Why aren't video games fun anymore?

  • A deeper dive into the question that has been popping up in everyone's mind for the last few years. Are video games just getting worse? Is it my depression? Why is it I just don't have fun like I used to?
There are a few different reasons I cover in the video and this is not the end-all be-all list of reasons. This implies my thoughts on what is causing the issue.

Games aren't fun anymore because I have crippling depression ❤

This is the answer. People with depression typically lose all joy in what they usually do to have fun. Which doesn't speak to actual game quality at all.

I was shaking when I beat balteus in Armored Core yesterday, I love playing games as much as before, it's just that it's hard to start, to gt into for some reason, I guess most things are like that for me nowadays

This issue has hit it's pinnacle for me with ff7. I got rebirth and it is a chore playing that game. i can't force myself to beat it. But i popped in og ff7 and the game just dug it's claws into me and I'm almost halfway through it.

Try playing certain games with mods. For example, Fallout 4 and Skyrim are not necessarily the best games when it comes to vanilla assets. But with mods, they could open a whole new universe of possibilities.
With Fallout 4, I've downloaded mods to replace many weapons and armor with more retro-modern weapons and armor. Essentially I now play Fallout 4 with mods inspired by real-world military gear that range between late 20th century to the 2000s. Guns like the Glock 19 and MK18 are my favorite weapon mods ever.
With Skyrim, I've downloaded mods that mostly replace the man-made armors with realistic armors and weapons that can be seen during the 10th to 11th centuries since Skyrim takes inspiration from said timeline. For example, iron and leather scale armors with paddings were a real thing. And I actually like this since it adds to immersion in a fantasy setting.
There is an ultimate point to this though. And the reason why I've been modding these games so much without totally changing the games aesthetics is because I'm using these two games for these two books I'm writing. One book is a post-apocalypse science fiction that takes inspirations from The Punisher and Fallout while the other book is a sword and sorcery fantasy that takes inspirations from Conan The Barbarian and Skyrim. While I'm in no hurry to make this happen, I do wish to release both books simultaneously. And then follow it up with a crossover where the main characters from both stories form a team combining the powers of modern weapons, tactical armor, and 21st century electronics with medieval weaponry and armors and magic spells. Basically an Army Ranger guy, an FBI agent chick, and a computer hacker kid team up with a Nordic Viking barbarian and an Elf sorceress to take down an evil necromancer. There will be moments of combat combining modern tech and medieval magic. But there will also be moments of banter like the barbarian mistaking pistols and rifles for crossbows and magic staves and the elf in awe and wonder of how computers and cars function. And maybe, just maybe, she may also learn modern science to augment her magic spells.
Keep in mind I'm not saying you should play Fallout 4 and Skyrim with mods specifically. There are other games out there that can be enjoyable as I do have other games I can fall back on for a little bit. Valheim is a good example as I play this game often with friends. It's just that whenever I'm not writing my books or at the gym, these are the two sandbox mod-supported games I enjoy the most. And of course there is church but that's another subject entirely. But yes. Games do not have to be stale and boring. Just find new ways to make them fun again and as a balance, find something to do outside of video games.
Edit: As a hobby relating to my book writing, yes I am reading a book. Though it's not necessarily because I'm genuinely interested in the story. Rather it's more so the writing style of the author that intrigues me which he likes to write in short chapters with short paragraphs. I emulate this writing style with one scene per chapter whether it's a change of character POV, a change of scenery, or a change of time.

to comment on your second points, I think that now players are playing games in a rush also. like they just want to get to the end or figure out the fastest way to make the most amount of money in the game and get all the best equipment but in doing that you’re missing actually playing the game and appreciating the journey that it takes to get to that point. which is the point of the game really. Thoughts?

I almost included this exact point when talking about wow. Because man have they driven that point home. They just released a limited time 90 day game mode. And people were crying after 8 hours that they hadn't unlocked everything. It's meant to be played for months. Not rushed and beaten in 1 day

It hurts too that most games are not even finished and then to get the 'complete' game you have to pay more for DLC. It's why most cozy type games are being played more too. If I pay $50-$60 on a game it should include EVERYTHING and work on release. It's the reason why people clap when developers say "delayed to", because we know it takes sometimes years to complete something.
They give hype, they show spoilers of what you can do and then when you play, everything fails. We feel like we been lied too for so long and we have been conditioned to see the signs before the game comes out. Only truly die hard fans will pay-to-play the flops and devs end up not learning a lesson since it still 'makes money' never mind the reviews.

Live Service. That's why. Gone are the days of having hot new releases that everyone was playing and in are the days of the 10 year old game patched to oblivion leaving the original product unrecognizable. Just look at 10 years ago, the gaming landscape was so different... Even the new releases now are just the same game with a ''2'' added to it (CS2 and OW2). Rainbow six, league of legends, rocket league, TF2, Sea of Thieves etc. are all just the same game with tons of ''new'' content. And of the few actual new releases, there just isn't enough ''fun factor'' to keep coming back to them (Lethal Company and Content Warning come to mind). Even AAA singleplayer games are all reskins of the same old stuff we've gotten for the past 10 years with very few exceptions (Elden Ring is probably the only one I could name off the top of my head). I was watching a friend of mine play the PC release of Ghosts of Tsushima and it just looks like the same sh*t we've been served time and time again with a slick new storyline. There just isn't money in making original games anymore, zoomers have no problem being served the same thing over and over and they NEVER boycott anything unless it's politically motivated. I've been gaming on PC for over 15 years and post-covid has been the worst segment of it all. Then again, most media after 2020 has lost me to the point where youtube is the last online platform i'm willing to use outside of video games. You can really feel the shift from then on, with alot of younger kids spending every waking hour on their PC/phones consuming media and playing games like it's a day job up until their mid-20s. To put an end to my rant, indie games are the future.

people giving him advice are missing the point that his is a video essay that analyzes an existing mutual feeling that many have about modern video games. it may not apply to you, but it cannot be denied that there is a majority of gamers who have dissatisfaction with modern games reward systems and capitalistic endeavors. there will always be fun indie games and mods. this is not a “true or false” debate but instead an open discussion about the spectrum of games.
