Also thanks to Wevideo for editing, and my daughter for doing the editing work.
amazing video loved the small humor in it great job man hope she is alive and well.... that sound at 4,400 is such a beautiful sound the women won't understand... my wife is the same way lol
Thank you for your comments
Sounds like a lot of work !
Holley sold a TBI kit like this back in the late 80's. I had converted my 84 carbureted Camaro. After a year the ECU failed just short of warranty so I went back to the rochester carb. It was a costly kit back then and a costly repair.
Since this is unlikely a potted ecu, I would highly recommend you mount the ecu on rubber vibration dampers and mount it as high as possible as it likely will be exposed to moisture
Yes, I have it mounted high on a plywood section. It doesn't see much vibration, and it's location stays dry.
1.4k views and only a few subscribers.....typical CZcams stuff. I subscribed to your channel. Great video.
Thank you
Nice job!
we have a mercruiser 5.7 that upgraded to a rochestor tbi product... Im having trouble finding out what wire matches with the green/white wire comming from the module on the manifold riser? wiring MESSS! Any help?
Great work! you can see the biggest advantage of efi over carbs is better cold starting and smoother running....too bad that you didn't have the best carb used on marine engines (Rochester Quadrajet) which has not been made since 1990, these when properly set up run almost as well as fuel injection, cold starts are not as good as efi but overall running and power is excellent. I have one on a 1988 4.3 same engine as yours but the older pre Vortec with no balance shaft. They are complex to rebuild for a beginner but once you do it, the next time it's easy. I think they are superior to both the Weber and Holley marine 4bbls. For carbs the cost factor is a big plus as rebuild kits are only about $50 and the older engines could use the simple and cheap to replace mechanical fuel pumps. Even the electric pumps for the lower pressure of a carb system are not expensive.
Also, you might not be aware of this but I felt the need to point it out, those one piece exhaust manifolds are known as engine killers, they were cast poorly and have inconsistent wall thickness. When they fail (crack) they will put water right into a cylinder and rust the cyl walls and valves. Get rid of them before its too late. Barr Marine makes a nice conversion kit. Merc only made them for 3 years because of the casting problems. I had the OMC version of the same design on my 4.3 and never had a problem but I guess I just got lucky, I did convert it over to the later OMC/Volvo 2 piece exhaust style.
Thanks for the tip!
@@brianwindingland9595 I have a 1987 OMC 4.3 L and if you know what you are doing you can get a carbureted engine to run just as good as A fuel injected engine! When I’m say discontinued there one piece manifolds I replaced mine with a set of headers from HI-TEK Marine! They are made of stainless steel and are a direct replacement, You will save a ton of weight and you will gain a bunch of HP and torque! And the best part is you will never have to replace them again! What people do not know about carbureted engines is they do not run well with today’s modern fuel with ethanol! Which means you need to put an adjustable fuel pressure regulator on your fuel line and set the fuel pressure to 3 pounds! I installed Hi-Tek headers in 1999 or 2000, They still look just as good as the day I put them on! I live on the East Coast and I dock my boat in salt water all summer every summer! Each header even has a provision for a pencil style sacrificial anode! They are worth every penny, Here is the link! www.hitekmarine.com.au/
They made it long before that
I’m surprised to read that you lost some hp. I have a 5 litre carb and from what I have seen is the 5 litre fuel injection has like 40 or more horsepower.. I was considering doing the switch only for more horsepower.
Very nice. One suggestion: you may want to install a fitting to transition between the metal fuel line and the fuel hose rather than ring clamping directly to the metal line. This way it would be USCG compliant and less prone to leaks.
Good idea. Any suggestion for the fittings?
Thanks for sharing
Where is this kit from?
Hi, can you tell me where I can buy EFI for mercruiser 4.3?
How has the conversion been holding up so far? Have you had any reliability issues? I'm thinking about getting one of these kits for my Ski Centurion with a Ford 351W.
I've run the boat a lot this summer. Very good reliability which was my main focus. Starts great every time and runs good. I did lose some HP, but not that noticeable since there was plenty of HP for the size of boat.
Update on this reply - I found my horsepower back by making a few minor adjustments. The throttle was not fully opening due to an adjustment. After I got full throttle again, it's about the same or a little more HP.
I did the same conversion from affordable fuel injection. Works great. Curious, how did you end up wiring your shift interrupt switch? I had mine wired up to the negative side of my coil to interrupt the pulsing. My ignition module (inside the distributor) recently failed after about a year of use and I’m not sure if that was because I grounded the unit (at the negative post on the coil) via the shift interrupt switch or if it’s just a fluke… curious how you wired yours up. Thanks in advance
I'm going to show my lack of knowledge on this here. I don't have any idea about the shift interrupt switch. I don't think I even had one. I followed the directions from affordable fuel injection and it worked the first time. I've run it now for two years and it works great. No regrets.
@@brianwindingland9595 interesting. My instructions didn’t have anything about it. You should have one where the two shifter linkages meet up on the starboard side exhaust riser, there’s a spring loaded mechanism that triggers the switch as you shift into neutral. I’ll maybe give them a call. Thanks!
I just added the kit too and my concern was the shift interruption switch. I figure over time it would create a shock to the drive.
I was about to wire mine to break the negative side of the coil too.
What rpm in water are yall operating at in neutral?
Hello I am doing something similar. Where did you hook the crank singal wire to on the coil?
If I remember right, I connected to the negative side of the coil. It's kind of shown at 4:28. It's a white wire with a blue end on it.
Can we have a video of this out on the lake now? Are you pleased with the Lake performance?? Any concerns crop up since installing it? Any regrets?
Just added a running on the lake video. It runs great! No regrets at all. Much easier to start, easier to run, and it's smoother.
Wonder if they make one of these for the 4BBL version of this motor
where can I find this kit?
Great job do you have to put a fogging oil on it when you winterize it like the carb?
Fogging oil is more for your engine: cylinder walls, rings, pisons and those type of things. It's a good idea to still fog it for long term storage. I no longer have to drain the carb bowls, but I do use a fuel stabilizer and run it in the last tank of the year so it's in the fuel filter and all fuel lines.
@@brianwindingland9595 Thank you sir
Hi I have a 30 maxum boat with twin 4.3 motors i would like to change like you did were can i buy the kits like yours?
Affordable fuel injection
Hi where did u bought this system and how mutch it cost
Affordable Fuel Injection. They have pricing for each of their systems on their site.
Can you tell me where you put the O2 sensor?
No O2 Sensor in this build. With a different exhaust setup, you can install it in the exhaust riser.
How is the coil connected? Do you have a white and a pink wire connected to it? If so which one is on the + and which one is on the negative?
According to the install instructions from Affordable Fuel Injection:
"The PINK wire needs to be attached to an Ignition 1 (battery power only with key on or in the crank position) power source. Ensure that this is an ignition 1 source. An ignition 1 source is 12volts available any time that the key is not in the off position.
Also this PINK wire must have 12V while the vehicle is in the cranking mode (starting). This means the wire will have power when the key is on, or start, or back to on. Usually this wire can be taken from the power side of the coil (+) or the power from the old distributor or the fuse box. The system will not work if power is not provided to the (PINK) ignition wire while cranking."
and
"A wire labeled “CRANK SIGNAL” is to be installed on the crank terminal of the starter solenoid or off the ignition switch. A signal is provided to the ECM from this wire only when the engine is cranking. The ECM, to determine when the engine is cranking, uses this signal to allow the fuel pulse width to be expanded for cold start up fuel enrichment"
So, my pink wire is on the positive side of the coil and that "crank signal" is on the negative side of the coil. I'm a shade tree mechanic, it worked for me. Technical questions, please reach out to an expert.
What size plate did you order
Gday Brian. Did that kit come with an oxygen sensor?
It is an option, and I chose not to get an O2 sensor.
Where did you purchase this kit from? Or did you just source each component
Affordable fuel injection for all of it.
Você tem peças usadas do motor mercruiser v6 ?
I'm not sure if this translated correctly, but no, I don't have any used parts. The parts I have left over after this build I'm going to keep. Thank you.
Where you purchase, kit EFI conversion
My mercrusier mariner 4.3 its a boat tahoe 2008
excelent, thanks
Did you ever find a kit for your Tahoe I have the same year
What is the name of the conversion kit and where to buy it?
Affordable fuel injection
Wait, what's the power steering pump for?
I'll avoid the obvious answer haha, but it's for the stern drive. When you're going full speed across the water, especially when the boat is planing, it's incredibly hard (to near impossible) to turn the stern without the power steering assist.
@@johndegrey5944 I never knew that. My great uncle's pontoon did like 10 MPH with the current.
I want to do this to mine.
Is worth it!
Where did you purchase the kit from
Affordable Fuel Injection
I have the same motor..what fuel injection kit is that?
I purchased the kit from:
affordable-fuel-injection.com/
The guys there were great to work with and helped me select the options I needed.
You were able to use the stock fuel pump?
I put a new fuel pump on just because the old one was original, but yes, it's a stock fuel pump.
So you running fuel injection with carb fuel pump?
I did change fuel pumps just because I was working on it, but yeah, it's the same electric pump as the carb.
@@brianwindingland9595 carbs usually only run at 6 lb of pressure and that fuel injection throttle body needs 32 lbs to work right .if you bump up the pressure you will get more power and better mpg because the fuel will have better atomization.
I'm not an expert on this topic. I do know that this setup is working. It starts great, runs very well. I followed the advice of the company I ordered it from.
what kit is this
Legacy chevy from Affordable Fuel Injection
which kit did you install?
How much less does the engine this way?
Not sure what you mean, but honestly everything is much better. I did not lose anything. Better start, better run, better boat!
I mean fuel consumption. Did it get better?
Not sure. We use the boat for tubing and water-skiing. I never tracked my fuel usage. Those activities take a lot of fuel since it's pulling hard. It's also never the same each time we go out.
All the people asking what brand and where. Does nobody click on more in the discription?
Fuel line is safer with a hard line because of the heat of the engine. You don't want a hose with fuel melting on top of your engine 🫠
Boats only run 140-165 and you can lay hand on exhaust it only gets 80-100 degrees or so. Boat has the worlds largest radiator The lake
Although it will run you should never install auto parts on a marine engine. The results can be catastrophic.
Is there a part number for the kit?
