- The Chrysler New Yorker is an automobile model which was produced by Chrysler from 1940 to 1996, serving for several years as the brand's flagship model. A trim level named the "New York Special" first appeared in 1938 and the "New Yorker" name debuted in 1939. The New Yorker name helped define the Chrysler brand as a maker of upscale models, priced and equipped above mainstream brands like Ford, Chevrolet/Pontiac, and Dodge/Plymouth, but below full luxury brands like Cadillac, Lincoln and Packard. During the New Yorker's tenure, it competed against upper level models from Buick, Oldsmobile and Mercury. Until its discontinuation in 1996, the New Yorker had made its mark as the longest-running American car nameplate.
For 1975, the New Yorker received a slightly revised grille and New Yorker Brougham became the sole trim designation. The St. Regis package, introduced in mid-1974, returned for its first full year.
In 1976, the New Yorker inherited the front and rear end styling of the discontinued Imperial, and its interiors as well, especially, covered headlights. The Imperial styling gave the New Yorker an unforeseen boost in sales, as the car looked distinctly different from the lower priced Newport. The styling cues formerly used on the 1974 and 1975 New Yorkers in turn were passed on to the base Chrysler Newport.
In 1977, the standard 440-cid V8 engine was now computer-controlled with a new "lean burn" system allowing for more responsive acceleration and performance.
The 1978 New Yorker Brougham was available in 2-door and 4-door hardtop body styles. Both were the last U.S.-built true pillarless hardtop models along with featuring frameless door glass and fully opening windows. An optional "St. Regis" package included a partial "formal" padded vinyl roof that included a fixed B-pillar and opera window. This was also the final year a 2-door New Yorker was offered. Appearance changes were limited to a new segmented grill design, dual accent tape strips on the lower body sides, new rear deck stripes, and bright accents on the taillamps. The 400 cu in (6.6 L) V8 engine (360 cu in (5.9 L) in California and high altitude regions) was now the standard engine with the 440 cu in (7.2 L) becoming optional. The last year of the C-body New Yorker Broughams saw engineering changes that included a revised windshield wiper linkage bushing, redesigned front and rear plastic fender extensions for the bumpers, and thinner glass.

I love how old american cars had colorful interiors
Years ago cars had so many exterior and interior colors. That is because most cars were made to order, and you had to wait 6-8 weeks to get your new car. Today mist cars are bought off the dealership’s lot, so they limit color choices.
This was my favorite car as a kid. Ours was a lighter “Fern” green with a darker green vinyl top. It had a tufted velour interior. We bought it new in Spring 77 when I was 12, my sister 8. We went on a 3 week driving trip that summer. I thought I’d gone to heaven!
My dad had a ‘78 with the three tone velour. Such a quiet and comfy car.
Didn't you think back then at 12 (and so did the neighbors) that you were riding in something special? A family down the road bought a '78 two door New Yorker brougham that was as loaded as loaded could be. Triple gray, chrome rings around the wheels, padded landau roof, gigantic moonroof. The car was stunning. Better looking than the just shrunk Cadillacs of '77. Thanks for sharing that memory.
@@douglasb.1203 I thought it was like having (in my impressionable mind) a Rolls Royce, it was the most amazing car!!
Beautiful New Yorker!!!
1977 was the year I got my license to drive. Today these cars draw attention as massive dinosaurs, back then they were just regular cars. Many of my friend's parents had big cars with big block V8s, whichmeant smoky burnouts to us 16 years old kids.
MY GOD!! That interior🤗🤗
Is better than my home than my home living room
She's a beauty!
I had an extremely low mileage '78 Brougham sedan for a time... Dove Grey with matching leather and a Silver vinyl top.
I miss that car!
I aced the Lean Burn setup and replaced it with a Demon Thermoquad... Gutted the Catalytic Converter and put an aftermarket "HEI" distributor in it... Ran like a Champ and got about 15mpg in town and almost 30 on the Highway!
I had a '75 Imperial, twin to this car...dark blue with blue velour pillowed interior, and a factory sunroof. the biggest difference was 4 wheel disc brakes, which the NY did not have. awesome handling car. these were great looking road cars, and the last full size Chrysler...such a delight to drive down the road. must make quite a statement in Norway!
It was available as an extra cost option on the New Yorker, just not standard equipment like the prior Imperials
Nostalgia: Chrysler that I would buy. Old school.
Had a VERY USED '77 New Yorker that was the spittin' image of this vehicle! IT WAS AWESOME!!!
I remember that i saw this car and it was BEAUTIFUL. Congrats for the 56 Imperial bro!
Supercar Specials74 thanks man😇❤️
Stll enjoying this video. A gorgeous car.
your videos are great. I always go to classic car shows here in NJ
The companies had many more colors on their pallets than they do as we speak. It seems all you see today are subtle shades of grey!
Beautiful New Yorker that looks like an Imperial 😊
Good. Just discovered this channel and I'm impressed that you went for maximum image quality. Too many channels are mundane when it comes to resolution. But you my friend look magnificent with your 2160p60 in truly shimmering 4k.
Thank you so much, and thanks for watching:)
Mr Fearon, exactly, well said
Beautiful video and a stunning New Yorker. Those seats look extremely comfortable.
you had me until 4:03 - darn birds! Kidding - gorgeous vehicle. One of the largest cars I ever rode in as a kid. The seats put any luxury sofa to shame. What would it cost to produce or buy something like this today? thanks for sharing this memory!
Hi, yeah they are annoying! Thanks for watching!
Love green 🟩 interiors 🤩 the music is great 🎶
official Trailer Park Supervisor vehicle
I bought a 1977 New Yorker Brougham in the early 80s. I absolutely loved everything about the car. It had alot of options. Tilt + telescopic steering wheel,a great AC,power windows, power seats, power door locks power trunk release, hideaway headlights, and a foot operated radio switch. ( GM calls it wonderbar.) The iterior was awesome. Burgundy colored plush velour. The exterior color was Silver with a Burgundy colored Landau roof. It ran great for about 3 years then all of a sudden it started to load up and backfire. No one could figure out why. Any answers??
A lovely car.
Awesome video!!! ... i remember my folks having a car like this as our nice family car/vacation car during the 1980s. i believed my father and mother purchased it when it was a few years old (like 2 or 3) i don't remember much except that it was nice, big and roomy... and very cold in the summer and warm in the winter months. :)... ours was a maroon/dark red color 4 door model. :)
what a great vid showing all the details
briefman49 thanks man🥰
@@youngexotics2155 you are video master👨⚖ great job 😉🍾😎
Lots of rear seat room for the goons and the mark.
Lots of trunk space to put the dead mark, shovels or anchor chain, and gloves.
Fuhgeddiboutit.
Why can’t design like this quality again??
^drive dosen't work, but third does. neutral is park, reverse is second. if you wanna use reverse, put it in drive^
Grandpa had one of these beauts....damn fine automobile
Wow just look at those door and kick panels!! Looks literally factory fresh. How many miles are on the clock?? Talk about a pure time capsule
Nice Car!! What is the music ?
Darude sandstorm
AWESOME CAR!
A very green car, but not what we think of as a "green car" today. :-)
I see the infamous Chrysler ballast resistor on the firewall.
Curious to know where this was filmed. I have never seen a license plate like that in my travels.
Possibly Belgium?
Same dash as my '74 Fury
That thing is mint!
a guy named Ricky who lives in the Sunnyvale trailer park drives this
I own the exact car with a green vinyl top. They ride as good as it looks
Same year and model as Mr. Lahey’s in the same colour as Ricky’s 1975.
Chrysler was on the skids at this point. The dashboard is almost identical to that of my first company car - a 1977 Plymouth Fury.
You could fit a K-Car in the trunk of the New Yorker.
Is that a restoration or a beautifully preserved survivor?
Thanks
It's actually a completely different dash board. They used a modular approach. The Dodge and Plymouth were identical, but Chrysler and Imperial are completely different. It uses the same radios and clocks and some component sharing, but the placement and style and padding is very different and won't interchange with a Plymouth or Dodge
That’s a big boat
Always wanted a car with a deep green interior. Sigh....
It’s sad to se it go😔. I saw your Imperial on Instagram though...Have you swapped it? Anyways GREAT VIDEO!
.................. AND it has the optional-but-very desirable front VENT windows!!!
SUPERBE !
Gorgeous car!!!
Nam❤
Did it still have the leanburn?
I got the same car but mine 76 and blue out side and in
Las parrillas dan la visión alas torres gemelas por eso el.nombre me imagino
Who made who Lincoln or Chrysler
7 miles to the gallon yikez
Lol yea. I had a 1969 Chrysler Newport that got about 9mpg city and 12mpg highway.
What song?
Lovely green organic looking car! Who owns it? Greta Thunberg?
Haha, we were the owners before, but now its sold
I would wish that She owned it
