I’m with you on that. Every place has different ways around it. We had a rule at one job where if food wasn’t marked as belonging to someone specific, it was fair game. Came in handy when people wanted to bring stuff in to share and not leave out on the counter, and was super clear that it was the rule but people would still whine if they brought in leftovers in an unmarked container and it got eaten. Seriously, how hard is it to put a piece of tape with your name on it to prevent issues? Someone will always complain lol.

The real sad irony is companies 1) only hire the bare minimum number of workers, 2) resist paying overtime when something disrupts their tight time constraints as much as they can get away with, 3) make hiring criteria somewhat random to deny applicants and get a tax break for being "understaffed", and 4) spread propaganda pretending no one wants to work.

Our dress code at school was pretty good, the students didn't dress too slutty or anything like this. There was no issues with hair, and my nephews class had a teenaged boy who always had long thick hair and it grew pretty fast. One of the new teachers had issues with boys having long hair and she tried to go on some sort of power trip. She got so flustered over the hair issue and the principal letting it slide, she was caught verbally abusing her male students over hair and was caught trying to cut one of the students hair she was fired on the spot. This teen boy would grow his hair long just to donate it to locks of love twice a year and he still does at 35 and his his two children a boy and girl also love to grow out their hair to do the same as their father.

I remember reading about a Native American man (a very long time ago) who thought his mother had died because white men cut his hair short. They did that to force him to conform to their standards, but in his culture, you only cut your hair short if your mother dies. She called daily asking how her mother was doing, how she was settling in, her health, etc. Staff always assured her that her mother was doing fine. One day, staff called her and notified her that her mother was unresponsive that morning and was sent to the ER. Upon arriving at the ER, she was told her mother had severe bed sores (aka pressure sores) and was badly dehydrated. All the assurances she had gotten from the nursing home staff were bull. Her mother was neglected. It was heartbreaking. It made me more determined to keep my dear stepmom who had dementia at home as long as I could to avoid placing her.

Something very similar happened to me as did with the third story, but on equal terms. I was a substitute supervisor at a house for minor immigrants, think kids between 14-17 coming in without their parents. The shifts we had required 2 people during the afternoon shift, and one person during the night shift (and like OP, sleeping shift that was less paid). It usually worked so that you started on Monday morning and left Wednesday morning with a 3 hours break in the middle of the day, and after that you where done for the week. Meanwhile the day-shift that assisted from around noon until 8pm. This was the standard, but a problem arose when wednesday morning came by, and I got a call from my boss saying that my replacement ended up being sick, and asked if I could take the wed-fri shift as well, with overtime pay, which here is *150%* of regular pay. Of course I said yes, because I had no plans, and this would effectively give me 3 weeks of pay in one week.
They where always trying to avoid this being an issue, but being understaffed sucks and sometimes you just have to bite the bullet on these points. It is something I *don't* recommend however, despite being a "relaxing" job, I was exhausted by the time I was off work, and almost slept the entire friday after I got home.

Assuming he's doing this because he really likes home cooked meals and either can't or is unwilling to cook, why not take that money that you offer *after* stealing a lunch and just offer to pay your staff to just *make you* lunch? I mean, cooking for other people *can* be a pain in the neck, but 10-20$ for a plate of glorified leftovers sounds like a nice bonus when you're already preparing a lunch for yourself.

So one day I wore my new short shorts to school and everyone complained and teased me, slut shamed, whatever... but for some reason (this was a smaller, brand new school) they didn't actually have a dress code yet. I wasn't even particularly 'testing my limits' either, I was a stupid 13-year-old, and it was hot out, also they were pink. Anyhow, the strangest part of the story is that none of the teachers said anything... until like a month later when I heard one of them talking and she said "Wendy has been told not to wear some of her shorter shorts ever again." (Only with my real name, true anecdotes, fake names... yadda yadda). But no one had ever said anything to me, no teachers or the principle or anything, at least. So I apparently triggered some sort of discussion about making a dress code, then decided never to wear that pair of shorts to school again of my own accord... well, not really... I didn't want to get bullied more... they found other things to bully me for, but that's a whole other story. And somewhere along the line, I guess I indirectly started rumors that I had been reprimanded? IDK, it was only mildly bizarre at the time, but as I hear more and more over-the-top outrageous dress code 'violation' stories on the internet, I think to myself; "I musta dodged one Helluva barrage of machinegun fire... dodging a bullet simple doesn't cover what I didn't go through."

Maybe it's different in other countries, but in my country you are required by law to take lunch breaks. You can't skip your lunch break even you wanted to if you are working 9 or more hours in one shift. We just don't really have enough info to know the full story. I mean I agree that 65 is a normal temp, but if I was told I didn't even get to have an opinion on the matter I'd be pissed. Especially if I tried compromising like op did. You do have a point, but to me the roommate seems to be on a serious power trip over the thermostat when there's several ways to cut down his electric bill, like leaving appliances unplugged until they're used or using cold water instead of hot whenever possible. The overtime stories show exactly why we need unions. Most large employers will take advantage of staff in every way they can. In my hospital HR decided to save by not replacing the first two nurses who booked off sick on every unit, which increased workload beyond our ability to provide adequate patient care and led to burnout and (of course) even more sick time. Without the union they would have literally worked us to death if they had been able to, but the union put a stop to it by bargaining mandatory staffing levels, which meant either hiring more nurses or paying double time for OT.

She handed me a scarf and insisted I wear it like a turban for the rest of the day to cover my hair. So I walked around school with a turban like a Sikh man. Except I am VERY white, and it was an all girls' school.
Several teachers stopped me and asked what I was doing, but I just gave them b-word's name and said "just doing what I'm told!" Coupon Story:
At my place of business coupons come in two types; 'dollar off' and 'percent off'.
There is a specific order of operations the register takes these discounts off; 'dollar off' first then 'percent off' on the remainder so if you had a $20 coupon and a 40% off coupon it would go 100-20=80 then 80-40%=48.
I've had many a Karen, Chad and so forth hand me 'percent off'coupons, I'd tell them the new total then they'd be incensed that the 'dollar off'coupon they handed me next didn't take off the amount they assumed it would.
The best one was during a Black Friday sale; this Karen had the luck of a 50% off coupon and five $10 off coupons. She spent a good ten minutes having me ring up her items and removing items so she would get as close to $100 as possible, then she handed over her coupons expecting me to be telling her her total was going to be $1 or less.
(Because the story took place years ago let's just assume her total was $100 before the coupons)
Me: "Your total comes out to be $25"
Karen: "ARE YOU RETARDED?! I GAVE YOU...!"
Me: *put my hands up like I'm being held at gunpoint*
Karen: "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!"
Me: "I'm informing my loss prevention team that I'm being yelled at" *while keeping my hands up in the air I make a pointing motion with my right hand at the security camera above my head*
Karen: "WHY DOES A RETARD LIKE YOU NEED TO CALL THE PEOPLE WHO CATCH THIEVES?! I'M NOT STEALING, I JUST WANT TO USE MY COUPONS!"
Me: "They're going to bring a manager over with them."
Karen continues to shout abuse at me until the manager and loss prevention people show up. I'm put behind the officers
    Manager: "Ma'am, what's the matter?"
    Karen: "THIS RETARD...!"
Manager: "If you don't lower your voice and change your choice of words I will have you thrown out of the store and banned."
Karen: "...she won't take my coupons off properly"
Manager: *looks at the coupons and the transaction* "The $50 coupons all come off first, making your total now $50. Then..."
    Karen: "YOU'RE WRONG!"

For context ex-lax is a laxative that used to come in chocolate bars like a small Hersey bar. I started bring them to work. Day 1 we all noticed the supervisor was making a lot of trips to the bathroom. Day 2..the same, by day 5 he was still stealing them so for the next week I made new batch with 4 bar of ex-lax in it. Day 6...we heard a large groan and a shriek come from the Supervisor's office. Dude totally crapped his pants and as he was running to the bathroom he left a nice brown/yellowish trail. Not sure why but my pudding and other ppls lunches just stopped getting stolen. Funny how that happens.

dresscodes isent a thing on schools here in norway. same at university. the only places with some type of "dresscodes" is for the classes where you need different type of safety gear etc. i would think that if someone went to school with a t shirt (or some other pice of clothing) that had just a ton of racistic stuff on it then they might have been sent home, but that would probably be the extent of dress code vialiton here, maybe if you went to school completly naked you would be sent home to. but except for those two things? higely doubt it.
safety gear during specific classes is a 100% reasonable thing considering it keeps people safe. like you dont want someone using a chainsaw where you learn about logging etc and they have a pair of regular pants on and not using the safety ones that stopps the chainsaw in less than a second if getting true the outher layer (a LOT of threads around a mm thick that will stopp the mecanicsem in an instance massivly redusing the potential of damage and if any damage it would mostly be minor to your leg)

For people who dont know much about aviation, the reason they dont allow for overtime is due to FAA guidlines, pilots and flight crew can only be on for their set hours because people being made to work overtime has been linked to atleast half a dozen airline crashes
    No im not kidding

The story about op who worked in a care home for people who couldn't care for themselves is that op should have filed a complaint with OSHA about the workplace and how they put little effort into finding a replacement staff member so that they could go home to get something to eat and take a shower and get some rest and then come back to work for their next shift

nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. You move that thermostat an iota above 60, and you can damn well find yourself a new place to rent next month.

Tbh, I'd gladly trade some restaurant prime rib for some home cooked food. I have more free restaurant food than I know what to do with and not enough time to cook. I really miss home cooked meals. When I visit friends and family they always want to go out to eat so even during holiday I rarely eat anything not from a restaurant. It gets old.

I don't think I ever experienced pearl-clutching from teachers or parents in my high school, at least when it came to wearing inappropriate shirts. As far as I can recall, no one wore anything too inappropriate, but someone was sent to the principal's office when I wore a shirt that sparked an argument over cavemen. It was a shirt that we received a few years earlier when we attended an engineers contest (For building a catapult) and someone thought it would be funny to reinforce an old statement that pissed me off back when we got those shirts. I told the teacher what it was and why it annoyed me, and they got detention over it. When he returned to collect his stuff, he threatened to beat me up after school, but nothing came of it, I think because someone informed the office of the threat and he got an even worse detention as a result.

School dress codes are so dumb sometimes. I remember once in school all the girls lined up by the wall whilst the teacher measured to make sure their skirts weren't more than 5cm above the knee. If they were more than 5cm the girls were told to pull their skirts down until they were at 5cm. So apparently it's better for them to walk around with their bums hanging out, but God forbid you see a bit of thigh
