    I moved to Longstone when I was 4 in 1966 (Kingsknowe is part of Slateford-Longstone). The quarry was the council tip throughout my childhood. It was still about 40-50ft lower down than it is now. The smell over the whole area was awful, especially on hot summer days. After the tip closed it became like a heathland in the late 70s/early 80s. There were partridges living there before they grassed it over.

      @@solobrouk When I was at primary school I had a project on the history of the area. I interviewed an old lady who'd always lived on Longstone Road. She told me that the prison (since replaced with modern halls) was built by prisoners with stone from Hailes Quarry. This must have been during WW1. I can't find reference to that but I have no reason to doubt her.
