  • Palia has the potential to be a great game but it has a lot of work to do before it gets there, and there is no guarantee that it will.

    "It took me days to even see a palium ore" proceeds to solo the big node without shouting it out. xD

      Haha yeah I was so excited to actually find one I completely goofed. Players are generally pretty good at calling out the flow trees but haven't seen much talk of the nodes in my experience. You can only really get 3-4 hits on them anyway so it's harder to share.

    Why did you want to spend an hour leveling up your fishing from 5 to 6 all at once anyway, instead of just waiting to see yourself level up gradually over time? (genuine question) When people complain about the grind, I don't understand why they feel such a big rush to hurry up and unlock everything all at once.
    Definitely agree that it needs some work though, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it's going to grow! I do REALLY hope they add a player economy so that like you said, we can just specialize in the areas that we personally think are fun. And the competition over rare resources definitely needs to be addressed, but at least the devs have acknowledged that they agree it's a problem and they're thinking on how to improve it.
    But yeah, if you feel like the game is too sparse right now (which, valid), I think it's a *perfect* idea to do exactly what you said and just walk away from it for a year or something, give it time to mature, and then give it another try later. I know a lot of people have said that the team should have waited until it was more fleshed out before releasing the open beta, but personally, I'm really happy that they opened it up already. It's been such a point of joy in my life over this past week. I've played maybe 20 hours and I for one haven't had any sense of that "waiting around for things to happen" boredom that you mentioned--I'm still constantly feeling like there's TONS for me to do. Maybe that will change once I complete all the quests. I'm only level ~4-7 in each skill and I'm not grinding or rushing to level up--I have my daily routine of talking to every character I can find and doing different resource gathering routes depending on what I need for my current quests, and for me, that's enough to keep it interesting. I would like if the multiplayer aspect went deeper, but even just the small interactions with others feel really fun to me, like forming an impromptu group to run around farming trees together.

      Palia isn't for those who want to level up quickly and have the most money and all the prizes. It's a cozy and go at a slow pace (a stop and smell the roses, and watch the sunrise/sunset sort of thing). I have thoroughly enjoyed the game, the pace and what the game designers and developers have put together here.
      I have noticed that the designers ARE working to fix bugs, and work on problems the players puts forward. As it is a BETA, I knew that all the ducks wouldn't be in a row and that there would be some problems. However, I am enjoying the progress that I am finding in this game, and how much I like the slower pace of things in Palia.

    Call me simple, but I just find running around and exploring the world fun - going to spots I haven't seen before, finding secret treasure chests, talking to villagers, gathering resources, and they've been adding some new little quests around the worlds too where you can get recipes or learn more about the lore of Palia. And the more you talk to the villagers you unlock quests specific to them too that I find really enjoyable - all the dialogue and backstory we get from them is so refreshing after hearing the same dialogue lines over and over again in Animal Crossing.
    I do agree that it is a bit of a grind to get money in the beginning. I spent hours fishing, hunting, etc. trying to get the money not only for better tools/recipes, but also for just setting up my farm plot (that I do think is one of the best ways to consistently make money with seeds/preserves). So I agree that it's not easy to get started, but once you get your seed crafters going then you're gucci. You can have a self-sustaining farm and start raking in the money. I was definitely a lot richer when my farming was all doing its thing even before I went to a cake party.
    To go on to your thoughts about palium ore, etc. I've found that in Bahari Bay most (unfortunately not all) of the players on the map have gotten good about calling out when they see palium ore or flow trees and will wait for you to get there to get in a hit so everyone gets the resources (admittedly a bit harder with palium ore since it doesn't regen health and there's only so many hits you can get in). I've gotten heaps of flow wood recently from just being in Bahari Bay for other things and intermixing it with running around to all the flow trees people spot. I don't have much palium ore yet (haven't really been focusing on it rn), but there really are some kind people in Palia who will let you know when there's some around if you keep an eye on the server chat and say omw before heading over. It doesn't have to be about stealing resources if people work together and share.
    Regarding the Maji Market - I personally thought the fetch quests were cute and fun and not boring, but I do agree that the prices of the things you can buy at the market and the chapaa minigame are a bit disheartening. If I hadn't gone to a cake party I wouldn't have had enough money to buy a bunch of the items at the market. They aren't prices for the casual player. And the chapaa minigame - it's definitely hard to get chapaa when people are already spawn camping. I got the most chapaas (although still not very many) when I was playing last night and there were much fewer people in the market than the first night I played it. Although when there were fewer people at the market it didn't really feel like a festival like I'd go to in real life where there are loads of people wandering around perusing the food/shops/going on rides. I found myself going up to a rooftop to watch the fireworks - again I'm simple.
    "or fucking awful climbing. why is climbing so shit" tell us how you really feel, demon 🤣 but it is a bit shit, I agree.
    I think this is a game I'm going to be playing for a while. I might take a break to play other games that come out (or finally get back to hk) but for me it's a really refreshing game to just be cosy in instead of worrying about my hunger/health or food spoiling or enemies spawning and having to fight a bunch of creatures. It could definitely use a bit of work, but it's my niche of a game.

    I'd argue that early game the 25k copper storage upgrade shouldn't be an immediate goal right from the start. Crafting slots, farming plots, first couple of backpacks, and early tools are more pressing early on. Crafting machines in particular since, like most life sim games, they make the best money. The passive income you end up with makes 10-20k while offline fairly easy. Most of those other upgrades I mentioned are usually 500-5k.
    Side tangent, but your storage problems look self inflicted to an extent. Why so many unrefined mats in storage? Stone, flint, fertilizer, plant fiber, and logs are taking up 1.4k of your 3.2k space when they're only really used in small amounts or fed into refiners.
    You can make palium competitive, and I'm certain people do. However in your own footage there are people calling out palium spawns in chat to help people get hits in.
    Not a fan of the event either activity wise, but I don't see why the idea that testing an event early on in a life sim mmo is so strange. Events in life sim games are a major part of the game and I'm assuming Palia will mimic that to an extent. It's not like the event is a one an done, the devs did say it would be a reoccurring event.

    I followed Palia for a year and was so excited to get into the closed beta. What I found was a game built buy a group of corporate designers who have little to no interest in adjusting the game in response to player feedback. The only reason they are beta testing is to find bugs. The game itself it nothing but a money-grind, and just like other MMOs that want people playing for a long time, everything it made extremely difficult or drawn out to take forever. The devs don't respond to players needs or criticisms, and when there is some communication they either misrepresent things (like "players losing items was not from our bug, but from bad people climbing a wall!") or gas-lighting (ignoring players real concerns about the overpriced real money store and portraying the issue as confusion over the pricing). I think that the devs will keep doing all of this until well after launch, right up until they are hemorrhaging players, after which they will start throwing in things the players have been requesting but it will be too late. It's a shame - there is a lot to like about Palia.

    one thing I'll say on this is I hope it is not lost on people that the intent, or at least this is the feeling I got when playing it, for "holding you back" isn't holding you back but rather diverting your time to engaging and interacting with the NPCs of the game between tasks.
    everything I've seen from limited inventory storage to needing to buy recipes to needing to buy cooking ingredients like oil, the "questing system" and game progression is tied to growing relations with the villagers. More so than other types of games like this, like Stardew.
    so to me, that dead time between waiting for your crops to grow or filling your inventory gathering resources and needing to go back home to drop it off all makes sense with the framework they built for this game. and this should also tell you where it is going. This will not change as to me it seems that's the fundamental reason this game exists in the first place.
    but yes, fully agree that this game could use more activities to do. however, my bar for games like this is low. no sitting? bad game. but they're adding sitting. decent game.

    • @DemonRebuilt
      @DemonRebuilt  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Fair point. Personally, I've never really cared too much about relationships with villagers in games like this but like I said in the video, the characters are one of the things I think they did do well.

    I share the same feeling about Palia, I was waiting for this game since 2021 when they announced it.
    Right now the only thing I'm missing to do is the bundles for the temples, but it's such a hassle and it's pretty much pointless. Like sure, there's a cute "pet?" you can unlock, but it's completely optional.
    I have finished my house, I have leveled all my skill over lvl 20, I am capped both storage and gold, literally had to buy 3 plots to unlock the gazebo, and just did it because I wanted to spend the gold somewhere because at one point you have nothing to spend gold on. All the progression is tied to gold, and there's a point where you are making more gold than what you're spending, it does feel they are trying to slow everyone down with gold generation because all the progression is tied to it.
    Housing is the most important part of Palia, yet it is completely disconnected from thee MMO/social section of the game, you could have the most amazing house, but no one will see it unless you call people over to do something like a "cake party", besides that there's nothing else you can do with others at your house. Just cooking.
    Parties feel pointless, there's nothing good about partying with people than looking up their location on the map. You don't share the resources you gather through a party, so you need to be following the leader to hit the nodes to get materials, you can do that without a party already, again, pointless.
    The request system is dumb, I get what they're trying to do with it, avoid RMT, but by limiting trading it completely alienates anyone in the server because there's no cooperation, there's no economy.
    So in the end Palia has a lot of half-baked systems that don't work in a MMO scenario. Heck, even the social part of the game is lacking a lot, this shouldn't be called a "social sim mmo" when the social is limited at best. There's so many times you can talk to npcs before capping them on friendship and romance, what then? You gonna sit at Zeki's underground to chat with people? How fun...
    Palia is in desperate need of more social elements, you name it, mini-games, trading/market board (BDO's marketboard system would be ideal), unlock housing to it's full potential (share the house with people, let them get there while the player is offline, let them use things, etc.), more emotes and RP capabilities, more character customization, furniture usage (which should have been there before beta tbh), more housing customization and less template/blueprint driven building (partitions, roof changes, multiple stories, etc), meaning to communities and make them like guilds that work for objective completion, I have more.

    For me I did not take quiet that long with fishing lvl for example or for leveling at all. I just did the main quest first and while doing that took the resources I needed. There was no point in the game where I felt bored or smth. After you finsh the quests you reach a bugged one eventually (Prove your devotion: plant 5 wild trees) but you can start building your house after you reach that point. There is no need to lvl stats you dont wannt to lvl. (Not past lvl 6 at least) and if you commune with shrines you should be able to reach lvl 5 -> 6 in fishing with just 10-20 fishes what took me like 10 minutes or smth. I find it a very enjoyable game yet it is a little bit bugged for the moment.

    The UI and all the machines look like straight out of My Time at Portia.

    He sees other player coming and still mine the node to the end. If you going to complain about people competing for resources, maybe you should ALSO not be a jerk?
    I heard a few good criticisms on this video, but mostly would not fit the whole vibe of the community cozy game, as this is supposed to be a game about coziness and people working together and having fun together, and that is one of the reasons the new limited event, the Maji Market Chappaa Chase, was a dumb concept from the start, as from the initial idea to the implementation of it goes against the whole game philosophy.

  • @Marqan
    @Marqan Před 11 měsíci +5

    I have to disagree on the specifics, but agree on the main idea the devs need to do something if they want to keep the game alive.
    I think the main reason you feel like you're held back and that the real-time constraints are too punishing is because you're trying to power-game through the content. You can never do that in MMOs or similar games. It's not like you don't have to grind in Stardew also. There are always filler activities and grind in these kind of games.
    The money is also not a big issue, you can easily make farms that give you a lot of money. A very simple design with just rows of potato, tomato and rice will give you ~25k per 10 in-game days on a max size farm, you just have to turn the crops into seeds and sell those. And when you reach the 3.2k item storage limit you kinda have almost everything there is, you likely already stockpiled lots of materials and items.
    I think the problem is "just" lack of content, and indeed if they don't do anything about it, then the game will die. Even worse, now that the game is out for so long and most people who wanted to play it already played it, so devs would need to add something significant to lure people back in. Like I'd need a completely new mechanic/activity/skill to get back into the game again. A few new crops, animals or items likely won't do it.

    • @paradeoflaughter
      @paradeoflaughter Před 11 měsíci

      I don't think you can just easily make farms, though. It takes a while to even get to the point where you can make money from farming. While the first 2 plots of soil are free and the next 2 are only 250 and 500, it only goes upwards from there with the 9th soil costing 3,000. It's 9,000 total to get all 9 soil plots. Then you need to buy all the seeds to fill the plot and be able to place down enough seed collectors to start being self-sustaining. And if you already have the max crafters out you need to buy extra permits which also costs money. I do agree that in the end it does pay off and I've found that seeds (and preserves - but that's a different beast) are a good way to make money, but it's a grind to even get to that point. Especially when there will be other things you want to spend your money on besides the farming/seed setup.

    They made everything so expensive in the game! And then they nerfed all the best money making things! So, now farming is just a pain in the ass for next to nothing. They want us to grow EVEREYTHING but with limited crop plots growing it all would spread us so thin that we wouldn't make any money at all, or instead of making money everyday we'd only make money ever 3rd or 4th day because it takes that long to gather enough materials to process and make it worth our while. You make almost nothing from processing your crops! A tomato is worth 34 cents and a pack of tomato seeds is also 34 cents... but it takes 4 tomatoes to make one pack of seeds.

    Honestly, when they nerfed the cakes, they lost me. Cake parties were our reprieve from the relentless grinding that they expect people to do. People have jobs and lives, we can't grind out all day, every day. Why congratulate us on coming together as a community and doing activities together, then nerf it to the ground. I'm a streamer as well and brought a lot of people into this game only for it to work against us. Let's address the medals, too. Can't put fish in the aquariums, can't put insects in the terrarium, so we just have a crap ton of fish and bugs that we worked to get and can't put them aesthetically into the only true end goal, which is building. Where is the grove for flow trees? Why are spawn rates nerfed? Why can't we sell food off the food cart decoration? There's so much potential, but it seems they aren't interested in it and just expect us to pick up the slack.

    Personally I disagree with a lot of this; as someone who works full time and maybe has 2-3 hours maximum daily to play this game.. I have had minimal problems obtaining iron box storage, or graduating though skills, until now that I'm lvl 25+ in most. there are so many ways to play the game effectively and I by no means am a min-maxing god; which is why I find it strange that some are having such issues leveling at a steady pace. Find a goal, set the goal and work on completing that goal. 20 minutes of hunting and clearing a full crop plot is pretty close to 10k, doing that twice is literally your storage upgrade to copper.. also how is crafting throttled? Literally you can purchase up to at least 20 crafter licenses for your plot, I have more crafters that I need, usually.. and crops do not stop growing when you log off, well technically they don't.. I can not confirm the exact amount as Im still figuring this out, but I believe you get 2 in game day cycles worth of growth while offline; if you get any less it's because your crops do not have weed repellant or water retention. Palia needs a lot of work, that is for sure. However properly utilizing the tools they give you will solve most of your leveling issues, communing with the phoenix shrine for experience bonus, maintaining a full focus bar, and using general proximity buffs when fishing will make the world of a difference. I hope this doesn't come off as kind of pointed, its not supposed to be.. I find XP and gold as such a non-issue and I'd hate for them to force feed people to the point where they have nothing to work towards. I would much rather them focus efforts on the UI and UX issues, collision problems(unscaleable cliffsides), audio bugs(audio just cutting out after a loading screen), or tasks that aren't able to be completed due to unfinished/not fully implemented quest objectives and housing spawn problems.

    Lol what? I'm sorry but ofc it takes REAL hour(s) for your potatoes to grow...Doing garden every hour is already annoying, can't imagine doing it more often. Nobody sits at their house plot staring at potatoes waiting to grow, there's million other stuff to do in that time. Thank god some things require time to progress because it would be overwhelming trying to do everything.
    Not only that, garden time limits are mostly tied to balancing rather then slowing players down. If anything, this game respects and helps you manage time if anything. This is not a gardening simulator. You go outside and do stuff, not re-planting your crops and collecting seeds over and over.

      I've changed my opinion on farming a bit. Once you work out a good crop placement that doesn't require watering/weeding all the time and have some seed makers, it's pretty breezy. It still sucks that there's no way to get farming xp besides just waiting for your crops to grow though. I've often found myself having to choose between circling Bahari Bay yet again for resources or logging off because it would be another 30 mins before I could check the crops again and I didn't really have anything else important to do.
      Also as an aside, I think the 9 farm plot restriction is lame af. I'd be happy if they nerf the selling price but open it up so you can make giant fields of crops. You still have to earn that ability anyway.

    So when the developer makes a statement that more multiplayer opportunities are coming, and when they say that so much more is in the pipeline, and when they say that this is just the beginning of the game..........does it mean nothing to you?? I have deep memories of where World of Warcraft began, and where it is now......and it took many years to get where it is today. THEY ARE LITERALLY ONE MONTH INTO THEIR BETA. *THeir Beta* !!!!! The core mechanics are there: fishing, mining, foraging, cooking, crafting!!!! What will change is how we gather, how we create, what we create, when we create and what other multiplayer opportunities are coming. FOR A FREE GAME !!!!!!!!! *** FREE *** this game is doing amazing. And why should fishing be easier? It takes no skill to chop a tree, shoot a bow or mine an ore. ZERO SKILL. It actually takes time to fish, just like IRL, and just because its not super fast and easy its a bad skill? Its painful FOR YOU, but other people enjoy it and its a way to chill out. They will tune it accordingly as they get more and more data, but my god, calm down. It should feel epic and a little challenging to get those skill medals and if other people are spending 10-14hrs a day on the game and get them before you........TOO BAD. They put in the fair time, and if you want to be casual and dip in for an hour a day and feel like you should be handed everything just cause you played the game for an hour, that is some audacity. I don't do one mythic dungeon in another game and feel like if I am not handed the loot I want then its a trash game, I put in the time it takes to get the loot. REMINDER: the game is barely 1 MONTH IN BETA. IN *BETA* When the developers say so much more is coming, listen. When they say its not even at its full potential for what they are envisioning, listen. They need the feedback and gameplay to make things better.......but when the feedback is leaning more into a bashing of what is lacking without even listening to what they have said.....it feels like a click bait youtube to me. I dunno, it would be rad if people just calmed down and let this one blossom. This is just my opinion, after playing continuously since Aug 2nd and having an amazing time in the game and with my friends in discord playing.

      I'm glad you're having a good time, and I know it might not sound like it but I am too for the most part. I hope you are right and that the devs add many awesome updates and the game becomes everything we hope it will be but you'll have to forgive me for being a little sceptical. I will wait until I see the content before I pat the developers on the back for saying it will come.
      And I don't want everything handed to me. Perhaps I wasn't entirely clear in this but I think the ways of earning xp need to be adjusted so it's not simply "perform x action 300 times to level up". I would love to do more complicated tasks or more group activities for more xp.

      the games has been in development for over 2 years with 50million dollers of funding, yet it feels like it just launched as a early access game even though its due to launch as a full realesed title in 4 months, they sold us a mmo with no mmo features this might as well of been a $30 single player game, you can tell the devs are ex blizzard and mobile game devs with all the deliberate time gating and lack of respect for players time, and dont even get me started on the intentional holding back of basic QOL features so when players ask can we get this? they look like the good guys for adding a feature that should of been there from day 1, classic blizzard tactic with WoW for years

    Palia probably has one of the least customer friendly support staff in any game I've ever encountered. I've had two unanswered tickets now without even a simple acknowledgement. So fuck this game, it'll die in six months.

      enjoy palia for the next 4 months because as soon as it launches on switch this xmas its dead on arival because too many kids are whiteknighting devs that dont deserve it, and saying anyone that gives feedback or critizes the game for its flaws during a beta are being toxic, the whiteknights are killing this game not the people trying to fix this mess
