I have been in the wrapping business since 2005, under extreme weather conditions, 3m last about 12 months, chinese vinyl last about 10 months. 3m costs $40 to $60 per meter, chinese vinyl cost $70 to $90 per 25 meters roll. put labour aside, will cost around $1000 for a full wrap in 3m, where the chinese vinyl will cost $50 for a full wrap. Similar life. After 12 months in hot climate, 3m glue residue is just as bad as any other brand, 3m will start to crack within 2 years on the roof and bonnet. If you have a white car, 3m glue residue will turn the paint yellow, can not be cleaned, you have to repaint your car. Chinese vinyl is thicker, very hard to remove but will not damage paint. FYI, just like iphone, 3m vinyl is made in china. Oracle is made in Germany. Out of 3m, avery, hexis, oracle, Hexis has the best value/quality ratio. You can change wrap every 6 months for 10 years, still cheaper than one single 3m wrap. Vinyl not recommanded to keep for more than 2 years, all of them are a B***h to remove when they are older than 1 year. Also air release is not really relevant, because all brands are now offering application liquid or gel, that will make any vinyl temporary none sticky, you can wrap faster than dry applying air release vinyl. 3m last about 6 months in Australia and offers no warranty in Queensland region.
Thanks man great info I'm just getting started as a wrapper
Hey mate, where do you find the cheap Chinese wrap? Got some things I want to wrap and the 3m and vivid is out of the price range
@@charleskazzi8816 Ebay, AliBaba just like discussed in this video. Happy Wrapping!
how much wisdom in his words
Gosh, that sounds really bad in terms of durability! No way one can afford yearly wraps.
Good video. I ordered Chinese wrap for a small project thinking "wow it looks easy on CZcams". I nearly lost my mind after several attempts. Couldn't get it to work at all. I basically put my project aside thinking wrapping is only reserved only for pros. Some time had passed and I felt brave again and ordered some Vvivid wrap off Amazon. I CAN'T PUT INTO WORDS WHAT A DIFFERENCE THE VVIVID WAS!! The air release actually worked and with a little heat applied for tough corners, it molded flawlessly and I felt like a pro. I'm yet to try 3m stuff, but only amazing things to say about Vvivid wrap at this point.
That first one (green sandpaper) belongs on a skateboard
I have worked in a lot a trades over the years and following you now I am confident that I will add another cool trade to my list. Thanks for putting yourself out there CK. No question that your a PRO bud!
Thanks for going over every single aspect of each of these. Your vid was straight to the point and good content. Def make it easier to make a decision of what brand to go with!
Lol, for real? I must have seen a different video... In a dude slllloooowwwllllyyy babbled the same three points ad nauseum... The entire video could have been about 3 minutes and nothing would have been lost.
Well man. You got me to try out my first wrap ever.
In that statement I think I chose one of the worst vehicles to do my first hood wrap on.
2009 BMW x5 xdrive30i where the hood and grille is all in one. Lmfao.
Take about throwing my self to the wolves.
Anyway after about 4 hrs, I got it all down, isent the best, not for my first time.
Buy you are right, it's like going to the gym as you said.
I'm not a big guy, 130lbs is all 5'9.
So lots of props to you for doing this your self.
Was a very big task for me to do. Thanks for all your video's.
Was a great learning curve that's for sure.
I should have done my 88 crx si first haha, more flat of a hood.
And yes I did the hood in a 6x5 foot piece all in one shot, no knifeless tape.
Keep them videos coming man
this was actually pretty informative i appreciate it. for sure going to put my money down for vivid or a 3m

Excellent presentation, thanks!
I would love to see a comparison of these films with Avery SWF. I found that film really nice to wrap with. Would love to see how much it differs (if at all).
Nice comparison gives me an idea what route to take when purchasing wrap this answers so many questions thanks for the vid👍
Thank you for this. I was planning on trying to wrap my car for the first time. You saved me hours of frustration. I'm going to buy the 3M. It doesn't help to be cheap on vinyl. Thanks Brother!
Thank you for the valuable info!
Good breakdown. Thank you.
Wow, What A pro, But Thats So Cool That Every Thing When You Go In Detail There Is Soo Much Of It
I wrapped my brother in laws Camaro roof with eBay color shift wrap and it did just like those and kept bubbling up randomly. After it was finished it didn’t look half bad being the first thing I’d ever wrapped. He left it on for about a month then decided to remove it and it left all the adhesive behind and it had sat outside in the Texas sun all day.
I just started watching your videos as I am thinking of trying it out. My family owns a 3bay shop that isn’t being used but it needs a major clean. Gonna try to do my old trusty 110kmile rsx type s I guess
Hi Christian,
Here I go with technical jargon. Adhesive is originally applied to the back at the adhesive coater. What helps to smooth out the adhesive as it's being applied to the back in called a doctor, usually made out of pure brass. What has been learned to make vinyl have air release, is buy getting a doctor bar that has a pattern cut into, usually by high tech lathes. If you can get a slight patter into the adhesive once the backing is laminated to the vinyl, the adhesive transfers to the vinyl, and the pattern in the adhesive transfers to the vinyl. Once that's done, and you have a slight pattern in the adhesive, that pattern will create air release. This is why you're working with a certain type of vinyl, and you comment that it has great air release, that's how the air release was created. Man, do I wish someone would let you into the manufacturing coating site to let you see the whole process as it's done. Of all the people I know, you would appreciate the process so much, and you wouldn't believe it. Vivid, or 3M ? If you're watching, please show Christian the coating process. He's be dazzled....er, He'd bedazzled ? Aw, to hell with it ! He'd be impressed ! LOL
My very best,
Scott
I spent a good 30 minutes yesterday (and plenty of other times before that) wondering how they get the air release function, I'm a way that is hardly visible. What you described is along the lines of what I had imagined, but Now I know! Thank you!
I don't own a car and don't even have my license but I enjoy so luch6the way you talk about your wraps 🧐
Very good and informative video. I'm getting ready to order some wrap for my ninja and this was great to see the differences between 3M, Vivid, etc... Thanks for doing this video! Who would you recommend for purchasing 3M or vivid from? I'm looking for a lime green matte finish.
I've always got mine from fellers
Thank you, exactly what I needed to know. I bought a Chinese brand that began with a D, I forget the name. Absolutely horrible. It was actually see through. Every color shows right through.
Do not blame China
Blame the purchaser who came to China and ordered teh cheapest crap he could get to make huge profit back at home
@@yourdeal2408 that's china's fault for making it the way It is
@@yourdeal2408 Ya don't blame China for filling the world with garbage
I bought some random brand, 'DIYAH' Carbon Fiber, the application SUCKS, it's so hard to do, BUT it does look good and lasts really well through weather and sun, doesn't take off paint or whatever. It's just the application that's hard, it had air release and all that and it worked super well; but horribly sticky. I mean, I've had 3 people ask me if I got the hood wrapped or if it's real carbon fiber. I wrapped my dads Land Cruiser with Vvivid matte black, and oh man was it SO much easier to apply. So basically, if you have no clue what you're doing, get the expensive stuff. The Chinese stuff is hard to put on.
My first time wrapping a car was with a roll of 50M $250 Chinese wrap. I agree with you it was SOOO hard to wrap the car because Chinese wrap is so STICKY. Second time wrapping I used Vivid wrap was SOO much easier literally night and day
Good info brother - we are about to get back to color change so this is crucial to see.
Awesome evaluation... your favorite vinyl is...?
I only needed this video, but it was super helpful for the questions I was asking myself. I was indecisive between 3M and Vvivid. I chose Vvivid for my application. Thank you. Keep up the great work.
(You'll show up in my "suggested" now so I will probably watch more.)
the education he gives u on brands is % of the learning ..Eventually the doing is the other 75%
I do my own wrapping and alot people say it looks professional, i basically learn from videos like this but i tell people the most important thing about wrapping is the brand.
I'm wanting to learn how to do my own cars as well. How long did it take you to learn? Was it hard your first time and is it still hard now. How long did it take your first time and how long does it take now tht you've done it a couple times? Have u ever tried plasti dip? I just dip my car for the first time. It came out ok for my first time. But if u don't know what it is, it's basically a paint that u can peel off like a wrap. I'd appreciate your response bro. Thanks in advance
@@devonbrown239 it actually took me like a week to get it down right but still till this day I have a hard time doing really tight corners, they are tricky
What brand? My buddy is insistent on vvivid because he's going to need 120ft for his truck and any other brand will be double the price.
Please! I need to know the name or part number for the blue vinyl second and third from the top on the wall behind you!!! Thanks 😬
looks like avery diamond blue. I used it on a corvette. good vinyl, it is easy to loose the gloss finish while forming because of the glitter.
Great information as always.
With my growing skills in this trade I am learning that Avery is far more forgiving in stretching than Vvivid. I did my entire car in Avery and did not have any challenges doing my motorcycle tank in Vvivid it's been extremely difficult to stretch - I will now switch to Avery and see if I have better luck.
Lately after using HEXIS for 2-3 years now for most wraps, every time going back using Oracal and M3 when a client want a specific color, it's quite fragile, very thin in comparison. Vvivid does have nice carbon fiber tho, worth the extra thickness.😅
Hey, will you be uploading the TESLA model 3 mirror chrom delete ?
Oh.. you should see the vinyl.. that we use here in Argentina... No air release... A really painfull wrap ...
Headache!!
Very informative! Thank you
Do you always need to use heat to apply vinyl as a standard protocol and does it always need to be stretched? I know Mirror looks better stretched but besides surface prep, what’s the easiest kind of vinyl to install and why? I know colors act different and images can’t be over stretched but in a nutshell what are the rule of thumb?
**QUESTION** Would the 3M be good for aluminum siding on an old pontoon boat?
HEY CHRIS I HAD A QUESTION ! Is Avery Dennison a good brand? I want to do a chrome delete on my car and the upper trim is long and curved so it keeps getting some bubbles and it may be because of the brand I got off eBay it was no brand but it had some air release technology but not good enough it seemed like. What do you suggest I use for my chrome delete project brand wise and do you think gloss black would look better or satin or matte on a black c300 lol I know it’s personal preference b as the pro what do you recommend to look clean and like it came all black! Love your videos and informative help
Hello, please do a comparison like this with Hexis and 3M
Hey nice video I’m thinking about wrapping my cars window visor with vivid only because I don’t like the color that it came in would it hold up
Presentation style is great and easy to watch - nice to not listen to the stilted cadence and inflection that seems to be the default tech/product review go to on youtube channels.
Also great to have professional insight of experience as well as technical data.

What's your suggestion for wrapping a Can Am X3? Going offroad and to the sand dunes...
Christian, what are you using as the wall mounts for rolls of material. It looks like curtain rod hangers, but doesn’t appear to be curtain rods. Thanks!
How do they all compare in longevity? Do the cheaper ones fade, does the 3m fade at all?
Thanks for the info helped me a lot. Can you please tell me where can I buy the original vvivid+ please
I see you wrapped a BMW i3. I am planning to wrap my i3's hood and roof. Anything I need to do special for the work? Thanks
This may be out of topic but hey I just want to share that I do some windows tinting and I found out that it has exactly same case like this vinyl wrapping stuff. The Chinese cheapest one always sucks like weird bubble, super sticky and the worst part is it just won't shrink well or even a little bit nicely like the branded one or atleast the one that a bit expensive.
I bought the exact same green from vivviid and for some reason is extremely tacky. To the point where when I try to pull it off from my car it nearly rips. Is that normal?

im glad i wasn't the only one .. i thought i was wrapping my mirror caps wrong....
I'm no wrapper. But a car enthusiast for life. I gotta say, this stuff is so very satisfying to watch being handled, applied, peeled and ripped. LOL. I might be a wrapper soon.
I have a question maybe you can answer. I have a small boat made out of polyethylene that I want to apply a wrap in each side. The area is pretty flat and will be an easy install but as you know vinyl doesn’t like sticking to the PE. I heard about the 3M vinyl primer 94, they say it will help the vinyl stick to the boat. My question is if I put a coat of the primer on the boat will the vinyl stick instantly when it touches it or will I be able to reposition the vinyl it if needed?
Thanks
Great video, I was looking for a video with this info like a long time ago, thanks for explaining it so nice 👍🏻

I wanted to buy some cheap wrap for a volvo v70. I am looking at aliexpress and they got 20m for $140 including sgipping for some glossy deep blue. I also wanted to get the 5d carbon wrap for $60 for 3m for the hood
Does changing the complete Color of your car with a vinyl wrap mean you need to register the car in the new Color? I'm from South Africa and I was told by the local authority that Changing the Color of the car even though vinyl wrap is temporary means you have to also change it on the vehicle logbook/registration certificate as it's illegal to drive around with it not being done
Hey CKwraps your videos are pretty neat and I respect your craftsmanship, have you ever thought about wearing kneepads while you work? I imagine you have to kneel especially for fenders and bumpers so why not save your knees? Kneeling on concrete is HORRIBLE for your knees and some padding will save you some knee problems when you get to your 50's. Just something to consider
CK Wraps, Im looking for a Vvivid gloss black for a black BMW, which Vvivid would you suggest/recommend that comes closest to the original BMW black. Its for the doorpilars. Thanks love your work.
Use Avery gloss black...Vvivid has no play unless you buy their tack reducer
Can you do a video about how to avoid scratching the vinyl during application or possibly removing the scratches if there are some? Would appreciate a video like that, thanks
Use the correct buffer and don't let it touch the ground. Heart usually removes most minor scratches. Some finishes especially chrome are in fixable
buy 3M 2080. it has a clear film over the actual vinyl while installing and then it is removed afterwards
this is exactly what i was hoping to see..... thank you sir.
Plz do more of these videos
the chinese one rips exatly like some monomeric vinyl we have in our signmakershop thats used for short term application on noticebords and stuff, but i wouldnt even dream of letting that stuff anywhere near a car. Even with a small plott.

I was very excited about the VIvid vinyl when it first came out, and I have wrapped several dragsters with their material. I wrapped a car in the liquid metal green and it turned black where the sun hit it the most in a matter of months, and the edges pulled back a half an inch from where it was trimmed. I cant get it off the car to save my life. The adhesive wont let go, and the material separated into layers leaving the metallic dust and glue. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get this off without setting it on fire, please let me know....
Use an eraser wheel. Works very well when 3m and Avery leave a ton of glue behind too
@@CKWraps Been doing wraps full time since 2005 and I have never had as much trouble taking a 10 year old 3M or Avery wrap off as I have had trying to remove a 9 month old vvivid wrap. How many vvivid wraps have you had to remove?
@@dr.graves5541 Sad that all this wrong information is being put out to so many people. Vivvid is absolute trash and wont last a year on a car before it fades, not to mention shrinkage on EVERYTHING.
I had the same issue where the vinyl was tearing into layers and little pieces. I ended up taking the wheel to the whole car. Probably spent more time removing then wrapping. Best part is the wrap was on for maybe 8 months before it faded and physically started cracking in random spots. Done many removals and never had such a hard time. Luckily it was on my personal vehicle and not a customer car.
@@SubieDew I wholeheartedly agree. The only thing that I think could be the reason, is that the wraps are just temporary and get removed almost immediately before they have a chance to fail.... Must be great to have money to throw away like that...

I really enjoyed your whole video all the way up to the heat-gun test , everything before that was college level and you was the professor & then the heat gun test was kindergarten level !! You had absolutely no guideline for the time after heating to the force/ rip test you should have reheated each one before applying force to them & to get it completely consistent with the amount of force you should have put one end in a vice clamp or vice grip and then put a little hole on one of the corners or the other side of the material and put either a ratchet strap hook in it and then just ratcheted it and that limits you know the amount of power pressure that gets put on it it'll be even on everyone I mean we know you're trying to use the same Force but that's not really regulated no matter how much you try because with stuff that thin 5 seconds with after using heat gun is everything and you went two to three minutes on the from the first to the last so there's absolutely no heat so the reaction would have been so much more different from the all the way to the 3M the one you did last so can we please get an update on that do each one hitting the same amount of heat for the same time & from the same distance please!! And I promise you I'm really not bashing you I just would really like to see all the underdog/n none you know Fanboy or number one brand get every equal opportunity a chance to shine because that's what it's all about you know especially if it holds up or it's better than the 3M wrap thank you & I'm truly really looking forward to seeing this part redone I really appreciate it because I am about to wrap for 2014 titanium turbo ford fusion and a 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX V8 4.6L supercharged so I'm really you know in the market looking for a cheap but reliable decent quality wrap so I'm not breaking the bank on two vehicles
