    Such a great movie. The set design and costumes look great, the combat is brutal and bloody without being over the top and cheesy and the soundtrack is amazing. The music really makes this movie when the characters are running through the wilderness with the beautiful music playing it is so good. Sure Arnold isn't at his peak yet acting wise but who cares? You can tell he cared about what he was doing and knew how to look convincing handling a sword. I love all of the conversations the characters have about their gods and what it means to be a mighty warrior. Such an underrated movie. They seriously knew how to make movies back in the 80s. This, Aliens, Die Hard, Robocop, there's all sorts of badass movies that came out of the 80s.
      I love this movie for all the reasons you named but also because to me, it feels almost real. I don't know if that makes sense or not but there's a feeling of authenticity that I don't get from movies made today. I see a CGI Wakanda, and it's beautiful and it looks great but in the back of my head I know it's all just CGI.
      I watch a fight scene where characters flip, do acrobatics like gymnasts, or worse, the fight scene is so shaky I can't even tell what the hell's going on.
      Then you see a movie like this, and you see these amazing landscapes and this ancient looking city and and it looks and feels real. It's not CGI, you would actually think this city truly existed somewhere, at some point in time.
      And when these characters fight, it feels real. It's not acrobatic shenanigans; it's raw, brutal, and ugly.
      I wish modern Hollywood would step back, dust off some of these old classics, and learn from them. There's a reason why they're classics.

      That's what is great about polytheism. Gods had their domains. If you found yourself in another god's domain you would give homage since it's their turf, while still maintaining fealty your own god. The god were also flawed, had character, and emotion.
      Monotheism fucked it all up with one ALL powerful god. They're the "infinity plus one" kid of religions. ALL knowing, ALL powerful, which of course causes logical problems when you start to think about it. And no one else allowed. It's mine or nothing. Both boring and an instant source of conflict.

    • @robertwilkins3167
      @robertwilkins3167 Před rokem +2

      Which is how he is portrayed in Robert E. Howard's Conan stories. Although he's a barbarian with a barbarian's view of the world (civilization is bad, watch my back and I'll watch yours, always keep your word, etc.) Conan is clearly an intelligent man. The theological bantering with Subotai in these scene reminds me of Conan's view of the gods in the stories: while he clearly believes that Crom is the god of his people, the Cimmierians, he clearly also believes that all of the other gods exist. In the story the Phoenix on the Sword after he's become King of Aquilonia Conan has a dream sent by a prophet of Mitra, chief god of the Hyborians. Mitra is a stern yet benevolent god whose main enemy is the snake-god Set.
      Conan accepts the dream as having been sent by Mitra's prophet on it's face and he apparently accept's the prophet's pronouncement that even though he's a Cimmerian is an instrument of the god's will as King of Aquilonia. Conan is an older man at this point so his views on religion have matured. In a story set when he was younger, Queen of the Black Coast, he becomes the lover of the pirate queen Belit. At one point Conan and Belit have a discussion about the gods and he says more or less that while the gods exist praying to them is pointless. The goal of life should be to eat, drink and be merry.
