  • I go over the 14 remaining A presses in the 120 star ABC run, as well as several other ABC details. As of today (November 20th, 2022), the 120 star ABC run takes 14 A presses, consisting of 11 unique A presses. The run is planned for the original Japanese Nintendo 64 version, as this is the version that minimizes the total A press count.

      Now we just need a way to enter it without A presses. I feel that, even without BLJs, the endless stair case is our only hope. That's the only place that I can see that's both high enough to propel Mario into the clock and has enough potential for building up speed. That being said, the options for indeed building up speed are extremely limited. Maybe if there's a way to carry speed after dying in BitS?

      Although TTC is way more complex that JRB, since we have way more objects to use in TTC it's actually been easier to complete it 0xA than JRB. Due to how simple the stage is and how few objects there are to use, opening the chests 0xA has always been way more difficult to figure out than TTC, since it was only a matter of time until we found a 0xA strat there.

    it seems so crazy that we've figured out how to conquer TTC 0x, but we still can't get the JRB chest star
    EDIT: this community is amazing! as of february 15, the JRB chest star is 0.5x

      it's crazy that ttc is possible but not that surprising: in ttc you have so many quirky objects that you can manipulate in the craziest of ways, in jrb you have basically nothing, not even a bob-omb to clone

      @@skibot9974 As shown in the video, collecting some of the stars while landing on the spinning platforms displaces Mario's spawn location in Peach's Castle so that he lands on the ledge rather than the floor, which means that A presses aren't needed to jump up to re-enter the level. The level is still entered 6 times, but 3 of those times don't require an A press.

    What kills me about the jrb chest star is that it seems like there _should_ be SO much to work with there.
    The star spawns super low compared to the spawn
    There's water to make momentum saving tricks on the table
    There's SEVERAL different entities that could hurt Mario, triggering something else that was setup before
    Goombas to possibly bounce off of.
    Even a shell (at the other end of the level) to make HOLP/Clone usage theoretically possible.
    Yet somehow despite everything, nothing can seem to align for it

    Edit: It is well worth noting that nothing in this comment is meant to be a suggestion, but rather a bunch of tools that exist in the level that FEEL like they should amount to something, but are rendered un-helpful in some way or another

      There's no loading point to unload the shell unfortunately, and goombas will disappear if you move away from their home.

    There is no star that infuriates me more in regards to this challenge than that JRB chest star. It passes through my mind at nights when I'm trying to sleep. It's so close yet so impossibly far

      Dive Rollout? 24 units too low.
      Cloning? No way to grab the water shell's vacant object slot.

      @ACPlay18 Yep. The Fire Sea console 0x is coming, and after that, it feels like the ABC crew could do anything at this point. JRB chests seems to have the most options (the goombas, a possible cloning method, a way to activate VSC without a ledge or maybe even having the demo collect the star are all probable)

    So it seems like the problem with most (if not all) of these is the lack of objects than be exploited for A saves. That being said, the fact that you can pull off LLL Elevator Tour 0x means that sometime we need to see beyond the boundary of possible and impossible.       Every star that is in a room where cloning is possible is 0x, or 0.5x if it's a water level. lack of cloning is the primary issue with the remaining a press saves

    the year is 2094, the abc crew has saved every A press. all except one. the JRB chest star. they have spent tens of thousands of hours trying to get just a few more units of height but to no avail. they’ve tried every combination of cloning, HOLPs from other levels, going across parallel universes to no avail. all because some japanese developer in the mid 1990s decided to place a star slightly higher than some others

      You can get that star without jumping _at all_ in the DS version, so either the hitbox of the star changed, the star was lowered a bit, or the hitbox of the slide-kick rollout was changed

    Kind of wild that a full third of the remaining a presses are in the TTC lobby room. If someone found a way to enter TTC 0x, not only would you save the three presses from entering, but also would remove the need to use a version with spawn displacement (and the 0.5 press for it), meaning you could switch to Wii VC and save an *additional* A press from rising platforms in BitFS.

      Friendly reminder that saving the TTC entry A presses needs to not update the holp, otherwise the only A presses it saves are the initial entry for Get a Hand (1x) and the reentry after Get a Hand (0.5x).

      It feels as if there should be some means of exploiting the properties of the endless staircase to gling Mario to TTC, WMOtR, and RR with horizontal momentum.
      There's probably with more technical understanding that can explain why that can't work, though...

      @@alexpotts6520 TTC reentry is agreed to be impossible. In order for the TTC reentry A presses to be saved TTC entry 0xA (that doesn't update the HOLP) needs to be found, and that's also VERY VERY unlikely.

    You guys are absolutely incredible. Italo Calvino said that nothing intrigued him more than a person setting harsh boundaries to itself and going until the last consequences with it. It proves determination and honor to oneself. If you can play a jumping game without jumping you can provide a really beautiful metaphor to inspire people to go for the unthinkable. You already did. For that and for hours of fun and amaze thank you really really much.

    In my opinion, here are the A presses ranked from most likely to be saved to least likely.
    1: BitFS Pole. Currently being worked on and by far the most likely to be saved. Bully battery can be extremely powerful, as demonstrated by the LLL elevator star.
    2: JRB Chest Star. This is the new Top O' the Town. So many ideas that just barely don't work. Most likely is a way to build up enough hyperspeed, since you need about 300 speed I believe and can only get around 200 with current starts. It's just so close and has been worked on so much that I feel this is pretty likely to be saved.
    3: THI Red Coins #1. While the red coin cave may seem desolate, there is surprisingly much to work with. It is possible to gain hyperspeed using Wiggler up above the red coins, but currently there is no way to clip under the floor with that hyperspeed. There is also the option to use the hanging-ceiling upwarp to reach the highest red coin in only a single A press, but it doesn't seem possible to reach the other red coin from there.
    4: WMotR Cannon. Notice I don't specify which cannon since I feel like I feel like there could be strategies to save either one (but not both). It might be possible to use the infinite wing cap height glitch to save the second cannon shot, but the problem is that the wing cap doesn't last long enough to pull it off. The second cannon platform is also located not to far from the starting cloud, so it might be reachable, but the problem there is that you have no way to open the cannon. Falling off or exiting the course after opening the cannon won't work, since falling off takes you outside the castle and it requires an A press to enter the stage. The only option would be to die, but it currently doesn't seem possible to die 0x after opening the cannon.
    5: SSL Elevator (for secrets). This star can be collected in 1x A Presses from the bottom entrance as well as the top. Currently the only thing blocking us is the pole all the way at the top. There are some homing amps nearby, but other than that there really isn't much. There is not a single grabbable object inside the pyramid, so cloning or HOLP shenanigans are impossible.
    6: THI Red Coins #2. I find this one less likely to save than the other THI A press. The red coin in the corner is just way too high, unless Wiggler hyperspeed ends up working out.
    7/8: Enter TTC #2/#3. The 2nd and 3rd TTC entrances are more likely to be saved than the first one because of spawning displacement. The big problem is that there seems to be no way to do that for the remaining stars. Stomp on the Thwomp is very far away from any walls, but I feel like it's the best candidate for spawning displacement because of the nearby Thwomp. Of course, that's only if it doesn't get overridden by another object when the castle loads, and there is no known way to conserve momentum when collecting a star other than using a wall.
    9: SSL Elevator (for pyramid star). This star takes 2x A Presses from the bottom entrance, one of which is the aforementioned pole and the other of which is either to jump up some stairs or to reach the star platform (both of these can be solved with a Star Dance Clip, but we can only use one 100 coin star). We would need to find a way to get past the pole AND get up one of these platforms, which is why this one is much less likely than for the secrets star.
    10/11: Enter RR/WMotR. There just isn't much to work with on the top floors of the castle. Even though the entrance to BitS is much higher up, there doesn't seem to be any way to reach the entrances from there. It is possible to use C-up sliding on the banister, but it's so short that you barely gain any speed.
    12: Enter TTC #1. Less likely than the other two TTC entrances and the RR/WMotR entrances. The clock is much farther away from the BitS platform than the other entrances, so even if we find a way gain enough speed to enter RR/WMotR, it would be much harder to redirect it into TTC.
    13: PSS Box Star. There's just nothing to work with. The star is in the middle of an empty room in the middle of an empty level. Using the demo won't work either, since the demo-Mario does not use A as one of his inputs. There may be some way to gain hyperspeed using the slide, but it seems unlikely.
    14: WMotR Other Cannon. Once again, just nothing to work with. The highest cloud is just way too high to reach and even if you get up there, how would you collect all of the red coins without flying? Definitely the least likely to be saved.

      Reminder that Spawning displacement can't be used to get any more TTC reentries. 2/3 of them are completely surrounded in a cage. And the final one, Stomp on the Thwomp, has no wall nearby to use kick/punch recoil. The ABC crew agrees that if the reentry A presses are going to be saved, TTC entry will have to be found, saving all 3 A presses and the 0.5 for GaH (unless it updates the HOLP).

      Also, JRB needs 262 speed. Currently, 181 is achievable.
      For 0.5, around 210 speed is necessary. But, the current strategy to get the 181 is not compatible with 0.5 because it uses punches, which can't be done while holding A.

    It's worth noting that the 0.5 A-Press in TTC is used to avoid a repetition of the A-Press used to enter TTC, rather than actually being necessary to acquire the star within the level.
    So if 0 A-Press TTC entry is ever found, that 0.5 A-Press in TTC should indirectly be saved along with it.

      I have completely given up hope by now, despite how much progress has been made. In less than a decade, we've shaved *nearly 200* A-presses off the Initial Run-through, but by now we've hit the tightest bottleneck yet. We have been scraping the bottom of the barrel for at least a year already, and I fear that we've finally run out of momentum, that we've run out of stamina, *that we have run out of Glitches.*

      From what I've seen it seems like there is some serious development going on for the BiFS pole a press but that is only one of the fourteen a presses to save.
      I think this video is just more of a documentation to get everyone up to date since you would be getting tons of people inquiring about the a-presses given the recent developments since the last time a video like this was made and not making this video simply because progress has stalled.

      @@sock7896 yes, it's going to be using fast bully battery to get pu speed plus rotational displacement from the tilting square platforms to get past the pole.
      I don't understand bully battery much but from what I understand bully physics use a busted implementation of elastic collisions where the speed you get from getting hit by a bully depends on the bully's speed and vice versa, so the idea is to increase the bully's speed as much as possible, which apparently can be done with the death cancel thing. it's also an extremely difficult trick. I believe bully battery has been talked about to get past the pole and get the volcano star for at least a couple of years now and the latter has only just been pulled off.

      JRB chests is in that sweet "it will need a new breakthrough, but maybe it's possible" range. Maybe Mario could gain an extremely high amount of speed and effectively warp there from a completely different part of the map in a single frame, for instance? Whereas WMotR is just never going to happen.

      ​@@alecrutz6979 That's basically what the current plan is. First you can gain speed on one of the pillars near the beginning of the level, then reactivate that speed in the cave. Then, there's a rock in the cave that would give enough height to collect the star with 262 speed. Currently, the most speed that can be gotten in JRB 0xA is 181.

      But it's also disjointed from the gradual build up of tech and strats that is the ABC. If it were to be found, I don't doubt the category would be just renamed "ACE-less ABC".

    I believe this project might be the greatest example of human ingenuity applied throughout the gaming history. Congratulations to everyone involved for such awe-inspiring achievements, it can't be overstated how incredible it has been to see this over the years. I still remember laughing back when this started, thinking how absurd it was that one would take over 20 minutes setting up Goombas just to save an A press. Back then, I really thought it was a joke which was taken too seriously. Little did I know... It really became something really unlike anything else.

    Seems to me the biggest potential save here would be finding a way to access TTC, RR, and WMotR without the A button. That would be 5 A press saves, but it would also mean no more need to use spawning displacement in TTC, which would remove the need for the leeched A press in TTC (technically saving another A press overall) and open up the possibility of using a version other than the JP original for this challenge.
    The obvious idea would be to find a way to build up speed and launch Mario from the deck with the 70 star door, but to do that without a BLJ or any obvious usable object seems quite tricky indeed. I look forward to the day when someone finds a solution to this part in particular. It would be the single biggest save in terms of percentage of remaining A presses knocked out in the history of this challenge.

    Calling it now: The way the ABC will end is that a large team will work together for years to find an ACE setup. Then once it's found, within hours someone from the ABC crew will TAS it 0xA, and the ABC will be over. (With ACE, you could write code to map the "jump" function to L instead of A, or write code to press L to teleport to the nearest star, or write code to press L to upwarp, or many other possibilities.)

    I just started binging this channel again a few days ago and became curious on how many A presses were left considering the last update video was 2 years ago, and now I'm hit with this pleasant surprise!
    Crazy to see that all TTC stars are achievable now and it's the entrance holding back a portion of the ABC. Seeing the progress since I started watching around 2017-18 is fantastic, which was only the halfway point from when the ABC started to now. So excited for the feat of this challenge to be complete, the almost decade journey has been phenomenal for the sm64 community

    Seeing that updated wall of GiFs was just beautiful.
    When I first found out about this little puzzle it was already down to 19.
    Now, its down to 14. Barring a major game breaking discovery, I can only see that being 11, and that's being generous. Some of these stars just have nothing to work with. In decending order of hope:
    BitFS has the Bully idea building. Now that I've seen this work in LLL, maybe the SC spots in BitFS will get us through. Though if you thought LLL was complex...
    JRB: To save we need 262SPD. We are capable of generating 181 (Thanks for correcting me.) That float point seem where the water bordures air has interesting properties, and I haven't given up on the idea of reactivating sliding speed, then free falling for a single frame back into the water, rinse and repeat (get it? Rinse?! OK I'll see myself out)
    THI coins. An idea I've seen floated around of spawning a 100 coin star to skip the first A press, (Alternatively a way to ledge grab after being burn hopping.), OR use Wiggler Hyperspeed to do a negative jump through the floor, and conserve that speed to skip the second A press. Both ideas have been rigorously tested though and that seems to be a dead end.
    Its been amazing seeing this journey, and I've dabbled in TASing enough to know just how much work this all takes. Brava to the ABC crew!

    Hey, I know you probably get tons of requests, but I'm insatiably curious about something after watching an old video of yours about collecting a star during the demo sequence. What would it look like if you used one demo's inputs in another demo? The results probably wouldn't be anything that special but I think it'd be an interesting thing to see at least.

    Watch the WMOTR A presses be saved thanks to the fact that the cloud at the beginning of the level is a hangable ceiling

      Someone will probably find a hidden property of hangable ceilings that makes using the second cannon avoidable. I know it's vague but I say it will play a part in saving at least an A press.

      @@AB-uj2vb 1. that hangable cloud is on one of the lowest platforms accessible
      2. you need a platform underneath the cloud (there is absolutely no way that's possible) and to be in the jump state to grab it
      3. i don't know what you think is going to happen once we have mario hanging on a ceiling... the only thing Mario can do while in that state is slowly climb on the ceiling or drop off, which would drop him into the abyss

    If the crew get to take out all of the a presses but the WMotR ones I wouldn’t be sad actually. I feel like the ABC is more about beating a game which resorts so much in jumping without any jumps, which would be accomplished in this case.

    I believe that in total the lowest the a press count could ever get is 1.
    JRB TotOC has been solved to 0.5.
    SSL PP/ItAP I believe could be done with an Amp clip with some "magic" movement from the bottom to get the top star.
    THI WRC if you fell through you would save one and with some kind of movement save the other. This probably is impossible though.
    For PSS ! a speed glitch was found in this course. If there was some way to fall off the slide in the perfect way with that speed you could fly to the star and ground pound, collecting the star
    WMotR requires an a press. Flying is required and to fly you need to press a. The other a press has a little wiggle room with unknown strategies but it seems impossible.
    BitFS has a totally insane stratagy in the works involving a bully. I don't know whats happening with it now but if it works it will be something like LLL ETitV. Its also saved in the WiiVC version via rounding errors.
    For all 3 of the entrance a presses for TTC, RR and WMotR, if there were a way to build speed in the tippy top section of upstairs, they could be saved.
    ETitV could have a solution for shindou editions involving some kind of burning on poles or RLBs but it seems unlikely. Would save a ton of time off the final run though.
    In order of how likely I think each one is:
    PSS, BitFS, SSL, THI 1, entrances to TTC, RR and WMotR, ETitV, THI 2, WMotR 1, WMotR 2.
    Edit: Added ETitV as its technically unsolved, moved BitFS and SSL up by 1 on my list as I've changed my mind and used slightly more grammer.

      @@lasagnapig630 there was a gap of three years from 2019-2022 where there were no a press saves. during that time, both bully battery and GPCC's were tested to complete ETitV and the 3 TTC stars in 0 a presses. since feburary 2023 there hasnt been an a press save. there might never be another a press. i presented every way i think an a press could be saved. im a casual viewer of the a button challenge so some of what i say could be garbage. i am optimistic that both PSS and BitFS will get their a presses saved though.

    I notice lots of comments saying that the simplicity of some stars makes them difficult to solve, meanwhile TTC was conquered because there were more elements to use.
    Maybe if you designed an unsolvable level in 0 A Presses and you added lots of elements to the world, you could develop new tech there. It seems easier to create new strategies when you have stuff to work with, so creating a challenge might help the cause.
    Especially when you bear in mind that TTC was a very vertical level, crafting a couple of vertical Towers could be fun
