1978 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham, original condition

Greetings from Northeast Ohio, USA.
This vehicle is one of the last classic American land ships... 19 feet 4 inches long, about 8 mpg, heavier than lead, a remnant of the dying days of disco and the farewell to large cars coming out of Detroit. This video is a farewell to a car I owned for nearly eleven years. There was a brief rain shower just before I filmed, hence the beaded water on the car.
Salt is regularly used on roads in winter where I live. Best I can tell, and from my own experience, this Chrysler was never driven on salted roads, being rust free. 1970s Detroit cars were well known for rusting away. This boat is SOLID.
I was 20 years old and financially broke when this car hit the lot in 1978. I never dreamed I could own such a monster back then. In 2006, I happened across this beautiful piece of Detroit iron in Atwater, Ohio, a 1978 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham, and bought it used, myself being the third legal owner. It is a four-door sedan, metallic green and black vinyl top, 400 cubic inch engine, green leather interior, AC, PS, PB, PW, PL, 8 track AM-FM stereo. Chrysler was experimenting with their electronic ignition system at this time. The car is all original to the best of my knowledge. It had about 64000 miles on it when I bought it. After I got it, I kept it in sheltered storage for almost 11 years, driving it a couple times a year to keep everything free. This video speaks for itself, because I say nothing.
Maintenance wise, I replaced a few fuel hoses, a battery, and longed to put the time and money into this sweetheart of a car to bring it back to its complete original new condition. As the years passed and I grew older, I knew the car would be in better hands of someone who REALLY wanted it. I ended up selling it in late summer 2017 to a dealer in the southeast USA. When the carrier picked it up in October 2017, he told me he was taking the car to a port in New Jersey. That's when I knew the car had already resold to someone in Europe.

Was given a beautiful triple white '77 New Yorker Brougham in 1980, was special ordered by head of a small city police dept, it was loaded with EVERY factory accessory, but had to serve personal car/police car duty, so also had 440 Enforcer engine w/ heavy duty drive train and suspension, that cornered flat (instead of skirts, had open rear wheel wells w/opening stainless trim) ran 0-60 in 7.9 sec, top was just over 130 mph. He gave it to me because the trans went out, I had it replaced in 24 hours.Drove it 200,000+ miles sitting on that beautiful tufted leather. Gave it to the shop foreman of my auto restoration shop as a wedding gift. One interesting option on the price list was 'Imperial Decor Package.....$19.90' It had the Eagle hood ornament and all the trim pieces the '74-'75 Imperials had (Eagles on front/rear lights, rear markers, steering wheel etc.) I had several other 76-77-78 NYB's but that '77 was king of the hill. I have all models of 64-65-66 Imperials now, but miss that '77.
Made when you could actually say a car looked beautiful! My dad bought a black two door with red leather interior. Even had a padded vinyl top and moonroof. I miss the elegance, comfort and style. I wish we would have kept it like you have yours.
My dad had a 77 New Yorker Brougham. It was brown over white with that gorgeous tufted leather in brown too. Imagine a green leather interior today. Not happening. Beautiful car!
My father had a black one. Seeing this brings back memories. It got hit and when he turned in the lights, I had to go out out and hit them so the lights would flip down.

I owned a '77 New Yorker Brougham (ex-wife) DESTROYED IT (that WAS NOT EASY!) The 877 New Yorker Brougham had a STRONG "440" STANDARD, BEAUTIFUL, STRONG/BODY/FRAME. AND GREAT INTERIOR! I MISS HER (the New Yorker Brougham...NOT the bit&h!)

Chrysler was still building their cars all out of steel in 1978 when GM and Ford were starting to use more plastic on the body (Mainly fillers, grills, trim, etc but they were saving weight). Bodywork on these and the Imperials were gorgeous. Interiors were more luxurious I thought than even the Fleetwood Talisman. When Imperials still has this body, they were loaded yet were cheaper than the rest. They also were good driving machines (Electronic ignition, early form of anti-lock disc brakes all around on Imperials were some features they had before Cadillac and Lincoln used them) and the drive train was pretty close to bulletproof. Great example shown here.
Beautiful cars! The 1974-78 Newports and New Yorkers had a full front nose that was one piece of plastic (New Yorker (old Imperial 1975) in 1976 had the hidden head lights) and they were made by Budd Co. Plastics division and LOF Plastics (Woodall Industries) in Detroit. The grille was metal. The rear fender skirts are plastic also. I have a 1974 Newport with 230,000 miles and a 1974 New Yorker with 34,000 miles all original.

jblack, thank you for that great info. The biggest problem I saw with these late 70s land boats was the quality of the steel they used. So many Mopars, Fords, GM products, they all succumbed fairly quickly to the salt used on the roads here in Ohio winters. When I bought this relic, I could tell straight out that the owner parked it every fall, and took it out only during the no-snow months... there was NO corrosion on the body, frame, everywhere. Gawd, I wish I would have kept it now....

My dad worked at LOF Plastics (Woodall Industries) in Detroit for 42 years and I saw the Chrome molds/dies there with Newport and New Yorker front nose when I was a teen. They also, made the Corvette nose with the flipper headlights. I worked at Budd Co. - Stamping group and knew of products that the plastic division made. My dad also had (2) New Yorkers like yours a 1977 and a 1978. Beautiful driving cars. Take care.

I miss mine so much. I had one that I fully restored with a new 440 crate engine with dual 4 barrel carbs, professionally rebuilt trans, mag wheels and a candy paint job between 2003-2006 until my I told my ex wife that she could use it until she got a new car after hitting a deer with her mustang , but that turned into her having it for 2 years and not once did she change oil etc and she threw a rod right through the side of that beautiful engine. Needless to say, I paid a shop a TON of money to restore that damn car. It was a VERY sad day when I saw it.

Big cars are great! I miss my 73 Ford thunderbird. Ridiculously long doorS, overall footprint just a hair over the size of a modern suburban, thick plush rug where you can easily lose your car keys or cell phone, and that great fine point if you like fast cars stay away from these things we love driving and a living room, and this is the best way to go! Sadly these things never came with cup holders, go figure LOL
Great car! I confess that I'd be too afraid of one with those "lean-burn" engines. BUT, this is the last year for a four-door hardtop by any manufacturer.... and it has the optional-and-desirable VENT windows, besides! There is nothing that I would rather own and drive. Why the exhausts for these are a bit louder than a Lincoln of similar vintage, I cannot figure...... but such a desirable automobile!!
There are a lot of internet how-to articles on repairing and/or eliminating lean burn systems.

That car looks to be fully loaded it's got PW, PDL, telescopic & tilt steering, cruise control, PS, PB, Pwr Seats, AM/FM Tape Radio it even had the Chrysler road rallies and love the interior it's got the high end seats with the soft leather man that's a nice car the only thing is the lean burn system but it's easy to deal with if you know what your doing with it. that's a nice car I would love to own a car like that with all the options it has

My mom had a 78 2 door silver with red interior. I loved that car. But they made the mistake of letting me have free use of it . The passenger side got wiped out.

I'll be honest. I kind of shead a few tears watching this. I was supposed to get a 1979 Lincoln Continental MK IV but I've just become a young adult and my mother didn't like the car. She claimed I'd get stuck in snow, would break down lots, and If I crashed I'd be dead. I told her that's the beauty of it, after awhile and discussing it with someone who had one, she agreed I get one but I couldn't move or drive it to my location without a full licence. Trying to work through these issues, she got a new car and wanted to get rid of her car.. Its a pretty 2010 Mazda 6 V6 and she gave ot to me. I feel amazing about owning such a car but I still have that itch for classics. They're just my thing. Seeing that you got rid of this car kinda makes me sad. It looks very well taken care of and I only hope whoever got it next takes good care of it too.

Funny the cars you mention here. Some of those late 70s Lincolns and the late 70s Chryslers were at first sight pretty similar on the front end. Only for a moment, to be sure.
I too owned a 2007 Mazda 6 V6, bought it new, drove it for almost ten years. When I sold it to a young man's (17 yrs old) parents (for the young man, his first ever car) I left a congratulations card in the car with $20 in it... "Towards your first fill up, enjoy the ride!" He took a pic of the card with the car and sent it to me... I hope it's still running for him, or whoever has it now!
I found this video by accident and immediately recognised the actor who's playing the lead role. This one has a new home here in Finland and is well taken care of. So no worries. Its been in our possession ever since it came here in December 2017 as I recall.

I really miss that car. Now that I am retired I really wish I had kept it.

Sorry, I totally forgot to reply to your message. And now I spotted this video again after a couple of beers. :) It has served us quite well so thank you for your prayers. I've done some work with the brakes, exhaust system and something minor without any big issues. I haven't had time to fix the driver´s window though so it still won't go down. Someone had linked this car in the c-body forum and I found it there. I assigned a familiar guy from Florida to make the deal with you. I hope you don't feel too bad because it left US? Like I said before it´s in a good home now. And yes, all the great stuff you packed in the trunk came intact with the car. One thing I´d like to ask you. There are a few strange dings in the upper left rear fender. I can see them also in the video if I like look closely enough. I first thought they came during the shipping. Do you know their origin?

Indeed. 1978 was the last year for this great land ship at Chrysler. The New Yorkers going forward were shadows of their former glory.
1978 was the last of the good looking New Yorkers in 1979 the style changed and went ugly 79 was also the first year of the Fifth Avenue's too

Seven MPG on a GOOD day of driving downhill! That 400 ci engine required supreme grade (93 octane) which was what, a dime difference back in the 1970s? Today it's about 60 cents more per gallon.
