    Brilliant explanation. I have a Keys I use with my DT but have not explored this side of things before.
    Understanding how to control external gear with the DT properly is worth its weight in gold. I was struggling to understand how it would work when the DT only has two inputs for external gear, but you're using those two for the Keys and sending those from the Kick, to your USB interface.
    I understand this now! I'm going to hook up my Keys and my Roland TB03 to my DT and have fun exploring how they can be externally sequenced and tweaked/locked all from one unit, my DT.
    Just effing awesome! Thanks so much!

    I was struggling to use the DT sequencer in my DAW, after about 1 hour of nothing I told myself, let's see if Oscillator has some tips...and voila' , what you did is not even related to USB and DAW connection, but all of a sudden thanks to your video, magically everything made sense. Also that trick of connecting the cc values to the LFO is so neat! I am using it with various Kontakt VST instruments and with self learning cc function it works wonders. As usual you are absolutely great! Elektron should pay you :), how on earth one can find the things you do in a manual! Thanks a lot, your video are always a great source of inspiration.

    Thanks again for the breakdown. As I mentioned on Facebook, I tried this with my Volca Beats last night. Some interesting things to note:
    1. The Digitone doesn't have a ratcheting function like the Digitakt, so if you're missing something like that you may need to find a workaround. (Haven't found one yet but haven't looked too hard.)
    2. The notes used by the Beats aren't sequential. In fact, they're spread out seemingly at random, so you need to reference the MIDI data document for each different drum voice that you want to trigger. I haven't done this yet, but I think the most practical way to handle this would be to use something like a Brother tape machine and print out a sticker with the note numbers so that you can stick it onto the Beats as a quick-reference.
    As I said, I'm not too keen on the snare so if I keep this I may want to mod it, but otherwise it sounds pretty good ... especially when you run it through the Digitone's Master Overdrive!

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 5 lety +2

      Yeah I really hope they bring the ratchet feature to the Digitone or allow the arpeggiator to be p-locked (which kinda achieves similar things), although, of course, at the moment you can't access the arp on the Midi tracks so that's another feature request!

    • @oblomurg

      Are you saying that if I connect my Volca Drum Modeling Drums to a ext midi track of the Digitone it won't receive the sequence?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 5 lety

      No. It should do. What we'll need to work out is what that actually means - is it just a note per part, can it be played melodically etc. Have to wait for the manual to be finalised and actually lay hands on one to work the particulars out.

  • @t.n.3819
    @t.n.3819 Před 5 lety +7

    The Digitone is the brain of my setup, or at least the conduit between Ableton and everything else. So many people seem to get hung up on the 8-voice polyphony (which has not been an issue for me at all), but once you factor in all of the external sequencing capabilities it becomes clear that it really is an incredible bargain. I think people also underrate its ability to moonlight as a digital drum machine; sometimes it feels like I have a mini Machinedrum jamming alongside my Acidlab Drumatix. Those crispy FM blips complement warm analogue toms very nicely. I wasn't much of an Elektronaut before this, but I can say without a doubt that the Digitone is my favorite groovebox ever.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 5 lety +1

      I'm confused about the 8 voice polyphony. Is it only eight voices of the fm sounds? Eight voices of the volca sounds? Eight total?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 5 lety

      The Digitone can play 8 voices of its own FM synthesis.
      Each sequencer track can sequence 8 note polyphony each, so if you have synths to support that polyphony you can. Does that make sense?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 9 měsíci

      You can't get around the 4 tracks, but each step can hold up to 4 notes and those notes can be any note, so as long as you don't need to trigger more than 4 drum hits on a step, you could probably happily do the whole beat on one track most of the time.

      I don't think you can save templates (although I have to be honest that's not something I've checked for definite - just thinking of the menu structure I don't think you can), however, just like you can copy synthesiser track settings from pattern to pattern, you can do the same with MIDI settings - so what I've done is used the last patterns in the final bank of my current project to stash the settings I need; then I can easily jump there and copy them across to new patterns. Hope that helps!

      I don't think the CP works as a multi-timbral device - you're using one sound at a time - which ever you have selected. However you can select which sound you're using by sending midi CC according to the manual (page 13 of the Data List manual which is a download from yamaha). CC 80 let's you cycle through them, but I don't believe you can play a Rhodes and a Toy Piano at the same time - nor can I find any evidence of the different sounds being able to be addressed on different channels.

    In the case of the Volca drum (with each of the 6 drum hits being on a separate midi channel ) how would you hypothetically route it over the 4 tracks on the elektron? I made it the auto channel and then sequence 2/3 hits per track. But what i don’t like is that i loose the ability to do the “step jump” repeats with the volca sequencer... so my understanding here is that you are entirely using the elektron sequencer keeping the volca sequencer clear so it does not compete?

      I am doing just as you suggested..and, yes reading can be tedious especially in the Elektron jargon that takes a bit to climatize to. I still feel manuals as a whole are weakly written as there can be a lot of assumptions or lack of proof reading.
      And in so much as a manual may say it can do this or that rarely do I see a good approach to give instructions and use case info.
      As a retired robotics engineer I'm sure I have higher expectations.
      Moog, for example, know how to not just make a manual but they make it excellent reading and laid out so nicely. A Korg or Roland Manual is well, not a Moog masterpiece.
      This is a longwinded way of saying thanks for all you do. There's an art to disseminate info and you have the touch. The English Loopop? lol. Peace!
      BTW, only one LFO for Midi track on the DigiTone? I tried to get the second LFO but no luck.

      @@bobclark5360 cheers, and yes, only one LFO per midi track, sadly!

    What midi split cable do you use?

      I used to use some random thing I got off of ebay. It was fine most of the time, but unreliable so I grabbed a Kenton Thru 5 and have never looked back - absolutely solid.

    Great tutorial! -- can anyone tell me why whenever I hit 'midi' the 4 tracks are turned red? I can't seem to make them white like in the tutorial (this is always the case in totally fresh banks / patterns). Although I can get playback from my Volca by hitting keys on the DT, I can't from the sequencer. What am I doing wrong! Cheers! :)

      This sounds like they're muted maybe check that you're not in the wrong mute mode? (func+double tap mute mode)?

      @@OscillatorSink Thanks, this helped! Although the mute modes seem very confusing, I've re-read the manual several times and can't get my head around it honestly.

      @@createshape6467 you have 2 mute modes - one related to the track, one related to the pattern.
      The track mode means that as you move between patterns the mute state will be the same.
      The pattern mute modes are embedded in the pattern - useful if you want a certain mute state to be set when you change patterns.
      It gets tricky when you are using both at once as you may end up with two layers of muting and then you need to unmute both.
      I tend to use track mutes when jamming, but pattern mutes when I come to organise a set.
      I talk about it in this video (it's the Digitakt instead, but it works exactly the same way).

    @Oscillator sink - hi! totally get what you're doing here and trying to do it with my little UNO synth. having assigned it to a midi track i can play it from the keyboard (I have the keys) or the trig buttons but the DN sequencer doesnt activate the notes on the uno. any ideas?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 3 lety

      That's a weird one. If you've set up any CC mappings I'd maybe unmap everything to make sure that there's nothing messaging with the patch there.
      Is pressing play on the DN also starting the Uno's sequencer, because I bet that is a candidate for messing with things, so maybe try turning off the Send Transport setting on the Digitone (somewhere in the midi settings, don't recall where exactly). See if that helps...

      @@OscillatorSink and heres something really funny - i can sequence the uno (connected same as it was to one of the DN's midi tacks) from a midi clip on my deluge, with no issue whatsoever. Ill try your suggestion tomorrow though cause i really do want to try what you did here with the conditional triggers etc

      @@OscillatorSink of course. while I have your ear I think I need some sort of mixer, rn I use the 2 inputs of the DN but I already have 2 more (synths) than can be connected at once. Do you have some sort of recommendation if I promise not to hold you to it? it doesnt need to be the bottom of the barrel either, price wise, but Im also probably not needing massive bells and whistles. just enough to expand as I acquire stuff (im in the throws of a middle age shopping spree and these are my sports cars) thanks!
