The captain is resposible for the safety of all the passengers. That's why they have to get permission.
You will find police carrying assault rifles in airports because of the threat of terrorism, but our cops don't normally carry guns because our public don't carry them.
It's just a different mentality over here.

I've been woken up in Gatwick by Armed Police (this was over 10 years back) - they were just doing routine patrols, and just quickly checked I was okay and had all my stuff with me. Top notch chaps.
I've also experienced US Airport Police too, again, top notch. Heck, they even rescued me from the stupidity and ignorance of TSA once, as a clueless b*tch of a TSA agent was basically interrogating me....with questions....she didn't know the answers to. She eventually called over the Cops...who looked at me, looked at my passport and went "no, he's good". Turns out, I'd asked the same Cop a few questions on a previous visit, and he'd remembered me, because I had the same clothes on and the same destination, and was heading to the usual bar I would grab food/drink from on my visits.
(It should be noted, TSA need to realise they're not any sort of authority over people already granted access through USCIS, bunch of self important wankers. The only decent one I've dealt with ever, was the colleague of questiony b*tchface, who actually repacked my bag and apologised for the disruption to my travels....and even was like "oh...did you have a shower gel bottle explode in this bag?" "Yes" "That'd do it" - The guy even offered a complaint form)

Heathrow might be the biggest UK airport now and one of the biggest in the world, but my parents told me about it when Dad started to work abroad in 1948, post WW2. A lot of the facilities were still in tents on grass! Heathrow was only opened as a civilian airport in 1946. Sometimes luggage was stacked down aircraft aisles and aircraft could be converted bombers, either with a chemical toilet or you had to wait for a refueling stop 😁 which were frequent. I first flew at six weeks old with my mum from Aberdeen to Birmingham (but my carrycot and towelling nappies etc went to Belfast!) and then out of Heathrow which was then called London Airport with only one terminal to the Middle East when I was three months old in 1961. I've seen the airport grow up 😁.

You might notice, the rights read are slightly but crucially different to Miranda rights. Key among them being while you do still have the right to remain silent, you cannot plead the 5th or the like as withholding info can be used against you should you then use it in court.

@@DezzReacts it partially comes down to us just not having a constitution, for all our politicians would like us to believe, the magna carta, the closet thing we have hasn't been valid for centuries; but also, police don't have qualified immunity, they did have something similar until 2018 but even then it was hell of a lot more limited than say that of the US. The result is that records are on an even playing field for the most part, if you incriminate yourself or inversely exonerate yourself when talking to the cops and it doesn't turn up or match in court, someone will get in trouble and everything will be scrutinized, making it in everyone's best interest to not lie.

    • @rexex345

On that note UK police internal investigations is combined with counter terrorism, so cops generally have incentive not to piss off IA detectives... That being said, that still doesn't stop bad cops from being bad, London met tends to get in near constant trouble for stuff like racial profiling, or racial prioritizing (this isn't exclusively against any 1 demographic generally, it kinda changes who gets the short a d long stick depending on who got shafted last), and there's no shortage of racist cops, especially within volunteer community police who get big egos for being police in name only.

Heathrow Airport is the size of a medium size town and the second busiest in the world. It can be 2 miles walking distance between gates so 20 minutes.
Re needing the Captain's permission to enter the aircraft it is illegal to take firearms onto a commercial airliner but as the person responsible for the safety of the aircraft, crew and passengers the Captain has the discretion to overrule this if said armaments are in the possession of police and aren't going to be used. Basically asking permission is simply protocol and good manners on part of the police.

    • @UranusMcVitieFish-yd7oq
      @UranusMcVitieFish-yd7oq Před 8 měsíci

Oh, and obviously unless there is an immediate threat to life or risk of injury the police have no legal right of access to the aircraft whatsoever so have to ask the Captain's permission to board just like everyone else. In this case the Captain would have been within his rights to refuse them access.
Here in the UK just because someone is a cop it doesn't give them any special rights of access to property be it private or commercial above or beyond your average citizen.

On paper. The Captain of an aircraft has the most legal power of anyone in the world.
What he says is law. Nobody outranks him on board. Not even a US President.
    At least in UK law.
If his professional opinion for the safety of the flight is to execute someone, on paper he can do it.
His only legal checks and balances are from a safety committee, not the courts. ON PAPER.

This is a great illustration of the difference between UK and US policing - the officers here were armed, dealing with an arsonist at a major terrorist target - They were polite, didn't touch their guns, didn't even touch him, didn't handcuff him, just calmly said south wales police want to talk to you about this thing - they gave him no reason to react badly.
We have armed police staged at most major airports and rail stations - often with H&K MP5's, but we also have standard unarmed officers and specialist transport police there as well.
If you like this kind of thing you might like the Emergency Bikers series - follows UK motorcycle police and paramedics.

Very late comment but if you see two armed police running full pelt through a terminal it's likely to cause concern amongst other passengers, I don't know if that's an actual policy in place at airports but unless it's a proper emergency then it's likely something to avoid doing.
EDIT: Note to self, watch the whole video before commenting, literally 30 seconds later in the video one of the officers addressed that same thing I commentesd about

I think the entire world knows that all American cops are armed and more than a few are trigger happy especially to certain demographics. London Heathrow is huge and it takes a long time to get from one terminal to another. It’s been a while since I’ve flown from there rather than Gatwick but as I remember there is a train between the terminals. I’m around 35 miles from London since you asked where we are from. Collapsible Baton instead of the more traditional rubber trungent
    Taser with three spares
Hand cuffs a mix between the solid and the zip ties
    Pepper spray
    Radio
And that’s about it, depending on the area and location some police officers might be equipped with a small first aid kit, not entirely equipped with dealing with say a stab wound or the like, but enough to prolong the patients life until proper medical treatment or aid can be given, things like plasters, rubber gloves, tweezers and the usual antiseptic wipes and bandages, again not overly advanced but enough to stabilize or prevent further injury and much like most of our other public services our police force is a bit of a mixed bag in which police officers are trained in dealing with crimes but some can be medically trained and most have to go through a basic first aid course as their job may require them to administer basic first aid before any ambulance or medical assistance can be given as well as some minor albeit limited fire safety procedures and firefighting training, such as how to tackle a burning BBQ, or a small bonfire in which as long as it doesn’t require the actual fire service the. The police are more than capable of dealing with any small flames or fires if it’s safe to do so
