- Arys Oakheart while is amoung the main POV characters of the books only has a single chapter to his name. But it is key in setting up part of the Dornish Plot line from A Feast For Crows with his relationship with Princess Arianne Martell and her plot to crown Myrcella Baratheon as Queen. His death is very compelling with the impact his had for a character we only knew a little about. i also thing the showrunners of House Of The Dragon looked to Arys when fleshing out the character of Criston Cole.

It’s so messed up that Sansa is like “he doesn’t beat me as bad as the other kingsguard, and he does it with reluctance so he’s not as bad as the others” and she’s RIGHT. They are bid to do as the king commands, period. Ares Oakheart is upholding a sentiment that is expressly spelled out for a very young Jamie when he and (I think) Ser Arthur Dayne are standing guard outside Rhaella’s chambers while the Mad King is doing horrible things to her. Jamie asks, “Aren’t we sworn to protect her, too?” To which Dayne responds, “Yes, we are. Just not from him.” What a horrible system everyone upholds.
Yeah they are really both awful examples of what good men will let happen because honor compels them to listen to a terrible person.

Arys' story should have been scrapped in the draft stage of AFFC anyway. I found his character generic and his chapters to be a mildly enjoyable waste of time. There was nothing plot relevant in his POV that couldn't have been told by Arianne, and his inner conflict was just rehashing the same "honourable person swore a vow but is tempted to break it for understandable reasons" that has already been explored in multiple different POVs.
I don't think that he's soiled anything. Jaime Lannister broke all the oath a kingsguard took.
Honestly it seems like very few kingsguard knight are perfect saints

I don't think it's a poor adaption of Dorne. For me, it's just a different take that is not as good as the original.
