The simple answer to "Simon's theory of beautifully constructed symmetric sudokus" at the end of the video is that a great number of highly symmetric sudoku are based on 10s-complement (X / 10-X) symmetry. This puzzle for example, for each cell in the puzzle, you can add it together with the 180-degree rotational counterpart and get 10. c3r2 (2) plus c7r8 (8) equals 10. In any puzzle where the entire grid is 10s-complement symmetric, the central cell must always be a 5. Because it is rotationally symmetric with itself, and thus has to be added to itself to equal 10. 2X=10, X=5.
If the central cell is anything other than 5, then some other cell will be missing a "partner" and the symmetry is broken. You can absolutely make highly symmetric puzzles based on other mappings besides 10s-complement, but given the range of valid sudoku digits and maths behind many of the basic constraints, it's easy to see why it's a popular choice for setters.

What a delightful surprise and beautiful solve! Thank you so much for the feature and for the kind words. "Glyph" is one of FullDeck's favorite words to play in Scrabble. :)

    • @livedandletdie
      @livedandletdie Před 3 měsíci +4

Glyph is a nice word in general, it sounds so much better than symbol or scribble or image.. I saw the glyphs on the wall sounds better than I saw an image on the wall...
However of all words that pertains to images or symbols, the Swedish word Hällristning is just a word that have a lovely sound to it. It is the Swedish word for Petroglyph. Although literally a word meaning Stone Carving.
Oh and the puzzle was quite lovely, an enjoyable amount of scanning, not too hard, and rather good looking. Have a lovely evening to you both.

Just over 50 minutes, but I’m fairly new to actually solving these variants. It does seem like a moderately approachable one. Each step kind of flows from one bit to the next, after the daunting “where on earth do I look” sections.
I did far too much coloring to visualize the highs, middles, and lows-none of it helped until I had some firm digits. The thing I noticed that could have helped Mark earlier: we know the columns in Boxes 4 and 6 where 1 and 9 can be due to sudoku, and this greatly simplifies the box 3 and 7 renbans. Of course, it took me longer than the video to work out some of the renban logic, but that’s a lot of the joy of these videos for folks like me who solve slower than our hosts: we get to yell at the screen because we saw something a better solver missed.

The logic in puzzle looks to be much more beautiful the the Mark’s approach. Searching for extreme digits in 3&7 boxes makes very beautiful things, and all the point revealed by Mark at the beginning are becoming much more obvious and easily reached.

I think the reason why 5 often appears in the middle of rotationally-symmetric puzzles is because it's the only cell that doesn't have a partner and 5 is the only digit that pairs with itself to form 10. All the others have a partner.

Since mark solved this w the givens, would love to see if Simon
Would attempt this without them....and once finished mark can give him a given.
    -----
Wow without the givens that is one powerful antisymmetric rotational-symmetric design completely letter/colour solvable design...
Only need one given to resolve the digitmapping.
Very impressed by setters for this design.
The key is what R2/8 implies to B3/R2 and B7/R8....it reduces what might seem like many branches to 1(or 2). And the remaining is just sudokuing...
But if u can prove the rotational symmetry u can cheat to finish the solve. Granted u can also break the 9x9 into 2 cookie halves.and fit it back together.

Crazy how logic forms sometimes. I wanted to use that logic halfway through the puzzle but I couldn’t be certain it held for every single 180 degree paid

In both cases one of these numbers was placed in boxes 3 and 7 due to the given digits. This immediately gave you a part of the entropy on the long lines. If I hadn't made a stupid error later I would have halved your time which would have been unbelievable.
