I don't get what the problem is. He has the clause and the choice. He doesn't even need a good reason why he doesn't want to go to a team that is on his list. You can be mad at the team because they signed the deal. But not at the player.

Players should always do what's best for themselves, even if it could be considered "selfish", because teams are always going to do what's best for themselves too. @@Ratzy1614 Exactly. Anyone calling Stamkos 'selfish' should call BriseBois a liar for saying he wanted Stamkos to stay (when in reality he had low-balled him with a $3 million a year contract offer and wouldn't budge on that number). And the report was that Stamkos only wanted $4 - 5 million a year...
Stamkos isn't any more selfish than any other athlete making millions a year to play a sport- he's just also not a spineless 'company man' who would take less than 50% of his market value to stay with a team that clearly didn't value him (his leadership, his 80+ points, his 40+ goals, any of it).

His wife has 1 year left of residency and he's going to Detroit for 2 years. Let's be real and I say this as a Rangers fan who has watched his entire tenure here: He fleeced this team with his $56 million dollar contract. He got generational wealth from Jeff Gorton and you're telling me he can't stay away from his wife for 1 year?
This isn't even factoring in his horrific play on ice. He got a NTC, captaincy, and is playing for an organization that is notorious for giving out bad contracts and playing them out until it's way too late. Despite all that, he's still being outted by Drury. Does that not demonstrate how bad he is as a player? He's being paid 8 million dollars to be the worst d-man on the team and I'd say our 7th d-guy is even better than him.
There are plenty of worse situations he could be in. Good for him for thinking about his wife, but his entire stay here has only set back the team. His contract is part of the reason why this team never resigned Buch, and 3-4 years later, this team is STILL looking for a RW to replace him. If a worker doesn't do his work and constantly pushes back the team because of his incompetency, the company has the right to fire said worker regardless of their personal situation. Don't even get me started with how most of our postseason runs ended because of him.

They couldn’t trade him until noon on July 1st after he submitted his 15 team list. Not wanting to go he placed those two teams on his list therefore cancelling any deals in place. I understand him wanting to stay to be with his wife, but as a pro athlete when your NMC expires you have no choice but to go where they send you. There is more to this story than what we have read on the surface. I’m sure he’ll be either traded to a team close by ( Isles, Devils) so he can stay at home, or depending on how things go work it out to play one last year with the Rangers then move on. I have zero issue with him enforcing his no trade clause. Although it is a little ridiculous trying to stop any trade if he has a limited no trade clause.
In all honesty depending on what teams are on his list, he would be better off accepting a trade to a team like Detroit where number 1 they wanted him & number 2 is geographically not that far from NY.
As someone who works in a hospital and is familiar with what exactly is involved in a residency program you really don't have much time for a personal life. So I can understand him wanting to maximize the time he does have with his wife. Although there is a giant flaw in that logic when it comes to blocking a trade. First if they trade him to a west coast team it becomes way harder to spend time with each other on either person's off day. Second this is the offseason for the NHL, and depending on what type of Residency she is involved in it should come to end around the end of the next regular season to start of the Finals. So really your only talking about 6-7 months not a full year of managing how you spend time together. Third once the regular season starts his time is dictated by the NHL schedule. I am sure her residency program is not going to bend over backwards to accommodate & coordinate with his playing schedule so control over that isn't going to change regardless of the team he is on. Fourth this relates directly to Detroit their ownership is dedicated to taking care of their players, so I would hope he would have at least been receptive to hearing what they have to say. He might be surprised to find how the ownership has deep ties & relationships with the medical community. Plus Michigan has more top 500 hospitals than NY .

  • @Bergkampgunner
    @Bergkampgunner Před 2 dny +6

Trouba signed this contract before Covid and before his wife got pregnant. Both of those things could have caused the delay in her residency finishing and who could have known about the impending global pandemic then.
Part of why we got him in the first place was because he wanted to move to the states in part so his wife could do this. Where better than NYC could she have done it? It has some of the best medical centers in the world. We probably got a better deal from Winnipeg than we should have because of NYC being a draw and he used his leverage to get here. I don’t blame him for trying to use his leverage now to stay. The only way I’d blame him is if he refuses to go to the other 16 teams. The same way you couldn’t have predicted Covid is the same reason you have to go if a trade happens. Life is full of unexpected things. 6-9 months of long distance where half your games were already going to be on the road anyway is not the end of the world in an 80ish year life span.
The only other way I can see this being palatable for both parties with him staying is for him to “not recover well” from the broken ankle he was supposedly playing on at the end of the year and go on LTIR. Rangers get the cap space they are desperate for and he doesn’t have to leave for a year.

I agree that, if I were in their shoes, as her I would finish my schooling and as him I would honor my contract. If that means less than a year of a long distance relationship so be it. I don’t think “just go to another hospital” is the right argument tho

That's on his wife for allowing him to be public enemy number 1. If that's how you think about it then fans are justified hating on him and his wife, it's not selfish as a fan to think that way.

Here’s my general read. Goodrow got kicked to the curb. And Trouba being the captain the rangers didn’t want to do that so I bet they approached him with the idea of finding the best fit out of the 15 teams they could trade him to and work something out
It then leaks that he doesn’t want to be traded at all and possibly wouldn’t report ect so his sketchy value that he had on the market plummeted even more
They should have worked out some trades in advance and THEN asked for his 15 teams and accept anything instead of trying to play nice.
    My 2 cents

Nobody put a gun to the Rangers.
    Truobs had a contract.
He has given his all since arriving in NY. If healthy, I'm happy to keep him in NY

Wings fan here, I like a lot of the comments have zero issue with him not going to the Wings or any of the 14 other teams on his NTC, however if he's telling the other 16 teams that he won't report than thats different. Cant the Rangers wait just one more year until Trouba's wife is done with school?

If you don't want a player to have all the power in any potential trades you make, then don't give them NTC/NMC...

The only time I get mad at players about no trade clauses is when they demand a trade. I think if the player demands a trade, it should void all clauses.
