favorite online coach Ever!! Thanks Kale.
You’re the best!
Thanks for this video ! I just had my first surf lesson yesterday and your video definitely helps me for my second try today. ❤🏄♀️🙏🏼
Awesome vid! Thanks for the tips!
Great video, thanks! I've been trying to work on making my pop-ups faster and failing pretty bad. I guess it is what it is lol.
Thanks. Great tips. Love the last one especially. And the paddle speed tip is helpful as I am transitioning to a smaller board.
Your videos are always helpful!
Loving the channel bro. The tips are super informative really appreciate it!
Thank you!!
These were some great suggestions, Thanks!
Kale your rad thanks for the great surf tips 🏄🏽♂️🤙🏼
Another 'en pointe' presentation. It's taken me a while, but I think I've consistently eliminated looking down and now always looking at the wave as I'm paddling in. It is a 'game changer'. Also now paddling, pretty much, without fatigue and with more speed - a lot of effort improving paddling, but very liberating. Tips on positioning and what to look for in wave colour and texture are spot on. I'm still struggling a bit with speed generation and bigger waves, but it's all a work in progress - one that is so much fun!
That’s so good to hear Rog!!!
Greatest tips ever and the most relatable from when I started surfing, hoping to regain my skills and reapplying these techniques when I get back to the water! Thank You for the most useful tips!!!!!
🙌🏽
Great video! Thank you.
Been surfing about a month and this really helped. Looking forward to putting them into practice tomorrow. Cheers man
I hope you had fun!!
That was fun, great job :) Merry Christmas!
Thank you for this!! All of these are great!
I used to body board as a kid and quit 10 years ago but relatively recently started up surfing. I was still able to paddle properly, duck dive, select waves, etc. and that has honestly helped so much lol I’d hate to have to start from the very scratch as an adult. These videos are helpful though to think about what I could be doing wrong and get myself to (hopefully) improve quicker
You are an amazing teacher and a damn smooth surfer. Love your channel!
Thanks!!
Sliding the feet through during pop up tips were very helpful out in the ocean the other day! It made a huge difference in my progression! I would usually pop up too fast that I loose my balance
Awesome Bel!!
Very helpful! Thanks
My top tip would be don't fight the white water when paddling out, in addition to getting tired too quickly you will often be in the way of someone on a wave. Find the channel without broken water to paddle out.
So much truth to this!! Getting used to sitting up on the board made life much much easier to get that rest between waves.
So true Ivan. I started sitting on my boogie board before getting back into surfing an it is such a relief - also somewhat relaxing. It took a while to master it but so rewarding
Dude you should bring the surfer guy from that 2002 interview, wapah, get pitted dude.. 🤣
details of the slide up was way better than the 99 % of the stuff on CZcams. Big thanx
plenty of great tips from this channel! I think this was the best one! Also doing Yoga sun salutations helps you slow down and smooth out your get up!
really nice, now i'm beginning and thanks for these recommendations:)))
Great film cheers mate
Thanks
Great video !

Oh my god I found this so helpful I gotta give this dude my sub 👏🏽
I can’t wait to learn to surf 🏄🏾♀️!
The eye trick is very helpful
Great videos, love it
Awesome video!
Some of ur best work
Hey from the USA. Thanks for the tips. This video just started playing I didn't no it was about surfing. But I learn about swimming technics and not getting caught in a rip. I only learn to swim under water and never learn to float. But I've taught so many kids to swim underwater and they learn to swim on top of the water
very good video, keep it up!!
Love it!!!
Been trying for a couple of months now and really struggling. Thanks for vids hopefully get it right soon!
🙌🏽
Great tips! You see so many people making these mistakes
Im just starting to surf and this vid rlly help thx
You’re welcome
advanced video is my vote!
Cheers for the vid and thanks for the tips
Thanks Jacko 🤙🏽
Also what is the place you surf at it looks like a break from the tv show blue water high
Thanks for your interesting tutorials. Could you explain how to get speed on your shortboard. Thanks a lot Kales
Finally a good surfing channel
Good info thanks.
Thanks James!!
TY ! I've had 8+ sessions with a coach where they'd push me in order for me to catch a wave. How do I get started on myself though? Based on what I learned from you, I think it's 1) positioning, reading the waves 2) paddling, fast enough to catch it. I'm more worried about the second. I worry I don't have enough strength to paddle fast enough. And how much of strength does it actually take?
Love this video! I definitely look down too much and too straight. Been doing the mobility routine which has helped with my tight hips
Awesome so good!! Got some more workouts coming 😁😁
@@KalesBroccoli I look forward to it. I also went surfing today and really concentrated on looking up, it helped so much! Thank you :)
Fantastic… I pretty much did all those mistakes during my last lesson 🤣.. but I did some great rides too
Thank for the Video. There are Great.
Thanks mate
I’m not a beginner but this is still cool to watch
Where was this filmed? Love it.
Great tips! #2 and #3 are related since you can't practice reading the waves if you can't see them coming in while you are on your belly! Cheers!
Great point!!!
I love surfing aaaaahh
Nice vid👊
Hi Kale. I’ve had two lessons after a 25 yr break. I’m nose diving whilst paddling into the wave occasionally.
LEGEND
love it
Thank you so much. So helpful. I would love to hear something about how to turtle roll. But, very helpful. Especially about looking where you want to go.
Flip your board upside down hold your rails, and wrap your feet around your rails, then when the wave is over, flip it right side up and hop on 🤙👍
I see what you did there, the crown on top of your head was no mistake :D Mr sea Viking🥦
I realized I used to looked down a lot too and quickly tried to correct myself, mostly because I sometimes nosed dive when I tried to stand up, so when I looked down I tried to make sure my weight wasn't too far forward and my board wasn't going to nose-dive. I guess with more practice, this move will become muscle memory and I can avoid looking down at all times.
Nice!!! 🥦 👑
it will be good a video about training out of water
Multiple videos here on the channel for that :)
@@KalesBroccoli cool! Thx bro
All the best to your channel & life.
Thank you so much 🙂
Nice
I had two introductory surf lessons a month ago and got as far as riding a wave in the kneeling position (last step before standing up). Is this a good or bad progress? What wave duration should a beginner go for? I had breaking waves about 8 seconds long at most; some were less than 5 seconds. I learned the hard way that a wave less than 0.5 m doesn't work at all.
He makes a good point on the pop up to pause for a quick moment in prone however this is wave specific. There are times where the wave is breaking FAST and there’s no time to pause ha
personally I feel that the slack arms and upright stance along with smooth manouvers looks the coolest when surfing.
JJF
Love the vids! It's really helping me maintain my knowledge as we still cant access the beaches here in San Diego.
Could you do a video about best ways to truly surf a twin fin? Or the dynamics of riding a fish?
For sure! I’ll have some board focused stuff coming soon!
@@KalesBroccoli awesome! I'm looking forward to it!
