I'm surprised that ODSTs never really caught on in popular fiction or even in the Halo series post 343. The concept alone of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper is one of the coolest things I've ever heard in my life.

What use do ODSTs have in the current era of Halo though? They were meant to fill the gap between the light infantry, the Marine and the heavy infantry, the Spartan Two and Spartan Three because humanity doesn't have the numbers of Spartans they needed. Now that we have the Spartan Four program we can mass produce our heavy infantry, and so the ersatz heavier infantry isn't necessary as much

@bruni5289 one word: strategy. The ability to deploy a squad of elite shock troopers anywhere on a battlefield at any time.
If Spartan IIIs can be deployed from orbit like that, that's great. I would consider them effectively Orbital Drop Shock Troopers at that point.

What I hate is that they're actively in the current stories like Rubicon Protocol and Shadows of Reach, but we just never see them in game. It really wouldn't have been hard to just add in a few ODSTs into some of the marine squads in Infinite

I believe we don’t see them anymore is because we’ve followed the UNSC Infinity since H4 which probably holds the highest concentration of Spartans in the entire UNSC and ODSTs are somewhat redundant. I imagine if we were to see more UNSC ships, stations, and bases separate from Infinity we’d see a lot more. (There probably some manual that says Infinity has a lot of ODSTs… in which idk)

    • @Rev_Goose
      @Rev_Goose Před 7 měsíci +38

@@smudge4331 I think the Infinity had somewhere between hundreds-thousands around the time of Infinite and that was when they weren't operating at full capacity.
I honestly think they were absent from H4 simply due to the fact that they wanted to focus on Chief and Cortana feeling cut-off and unsupported by Del Rio and so we really only have a few missions with marines and they also wanted to introduce the Spartan 4s in that game too.
As for H5 I think they were absent just because the story was primarily around Osiris chasing Blue team and wasn't supposed to be a large unsc military campaign, otherwise we probably would've seen them.
As for their absence in Infinite, I've got nothing, this is really the first game narratively that felt like they should've been there in some capacity

A guardsman, even one as tough as a Catachan Jungle Fighter, or as stoic as a Kriegsman, you can sit down, have a conversation with, and share an MRE with. You can't really do that with an Astartes. It would make sense, second to ship's security/masters at arms and gunners mates and the marines aboard they are THE primary experts at ship to ship infantry combat as a shock warfare operations group. They are tough as nails, armed to the same level as a marine weapons platoon, trained to a level that'd make DEVGRU blush, and the closest equivalent to the SEALs/Green Berets the UNSCDF has to throw at a problem requiring such operators.
In open warfare on a defensive arena cross hundreds if not thousands of klicks on a shield world, low on supplies, low on ammunition, hunted, fighting on hard terrain, reduced in capability, trying to get survivors collected, doing risky hit and run ops, having safeholds and firebases raided, prisoners taken and brutalized by the banished? Yeah, along with the S-IV's they were primarily target number 2 behind the chief and everyone thought Atriox ohk'd the chief on Infinity; so the banished took that as open season.
I remember those KIA tags too and it makes sense. Sure the IV's made day to day ops for the Banished a living irritation, but the troopers mowing down the lower level troops was probably something seen as a threat to be curb stomped. Taking them out would make things hard to almost borderline for the grunts trying to survive that were still spread out and cut off.
With the troopers gone, the banished could them mop up the rest and focus more on eliminating the IV's still around.

Most notable unit in the book was a group of ODSTs called Gravediggers/walkers I forgot, but they did really well when it came to blowing up banished supplies.

Yeah Spartan-IVs really filled ODST's shoes. But it seems like the Spartan-IV program was just the harbinger for the real goal of augmentation to Spartan-IV equivalent of all enlisted UNSC personnel probably around the 2570s-80s. Then we could possibly get ODST Spartans who have the same enhanced training and combat role but also benefit from Mjolnir armor and physical augmentation because there's only so far grit, determination, and training can take you when your enemies are all 7-8 foot tall slabs of muscle and power armor.

Oooh, not only an awesome lore video, but another creator pushing November Black! I cannot wait for that short film, it looks so good, and the lore content is really good to discuss too.
I definitely would like some more small scale stories involving the ODSTs and Marines, something more dangerous and to remind us of what the soldier at ground zero experiences. There's an awesome fanfic from years ago called "Enemy of my Enemy" by Katsuhiro that has a group of ODSTs among the defenders of an outer colony led by an Irishman named Murphy. In that fic, they're treated as the best of the best, and watching them fight from the perspective of a pilot or a marine is awe inspiring. So when the Post-Schism army starts dropping them, you know that it's gone to Hell in a handbasket.

Idk, I might be the odd one out here but if we had to have any spinoff games with ODSTs and marines, I would personally love to see a game around two or three different era's of Halo History:
    - The Rainforest Wars
    - The martian campaign (which like you stated 00 is the first official formation and deployment of the UNSC Marines, including the ODSTs)
    - A campaign before the UNSC was founded in where we take on the role of the precursor to the ODSTs and or the precursor to the UNSC Marine Corps.

The odsts would make such a good goal point for something like an Xcom style turn based tactical strategy game. Using stealth, hit and run and squad tactics to separate and pick off covenant forces. Maybe they could license smaller "war stories", spin off games set before and during the human covenant war during the established lore to explore less covered times, battles and aspects of the war and let 343 focus on carrying on Chief's story

The comment about putting together a smaller substudio to do a side project immediately made me think of the recently-released Assassin's Creed Mirage. Mirage was built on the last game's version of the AC engine and started in the concept phase as DLC for that game, and the studio responsible, Ubisoft Bordeaux, begged for the chance to make a standalone game when they began to see the potential of what they were doing. Two years later, they released Mirage, which is genuinely the closest Ubisoft has gotten to a stealth focused 'Assassin Fantasy' since 2014's AC Unity released. It's not as popular with the mainline gaming community, but for fans of core Assassin's Creed it pretty much hit nail on head unanimously.
Now, take that philosophy and apply it to the functionally sound gameplay of Halo Infinite. Yes, 343 is hurting for help right now; all the more reason to put out a bulletin that the company is seeking fulltime employment for a new Halo game. Sequester a substudio of people who love the core of what makes Halo special and give them 16-24 months to create a small-scale, traditionally styled campaign adventure with any number of characters, from a new team of ODSTs to Alpha-Nine as SPARTAN-IVs or even the S-IVs in Rubicon Protocol, slot in Firefight or even just do the thing that makes the most sense and make it standalone DLC for Halo Infinite.

Kinda similar to HiddenXperia's Elite video, both of you want Halo to explore more stories that isn't Chief or Spartan centric. I 100% agree on this one, even though I'm a Master Chief fan and an overall fan of the Spartans, the Halo universe is vast with lore that can span millions of years. If Mario can get away with being a 3D collect-a-thon, a puzzle game, an RPG, what's stopping Halo doing a similar thing?

You mentioned it being good to feel vulnerable in Halo stories sometimes and it's always a good feeling to hear someone say exactly what you're thinking.
I ran a Halo Tabletop Campaign recently where I had the players roll Human Civilian gangsters on an outer colony. They enjoyed the tension that came from being so vulnerable in combat just fighting other humans let alone when the planet ended up getting glassed.
By the end, the players saw one of the final boss characters (who the group made amends with) get killed by an Elite Minor. That really cemented the sheer power of the Covenant in their eyes and they bailed from the planet as soon as possible.

As cool as the ODSTs are, with the advent of the Spartan-IVs, logistically it doesn't make much sense to continue to invest in training for them. You let currently operating unit continue and consolidate as they retire, supplementing with the 4s. I certainly hope we get more ODST stories, but I really believe that as the Halo timeline progresses, they will slowly fade out, much like calvary in our own history.

There is far too few IVs to warrant just ditching ODSTs. They are far too expensive to replace an entire type of infantry. ODSTs are far cheaper and easier to train and replace than Spartans. Maybe they start augmenting ODSTs and giving them SPI armor much further down the line, but I imagine they will just fold ODSTs into the Spartan Branch at that point.

I hate spartan 4's. at least how they are portrayed. if they were just different replacements treated as NOT spartans, then ok, but they talk like civilians, act like marines and pretend they are spartans. it's NOT cool. if they were just odst's but with energy shielding, sure, i'd be happy, but they straight up made living action figures. that's what they feel like. not people. and they are held in regards to 2's and 3's, which SHOULD NEVER BE THE CASE. it nerfs the lore of 2's and 3's, while making 4's feel like copouts.

So very glad I found this on October 31st. I promise to wait the 1 hour until Nov 1st patiently and faithfully.
    Great channel. Keep it up.
The thing about the economy of war is that the cheaper things tend to get used more often than the expensive things - NOT 'unless' they are effective, but DESPITE of their shortcomings when the net effect is more of 'them' dead than us or, almost anytime a bean counter can find any efficiency or financial model to keep them. ODSTs are a far cry from cheap or marginal, but they do so much more for the UNSC than any variant of Spartan, because they have been slowly gaining operational development momentum for decades now. Just like the US Marines of today, ODSTs can expect to be disbanded and forgotten about if peace is ever achieved - and then called ba k up when needed. The only reason to do something scary to the franchise would by if they decided to can them out of a need do drama. Hopefully, when I wake up, there will be something to look forward to.

What I would really like to see, in terms of the newer Halo games, is for the ODST’s to be much more integral. In the books they are constantly around the Master Chief, and he is very aware of not only their presence, but also their fragility. So something I would like to see is a battle that Chief is clearly losing, not just to the overall plot but also to the player. And I would like to see the ODST’s save him, perhaps everything going wrong and then you start seeing squads of them either dropping into the fight or joining in the fight. He’s always portrayed as caring about them, and it would be an interesting narrative to see them doing the same, to me anyways

Ya know, an ODST game in the same style of Ghost Recon Wildlands would be awesome if you ask me. Just picture this:
You are a squad of ODSTs sent to quietly pacify a rebel group on a backwater planet. While on this world, you hear... whispers of something going on. Something huge. But it's off-world, and you've got a job to do. As your team of ODSTs quietly cut through the rebel forces, you start to piece together a larger plot from the Rebelion, which you act to put a stop to.
But then, just when you finish off the Rebel forces... the Covenant show up... And now your fight is no longer to pacify the rebels, but to get as many civilians as you can off-world. You make the call: So long as there is one civilian left on this world, your team isn't leaving. The remaining rebels, once your enemies, now your allies, decide to redeem themselves. They will fight this battle with you.
50yrs later, a team sent to rebuild discovers a device. It contains all of the recordings. The mission reports. Everything. The team member that finds this decides to write a book detailing the lives of the ODSTs, Marines, PDF, and Rebels.
You sacrificed everything for the people of this world. And now, decades after the fall, your story is finally told.

Attacking an important target in the original series meant that you could not do it as just the Chief, so you needed extra guns. Makes sense to have some humans help out if the target is important. But now "the help" is performed by other Spartans. Obviously a direct assault will head in to a ton of firepower so it would make sense to make it Spartan heavy, regular humans can get the job done but they will take a lot of casualties. So Cheif would reasonably always work alone/with Spartan Blue team or for bigger missions he would work with multiple Spartan teams. But yeah totally miss those ODSTs.

I still feel bad that they killed the Rockie like that, in a novel, executed and not even mentioned in Halo 5. ODST was my first Halo game (owned, I played Halo 3 from the beginning) so I grew attached to the ODSTs even more than to Master Chief, I really liled their armour and the scenery of the game. 343 could get a lot of praise if they use what they have at their disposal, even low risk, no real necessity for high stakes, just another regular human trying to survive the war with the covenant, banished or Forerunners, we all loved Halo Reach, ODST, Wars and other fanmade game/mods, just give us something official, reuse assets, models from previous games.

Bring back the ODSTs!!! You could even use the master chief story to show the shift in ODST culture after the gym incident, would make for a great pool for new characters. Hardline ODST vets vs new age Spartan 4s without armour ❤❤❤

Honestly this is why I love Arma, Any universe you want to have that more girty tactical feel for it's soldiers, Arma 3 has you
I remember playing through the end of a Fall of Reach going into CE Arma 3 campaign
From escaping the planet to escaping the ring, it felt real, tactics, fighting tye covenant was hell and it was amazing

the sad part i know they were mentioned in the audio logs in HI and i could have sworn there was a rescue mission icon in the demo or i think a screenshot demo of the map with ODST labeled but i think it was cut out but i cant recall so they are there just not in gameplay sadly and maybe joe wanted to make it just marines to have that feel of CE when only marines were there to support you but still wouldn't be so bad to just have ODSTs appear but maybe they will just play the same role as a marine that is why maybe IF they ever think about making a campaign DLC to explore another part of the ring they can replace the marines with ODSTs and maybe meet a commander of those ODSTs to kick off the story there or something

I said it before and I will say it again. A rainbow 6 style ODST video game. Think about it ODST going against the Covenant before you ever even seen a Spartan. I mean how awesome would that be. Love every thing you do, keep it up.

Love me some ODSTs 🔥 I think a lot of the issues was Spartans becoming such a huge thing, I kinda wish we moved away from Chief and the Spartans and focused on humans fighting instead. It’s not some power fantasy where you kill 990000 aliens who can’t truly hurt you, and like you said, ODSTs are human Special forces, the issue is Spartans can do everything they do much better, you send ODSTs when you can’t or won’t send Spartans, and expect losses, maybe the publishers think people would rather play the cool walking tanks than a human in rather normal armor.

It was years after release that i played, and was very pleased with gameplay. Old Bungie rocked.

ODSTs are one of my absolute favorite things in Halo, and Halo 3 ODST is one my favorite games of all time, it just hits different for me, its more relatable then the Spartans, and dont get me wrong I absolutely love the Spartans too, but the ODSTs just feel more personal and relatable, but yeah I just love Halo, and ODSTs stick out to me and are just so intriguing.
