  • On November 5, 1989 Betty Broderick left her home in La Jolla, California early on a Sunday morning and drove to the home of her ex-husband, Dan, and his new wife, Linda. She snuck into their home and shot both of them to death while they lay sleeping in their bed.
    This video covers some of the high points leading up to Betty committing this horrible crime.

      Also part of the story is during wedding of Dan and Linda...Linda wanted Dan to wear a bullet proof vest under his tux. I can't remember if he did or not. Also Betty repeatedly would call Dan and Linda's answer machine and leave venom filled tirades fill of profanity. So Dan and Linda new her potential for violence as if trying to set it on fire.. Dan on any bad behavior of Betty would "fine" her bad behavior and deduct said fines from Betty's monthly alimony check. There were other health professionals involving with Betty namely the mental health professionals she interacted with when she was hauled away in a straight jacket. I have been following this case since the beginning and have read all the books. The best one is Bella Stumbo's book, "Until the 12th of Never". The book is very well written and researched. What I liked most about it was that it was very impartial and the final thought seemed to be, "They were both narcissists and both terrible people. They deserved each other."

      I agree Nightporter as Nela's book being the most informative. The author took an unbiased approach to show how all parties involved played a significant role in their own demise. While murder is not a solution, you could understand how it came to that point. Each of them could have at any time gotten themselves under control and they chose not to. In fact while I was reading "Until the 12th of Never" there were times where I had to step away and read something else because it would upset me how all 3 people consistently disregarded how their behavior would and did affect the children.

    What Betty did was terrible. But his gaslighting her, lying, cheating had taken a toll. Even one of the male jurors in her first trial said ”what took her so long?” I think what Linda Kolkena did was so cruel. Sending her wrinkle cream advertisements, and weight loss supplements, and taking Betty’s wedding China. So awful. Betty deserves to be in prison. She murdered 2 people. But I honestly don’t hold that against her. Dan and Linda brutally tortured her emotionally.

I think she didn't want to take the chance that his marriage might work out so at his urging inserted herself somewhere she didn't belong. This women was a horror of a person that the law could not protect Dan. She had no boundaries! Ignored restraining orders, she ignored and continued to damage his property ! • @Fcreceptor
      @Fcreceptor Před 2 lety +7

      I do think she had borderline traits. She was apparently rather unstable in the marriage. She threw things during arguments and had very poor impulse control. She became very narcissistic as well. What we don’t know is how she acted when she was younger. There is evidence, superficially, that she didn’t exhibit symptoms or signs of BPD. When he worked all day and never spent time at home, she doesn’t seem to have lost her cool or engage in risky behavior, such as cheating, substance misuse, or anything else. It isn’t until years later that she seemed to ramp up her vengeance and instability. So while she seems to meet some criteria for BPD, I’m not willing to agree with an assertion of such diagnoses. I think being emotionally unstable and highly reactive is something many people exhibit d/t various hormonal, genetic and other factors, outside an overt clinical diagnosis.
      I’m often unwilling to agree with these subclinical tags that people are labeled with, simply because it blurs the line between normal and abnormal. We all have faults and it’s not a result of mental illness. Don’t get me wrong, her actions are anything but normal or healthy, but she essentially seemed to just have major anger issues, as opposed to multiple dysfunctions. Perhaps she was drinking excessively after the marriage failed, and that certainly ruins your impulse control or behavior. Drug addicts and alcoholics typically display borderline traits.
      I think the most important aspect to this case is the actions Dan took as well. He was far from innocent. He cheated on his wife, denied it, and waiting for a rather prolonged period before formally removing himself from Betty. He used his influence to control her money by withholding court-ordered payments for her using cuss words or acting inappropriate by implementing a deduction system. This decision was shortly ruled in violation of court stipulation and he was required to make large payouts to Betty. He left her messages and writings that were extremely antagonist. He did all he could to punish Betty and prevent her from seeing the kids. He was highly narcissistic in his position and education as an MD/JD. I think they both created monsters out of each other by exacerbating their underlying faults. He knew she was a short-tempered woman, yet he rubbed his success in her face and was punitive to her for many years. Neither of them were good people at the end of the day, and her actions were the ultimate injustices. I would never excuse her being destructive or murdering him, yet I just think his behavior was a major contributor to the outcome. As I mentioned the parallel between substance abuse and borderline/unstable behavior - it would be akin to isolating a drug addict and toying with them by letting them withdrawal and not expect any retribution. Drug addicts are angry, hostile, manipulative, and often impossible to manage. I treat them, along with other mental disorders, as part of my profession. I wouldn’t expect anything but hell by forcing them to suffer. You don’t poke an angry caged bear. Should and could have walked away. She was awarded a boatload of money. She chose to retaliate and he underestimated her. However, he also shouldn’t have screwed with her mind.
